2 Secretary s Sidelines Greetings everybody. Please join me in giving a warm welcome to new members. Please help them to fit in during the first few weeks. They will need targets at short distances at first. They have been told most of the rules of fitting in but may require polite reminders from time to time. Remember you were once a beginner, although in a few cases it was more than a few years ago. They are :- Sharon Mayhew, Kathy White, Sarah Anstee, Paul Sears, Roger Still, Michael Howe, Paul Giurgiv, and Harry Dunnage (junior). Other new people who may join soon are Steve Keys, Michael Penny and Sam Barnett (Junior), who are archers of varying experience. Other archers have also made enquiries. New membership cards are being issued. If you have not received yours ask me when you see me on the field. Coaching New members The most important thing to remember from your course is KEEP YOUR BOW ARM STILL when you release the arrow, watching as it flies though the air above your hand and hits the target; only then do you lower your arm. The bow will rotate in your hand if you are holding it correctly, i.e. Not gripping the handle and using the bow sling correctly Experienced archers Assuming you are not griping the bow!! (See above) First may I remind you of the triangle which must be kept constant for each arrow in all planes; vertical, horizontal and in size e.g. draw length? The triangle starts at the top of the bow, comes down the front to the grip, along the arrow to your string fingers and up the string to the top of the bow. How to do this? 1. Stand up straight (head up; shoulders back) 2. Turn your head to face the target. 3. Bring the bow up so it is vertical (arrow horizontal, never pointing upwards) 4. Do not aim the sight on the gold at this stage; you will tend to move your head! 5. With bow arm correct and rotating your shoulder, come to full draw (see previous months articles (you should be in a line vertical and horizontal) 6. Now aim (if you are too high or low move your waist) 7. Release as discussed last month. The force should act down the length of the arrow which, God willing, will go straight in the gold!!!!! Colin ********************** Captains Corner Hi all MKL Match v Sittingbourne A low turnout of 12 but with the new allowances for Longbow and Barebow we still lost versus a horde of juniors. We lost the pure score and lost the handicap. Their entire team scored in the 1500 s for handicap. One thing I will say is that I know I am a moany old bugger BUT the dress code of the Club has gone downhill considerably. On Sunday there were only three members who

3 wore Club colours, the rest wore a collection of various coloured clothing. The Club requests that when we meet other Clubs for MKL and Internal shoots that the dress code is Club colours OR Green and White. As you are representing the Club it would be nice if the members maintained this for MKL shoots. The away MKL shoots I expect green and white or club colours. Not a lot to ask as smartness is one thing that we can all aspire too. I hope when you go to open events you wear Club colours or Green and white. You may have noticed that Sittingbourne Archers all wore white tops. Anything can be worn on practice days obviously. While I am on a moan, the score sheets were not good on Sunday, I know they are slightly different from our ones BUT not that different. There is a box for distance hits, and Distance score. Please use them as it helps you find any errors easily. The running (R/T) column is for the running total from start to finish. A ticking off came from Peter Dallas, the organiser, was that arrow values had been changed by the scorer and not signed off by me, Field Captain. This should not happen, treat these shoots as an open shoots with judges. If a mistake happens please call, in the case of a home shoot, me, or the opposition field captain to do the correction. Arrow score changes could and should disqualify that archer (not the scorer) but the archer as they signed for the incorrectly filled out score sheet. And one final thing if you have an even number of hits you must have an even score, this should be your last check BEFORE you hand it over to be signed by the archers. See scan on last page Moany old bugger Chairman s Cup 20 th April The Chairman s cup this year was on the Easter Sunday. This may have been one of the reasons for the low turn out. I can t believe that it was anything to do with the weather forecast. It was lucky that it did not rain at Crecy, Pointers or Agincourt, or we would all be speaking FRENCH. Nevertheless, those that shot will only gloat for a few months. The Lady Chair was on the field to start us off. Chris Bearman, Tyrone Gibson, John Gibson, Ian Sharp, June Mansfield, Alf Kershaw, and me split the trophies and medals. Ken won the best supporter medal too. Full results on the website. Kent Invitation 4 th May The list from ACA is long, including Clive Jeffery, Dave Corke, Steve Mills, Deryck Leach, Stuart Evans, John Gibson, Alf Kershaw and me. Some other names you will know Kay Holliman and Barry Maytum. Crystal Palace shoot 27 th April A few of ACA archers managed to get in in time including me, Clive Jeffery, Alf Kershaw, Stuart and Malcolm Evans. Clive and Alf had memorable days as Clive did a PB and Second place Compound and Alf got his 3 gold end at 80yds. Well done

4 to both. The rest of us struggled with the wind. A new National record was set by Clinton Hill Longbow York 650 ish an obscene score for a longbow. Anyone want to buy a longbow? Captains Challenge date change now 31 st August. Geoff B ******************************** Hi everyone I have been asked to arrange our annual Family Day which takes places this year on Saturday, 28 June at 1:00 p.m. As usual the club will provide the bread rolls, sauces and spread as well as the all important ingredients for tea/coffee but club members need to remember to bring along their own meat or vegi options to cook. Sandra has very kindly offered to bring along her famous rice salad as well as onions to go on the bbq, Jean is bringing along her lovely potato salad and I will bring along some lettuce etc. Other donations are always welcome! I will be up the field from late morning and will accept all offers of help to set up. Please come along and help make this event the success it has been in the past and bring along friends and family who can, if they want, have a go at shooting a few arrows.
