Ladies & Gentlemen Friday, June 5th is the first day to qualify for the Net Tournament, last day to qualify is July 5th. You may try to qualify as many times as you like. Ladies Event to be played Saturday, July 11th and Men s Event to be played Sunday, July 12th This is a very fun event. Good Luck and hope to see you there! It s May and spring has finally arrived. It has been a tough winter and the course has had some damage. Matt and his staff are working very hard to try to get the course back in shape as soon as possible. Work is also being done on the 8 th hole to fix the bird baths. Last Monday the 27 th we had a crew of about 25 volunteers digging and filling the damaged area. We will continue for the next 3 weeks. Any more volunteers? The men s leagues have started and our Opening Scramble was a big success with 64 members participating. The Silver Knights have a match with Westover on the 6 th and with Amherst on the 20 th. The Women s Ryder Cup is by Ed Prystupa Saturday May 16 th. This will be followed with the Bill Sullivan Memorial Day Tournament on May 23 th and 24 th. The Opening Cocktail party was Friday night April 17 th with a large crowd attending and many staying for the dinner that followed. Thank you to the Scully s for a great time. New members- if you didn t join a league, you can sign-up to sub. Always check the bulletin board for coming tournaments. The next one is the Bill Sullivan Memorial Day Tournament on the 23 th. This is a M/M M/G, find a partner and sign up. It s a lot of fun. See you all soon.

2 Page 2 GROUNDS COMMITTEE Well it took a while but we are finally open. As you are out playing, I m sure everyone has seen the winter damage that we received this year. I just want to give some information on what happened and what we will be doing. First we received the rain storm back on Jan 18 th and the temperatures were well below freezing, this created a 3 layer of ice. Then it snowed for the next 5 weekends dropping more than 3 feet of snow, normally snow cover is great, but the 3 inch ice barrier between the turf and snow was bad news. Typically we get some type of melting but we never did. We had temperatures below freezing and record cold until late February early March. We have two types of grass, POA Annua and Bent. Our front greens are 80% POA Annua, 20% Bent and have been established since Our back greens are the exact opposite and established in 2002, with this said the POA out front is stronger out back. We were under 50 days of ice which was the problem. The weaker POA Annua can t survive under 30 days of ice because of lack of oxygen, also when the temperatures start to warm up, the ice will melt. The POA plant sucks up the water by Matt Kowal then when it refreezes, the brain of the plant freezes; it is like drinking a smoothie as fast as you can, but over and over. The brain of the plant dies and that s called winter kill. On a good note, we technically want to eliminate POA on our greens and over seed with bent grass but not so drastic. What is the plan? What should be done? Core aerate, this is pulling a plug, then we will top-dress and over seed with Bent grass. We will wait about one week and then dimple over seed with bent grass again. We will have to water more so we can keep the seed moist, also the height of cut will be much higher than normal so we can promote growth and recovery. We ask for your patience during this time because greens will be slow and soft. We hope to have a positive result by end of May into June. The end result will be converting from POA Annua to Bent grass getting better putting surfaces and stronger turf to get us through winters like the one, which I hope, we NEVER have again. See you on the course, Thanks again for your patience. Matt A BIG thank you to all the members who came out for our Spring clean-up: Dave Donnelly, Richard Chase, Michael Austin, Michele Austin, Sandy Pierce, Paul Tierney, Bill Hick, Kevin Davis, John Crane, Bill Donoghue, Richard Kelly, Helen Kelly, Dennis Lopata, Nick Lopata, Mark Nowak, Samantha Nowak, Bob Law, Chuck Camerlin, Dave Nicoll GROUNDS COMMITTEE by Mark Nowak The start of the golf season is finally here after a long winter. Temperatures have been slow to rise this spring giving us one of the latest openings in our course history. The turf took a beating at CCW as did most all other courses in the Northeast. Grounds Superintendent Matt Kowal and his crew are working on getting us to optimum conditions as soon as possible. Aeration of all areas from tees to greens and over seeding wherever needed has been started and will continue as weather permits. We now will have to be patient as Mother Nature does her thing. A volunteer effort has been started on Mondays through May from 4PM till dark with dinner and drinks afterward. You may have seen some of the handiwork on Hole #8 and it will continue with your help. After Hole #8 we will move efforts to Holes #1 and #3. All members are encouraged to assist in any way possible. Watch your for dates, times and area to be worked on. If you have questions or concerns regarding our playing surface or upcoming projects let me know. If I don t have the answer I will try my best to get one for you. Looking forward to a great golf season at CCW. Please be careful where you drive!

3 Page 3 SENIOR MENS GOLF The Silver Knights season finally got under way on Wednesday, April 29, a full two weeks later than scheduled. Twenty-eight men gathered for the traditional opening breakfast, prepared by the Scullys. We then formed seven foursomes for the opening scramble. In a little twist to the norm, our Pro Milton Torres hit each group s drive off the first tee. No problem as Milton put each group within range for a second shot to the green. At the conclusion of the match, the foursome of Sandy Orr, Jack Nehmer, Bill Watkins and Paul Dufresne were victorious with a six under par score. Second place went to Dick Boissonnault, Tom Foley, Al Wihry, and Van Schermerhorn. Bob Law took closest to the pin on #10 at 9 feet 9 inches. Due to the late start of the season, the Silver Knights jump right into the interclub schedule with little time to work into midseason form. The Westover Senior group visits Wilbraham on May 6. HANDICAP COMMITTEE Please remember the drainage area along the 1 st, 4 th, 6th and 9 th holes are free lift areas. To do this, you get relief from the drainage area no closer to the hole and one club length. Exterior rock walls are boundaries and are in play. There is a one stroke penalty for an unplayable lie. Another reminder is that all scores should be entered in the computer. For new members that aren t sure how to enter scores, the Pro Shop staff will be happy to help you. If at least 7 holes are played, a 9 hole score should be posted. If at least 13 holes are played an 18 hole score should be posted. For holes not played, par plus any handicap stroke to which the player is entitled. League scores are posted by the league coordinator. Tournament scores are posted by the club staff. Your away scores should also be posted. First enter the date of play. Our computer has a listing of clubs in Massachusetts, if a club is not listed or is out-of-state enter other under club. Than enter the course rating and then the course slope. The next thing to enter is the name of the course. Now enter your score and post. If you have multiple scores to enter the dates should be entered for each score posted. You should not enter multiple scores for the same date. If you are not sure how to enter a score in the computer the CCW staff will be happy to assist you. If a mistake is made let the staff know- corrections can be made. Most of the information on handicapping can be reviewed at any time in the CCW handbook. Enter all of your scores. You should strive to lower your handicap. Your handicap should be a representation of your true ability. Your best scores should not always be your tournament scores or match play scores. This only shows that you want to keep your handicap high so you can shoot your low scores when they count. Come on; be fair to your opponents. Answers to this month s quiz are on page 4 by Bob Law In a little friendly my Pro can beat your Pro competition, the Westover men are bringing their Pro Bill Kubinski, to do battle with Milton. This should be a lot of fun. Ordinarily you would say Milton has home course advantage, but that may not be the case as he has had little time to familiarize himself with the CCW course. On May 20, the Legends of Amherst come to CCW for an 18 hole competition. That group has always proven to be a tough competitor for our guys. The Silver Knights play every Wednesday morning throughout the golfing season. When not scheduled for an inter club match, we play as a group in a variety of formats. If you are available Wednesday mornings, come play and enjoy the camaraderie with other men. by Ed Prystupa MAY QUIZ 1. LADIES GOLF by Bobbi Perry & Tina Miller The snow seems to have finally gone and the color is returning to our fairways and greens. Matt and his crew have been working hard to get everything ready for the 2015 Golf Season. Although our Opening Scramble was moved to May, the course did have its official opening on April 18. There have been some great warm days and we hope folks have had an opportunity to get out there to play. With the arrival of May the season is kicking into full swing. It was great seeing everyone at our opening dinner. Sign-up sheets were circulated and there was excitement in the air. Thanks to all the folks supporting our Tuesday morning league which starts on May 5. Our Wednesday night league will kick off May 6 with an Open scramble. Regular team play will commence the following week, May 13 and continue to the end of August. There are open dates scheduled at the end in the event we need to accommodate rainouts. This year we will have 14 teams and the schedule can be picked up in the Ladies Locker Room. We can always use Subs so please consider adding your name! Our Ryder Cup is scheduled for Saturday, May 16 with an 11:00am start. Sign up is on the bulletin board. You can sign up with a guest, with a partner or as a single and you will be matched up by the Pro Shop. The Ladies Interclub Match Play will begin in June with the first match played at CCW on Thursday, June 18. We will then play at Springfield Country Club on Thursday, July 16 and finish at Twin Hills Country Club on Tuesday, August 18. Mark your calendars now. We need 8 players for each date. Let s win back the plaque! We have a great membership of Ladies at CCW. We want to Thank all of you for your participation in events and for making Ladies Golf such a success! As always, please feel free to contact Tina or Bobbi with any questions, concerns or ideas. LET THE SEASON BEGIN! HOUSE COMMITTEE by Chuck Camerlin Well we are FINALLY playing golf. Mother Nature did her best to keep us in the house but we crawled out the window and forced her to let us play outside! With that, we were able to kick off the season with our Opening Night cocktail party / dinner (sans opening scramble). The Scully s, in usual fashion, went above and beyond with their passed appetizers followed by a delicious buffet with choices for everyone, highlighted by their signature carving station. No Opening Cocktail Party would be complete without Mary s famous dessert shots. Thanks to the Scully family, Bart and all the staff for a great evening. Anyone who missed this needs to put this evening on the calendar next year. While you were all working on your putting, the House gremlins were hard at work preparing the club for opening day. In case you haven t noticed all the plaques have been updated Thanks to Brian, Mary, Steve Parastatidis and Kevin Davis for their help in getting this small, but important project completed. Just before opening day, the gremlins came back to spruce up your locker rooms with stained ceiling tile replacements, fixing broken light fixtures and cleaning the heating/cooling vents for your breathing pleasure. Thanks again to Tom Norton, Dave Nicoll and Kevin Davis for their work on this project. Not enough Thanks can be given to Kevin Davis and Dave Nicoll for their extra efforts on opening day. While you were all basking in 77 degree temperatures and getting that first round in, these guys volunteered to paint the vestibule and finish up various small projects. All while listening to you regale in your first round-of-the year stories over a cold beer. Don t forget - the Dining Room is now open for a full breakfast on Saturday morning, this complements the Friday night Dinner and Sunday morning breakfasts that are offered year round. As always, suggestions, comments (and lavish praises) are always welcome. Remember, it s on the House! Sunday June 14, 2015 We are holding our first (hopefully annual) Cigar, Scotch and Beer afternoon. 2:00pm 5:00pm on the patio Hope to see you there! Answers to the Handicap Quiz from page 3: 1.
