Their Blue Ribbon award is posted on our club website ( in the Events tab. Twelve members came to the Summer BBQ on July 14 th at our house. Photos are posted on the website in the Events tab. It was a perfect sunny and mild day for sitting outside on the rear deck and under the pergola enjoying great food and conversation. The next calendar listed event is the Greater Rochester Triumph Touring Club UK Car Day on August 5 th in Webster. Entry deadline in August 1 st. Forms and info can be found at August 10 th through the 12 th JANE is hosting their annual event in Sturbridge, Massachusetts. Several members have attended this over the years and rave about the great time to be had. More info at Our second Slalom of the year will be held on August 25 th. Several new participants competed in Slalom #1 with gratifying times. Indeed we have 5 members who, at the time of this writing, are in the running for National trophies. Bruce Brownfield is 1 st in Class E ( 72 E-type), Jeff Berry and his XJ6 are 1 st in Class J with Paul Chappell just behind him in his 87 XJ6. Mike Havens is placing 2 nd in Class L with his 05 XKR and Nathan Lyman ( 16 F Type R) is in the hunt with a 3 rd place standing in Class R. Please wish them good luck and smooth driving. From personal experience the heavy pewter plate trophies are very nice to win. On September 15 th our long-running Annual Wine Tour will be held. This year we will add at least one Brewery to our Winery list to visit. In convoy we should have some good country roads to exercise our cats. Our second non-car event this year will be a visit to The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester on Saturday, October 6. Please add it to your must do list. Lastly, and definitely not the least, we want to thank George and Lee Lapinsky for all the hard work they ve exerted in publishing the Kitty Letter over the last several years. It has allowed members to share their own special Jaguar inspired stories and kept members abreast of the goings-on in the club. Ellie Hall (Debbie and Paul Chappell s daughter) from North Carolina will be taking the reins beginning with the September-October issue. Ellie has loved Jaguars since she was a youngster and will be reaching out to you to keep the Kitty Letter strong. Please help her with your input and stories. 4 The 2018 Eurocar Show by Paul Chappell 2018, like every year, is flying by and with it another Eurocar show has come and gone. June 17th turned out to be a "picture perfect " day and consequently the show field at the Lorenzo State park in Cazenovia was filled with a huge variety of European cars to view. Class # 7, the Jaguar class, was well represented with a variety of models, both old and new with 5 slips taken by JACNY members. Like last years show, the judging was an informal format with each exhibitor receiving a judging form and was asked to pick a favorite from each class. There were lots of door prizes so lots of happy winners walking away from the hospitality tent with their choice from the selection offered. At the end of the day, it was our own Bill & Janet Goodman that won the First Place award for class 7 with their 1954 XK 120 Roadster. This is a Jaguar that the Goodmans spent many years restoring to its original showroom condition. Most would agree that the real prize would be in the satisfaction of driving from Pittsford NY to the show and back in a car that can honestly be described as a " work of art". So, we all congratulate Bill & Janet and all our members in attendance that helped make the day so rewarding. Special thanks to the MG Car Club of Central NY for producing this show for us to enjoy. PS... the other members in attendance were: John Duncan with his 1970 E-Type OTS Rick Pettit with a 1955 XK140 MC OTS Jim & Michele Ball with their 1999 XJ8 Vanden Plas Paul & Debbie Chappell in a 1987 XJ6 Jaguar Association of Central New York Kitty Letter July/August

5 Report from the Greenwich Concours d Elegance June 2/3, 2018 by Ramon Ricker Our 1957 XK140 SE was invited to this year s Greenwich Concours d Elegance, so in the first week of June Judy and I drove to Greenwich, CT. It was 336 miles one way for us and we had a flat! I felt the car acting a little squirrely, but I attributed that to the bias tires. In Binghamton we got stuck in stop-and-go traffic and normally that would raise my blood pressure, but this time it was very fortunate for us. A trucker leaned out his window and told us we had a soft tire in the back. I exited immediately and pulled into a truck stop. Sure enough. It was way, way down. I didn t want to pull up the carpet to use our jack so we called AAA. They jacked the car up and I changed the wheel. New knowledge for me, wire wheel s spokes can pinch the inner tube if the inner rubber rim strip shifts. Anyway after an hour or so we were on our way again. At Greenwich there were actually two concours. Saturday was U.S. cars and Sunday was foreign. There was also a Bonham s auction going on. As usual most of the cars were trailered, but here several also had no legal license plates. They were unregistered museum pieces! The Jaguar SS was one of the featured Marques. There were 8 or 10 of them. I m sure I ll never see that again. There was also a very nice E-Type, a 120 and a 140 with a Ghia body. There were only three of those made. It s a car you may see in the back of your Jaguar book if it has a Special One-Off Bodies section. A photo is below. The weekend was a lot of fun for us. David Hobbs, famed British race car driver and TV commentator was there signing copies of his new book. I spotted him on his way someplace walking with a purpose, but as he approached our car he slowed, then stopped to give it a good look. He looked at me and said, Nice car. You should win. That made my day. And he was right. Our 140 was awarded British Best in Class. Here are some links below. Here s a link to the Greenwich Concours website. Here s a link to our car driving on the grounds to its spot. We re number 9 of 54 of the photos in this article. Here s a link to the results of the Bonham s auction. Great video that captures the excitement of this Concours. Our XK140 receives its award at 2:44. Jaguar XK140 with a Ghia body Jaguar Association of Central New York Kitty Letter July/August

7 Ferrari or Jag? Decisions, decisions by Bill Steger Back in 1971 I was a newly minted Naval Aviator on my way to becoming a Navy Fighter Pilot on my first assignment in San Diego. Back then it actually was like Top Gun where everyone was too full of testosterone. With the flight training behind me and I was on my way in what I planned to be my career. It was time to buy a car that fit the image. While in college I was really into sports cars and was a regular at the Watkins Glen Production Races so my first sports car was a 1959 Alfa Gulietta Spider that need a lot of body work. Next was a 60 something TR-4 which I sold when leaving for the Navy. In Pensacola, FL I bought a TR-4A IRS followed by a Triumph TC-500 motorcycle. When several of us were transferred to Kingsville TX for Advanced Jet training we trailered our bikes. Then came the problem of how to transport everything to my assignment San Diego. So, I sold the TR-4A and bought a VW Bus as an interim transport. The VW fit in with the California culture but not mine. What to buy next? I narrowed it down to 2 choices from a used car showroom a late 1950 Ferrari GT (probably a 275) for something like $6,500 or a very pretty 1969 pale primrose Jaguar E-Type coupe for $3,600, with less than 10,000 miles. Decisions, decisions. That was a lot of money back then and considering maintenance and that I fell in love with the E-Jags when they first came out, the decision was made and I was very happy. Of course considering current prices the Ferrari certainly trumped the Jag as an investment but back then I wasn t interested in investment. So 47 years later having put some 75,000 miles on my Jag, I have no regrets. Actually, it was always considered my baby and I never thought about selling it. It was my main driver until 1977 when I left the Navy followed by periods of storage, moves, and finally back to Rochester. It survived as one of my cherished possessions through marriage, kids, and job changes. The one sad point was an accident while on temporary duty in Jacksonville, Florida in I was hit on driver s side by an old couple who turned into me at an intersection. Fortunately there was a very good collision shop there that made the repairs. Ten years ago, after several years in storage I decided it was time to bring her back to life. I joined the CNY Jag Club to get recommendations of local mechanics and found Scott Riter who is now with Horsepower Motors in the Rochester area. An excellent and very talented mechanic. After an investment significantly more than the original purchase price I had the engine and all the mechanicals restored. She now purrs like a kitten! Although the body is in great shape as it has never seen snow, hence no rust, the rubber needs replacement and a couple pieces of chrome need replacing. That s the next investment. The plan is for this to be a winter project with my son but this plan has not happened for a couple years now. Oh well, driving it and making my annual trip to the Vintage Races at The Glen are annual highpoints. I have yet to make it to a CNY Jag Club event, mainly due to conflict with my other hobbies and because my wife is not excited about sports cars. Hopefully I ll finally get to meet everyone at The Glen the September. Jaguar is the featured marque and it will be a fun weekend! Jaguar Association of Central New York Kitty Letter July/August

8 2018 Syracuse Nationals by Vince Nicotra and George Lapinsky For those who couldn t make the Nationals this year, Vince Nicotra and I both attended and provide the following photos for your enjoyment.vince was the one who captured the image of the (only?) Jaguar there, a beautiful 1973 XJS with miles on the clock, for sale by owner for $ This was one of many cars for sale, with prices ranging from $5,000 to $65,000. Because of the injuries that I sustained in a car accident, I used my electric wheelchair to browse the fairgrounds. I thought that I had remembered everything when I left the house: tickets, camera, sunglasses, cap, coffee and doughnut. But by the end of the day, I found that I was sorely wrong. I got a wicked bad sunburn on my kneecaps. So, don t leave the house without your sunblock! LOL! Jaguar Association of Central New York Kitty Letter July/August

12 Syracuse Nationals, continued Clayton Concours by Bill Licker Judy and I attended the Clayton Concours D'elegance held on the grounds of the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton on June 30th. Admission included display or judged participation, lunch for 2, a terrific hour long boat ride in a classic wooden cruiser on the river, a reception following the award presentation and admission to the boat museum. We were a display only car but several beautiful cars including Jaguars were there. A newly restored early 60s red E type convertible owned and restored by Paula Petroske of Mostly British in Chaumont won the car most wanted to drive home award and an XK120 fixed head coupe also won a trophy. Two entrants from the European Motor Club of CNY won awards, including Best of Show. The weather was great and it was a lovely venue. We encourage all to consider putting it on your calendar for next year. Space is limited so early registration is advised. Jaguar Association of Central New York Kitty Letter July/August
