1 STEWARDS REPORT Wine Country Race Club CESSNOCK RACECOURSE Friday 24 November 2017 Weather: Fine Track: Good (4) Upgraded to Good (3) at 11:45am Rail: True STEWARDS: D L Carr (Chairman), D M Greer, J T Penfold and cadet C K McIntosh Supplementary Reports NEWCASTLE TRACKWORK Tuesday 3 October 2017 An inquiry was opened into the reasons surrounding the mare Natadola trained by Paul Perry breaking down during trackwork. Natadola, which was undertaking fast work on the Beaumont track appeared to breakdown near the 50m. Local Veterinarian Dr Jamie Barnes confirmed a fracture to its nearside shoulder and as a result the mare was euthanised on humane grounds. Trainer P Perry provided stable treatment records for Natadola for a 6 month period prior to the incident occurring. He explained that Natadola had been working well and was undertaking its final gallop before being nominated for a suitable race at Taree the following week. A report was provided from Dr Barnes detailing the fracture to its nearside shoulder. The inquiry was concluded when stewards were satisfied that there was no pre-existing injury that could have led to the breakdown. NEWCASTLE Sunday 19 November 2017 RACE 5 Tyrrell s Wines Class 1 & Maiden Plate 1850m Mister Rossa Trainer Mr B Smith reported that a thorough examination by his stable veterinarian had revealed the gelding to have some soreness to its knees, for which it had been treated. Mr Smith was told that he must furnish a veterinary clearance prior to Mister Rossa racing again. Late Riding Changes As B Spriggs was indisposed due to illness Stewards permitted the following rider alterations: Race 2 Race 3 Race 6 Coronita non-claiming apprentice J Van Overmeire Athena s Voice A Layt Fine Behind J Adams RACE 1 Hit Boxing Day Newcastle Class 2 Handicap 900m Uthred When questioned regarding the performance, apprentice C Gallagher stated that his mount was slow to begin and shortly after the start clipped the heels of Kettering, which shifted in, resulting in his mount blundering badly and losing further ground. Apprentice Gallagher stated that he rode his mount along throughout the event in an attempt to regain touch with the field, however his mount was unable to muster sufficient speed at any stage and tailed the field throughout. Apprentice Gallagher added that Uthred may not have appreciated the firm track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

2 RACE 2 Parsons Pokolbin Produce Maiden Handicap 900m Time Ruler Rider A Bullock reported that his mount hung in throughout the early and middle stages and proved difficult to ride. Goldylux Bumped on jumping by All You, which was taken in by Cozursmart. Coronita A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Reorder Slow to begin. Raced ungenerously throughout the early and middle stages and near the 500m was checked when crowded by Time Ruler, which hung in despite the efforts of its rider. Trainer Mr C Porter was told that a warning would be placed on the gelding s record regarding its racing manners. All You Was buffeted on jumping between Goldylux and Cozursmart, which began awkwardly and shifted in. Near the 800m was hampered and carried in by Zarsis. Be Five Unicorn Slow to begin. Calamity Mo On jumping made contact with the off-side front gate, which was slow to open. This matter was brought to the attention of the Starter and was rectified prior to Race 3. Raced wide without cover throughout the event. Hung out rounding the home turn and ran wider. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer T McIntosh was told that a warning would be placed on the filly s record regarding its racing manners. Cozursmart Began awkwardly. Star Riva On jumping made contact with the off-side front gate, which was slow to open. This matter was brought to the attention of the Starter and was rectified prior to Race 3. Zarsis Began awkwardly and lost ground. RACE 3 Tyrrell s Wines Maiden Plate 1570m Full On Billy For some distance from the 600m until straightening was badly held up on the heels of the weakening Outsnip and lost significant ground. Shadow Of Dreams Overraced in the middle stages. Wilton Slow to begin. Raced wide without cover throughout the early and middle stages. Beebeau From its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in in the early stages to obtain cover. Rounding the home turn, when held up, had to be checked away from the heels of Soi Dream. Beebeau was then shifted to the extreme outside on straightening to obtain clear running. Eye See More Slow to begin. On Sunshine Slow to begin. Outsnip Rider B Hodder could offer no explanation for the performance of the mare, which compounded from the 600m and was beaten 28 lengths. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer Mr L Thomas was told that Outsnip must barrier trial to the satisfaction of Stewards prior to racing again. Mr Thomas subsequently reported that Outsnip was found to be sore across the back in the days following the race. Soi Dream Slow to begin.

3 RACE 4 IGA Liquor Benchmark 65 Handicap 2125m Miss Tickles Rounding the first turn near the 1900m was steadied to avoid the heels of Hussonplaza (J Penza), which shifted in when not quite clear. J Penza was told to ensure he is the required 2 lengths clear when shifting ground. Dr Kimble When questioned regarding the performance, rider A Bullock stated that he was instructed to settle in a forward position and after being caught wide in the early stages he allowed his mount to stride forward and assume a position outside the leader Sunday Swindler near the 1350m. He stated that when Lobban Dynamite improved to his mount s outside approaching the 900m his mount became immediately under pressure and was disappointing in that it was a beaten horse as far out as the 600m. A Bullock added that as he had concerns with his mount s action he eased it down over the final 200m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer Mr G Preston was at a loss to explain the performance and subsequently reported that a thorough examination by his stable veterinarian had revealed nothing amiss with the gelding. Lobban Dynamite Slow to begin. Raced wide without cover for the majority of the race. Sunday Swindler Began awkwardly. Lucky Ima Cugat Rider S Lisnyy reported that his mount raced ungenerously throughout the event, was inclined to lay in in the straight and proved difficult to ride out. Celtic Tiger A pre-race veterinary examination of the gelding, which was backing up after racing at Muswellbrook on Monday 20 November 2017, passed it suitable to race. Trainer Mr D Jackson advised that Celtic Tiger would now be spelled. Hussonplaza Over the final strides was unable to be ridden out when racing in restricted room between Miss Tickles and Lucky Ima Cugat, which shifted in. S Lisnyy (Lucky Ima Cugat) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR 137(a) in that passing and after the winning post he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of Hussonplaza, which had to be checked when crowded between Lucky Ima Cugat and Miss Tickles. S Lisnyy s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Saturday 2 December 2017 and to expire on Wednesday 6 December 2017, on which day he may ride. Rembetica A pre-race veterinary examination of the gelding passed it suitable to race. On jumping was checked when crowded between Below The Belt and Sunday Swindler, which began awkwardly and shifted out. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to have some swelling to its off-fore tendon, with no associated lameness. Trainer Ms D Lumsden was told that she must furnish a veterinary clearance for Rembetica prior to the gelding racing again. Below The Belt For some distance approaching and rounding the first turn raced in restricted room to the inside of Lucky Ima Cugat, which was racing ungenerously, then shortly after had to be checked when Lucky Ima Cugat shifted in away from Miss Tickles. As Stewards were of the view that the incident was predominantly due to the racing manners of Lucky Ima Cugat no action was taken against any rider. RACE 5 The Royal Oak Hotel Cessnock Cup 1350m I m Danny A pre-race veterinary examination of the gelding, which had a healing wound to its head, passed it fit to start. Laid out rounding the home turn. Next Level Slow to begin. For some distance passing the 600m was awkwardly positioned close to the heels of Von Classic Hero when endeavouring to improve between that runner and Invicta where there was insufficient room.

4 Pippi s Pride Overraced throughout the early and middle stages. Tycoon Mar Began awkwardly and made contact with its near-side front gate. Star Bid Bounded on jumping and lost ground. RACE 6 East Cessnock Bowling Club Maiden Plate 1150m Allaru Approaching the 200m, when weakening, was steadied when momentarily crowded between Classy Hussy and Destiny s Choice, which both shifted slight ground. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the near-fore leg. Trainer Mr P Farrell was told that he must furnish a veterinary clearance prior to Allaru racing again. Destiny s Choice On return to scale A Bullock, rider of the second placegetter, lodged an objection against Classy Hussy being declared the winner alleging interference over the concluding stages. After taking evidence from all parties it was established that Classy Hussy was inclined to lay out under pressure over the final 100m and approximately two strides prior to the winning post shifted out and bumped Destiny s Choice, which was carried slightly wider. Bearing in mind the nature of the interference, the manner in which both horses were finishing off the race and the margin of a long head between them at the finish Stewards could not be satisfied that the interference had a material impact on the placings and the objection was dismissed. Shape Of You A pre-race veterinary examination of the gelding, which slipped over in its tie-up stall prior to race 1, passed it fit to start. Classy Hussy Laid out under pressure over the final 100m. So Dizzy Slow to begin. Passing the 800m was steadied when crowded by Red Notice (apprentice J Van Overmeire), which shifted in before being corrected by its rider. Apprentice Van Overmeire was told to exercise more care. Master Wahoo A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding, which tailed off throughout and was beaten 22 lengths, revealed no abnormalities. Trainer Mr D Phegan advised that it was now his intention to increase the distance of the gelding s races and drop it back to non-tab grade. Acting on this assurance Mr Phegan was told that a warning would be placed on the gelding s record regarding the poor performance. Into The Fray Slow to begin. RACE 7 Cessnock Leagues Club Benchmark 55 Handicap 1570m Leave Ya Numba Was declared a late withdrawal at 3:47pm acting on veterinary advice that the gelding had sustained swelling to its off-side hip en route to the course. Trainer Mr T McIntosh advised that Leave Ya Numba would now be spelled. Acting on this assurance no action was taken. Morning Fare For some distance approaching and passing the 1100m raced in restricted room to the inside of Sulien, which was taken in slightly by Ayham (D Northey), which shifted in when not clear. D Northey was told to ensure that he leaves sufficient racing room for runners to his inside. Our Tax Return Overraced throughout the early and middle stages and passing the 1000m improved onto the heels of Morning Fare and had to be checked. When questioned regarding her riding rounding the home turn and in the straight, apprentice M Toms stated that her mount was held up approaching the home turn and as it was positioned inside the heels of Fastquest she was unable to shift wider and was obliged to look for runs through the field. She stated that rounding the home turn she endeavoured to improve into a run between Ayham and Sulien, however was disappointed for that

5 run when Sulien shifted out. She stated that she then shifted to the inside of Sulien and attempted a run between that runner and Prince Roo, however near the 150m was again disappointed when both runners shifted ground. She stated that she then shifted her mount to the inside of Prince Roo to obtain clear running approaching the 100m, however over the concluding stages was unable to be ridden out when held up on the heels of Zar Gold, which shifted out slightly, and as a consequence ran to the line without being fully tested. Jester Lionheart Near the 500m was steadied to avoid the heels of Fastquest (A Gibbons), which shifted out to improve when not clear. A Gibbons was told to exercise more care. Ayham Raced wide without cover throughout the early and middle stages. Serious Dancer Passing the 100m was bumped by Sulien, which shifted out away from Prince Roo, and for a short distance after was unable to be tested when racing in restricted room between Sulien and The Iron Maiden, which shifted in. The Iron Maiden On jumping was steadied when crowded between Serious Dancer and Sulien, which shifted out. RACE 8 The The Royal Oak Class 1 Handicap 1150m Final Impulse Raced wide without cover throughout. Kingston Was declared a late withdrawal at 3:19pm when the gelding was unable to arrive on course due to transport difficulties. The Free World From its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in in the early stages to obtain cover. Ondo Pasa A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. San Sierra Laid out under pressure in the straight. Back To My Bay Shifted out abruptly passing the 200m. Exit Only Hung in rounding the home turn and in the straight and for some distance after the 200m was held up on the heels of the weakening Ondo Pasa, before being shifted to the inside of Twice As Sweet passing the 100m to obtain clear running. Cream Of Oz As rider A Layt was overweight and there were no senior riders available at the weight, Stewards permitted apprentice L McPherson to be substituted as the rider. A Layt was fined $100 under AR 120(b). * Swab samples were obtained from all winners and the following runners: Race 4: Dr Kimble, Backhouse Billy (2), Sunday Swindler, Hussonplaza, Below The Belt, Casino Gift.
