The competition was fierce as Coleman's white squad, down after the first two rotations, made a strong comeback in the final two to overtake Toups' blue squad, The UK pom squad and 10-time national champion cheerleaders also were on hand and performed to the delight of the fans. The cheerleading squad even gave the fans a sneak peek at the routine it will perform at the upcoming national championships. To top things off, the Anderson (Ind.) All-Stars entertained the crowd with their dance moves, while fan-favorite Percy Price offered an impersonation of Sisqo. What the night gave the fans was fun, prizes and a chance to meet the GymKats, who signed autographs for 30 minutes afterward. Academi-Kats... 8 SEC Dominates Yet Another Sport... In the inaugural NCAA Women s Gymnastics Championships in 1992, Florida gave the Southeastern Conference its only representative in the meet, finishing seventh. However, UF set a standard that the remaining conference teams have followed. Since the second meet in 1983, Florida represented the conference each year through Most importantly, the Gators took at least two other SEC teams along with them. Even though UF did not make it as a team in 2000, three conference teams competed at the NCAA meet. Not only have SEC teams gone to nationals, they have done quite well. The SEC has won eight national team titles and 49 individual titles. In 1998, the SEC had the top three finishers, becoming the only conference in history to do so. Overall, the SEC has won the NCAA eight times, with Georgia taking the title five times and Alabama claiming three. Though Kentucky has never competed in the NCAA Championships as a team, it does hold a couple of individual records. Kentucky is second in the NCAA in individual event champions in a single year with four and Jenny Hansen is third all-time in number of first-team All-America honors with 13. Hanson also is the only gymnast to ever win three all-around championships. The GymKats on the Web... The University of Kentucky's official athletics website, ukathletics.com, went through a major overhaul during the summer. 9 2001 University of Kentucky Gymnastics Season Review I n 2000, for the first time in nine years, the UK GymKats missed qualifying for NCAA regional competition. Heading into the 2001 season, the team was determined to not let that happen again. Many in collegiate athletics believe that facing the top teams in the country early and often only benefits a team by preparing it for the rigors of postseason action and making that team better, despite possible early season stumbles. The 2001 GymKats wasted no time in the first meet of the season, facing Southeastern Conference-rival LSU, a team that finished ninth at the 2000 NCAA Championships. And stumble this team did. UK got off to a good start in the home opener as Jennifer Simmons won the vault in her first meet back after sitting out most of the '99 season with a broken ankle, while Mindy Smith tallied a to claim the individual honors on beam. However, the GymKats soon found trouble, counting one fall on bars and two on beam to lose to the Tigers of LSU, The night was still promising as Simmons claimed second in the all-around with a and Julia Gore, the 2000 SEC Freshman of the Year, tallied a for third. The GymKats hit the road for their next SEC matchup, traveling to Auburn, Ala., to face another set of Tigers. It was a close battle throughout with UK's Smith The GymKats pose before action gets underway at the Arizona State quad meet. taking the beam and floor titles, while Gore finished first on vault and second in the allaround. The visitors looked destined for their first win of the season before last minute inquiries by AU gave the home team a narrow victory, With no rest for the weary, UK returned home to face No. 5 Michigan and 2000 U.S. Olympic Team Captain Elise Ray in the first meet of a three-meet home stand. The GymKats stayed close to the Wolverines through one rotation but could not hang on, dropping the meet UK again was led by stellar performances on beam by Smith, who claimed her third beam title in as many meets, and Nicole Allen, who established a career best on beam. Simmons again led the way on vault, while Jessie Lemp and Katie Toups gave solid performances on bars. The No. 25 GymKats welcomed No. 3 Georgia and George Washington to Memorial Coliseum for what would prove to be the turning point of the season for UK. Georgia entered the season coming off a third-place finish at the 2000 NCAA Championships and was primed to improve. However, after two rotations, the highly ranked Bulldogs had suffered three falls on beam and found themselves tied with UK. Getting a each from Smith, Lemp and Gore on beam, UK finally made the necessary corrections on the apparatus to count no falls for the first time. The season-high score of kept the GymKats close, but the Gym Dogs pulled away in the final rotation for the victory. With 9 We proved to a lot of people that we are an incredible team and they can't just write us off anymore. Sophomore Mindy Smith a from GW, UK also earned its first win and with newfound confidence would not count a lower total score the rest of the season. We were ecstatic after two rotations," Little said. "The team got a taste of what it feels like to be even with a strong team. They now have to learn how to maintain that competitive edge at all times." However, UK faced a daunting task, replacing all-arounder Gore. In the final rotation, she injured her knee during a tumbling pass on floor, an injury that would keep her out of the lineup the rest of the season. Freshman Aronda Primault moved into the all-around lineup and UK had its breakthrough performance against No. 22 Illinois, matching the school-record team score to drop the Fighting Illini, The GymKats claimed individual honors on each apparatus and the allaround. Simmons scored a to win vault, Toups tallied a to claim the bars title, Smith was tops on beam with a and Primault took first on floor with a and first in the all-around with a With her AA performance, Primault was named the SEC Gymnast of the Week. The beam finally became a blessing rather than a burden for the GymKats as they scored a , the fifth-highest beam total in school history, while they also proved their mettle on the mats with a score on floor, the third-best floor score in school history. Allen performed well on the night tallying a on beam and a on floor. Also contributing to the high floor total was Coleman and Simmons, who each matched Allen's score of "This was a huge emotional victory for us," Little said. "We've pushed these athletes, and they were frustrated. We knew

2001 University of Kentucky Gymnastics Season Review (con t) they were capable of this type of performance, and they showed it." With things moving in the right direction midway through the season, UK took its No. 23 national ranking to Colorado to face the No. 18 Denver Pioneers. Primault finished third in the all-around with a to pace the GymKats, while the team scored its second-best totals of the season on bars and vault. Julie Joy, another freshman contributor, led the way on bars, and Melanie Zaharias returned to her home state with a on vault. However, UK's , its second best of the season, was not enough to overcome UD's Coming off a loss can be a tough task for any team, but even more so when it must travel to another highly ranked opponent. For UK, that meant a trip to No. 2 We said last year that we didn't want another year like that. There was so much fight in this team. Junior Katie Toups Alabama. But the GymKats were anything but nervous. So confident were these athletes that they put together solid performances on bars and vault, led by Lemp's bar routine and Coleman's on vault. With a on bars and a on vault by UK, the GymKats and Tide were separated by only two-tenths of a point. In the third rotatation, Bama tallied some unfortunate deductions on beam as UK scored a on floor with the help of a from Joy, a from Coleman and a from Primault to take a point advantage. In front of more than 7,000 Alabama fans, the GymKats ended the evening on the apparatus that had given them much trouble early on, trouble they had begun to overcome. Their response was to score a school-record beam total of on the heels of a career-high each by Smith and Zaharias. However, the Tide completed competition on their best event, the floor exercise, tallying a to claim the victory, With a , Primault won her second allaround competition of the season. "That was the best performance by any team I've ever coached," Little said. "I'm so impressed with our performance. Moving to balance beam last, this team really held together and shined." UK seemed to be living by the notion of face the best and improve, but a trip to Gainesville to face Florida, Iowa State and Ball State slowed the progress a bit. The beam again was the downfall for the GymKats as they were forced to count three falls for a , the lowest beam score of the season. However, they rallied to score a on the floor exercise in the next rotation, led by Primault's 9.900, and a on vault, paced by Coleman's first-place 9.825, to total , finishing just ahead of Ball State for third place. Memorial Coliseum greeted UK a week later for its last home meet of the season, and the GymKats did not disappoint the home crowd. Saying goodbye to seniors Coleman and Susan Buffington, the GymKats scored a , the secondhighest score in school history to top Bowling Green, Central Michigan and Pittsburgh, and regain their balance for the upcoming postseason. The GymKats scored or better in three events, Junior Nicole Allen was an integral part of the bar, beam and floor lineups for the GymKats. while three gymnasts tallied a on four occasions to lead UK to the victory. Primault led the way with a career-high to win the allaround honors, while Joy scored a careerhigh to finish fourth in just her second AA performance of the season. Joy, Smith and Primault each scored a career-high on floor to lead the team to a , the fourthbest floor total in school history. On vault, Primault tallied a 9.900, Coleman added a in her last home meet as a GymKat and Simmons chipped in a to help UK to a , while the team achieved a on bars with the help of a from Joy and a each from Lemp and Primault. To close out the regular season, UK traveled to Tempe, Ariz., for its toughest meet of the season against three top-12 teams. In a meet that saw No. 8 Arizona State and No. 7 Nebraska battle for first the entire evening, the GymKats overcame the loss of Allen to an injury in warm-ups and put together their strongest vault performance of the year to overtake No. 12 Iowa, , for third place. In the third rotation of the evening, UK scored a season low on floor, an event that had been good for the GymKats the previous few weeks, to slip to fourth place. However, Simmons hit her vault to score a to lead the team past the Hawkeyes. With the strong finish to the regular season, UK increased its regional qualifying score to for sixth place in the Central Region. With 36 spots available in the first round of NCAA competition and 10

2001 University of Kentucky Gymnastics Season Review (con t) six regions in the country, on average six teams from each region qualify for NCAAs. However, the actual number of teams that qualify from each region is based on this formula: the number of teams ranked in the top 18 plus the next three. Only two teams in the Central Region were ranked in the top 18, so only five teams could qualify. Therefore, being sixth in the region was not enough for UK, and the GymKats were again faced with the prospect of ending the season at the SEC Championships. Heading to Birmingham, Ala., they needed a to surpass Michigan State for that last qualifying spot. In front of a crowd of more than 5,000 fans cheering mostly for Alabama and Georgia, the GymKats finished fifth among the six league schools, but more importantly, they scored a At SECs, UK opened up one of its most important meets in recent history on bars and responded with a solid effort behind a from Toups. The GymKats moved on to the beam where Smith again led the team, this time to a score of , with a 9.850, while Simmons added a In the third rotation on floor, they stepped it up to a new level, scoring a , the second-best floor total in school history. Smith, Joy and Primault each tallied a while Coleman scored a (a career high) and Simmons scored a Rounding out the scoring was the team's secondbest effort of the season on vault, a , headed up by a from Coleman and a from Joy, Toups and Zaharias. Needing a to surpass MSU, their total of not only overtook the Spartans for fifth in the region but also Junior Jessie Lemp led the 2001 GymKats on the uneven bars with a average. made it mathematically impossible for MSU to move back ahead of UK, returning the team to NCAA competition. The GymKats traveled back to Tuscaloosa, the site of their near upset of the Crimson Tide earlier in the season, facing No. 4 Alabama, No. 9 Arizona State, No. 16 Minnesota, No. 20 Kent State and No. 21 Ohio State at regionals. Again, UK gave a solid performance, scoring a to finish fourth, just eight-tenths of a point away from second place and a spot at nationals. Before the competition even started, however, concern arose about whether this team would be able to overcome another obstacle - the loss of Coleman. Coleman had been an important member of the UK vault and floor lineups and had been performing extremely well leading up to the meet, but a case of whiplash suffered during a warm-up vault threatened to end her career early and hinder the GymKats chances. Showing the will and desire this team had shown all season long, Coleman regrouped and competed in both events. Along with Joy, she scored a that, added to the from Smith and Primault, pushed the GymKats past Ohio State and into fourth place heading into the final rotation on vault. There, Coleman scored a to go along with Simmons' and Zaharias' to give UK the fourth-place finish. Coleman's tied Simmons for fifth place. In the all-around competition, Primault completed a stellar freshman season with a to finish in seventh place, missing an at-large berth to nationals by a tenth of a point. Simmons completed her comeback season with a for ninth We got a taste of what it is like to be a threat to some of those powerhouse schools. Junior Nicole Allen place. Adding to the individual honors was Smith, whose on beam, her 16th consecutive score of or better, tied her for sixth in the region. "Finishing only eight-tenths of a point from qualifying for nationals is tremendous progress," Little said. "This was a very successful season, and we are on the verge of greater things." In a season that began with expectations of reaching regional competition once again, these GymKats started slowly but gelled at the right time and came together as the unit they knew they could be. They wound up the season with the 13th-best score in NCAA regional competition and finished ranked 16th after nationals. They matched the best team total in school history once and tied or surpassed the second-best team total in school history three times. Eight of nine returning GymKats who saw action this season recorded a career best on at least one apparatus, with three gaining career highs on at least two. And on 13 occasions, these GymKats scored an event or overall total that ranks in the top six all time at UK. "These athletes gained tremendous ground with what they accomplished this year," Little said. "I really have to commend them for going from a No. 40 ranking at the end of last season to 13th this year. We got ourselves back up to the point where it will help recruiting and will help put us back where we feel we rightfully belong, in the top 10 in the country. They did what they needed to do to put themselves back in a position where they gained respect and national attention." 11

2001 Senior Salute Susan Buffington and Beth Coleman Seniors Beth Coleman and Susan Buffington took center stage on Friday, March 9, for the University of Kentucky gymnastics team's senior night festivities as they said goodbye to the home crowd. The GymKats faced Bowling Green, Central Michigan and Pittsburgh in the final home meet of the 2001 season. These two young women who have made a solid impact on the UK program have each taken different, yet equally important paths to get to this special day, one on the mats and one on the sidelines. Coleman came to the Bluegrass from the Chicago area in Her choice of Kentucky was not a difficult one as she considered a number of factors. Other schools had one or another of the characteristics she was looking for in a college, but only Kentucky provided her with all the ingredients for which she was searching. For Buffington, a Jonesboro, Ga., native, UK was the only school she really considered. She was friends with UK gymnast Shawnte Hall, who told Buffington about the program. One visit was all it took for her to decide on UK. "Kentucky was the only school I visited," Buffington said. "When I got here, I just knew this was the place for me." And it has been a good place for them both. Coleman got into gymnastics at the age of six, when she started taking classes to follow in her older sister's footsteps, but that was not where she started. "My first classes were in ballet," Coleman said. "But I was kicked out of Susan Buffington and Beth Coleman greeted the home crowd for the last time on March 9. ballet because all I wanted to do were cartwheels." She started competing at the age of nine but stopped for a year at 11. After picking it back up Coleman took it more Beth Coleman seriously and came to the realization that this could be the sport for her. As a freshman at UK, Coleman had a solid season entering the all-around lineup at the Nebraska Invitational, while recording a career-high on the vault against Florida. In 1999, she had to fight off an injury in preseason and, after missing much of the season, went on to establish career-highs on the floor, bars and allaround. After competing in the first seven meets of 2000, Coleman sat out the remainder of the season with a case of mononucleosis. However, in her senior season, she has shined. Competing for the GymKats on vault and floor, Coleman has positioned herself second on the team in both events. She has recorded three consecutive scores of or better on the vault and tallied a careerhigh on the floor against Illinois in February. "This has been a great experience," Coleman said. "When I was young I never really had any intentions of going to college. I just wanted to compete. When I was about 15 I realized I could compete well, and that opened the door for what I have done the last four years. I am very happy with my choice and can look back at my time here with no regrets." "Beth has seen adversity," assistant coach Mo Muhammad said, "and despite that has shown that she can be a motivator and a team leader in the good times and the bad. She has been an integral part of this program for four years." Buffington, on the other hand, has not competed nearly as much as Coleman. As a matter of fact, her UK career consisted of exactly two meets. She did not have the best start since she had four surgeries in high school alone. As a freshman she had an ankle injury, and then by the time she graduated, she had had three surgeries on her left knee. As an incoming freshman, Buffington was ready to begin what she and the coaches thought would be a wonderful collegiate career, but during her physical Susan Buffington examination, another tear in the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee was detected, requiring another operation. After more rehab, she was again ready to perform, but after two meets her knee just was not as strong as it should be and the decision was made to end her competitive career. "In the back of my mind, I knew I probably couldn't continue," Buffington said, "but the coaches were the ones who convinced me that I should stop competing. They said that it was more important for me to be able to walk when I am 25 rather than continue to compete." Instead of competing, she has served as the team's manager. Her duties include handling music for the GymKats' floor routines, organizing equipment for home and away meets, and videotaping of all meets. "It means so much to me that I can still be a part of this program," Buffington said. "I worked hard my whole life to be a part of a college team, and even though I can't 12

2001 Senior Salute Susan Buffington and Beth Coleman (con t) physically compete, I still feel like I'm a member of the team." "Susan brings so much to our program," Coach Leah Little said. "She suffered a career-ending knee injury but wanted to stay with the program. She helps out in all aspects of the program and is such a positive person to be around day-in and day-out." Coach Mo added, "What would we do without her? A day without Buff is like a day without sunshine." Both gymnasts give credit to great coaching and wonderful teammates in helping them make it to this day. It has been a rough road at times, but they are stronger because of their experiences. "One thing I have learned while at UK is to go out and do my best no matter what happens," Coleman said. "It is important to have a team like we have to be behind you and help you through those tough times." Added Buffington, "It has been hard for me to not get to compete, but it is important to not give up no matter what you try to do, and it is okay to rely on others. This team has really helped me through it all. Most importantly, you need to be happy in whatever you do." Beth Coleman came to Kentucky from the Chicago area and has become one of the team s leaders in and out of the gym. Jan. 12, 2001 UK , LSU The University of Kentucky gymnastics team fell to the No. 8 Louisiana State Tigers in its season opener, , on Friday, Jan. 12. Kentucky opened up competition on the vault, an event that has a different look for the 2001 season. Until last year, gymnasts were allotted two opportunities and were awarded the higher average of the two judges' scores. This season, each gymnast has only one opportunity, making each trip down the track very important. The GymKats posted a strong , led by junior Jennifer Simmons with a Simmons made her return after sitting out the 2000 season with an ankle injury and her score was good enough to claim individual honors in the event. The Tigers posted a on the vault, led by Adrienne Couret's In the second rotation, the GymKats hit the uneven bars, posting a after being forced to count a fall. Junior Jessie Lemp and sophomore Julia Gore led UK with a each, which tied them for fourth on the event. Junior Nicole Allen also had a strong showing, notching a career high on the event. LSU had a strong bar team, posting a , including a firstplace performance by Beth Boudreaux. The Kats struggled in the decisive third rotation, counting two falls on the balance beam. The beam once again proved lucky for sophomore Mindy Smith, who has yet to count a fall in a collegiate meet on the event. Smith posted a career-high to lead her team and claim the individual honor. While the beam proved to be a foe for the Kats, the Tigers found their rhythm, scoring their highest event total of the evening with a The Kats fought hard to make up lost ground in the final rotation, where they posted a on floor to LSU's on the same event. Once again, Smith came up big for UK, notching a for a second-place finish overall. Allen and Gore also contributed strong performances with a pair of 9.750s. Two UK freshmen saw action for the first time as Wildcats as Julie Joy competed on vault, bars and floor exercise, and Aronda Primault showed her skills on the vault, balance beam and floor exercise. The Kats took second and third place in the all-around as Simmons notched a for second and Gore posted a for third. LSU's Nikki Arnstad had a solid performance to claim the individual all-around title. "For our first meet, we did some good things," Coach Leah Little said. "I'm disappointed, because we were very prepared, but we gave it away on the beam. Our goal is to come out and do well, but we had to count two falls on beam.
