1 CONTINENTAL NEWS Announcing all that is happening at Continental From The Board President... Happy "almost start of Spring"! Yes, in a few days Spring will almost be upon us, and before too long our part-time neighbors will be returning from their other homes, near and far, to spend time in beautiful Flagstaff, perhaps the biggest reason we all live in this wonderful community. Continental Country Club is sprucing up and tuning up and we hope you love being a CCC resident and enjoy life here. What with the expansion and remodel of the fitness room, planned improvements by Oakmont, great golf/ pickleball/tennis, seasons, and a terrific swimming pool experience at our main pool and at Bear Paw, we hope the next several months at CCC will be the best in memory. The Club has already had several residents upgrade their Associate memberships and we hope to encourage many homeowners who aren't members of CCC to join as Social Members. 2 From The General Manager... Happy March everyone! It feels like we just celebrated the holidays doesn t it? All of us here at the club are really excited to get our golf season kicked off on March 17th. With a very mild winter thus far we are hopeful that all of our golfers will enjoy the 2018 season. The driving range is now open and has been getting used on a daily basis. Also we have sold a couple new golf memberships and are getting closer to our goal of 50. I want to bring you all up to speed on some of the exciting projects that we have completed during the first quarter. First, we have all new Matrix and Peloton fitness equipment and a new paint job in the Fitness Center. The exciting newest addition will be our fitness studio within the fitness center for Fitness on Demand. The Fitness on Demand will allow our homeowners to have a private area to take on-demand classes such as Pilates, Yoga, Kick Boxing and Aerobics. Another large project we have been working on is the design for the upstairs lobby area. Furniture has been purchased and should be delivered within the next few weeks. We have been working with Warner s Nursery to lay out our planting ideas for the spring and summer for around the club. Our maintenance manager has been very busy this winter with various projects. For instance, Will has cleaned out all of the gutters around the clubhouse and golf shop and removed all of the pine needles to ensure the property stays Firewise. Additionally, he has been painting the no parking curbs around the clubhouse, trimming branches, painting the entire upstairs landing area and hung new historic pictures down the hallway leading to the Oakmont. All of our staff is very excited to get the 2018 season off to a great start and welcome all of you back to Flagstaff. 3 From the Golf Shop... Good day and here is to hoping the weather man is wrong with his forecast. As I sit here and type this newsletter I am also looking at the forecast. Let s hope we have good weather for March 17 th, our target date for opening. (Forecast is for 3-4 inches of snow.) On a more positive note, the new Peaks Pass cards have arrived and are available for pick up in the golf shop. If you had points on your High Country Card they will transfer over to the new card. I d also like to share with you that we were able to obtain a commercial grade ice maker so this will allow us to provide a higher level of service for our members and guests. The cooler on your golf cart will be filled with ice eliminating the need to take the cooler in to The Oakmont to be filled. We still have merchandise in the shop on sale for 45% off. We have a limited selection of shoes on sale for 45% off and you will also receive a golf glove complimentary with each shoe purchase. The Flagstaff City Championship is returning in It will be two rounds played over September We are looking forward to a successful tournament as well as a successful season. We have some new merchandise arriving from Nike, Under Armour, Travis Mathew, Adidas for Men and Tail, Cutter & Buck, EP Pro for Ladies. 4 Tip From The Golf Pro... What are you good at? Play to your strengths. Learning what you are good at is vital in both coming up with a practice regimen as well as coming up with a strategy for the golf course. By going through the most important skills in golf and giving yourself a grade, you can start to paint of picture of what makes your game achieve the lowest scores possible. The list below doesn t represent a comprehensive list of skills, but it will give you an idea of things you need to work on as well as how to develop an effective strategy. Please feel free to add skills or remove them as you see fit. Give yourself a grade for each variable and be as honest as possible. Putting Scrambling (getting up and down when your approach shot misses the green) Recovery (Getting yourself out of trouble after a poor shot, i.e. in the trees) yard approach Iron Shots Driving Accuracy Driving Distance Although most great golfers are good at most everything on this list. Many of the best golfers in the world are incredibly deficient in one or more of the skills above. A perfect example is Phil Mickleson who is extremely inaccurate off the tee. He is also phenomenal at recovering and scrambling after poor shots which allows him to still hit his driver often without terrible results with his score. He is also incredible with the yard approach. Rather than focusing too much on fixing the accuracy by taking less club off the tee, he plays to his strengths which for him is any shot using a wedge. If he worried about his accuracy too much, he would never get the opportunity to use his strengths. He uses recovery and scrambling to mitigate his driving accuracy problems, and uses distance and a phenomenal wedge game to get birdies. As you give yourself a grade for each of the skills above, think about what you can do to improve all of them but also think about which skills go well together. Some skills that work together are obvious such as driving accuracy and distance. If you give yourself high grades for both accuracy and distance there is no reason to keep the driver in the bag for most situations. Remember, be honest with your grades. For many golfers, they would prefer to hit a full shot into a green rather than a wedge shot from 50 yards. If you prefer the full shot, there is no advantage to taking on more risk to get the ball closer to the green with your tee shot. If your iron shots and accuracy grades are high, it isn t nearly as important for scrambling and recovery skills to be high. Putting is a valuable skill for everyone s skill set and should be a focus for everyone s practice regimen. Use your grades to develop a strategy that uses your strengths the most often as you play a hole. If you can t find a clear path, it is time to develop the skills necessary to make that happen. Base your strategy off your strengths and hopefully you can get a clearer picture of how to improve for this upcoming season. Mike Frye, PGA Director of Instruction mfryepga@gmail.com

5 Greetings From The Tennis Shop... Tennis and Footwork! How can you give yourself the best chance of hitting a perfect tennis stroke? Footwork! Agility, quickness, and leg coordination are perhaps the most important athletic traits any tennis player can develop! Utilizing 'quick feet' to move (before, during, and after striking the ball) is essential. Footwork usually falls into two categories: shuffling and running. These two categories produce many hybrids of movement which will change depending on the circumstance at hand. Whatever combo you need, make sure you move with a low 'center of gravity'. By keeping your legs bent, feet wide, and body low to the ground, you will be able to turn, accelerate, and shift your weight much more efficiently than someone standing straight up. Sports cars are built low and wide in order to create the ideal center of gravity for high-speed handling. Try to apply the concept to your tennis game! And finally, large steps are important for covering ground quickly, but they must give way to smaller (often squeaky) surgical steps as you close in. Picture this ironic analogy: You are looking for a pair of tennis shoes. In order to fit just right, you may need a size 9.5 instead of size 10. This same concept applies for footwork. Larger steps represent full shoe sizes, while smaller steps can be absolutely crucial for finding that perfect fit needed to execute a great shot! 6 Compliance Corner The neighborhood is looking good! I would like to thank everyone for their hard work and commitment to keeping their properties maintained so well. Specifically this month, I have noticed a considerable change in trash and recycling bins stored appropriately. It really makes such a difference to the overall beauty of the neighborhood! Please continue to follow the City of Flagstaff Trash and Recycle Pick-up schedule: Recycle bins may be placed curbside no earlier than Monday evening each week and stored unobtrusively no later than Tuesday evening. Trash bins may be placed curbside no earlier than Thursday evening each week and stored unobtrusively no later than Friday evening. Bulk items may be placed curbside no earlier than the week prior to the scheduled pickup. COMMUNICATION IS KEY **If for any reason, you are not able to follow this schedule here and there, please contact our front desk or myself, so we may note your account (vacation, sick, etc.). If you are gone on a regular basis (you live in Flagstaff on weekends, short term rentals, etc.), we suggest you arrange with a neighbor or property management company to assist you with bin storage. It is your responsibility to notify us of any deterrence from the CC&R s/rules and Regulations. Communication is so helpful in avoiding notices and fines. 7 Making Any Changes? Don't Forget To Obtain Approval First! The governing documents require that the Association approve all proposed architectural changes before any work is started. The importance of this requirement cannot be overstated when you consider the reason for such a restriction. Membership in a community association requires compliance to pre-existing conditions and regulations. One of the biggest advantages of these conditions is the protection of our property values. The value of your home is directly related to the condition, appearances and aesthetics of our community as a whole. By regulating the kind and types of architectural changes that can be done, the Association is better able to maintain the property values. Getting the Association to approve all proposed architectural changes is not just a good idea to protect your investment, it is a requirement! If you have any questions please don't hesitate to call Architectural Control Committee Submittal and Approval 1. All exterior improvements and/or modifications, including painting and reroofing, shall be approved by the Architectural Control Committee (ACC) prior to work commencement. Even if guidelines are set forth in the Rules for a specific modification, the item still needs to be submitted to the ACC for prior written approval before work is commenced, unless otherwise specified in the Rules and Regulations. 2. Approval is obtained by submitting a Design Review Form, available at Continental Front Desk or online at 3. Any work commenced or performed without prior approval is subject to fines in accordance with paragraph 14 of the Amended and Unified Declaration of Restrictions Continental Country Club. 4. Non-approved work may require restoration to the original condition, or to be brought into compliance by other means, as decided by the ACC. 5. Work must be performed as approved or the approval is considered void,. 6. Continental Country Club reserves the right to inspect completed work for compliance. 7. Work shall be completed within the expected completion date. 8. All portions of the structures shall be within the property setbacks.

Spring is just around the corner, and with it comes none other than Peter Rabbit hopping his way to the Continental Country Club Annual Funny Bunny Brunch and Egg Hunt. March 31st is the day the big bunny heads our way! Bring the entire family for a fun-filled morning. Beginning at 10:00 am enjoy a buffet in the Oakmont of French toast, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, mini-pastries, fruit, juice, coffee, tea or milk.
