1 STEWARDS REPORT Clarence River Jockey Club GRAFTON RACECOURSE 29 May 2017 Weather: Fine Track: Soft (5) Rail: +3m W/P to 1600m; +2m 1600m to 1200m; +4.5m 1200m to 400m; +3m 400m to W/P STEWARDS: B J Kliese (Chairman), M A Holloway & D R Smith RIDING CHANGES: As R Spokes, C Franklin and Ms C Schmidt were overweight, stewards permitted the following rider changes- Race 1 Race 3 Race 3 Race 7 Race 7 B Hodde (Sound of the Pound) L Rolls (Light Motion) T Harrison (I ll Miss You) J Taylor (Madam Kate) P Graham (Lady Enid) At a subsequent inquiry R spokes pleaded guilty to a charge under AR120(b) and was fined the sum of $100. C Franklin and Ms C Schmidt will be interviewed at a date to be fixed into the reasons they were unable to fulfil their engagements at the declared weights. RACE 1: Ace Glass & Aluminium C,G&E Maiden Handicap 1115m: Dixie Away Bounded on jumping. Approaching the 200m was momentarily inconvenienced when hampered. General Nelson Missed the start and was hampered shortly after. Locus Began awkwardly and was inclined to hang out and raced intractably in the early stages. When questioned regarding the performance of the gelding, rider J Lloyd explained his mount never travelled comfortably at any stage of the event and raced ungenerously throughout. J Lloyd said after establishing clear running in the home straight his mount was reluctant to improve between runners and race greenly when being placed under pressure and in his opinion was disappointing in its efforts to the line. A post race veterinary examination of the gelding revealed no abnormalities. Trainer Mr T Edmonds concurred with the sediments made by rider J Lloyd and explained the gelding sweated up noticeably and was uncharacteristic in its behaviours during the preliminary and never seemed focus. Further Mr T Edmonds advised it would be his intention for the gelding to be spelled and stated that in his opinion the gelding would take benefit from having time to mature. 1

2 Peyto Joe Trainer Mr P Minter advised that gelding would now be retired from racing. Sound of the Pound Began awkwardly. Raced wide throughout the early and middle stages. Passing the 300m was eased when crowded by General Nelson (B Looker), which shifted in slightly. B Looker was asked to exercise greater care in future. Stellar Power During the middle stages hung out placing its rider at some disadvantage. During the home straight raced greenly when being placed under pressure and near the 200m shied outwards away from another runner and from that point was not placed under full pressure over the concluding stages. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Trainer Mr B Dais was advised that a warning would be placed on the racing record of the gelding in relation to its manners throughout. Thru the Storm Blundered on jumping. Passing the 300m after being disappointed for a run was held up for clear running for a short distance when awkwardly placed on the heels of a weakening runner. Near the 200m when under pressure was momentarily inconvenienced when hampered. RACE 2: Ken Gill Painter & Decorator F&M Maiden Handicap 1115m: Aultbea Began awkwardly. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of the filly apprentice J Graham stated he was instructed to lead the event and after runners to his inside showed speed, he was forced to urge his mount forward to ride to instructions. Apprentice J Graham explained after he was forced to place his mount under some pressure to find the lead, where eventually his mount travelled well throughout the early and middle stages, however approaching the 400m apprentice J Graham explained his mount commenced to weaken and from that point failed to respond and was disappointing in its efforts to the line. A post race veterinary examination of the filly revealed it to be suffering from muscle soreness and to have tied up post race. Trainer Mr B Dais advised that the filly would now be spelled. Ayla s Angel Slow to begin (2 ½ L). Passing the 600m was restrained after improving onto heels and as result, became unbalanced for a stride. Bring Your Ay Game Missed the start (3L). Near the 300m bumped with Redeemable after being carried outwards by Hot Damn (L Cheshire), which shifted out slightly. L Cheshire was asked to exercise greater care when shifting ground. Approaching the 200m shifted out abruptly and bumped heavily with another runner. Denlago Passing the 150m was restrained when crowded and again near the 70m and from that point was fully tested over the concluding stages. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of the filly rider P Hammersley explained his mount had to be continually urged in a attempt to maintain its position with the field and failed to travel comfortably at any stage of the event. P Hammersley explained when placed under full pressure passing the 500m his mount failed to respond as expected and was disappointing in efforts to the line. A post race veterinary examination of the filly revealed no abnormalities. Trainer Mr D Kelly could offer no explanation for the fillys performance and although hampered over the concluding stages remained disappointed. Trainer Mr D Kelly advised that it would now be retired from his stable. Hot Damn Near the 800m was steadied after improving onto heels. 2

3 Miss Sminker Rounding the home turn was unable to improve for a short distance when awkwardly placed close to heels. Real Hype Crowded shortly after the start. Redeemable Near the 300m was bumped slightly and taken wider and approaching the 200m was bumped heavily and became unbalanced. Rider B Hodder (Redeemable) viewed the official patrol footage prior to the declaration of correct weight and was satisfied there were not sufficient grounds for objection. Skyreigns Raced greenly and was inclined to laid out during the event. Near the 300m ran out abruptly and from that point raced greenly when placed under pressure over the concluding stages. The manners of the filly were brought to the attention of trainer Mr S Phelps, who explained he would experiment with the filly s race day gear in a attempt to rectify its waywardness. RACE 3: Grafton Shopping World Butchery Benchmark 63 Handicap 2375m: I ll Miss You Raced wide in the early stages. Light Motion During the middle stages was steadied on a number of occasions to avoid heels after the tempo of the event slackened. Approaching and rounding the home turn was held up for clear running when awkwardly placed close to heels. Silver River Rounding the first turn was restrained when awkwardly placed in restricted room by Kingston Time (M Paget), which shifted in. M Paget was asked to exercise greater care in future when shifting ground. Near the 700m was steadied and blundered when awkwardly placed in restricted room after attempting to improve to the outside of weakening runner. Zizou Warrior Approaching the first turn was inclined to overrace in restricted room and rounding the first turn became unbalanced when bumped and crowded. RACE 4: Grafton Hire Grafton Guineas Prelude 3YO Country Plate 1420m: Care to Think Overraced in the middle stages. Good Timing Began awkwardly and was slow into stride. Approaching and passing the 600m was restrained after improving onto heels. I Am Spartar Raced wide throughout. Image of Love Passing the 600m was unable to improve when awkwardly placed close to heels. King Amadues Shortly after the start when inclined to carry its head low was reluctant to muster when being corrected by its rider. Trainer Mr M Butler explained the gelding does have a tendency to carry its head abnormally low and in his opinion was over corrected shortly after the start, causing it to lose ground. Trainer Mr M Butler was advised that the gelding would be monitored in its future starts, where the rider is to be made aware of the geldings tendencies. Miss Zodiac Shortly after entering the home straight was inconvenienced for a stride after becoming awkwardly placed close to heels and was shifted in to continue forward. 3

4 Phoenix Sunrise Inside the final 300m was inclined to lay out when being placed under pressure. Tierrasanta Raced wide throughout the early and middle stages. RACE 5: J R Richards & Sons Benchmark 60 Handicap 1420m: Fighting Belle Over the concluding stages had to be restrained when awkwardly placed close to heels and was unable to be ridden out in contention to fourth place. First Rain When questioned regarding the performance of the mare rider L Dittman explained his mount, which races in rearward position, raced flat throughout and was not suited by the slow tempo of the event. L Dittman explained in his opinion his mount races best when able to improve wider in the home straight, where in his view the mare seems to appreciate open racing room, which circumstances failed to permit. A post race veterinary examination of the mare revealed no abnormalities. Trainer Mr S Lee concurred with the comments made by L Dittman and explained whilst the First Rain has shown form first up, in hindsight the 1400m journey may have been too much of a task first up. Further trainer Mr S Lee said in his opinion the mare would derive fitness benefit from the run and would better suited over a further distance later in its campaign. Harvard Graduate When questioned regarding leading the event rider L Rolls stated there didn t seem to be any apparent early speed in the event and after his mount began abnormally well he elected to take a forward position, without having to place his mount under unnecessary pressure. L Rolls explained his mount was able to dictate terms in front and obtain favourable sectionals throughout, resulting in the gelding sustaining a strong finishing effort in its run to the line. Stewards accepted the explanation provided by rider L Rolls. Immortal Miss Missed the start. Lillooet Approaching and rounding the home turn raced wide and cover excessive ground. A post race veterinary examination of the mare revealed no abnormalities. When questioned both rider Ms T Harrison and trainer Mr S Phelps said that in hindsight the mare, which races in a rearward position, was not suited by the slow tempo of the event and the sit and sprint tactics adopted by the eventual winner. Refustress Began awkwardly. Victorveto Raced wide throughout. RACE 6: Queenstown Benchmark 55 Handicap 1400m: Central Witness Raced fiercely in the early stages. In the early part of the home straight was carried wider for some distance. Collins Creek Approaching and passing the 700m when inclined to pull had to be restrained when awkwardly placed close to heels. Miss Parkin Was withdrawn by order of the stewards at 3.11pm after the filly became fractious and made contact with its head on the above partition of the barriers. Stewards ordered that all monies placed on Miss Parkin be refunded in full and all successful wagers placed with bookmakers prior to 3.11pm be subject to the following deductions in the dollar on the face value of the ticket: 1 st ) Runway Ready less 10 cents win, 11 cents place 2 nd ) Pat Kash less 13 cents place 4

5 3 rd ) They Call Me Rose less 11 cents place Given the manner in which the filly stood in the barriers, prior to it becoming fractious and after the incident, trainer Mr D Kelly was advised that a warning would be placed on the racing record of the filly. Trainer Mr D Kelly stated that the filly would now be spelled. Pat Kash Missed the start (2L). Approaching and rounding the home turn was not afforded fully clear racing room and was unable to improve, until shortly after straightening. They Call Me Rose Raced wide throughout. RACE 7: Clarence Valley Wholesalers Class 1 Handicap 1215m: Bonnie Sare Approaching the first turn was restrained when momentarily crowded for a stride. Cosgrove Badly crowded on jumping. Between the 700m and 600m had to be continually steadied after improving onto heels. Near the 200m was hampered slightly and inconvenienced for short distance when awkwardly place close to heels. Near the 80m shifted ground and became unbalanced for a stride when being placed under pressure. Dagga Boy Bounded on jumping and shortly after had to be steadied when severely crowded. Diggler Approaching the first turn took charge of its rider for a short distance and had to be steadied when awkwardly placed close to heels. A post race veterinary examination of the gelding, which was 35.94L revealed it to be suffering from cardiac arrhythmia. Trainer Mr S Phelps advised that the gelding would now be retired from racing. Lady Enid Began awkwardly and shifted out abruptly. Madam Kate Began awkwardly. RACE 8: In Memory of Warwick Hall Class 2 Handicap 1720m: Arlington Heights Approaching and rounding the home turn was held up for clear running and unable to improve. Brilliant Jet Raced keenly in the early stages. Rounding the home turn was unable to improve when awkwardly placed close to heels. When questioned in relation to the geldings improved performance, in comparison to its most recent start at Grafton (19/05/2017), trainer Mr A Nunn explained the gelding, which overraced, in hindsight was too fresh leading into the event and today enjoyed a comfortable run in a handy position and was able to settle and sustain a strong finishing effort in its run to the line. Bringit Raced fiercely in the early stages. In the early part of the home straight was momentarily help up for clear running. Near the 200m was eased when unable to improve when not afforded a clear passage and was shifted inwards in search of clear running. Destinys General Rounding the home turn was unable to improve when awkwardly placed close to heels. 5

6 Johnny Feedback Pulled in the early and middles stages. Approaching and rounding the home turn was held up for clear running. Kay Bea s Lad Inside the final 100m was inclined to lay in under pressure. Rainbow River Overraced in the early stages. Near the 700m was steadied after improving onto heels. Approaching and rounding the home turn was held up for clear running. Near the 300m was checked and shifted out around heels when disappointed, after attempting to obtain a narrow run. Near the 200m was buffeted between runners when being ridden through a narrow passage. Thermal Unit Overraced in the early and middle stages. Raced wide without cover throughout. SWABS: Swab samples were taken from all winners and the following runners: Race 1: Stellar Power. Race 2: Denlago. Race 5: Harvard Graduate, Onslow Race 8: Arlington Heights, Defence Witness, Jonny Feedback & Brilliant Jet.
