1 if they have "Love for fellow 'man' in their hearts" they are potential Rotarians Paul Harris therotarian News NUMBER 42, APRIL 20, 2010 DISTRICT 7910 District Governor CAROL TOOMEY Rotary District GOAL $200,000 APF $76,378 Message from the GOV I am writing this now and reflecting on all the spring events that are blossoming in our district. Our district conference is in three weeks. Have you signed up? (This is the least expensive conference in all of New England. Don t miss this.)there are several spring festivals (Westborough), road races (Brookline), Wine tastings (Milford and Acton), a classy wine dinner (Leominster), golf tournaments (Maynard, Concord), and much more. No one can sit on the couch and claim to be bored. There seems to be something for everyone. We do all this and we don t always realize the impact to the community. Sometimes we only think of it as a fund raiser or a social event for our club. It was only a couple of weeks ago that I visited Brookline s pancake breakfast. It raises a lot of money (but only charges $5) and it is great fellowship for the Rotarians. The whole community is at there and people look forward to this annual event. Thousands come, eat, have fun and reconnect with their friends. Everyone is there. YOU Rotarians do a lot for the community. I guess I didn t even realize what our work does until I heard my son, Alan, tell me last week. Mom, I did something in Rotary. I ran the 5K in West Dennis. Just having the name Rotary club of... makes an event legitimate. There are many events going on this month. Many have sent me flyers and I have attached them after this newsletter. When you look at all that is going on, YOU should be proud of your organization, the largest service organization in the world. I suggest that you encourage a friend or business associate to join you at a meeting and allow them the chance to be a part of this great organization. (Or, of course, you can grow a Rotarian as you will see on page 2.) The Future of Rotary Is In Your Hands. District Governor A VIDEO MESSAGE TO ROTARIANS FROM BILL GATES a video message to Rotarians, Bill Gates, cochair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, thanked Rotarians for their hard work in the effort to eradicate polio and congratulated Rotary for surpassing the halfway point in meeting Rotary's US$200 Million Challenge. "The work you're doing to raise funds for the program is critical, especially given the tight government budgets and increasing costs for a very aggressive polio program," Gates said. "Your work as advocates is also very important. We need to keep this fight high on the world's list of priorities." Rotary has been a leader in the fight against polio since the launch of the PolioPlus program in Recently, the Gates Foundation awarded two grants totaling $355 million to Rotary in support of its work in eradicating the disease. In response, Rotary pledged to raise $200 million. To date, Rotary has raised $117.5 million. HELLO FELLOW ROTARIANS! One of the most sacred moments at our District Conference is the opportunity to honor our fellow Rotarians that have paid the ultimate price and gone to their heavenly home. This event is held on Sunday morning of the District Conference and is known as the Necrology Service. A reading of deceased members will be read and a candle will be lit for each one. It is customary for a member of the Club to carry the candle. Please send me a list of you deceased members, and any offices they may have held, eg. Pres, VP, AG, PDG, etc Send to PDG Carl Kaliszewski by May 7th Thank you! PS. Only Rotarians are eligible. God Bless! THIS WEEK S DISTRICT 7910 NEWS... CHAMBER OF COMMERCE 16TH SALUTE BREAKFAST The people and groups that make this area a better place to live were honored at the Holden Area Chamber of Commerce's 16th Annual Salute Breakfast on Wednesday morning. Wachusett Area Rotary Club Receives Honor from Holden Chamber For their civic-mindedness, both internationally and locally, the Wachusett Area Rotary Club was also honored at the event. Before committing to a project, members of the Rotary Club ask themselves four questions. Is it the truth? Is it fair toward all? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? And will it be beneficial to all concerned? From their constant presence in as many local activities as possible, to their presence most recently on the international level in Haiti, this club boils it down even further to one simple directive do good, said presenter Bob Evans, of FMG Financial Services. Even before the earthquake struck Haiti in January, the local rotary club had already established themselves in service to the distant country, developing a fish farm for the residents of a village to use for food and revenue a living embodiment of the well-known chestnut: if you give a man a fish, he eats for a day; if you teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime, said Evans. Immediately responding to the earthquake s devastation, the club went to work to raise funds to make sure the damaged fish farm could get back up and running, and to supply the community with other basic needs. Locally, the club is active throughout the year, whether in raising funds to award scholarships, or serving breakfast to seniors during the holiday season. They look for a need and try to fill it across the community, said Evans. Recognizing the great work the Rotary has done, Rep. Evangelidis said You would not believe the amount of good they have done in our community... It goes on and on and on. Also, Terry Greco received recognition for her long standing support through printed materials associated with the event.
