2 Vladimir Putin Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin is the second Russian president. He has been in office since 31 December 1999 when Boris Yeltsen resigned, to He has recently been re elected in what many say was a rigged election. From the years , he was the prime minister. Although foreign media has critisised him for being undemocratic, he has enjoyed very high popularity in Russia. He oversaw a period of ecomomic stability and growth. The economy grew for 9 staight years while he was in power and the GDP grew by 72% ppp.

3 Early Life Putin was born on October 7 th 1952 in Leningrad (now st. Petersburg). His parents were Vladimir Spiridonovich Putin ( ) and Maria Ivanovna Putina ( ). The ancestry of Putin is relatively unknown, but it is suggested that the putins are descended from the royal Tverskoy family. On 1 September 1960, he started at School No. 193 at Baskov Lane. In sixth class he started taking the sports sambo and judo. In his youth, Putin was eager to copy the intelligence officers played in the soviet movies by actors such as Vyacheslav Tikhonov and Georgiy Zhzhonov. Putin graduated from the International Law branch of the Law Department of the Leningrad State University in 1975, writing his final thesis on international law. While at university he became a member of the Communist Party, and remained a member until the party was dissolved in December He joined the KGB in 1975 after graduating from university and was stationed in East Germany. He resigned in 1990 during the second day of the KGB-supported putsch against Mikhail Gorbachev.

4 Early Political career In May 1990, Putin was appointed Mayor Sobchak's advisor on international affairs. On 28 June 1991, he was appointed head of the Committee for External Relations of the Saint Petersburg Mayor's Office, with a job to promote international relations and foreign investments. Putin remained head of the Committee for External Relations until In March 1994, Putin became first deputy head of the st. Petersburg city administration. From 1995 through June 1997, he led the Saint Petersburg branch of the progovernment Our Home Is Russia political party.

5 Presidency/Prime Ministry On 9 August 1999, Vladimir Putin was appointed one of three First Deputy Prime Ministers,. Later, that same day, Putin agreed to run for the presidency. On 16 August, the State Duma approved his appointment as Prime Minister with 233 votes in favour, making him Russia's fifth PM in fewer than eighteen months. On his appointment, few expected Putin, virtually unknown to the general public, to last any longer than his predecessors. However, he was president until 2008 when he became Prime Minister. During his first two terms, Putin became very popular with Russians although the west didn t like him. He pulled Russia out of an economic slump and the economy, industry, GDP and exports all grew.

On 4 March 2012 Putin won the 2012 Russian presidential elections in the first round, with 63.6 % of the vote.while extraordinary measures were taken to make the elections transparent, the vote was thought to be rigged. Putin was inaugurated in the Kremlin on 7 May Massive public protests in Moscow the day before saw thousands of protesters. It was first time that riot police met with powerful response of the people. At least 120 protesters were arrested in Moscow. The previous day, protests had resulted in 80 people being injured and 450 arrests. It seems that Putin has now lost his popularity.
