VOLUME 4 [WINTER] #THEHAWKHORSE Winter Racing is a surprise package : unearthing hidden talents to follow and providing a quality finale to the - rider and trainer standings. In many ways, it was a White Winter, as Hawkesbury's veteran horseman Garry White easily secured the local trainer premiership with winners from the meetings, placing third overall. For Brenton Avdulla, a Hawkesbury Rider Championship was the cherry on top of a stellar season in Sydney claiming his first Metro title along with the Golden Slipper highlighted no doubt by a win in the Hawkesbury Gold Cup in April on Kingsguard. A vintage crop of Apprentice riders were in high demand at Hawkesbury, with Jean Van Overmeire edging a quality field of riders to secure the premiership, and the AREA Rising Star Series. And the Blue Army? A cavalry of James Cummings runners were dominant here this season, with Godolphin providing their new trainer with winners. A new season begins and Spring is around the corner. Time for racing to bloom.

cruise control The season of Avdulla A season of firsts with incredible highs and a few unexpected lows put jockey Brenton Avdulla into cruise control when visiting Hawkesbury. In rides, he rode the winner on occasions to just edge his rival Tye Angland by one win. In the city, the margin was more defiant, with his nemesis of the previous season, Hugh Bowman, settling for second, a good wins behind Avdulla who finished with winners from rides. The rise of Avdulla this season has been defined by his consistency, riding to a peak that saw him capture the Golden Slipper on Estijaab for Team Hawkes. The disappointment of the previous season sent Avdulla into overdrive, and for the past twelve months a man on a mission has become the first to conquer the provincial, metropolitan and Sydney premierships. It hurt, Avdulla told The Daily Telegraph. To be honest, for most of last season I didn t worry about the premiership and didn t think I could win it. I think back on it now and I was doing things differently to what I had been doing all season and it obviously didn t work, he said. If I had stuck solid to what had been working for me it might have been different but you learn from those experiences. The same hard work put him well ahead of Bowman in last season's premiership, before a Winx-like finish pun intended gave Hugh the upper hand. From a maiden Group win at the sprightly age of on Secret Admirer to the "Grand Slam" victory of Estijaab in the Slipper, Avdulla has maintained a top-level groove.

In August, Avdulla made a brief appearance in Sydney to receive the George Moore Medal for the metro premiership at the Racing NSW awards, following a holiday in Europe and amid a lucrative three week riding stint in Japan. It is an great honour to win the Sydney premiership, Avdulla said. Never in my wildest dreams did I think it was possible to win the premiership, let alone to win it convincingly." Avdulla settled into the Japanese rhythm quickly, with the momentum of his premiership title translating into further success with a winner at his first meeting at Kokura. "Thank you very much. It's a big career highlight to win an international race," Avdulla said at the postrace presentation. cruise control "[It's] very special. I was coming to Japan hopefully to try and ride one winner, so to win the feature on my first day riding, I'm very emotional. "It's been a good year for me." The highlight from his Hawkesbury appearances came in the club's biggest race, the Group Livamol Hawkesbury Gold Cup, riding Kingsguard for long-time supporters Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes. Riding Entry Ticket for trainer Toru Miya, Avdulla stole the feature sprint, the Kyushu Sports Hai, in a thrilling five-way go at the finish, paying a healthy $. for punters. With the Spring Carnival to sharpen up for and to a wedding to plan, Avdulla will be in hot demand when returning from Japan. Knowing his stubborn determination, he'll just find another gear.

All the King's horses Cummings flexes muscles of the Godolphin Army Such is the dominance of the Godolphin breeding and racing operation, the thoroughbred obsession of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, that his workforce has become known as the Blue Army. And locally, the figures don't lie, with the year old trainer having an enviable strike rate of nearly % winners-to-runners at Hawkesbury, with eight wins separating him and rivals Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott the - premiers. And the new field marshal, per say, of this army secured a small but worthwhile victory for his Emirati master with the - Hawkesbury Trainer Premiership. Hawkesbury trainer Garry White held third overall from the Hawkes trio, Hawkesbury Guineas-winning trainer Chris Waller and John Thompson, with Gerald Ryan and Mark Newham within the top ten. James Cummings oversees the work of Godolphin's horses at Crown Lodge in Warwick Farm, at Carbine Lodge in Melbourne and at the picturesque main base in Agnes Banks, just fifteen minutes drive from Hawkesbury Racecourse. With this three-pronged approach, Cummings has made an impressive start to his tenure as head trainer in Australia with Group Winners Alizee, Kementari, Impending and veteran Hartnell. The Godolphin winners included the progressive filly Soothing, Tiki Bar, Vellor, Wander, Tiny Taj, Inquiry, Schubert and Attracted, all of whom would go on to win or place at metro grade. A blue jacket with emblazoned "Fly Emirates" slogan is a familiar sight at Hawkesbury, however Cummings is a rarity at Clarendon, with Darren Beadman or Nacim Dilmi representing on race days.

Godolphin, formally known as Darley when under the care of Peter Snowden, have featured prominently at Hawkesbury's Stand Alone Saturday meeting each year. The team have won the Guineas, Gold Rush, Clarendon Stakes and the Crown they sponsor multiple times with handy gallopers Kanzan, Aerobatics, Free Wheeling, Limes, Furnaces, Fravashi and Serenissima. Cummings will look to add more silverware to Godolphin's cabinet from Hawkesbury in the - season, following the win of import Duca Valentinois in last year's Lander Toyota Ladies Day Cup. The Irish-bred gelding was fourth to Kingsguard in the Livamol Hawkesbury Gold Cup, and began his Spring campaign this month with quiet trial at Warwick Farm.

The White Formula for Success A record-equalling performance by Garry White handed the veteran trainer another local premiership. Newsletters are published by clubs, churches, societies, associations, and businesses especially companies to provide information of interest to members, customers, or employees. White ended the - season with a joint career best effort of winners, with of those on home turf at Hawkesbury equaling his effort for the - season. White has been training for prominent breeder and owner Grahame Mapp, known for his familiar yellow sleeved, brown star and yellow capped silks, for over years. Hobartville Stud would be spoiled this season with And So It Goes, Brown Thomas, Fifth Affair, Lady Chalfont, Military Academy and Redemption Road all winning at Hawkesbury. Perhaps White's greatest success came with the plain black mare Letter To Juliette, who progressed from a Hawkesbury benchmark to take the Orange Cup en route to a blowout win at Randwick in a competitive benchmark when a $ chance. White is rarely without his shadow - the pint sized pocket rocket Ashleigh Borg left. His hardworking apprentice is in sparkling form this month, winning on Brown Thomas, Lady Chalfont and twice on Royal Hootenanny at Hawkesbury and Newcastle in the new - Season.

Way to go, JVO Jean Van Overmeire The rising Star Jean Van Overmeire only had to turn up and ride in the final heat of the Rising Star Series at Hawkesbury on an average meeting in late June. Last year I won the country apprentices title and I was using that as a stepping stone to the provincial area, Van Overmeire told The Daily Telegraph. The -year-old did more than enough, as he has throughout the season, to get the best from the locally-trained favourite Legistation for Wade Slinkard in the shadows of the post. His work in the bush earned the respect of leading trainers Gerald Ryan, Kim Waugh, Kris Lees and his master Bjorn Baker along with the Goulburn-based Frenchman Jean Dubois. It s been hard work but it s a great feeling to win said Van Overmeire when dismounting. The apprentice held off the fast finish of Jarrett for Patrick Scorse and Charcuterie for Mikayla Weir, his two main rivals in the Racing Academy Series. The career of the South African-born, English-raised Jockey has been a slow burn of humble beginnings and his first major success came with the Country Apprentices title last year. The pair have enjoyed success with talented colt Aylmerton, Gitan, Mate Story and Guerrier the latter running a credible fourth in the G Champagne Stakes at Randwick in the Autumn. Van Overmeire finished second in the Sydney Metropolitan Apprentice premiership to main rival Rachel King, yet he accounted for her in the Provincial standings with. winners to accompany his Hawkesbury Apprentice title. Above Tracey O'Hara and Rodney Quinn present Jean Van Overmiere with the AREA Rising Star Series Cup.

A King proves the Key for comeback Queen The daunting task of being a mother to two young children is a sideline activity for Robyn Freeman-Key, who continues her comeback to the saddle with a special association with a horse called King Tomlola. Key first rode the King in his debut for the Gerald Ryan stable, following a transfer from Adelaide, in a maiden at Newcastle when sent off as an $. chance. The pair won by three lengths. It marked a significant milestone for Key, evident by her small pump of her fist when crossing the line at Newcastle. Since starting to ride competitively again in December last year, she has had to work hard to earn rides and get the right horses. I struggled a little when I first came back, I didn t expect it to be as hard as it was to get chances" Key told Ray Thomas. I was almost ready to call it a day when I gave trainer Gerald Ryan a call and he said to come over and ride some work for him." King Tomlola and Key became unbeatable at Hawkesbury, with defiant wins over 1400m, 1500m and finally 1800m when shouldering 62kg to lead all the way. Her husband Stu, and children James, 3, and Zara, 1, were on course as her personal cheer squad for the Hawkesbury Hat Trick. Juggling home life with riding, and given husband Stu has a full time job too, means Key has often been advised to retire. A lot of people questioned me after having kids why didn t I retire but I thought if I could get my weight down and confidence back, there is no reason why I can t ride again. The results have provided a firm answer, with wins on Purple Cup and Mr Snowman for Adam Wadick on the country circuit, and a hardfought win on Road to Sundown at Nowra for her main supporter, Gerald Ryan. King Tomlola might have been sent for a spell, but Key is far from slowing down on her journey back into the winner's stall. 12 As he always has, McDonald made a statement when returning for his first meeting in May this year by riding a double for fellow Kiwi Chris Waller at Warwick Farm. Good things have come in twos so far for McDonald, who rode a double at Warwick Farm on the opening meeting of the season on August for Chris Waller and David Pfieffer. J-Mac's Back A controversial exit from the spotlight and an eighteen month suspension from the saddle was put to rest with an authoritative double at Hawkesbury by champion jockey James McDonald. This followed a quick trip to Hawkesbury for wins on Signore Fox for Peter and Paul Snowden left and a beautifully-timed ride on the flashy White Boots for Kim Waugh below. Two days later, he struck for the old masters Godolphin on Soothing, and defeated their star colt Kementari on Pierata for Greg Hickman in a thrilling Group Missile Stakes at Randwick. McDonald was the number one rider for Godolphin under John O'Shea before he placed a $ wager on Astern when riding the colt to win on debut at Randwick in.

Kinky Boots A copper chestnut coat is rare enough in the bay-dominated world of thoroughbred coats, but four perfect white socks and white face make White Boots one of the flashiest horses to run at Hawkesbury! The son of Kentucky Derby and Dubai World Cup winner Animal Kingdom is trained by Kim Waugh at Wyong, who says the horse has a dedicated fan club of connections who idolize the gelding. White Boots has the talent to match his looks, and has now won five of his seven starts, including a last start victory in the city at Canterbury on a substantial rise from his first win in a Tuncurry Maiden. The winner of nearly $,, and $, in BOBs bonuses, White Boots has only missed the place once when an unlucky fourth at Scone in December last year. Tricolours find purple patch of form James Moss had the ambition to take on the hugely competitive market of racehorse syndication spearheaded by Dynamic, Triple Crown, Darby and James Harron with a mixture of tried and young horses.his gamble paid off and his careful choice of candidates have delivered for his jubilant groups of connections. With just over a dozen racehorses, Moss has already enjoyed two Group wins since beginning his syndication in November with Pecans, who won Hawkesbury's Godolphin Crown G in April, followed by strong wins to Ticked and Royal Witness right, a lightly raced son of Star Witness who will be set for a Summer campaign by trainer Joe Pride. Jerry becomes a true local Our famous adopted apprentice Qin "Jerry" Yong added another milestone to his blossoming young career when winning his first race at Hawkesbury on the Slinkard-trained Legistation. The seven year old gelding by former Coolmore shuttler Aussie Rules has won six of his eight starts at Hawkesbury, with six different riders aboard for his six wins! First ridden by Anthony Cavallo, Legistation has won under Nick Heywood, Jay Ford, Chad Lever, Jean Van Overmeire and of course, Qin Yong. His other two starts at Hawkesbury, for Robbie Brewer and Claire Nutman, resulted in a second and third.

Polytrack "perfect" With just over two months of full work over the surface, trainers and track riders have warmly embraced Hawkesbury's Polytrack, and are starting to benefit with impressive results of runners using the all weather track. The popularity of the near- m circuit has trainers talking - and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. "Since we've put this track in we've had a dozen inquiries from other trainers about coming to Hawkesbury to train" said track manager, Jeff Haynes. "We've worked horses per-day, where some days we have half-pace work and others three-quarter and full pace. There's hardly any noise which means there is no 'jarring'... and the injury rate really drops!". With the sporadic conditions of Hawkesbury, and the greater NSW climate having to endure a testing Winter, a consistent surface has mean a more consistent training program for horses. "The track is as good at am as it is at pm, there is no deterioration, so trainers don't have to rush to get their horses on the best ground in the morning". From the education of young horses to the seasoned campaigns of older horses, the Polytrack is proving to be a benefit to all types of racehorse, particularly those competing at Canberra on the similar ACTON surface. Being able to work on the Polytrack is the key, said trainer, Scott Singleton. The locals Canberra trainers had an advantage before, but you can go there now with a bit more confidence.

The People's Chairman He might live across the road from the racecourse, but as Hawkesbury Race Club Chairman, Ken Quigley won't be tired of watching horses go around anytime soon. Quigley is a punter's pal, known for his charismatic approach to welcoming guests to the club and his particular knack with backing the quinella in a race. As a younger man, Quigley was the Fruit and Veg "providore" of the Hawkesbury, having previously been with City Markets and finally Flemington Markets. After years, retirement beckoned - a modest exit from the fresh food business when he "thought it was just about time". Joining as a member of the Race Club in, Quigley was appointed as a board member in and succeeded long term Chairman John Hiatt OAM in. " years" he sighs, "gee it's gone quick!" In, Quigley seized a unique opportunity to buy his current Racing Stables base in Rickaby Street, where daughter and son-in-law Tara & Philippe Vigouroux train their horses. His racing highlight came in the same year, with Tara training her father's horse Narrabeen to win the opening race on Hawkesbury Gold Cup day in December. "That was the highlight, but owning a winner anywhere is always good. Doesn't matter where it is the horse wins you are as happy as Larry!" "I'm now enjoying going around with Phil Vigouroux to country and provincial tracks, meeting new people and seeing other courses. They work hard". Hawkesbury Race Club member number is their biggest supporter and has a few stories to tell, but perhaps not all ready to be published yet. "If you want my life story" he quips with a sidelong glance, "You haven't got enough paper".

The Wolf of Waller Street Another day, another stamp of dominance for the Chris Waller stable - and a double for McDonald. It might have been Hawkesbury's Historic Mile, but there were no surprises in the edition. Mister Sea Wolf, an Irish expat who broke through at his ninth Australian start in the Listed Winter Challenge at Rosehill, again had the measure of Godolphin's honest gelding Flow in the m Listed Rowley Mile. The Wolf, and the in-form James McDonald, stalked Flow and Kerrin McEvoy throughout the race before pouncing at the top of the straight with the two favourites clearing away from the rest of the field. "It was an easy watch from the metres," Waller's representative Liam Prior said. "He has really sharpened up with the blinkers on and is finding consistency." "It is good to see him put two together and he is on the right path heading to some of the better races in the spring." LIAM PRIOR The son of Amadeus Wolf is the halfbrother to the Irish G winner and now shuttle sire Cable Bay, and maternal grandson of the dual G winner Cherokee Rose - herself a half-sister to champion New Zealand sire Volksraad.

Track Chat Timely wins for Attard & Austin From Kembla with Love Her name is French for 'love letter' and the jovial French trainer Philippe and his wife Tara Vigouroux were glad she put her stamp on the Maiden Handicap m at Kembla Grange. The lightly-raced filly Lettre D Amour broke through at only her fourth start, upsetting the odds-on favorite at the healthy price of $. A superb Jeff Penza ride enabled the well-named Lettre D Amour by Foreplay from Red Letter Daze to narrowly beat Art Of More in a tight finish. She is out of a mare who won plenty of races, and she should be even better next preparation, perhaps over longer distances, commented co-trainer Philippe. Lettre D Amour was Team Vigouroux s fourth winner this year, having also scored with Enigami Port Macquarie, February, Uncle Sugar Tamworth, March and Azcannyaz Muswellbrook, April. Only a week out from the conclusion of the - season, winners for Wayne Austin and Jason Attard both overcame earlier setbacks in their careers to post important comeback victories at Goulburn. Austin s Talladega Knight $ broke through in the m Maiden Handicap, and Attard s oddson favorite Cinderconi $. landed the m Class Handicap. Though their winning margins weren t great, there was plenty of merit in both performances. Talladega Knight had a few problems and had to be gelded, Austin said. It took a while to get him going, but he works well and I feel he will manage m to m. Cinderconi, a four-year-old daughter of former top sprinter Nicconi, was having only her fourth start and her third for her new trainer. I was a bit worried about her beforehand on the firm track Good, but she got the job done, Attard said. Her previous run at Hawkesbury when third to Redemption Road on July was good, and I dropped her back to country class to give her a bit of confidence.

Family Dynasty a dynamic force The family that works together, wins together! Husband and wife training duo Mitchell and Desiree Kearney had Dynamic Dynasty perfectly placed, and the gelding lived up to his name with a dynamic barrier to box performance at Scone pictured below, photo by Scone Race Club. The pair gave credit to family members, who play such an integral role in their training business. Without their help, Mitch and I would not be able to do what we are doing, said Desiree. My brother William is our main trackwork rider and Mitch s brother Shane also does a great job working around the stables, cleaning out boxes, etc. As well, my cousin Robbie Brewer comes in and helps with fast work. We have a great staff and we re very appreciative of everyone s support. And they have no doubt Hawkesbury s new PolyTrack surface has played a major role in getting Dynamic Dynasty back into winning form. He was a bit jointy when he arrived, and being able to work on the synthetic track since it was opened earlier this month has improved him by several lengths, Mrs Kearney said. Reiby Ripper They say patience is a virtue, and Jason Attard rewarded the patience of his biggest supporters, Hawkesbury Race Club Vice Chairman Sid Kelly and wife Carolyn, with the bonny mare Reiby Rampart. Ridden by Adam Hyeronimus, Reiby Rampart pictured above, photo by the ATC, a five-year-old daughter of Shaft, clinched the fourth win of her career by easily taking the Benchmark Handicap at Royal Randwick over m. That was her first run since finishing second over the same course at Randwick a month ago May, Attard said. Attard was especially pleased that the Kelly's were on course to witness their homebred's victory at Saturday grade, the first for her at Randwick where she has missed a place only once in four starts, in last year s Provincial Championships Final. He trains his horses at the Kelly s historic Reibycroft Stud at Freeman s Reach and, understandably, regards the couple as family. Reiby Rampart went within a nostril of a metropolitan double at Rosehill on August, when being nabbed right on the line by the fast finishing Mapmaker over m. Ridden again by Adam Hyeronimus, Reiby lead for most of the straight to go down fighting at odds of $. "It was an amazing ride and super effort by the mare" praised Attard following the run.

Widdup sets the bar high with star colt Brad Widdup handled some champions during his lengthy stint with Crown Lodge, subsequently Darley and then Godolphin. And whilst his classy YO colt Sandbar is yet to earn that tag, there s no doubt he is a pretty special horse as far as his now trainer is concerned. The Snitzel three-year-old has been a real flagbearer for Widdup s Hawkesbury stable since the experienced horseman took up training in April last year. Sandbar provided him with his first black type winner the Lonhro Plate at Warwick Farm in February and also gave him his first runner in the world s richest juvenile race, the Golden Slipper Stakes, at Rosehill the following month. Having his first start for his three-year-old season, Sandbar won his third race from six starts and gave his trainer another black type victory when he toppled Charge and Golden Tycoon in the $, Listed Rosebud over m. He s a bit underrated, but I don t mind that at all, Widdup said of Sandbar following the win. It was good to get another feature victory out of the way early in the season" Provincial Prizemoney Increase Welcomed Following an in-depth Strategic Plan to defray the ongoing costs of racehorse ownership and increasing cash flow for trainers, Racing NSW has announced an increase in prize money across the state. From September, prizemoney will increase by more than $ million annually, a move Hawkesbury Race Club chief executive Greg Rudolph has welcomed. For some time now, the Provincial Race Clubs have been working with Racing NSW on the implementation of prizemoney increases, he said. It is pleasing that, not only will our standard Provincial prizemoney increase to $ 5,, but the distribution of prizemoney will provide extra incentive to unplaced runners and connections. The Provincial club s are very supportive of this rationale and it should be welcomed by all. Rudolph said there was a bright future ahead for the club, and the addition of extra prize money added to that. Rudolph said the club s listed races would also benefit. An additional feature of the prizemoney announcement, will be higher stakes for our Group and Listed Races, commencing in the Spring, he said. As a result, next year s Stand Alone Saturday will have record prizemoney, which is a further incentive for our horses to target at the end of the Autumn.

Is there a bigger thrill than owning a winner? Popular Racenet journalist Clinton Payne is experiencing an owners dream, with a horse purchased online for just $, winning on debut with the best yet to come. Spright heals in time Rejuvenated mare Spright pictured above, photo by Darren Winningham survived the perils of home sickness to steal the G WJ Healy Stakes at Doomben in late June. Her trainer, Garry Frazer, sent the mare back to Hawkesbury after campaigning in Brisbane saw her struggle on two wet tracks. I took her home for days after her last run. My son Jordan who has been looking after her up here said she wasn t happy, Frazer said. She goes out in her paddock at home where she s a lot more relaxed and I thought I d put the blinkers back on her. A pleasing piece of work a week before the race gave team Frazer the confidence to send the mare north again for another stakes attempt. Owned in partnership with Dr Chris Lawlor from Ausbred Thoroughbreds and founder of International Animal Health Products, Paine watched his YO filly Etheridge below slice through the field to win for Jason Collett and trainer John Thompson. "The Syndicate includes mates that have never had a winner before and the joy it brought to them was a great reminder of what racehorse ownership can offer there is nothing like the feeling I can assure you" said Payne on Racenet. "It s not always an easy ride being an owner, there s more down times as a rule than good times but thinking back to Sunday and seeing the look on my nephew s face, his first horse and the thrill it gave the others owners and family members that were at Hawkesbury, you can t put a price on it." Etheridge, by Roman Emperor from the Zabeel mare Miss Meliss, is the full sister to the impressive Richard Freedman-trained stayer Roman Son, who won easily at this year's Stand Alone Saturday meeting over m. Ridden by Michael Cahill, the daughter of Hinchinbrook hooked widest when turning for home and unleashed her trademark sprint over the concluding m to score. The mare has since been spelled before being aimed at a spring carnival campaign in Melbourne. Getting back on top of the ground was another factor in her favour. She can really let down on a firm track, Frazer said.
