Severso, associate professor of social welfare, was forced to cacel her 7:35 a.m. Huma Sexuality course at 330 Strog because the teachig equipmet had bee stole. It was ot the welcome back from sprig break I was expectig, Severso said. Over sprig break, three Sharp Data projectors ad various supplemetary equipmet were stole from rooms 330 ad 334 Strog Hall. The equipmet, estimated to be worth $11,600 accordig to police reports, beloged to the Istructioal Developmet ad Support Departmet. Some of the professors who teach i those rooms were forced to alter their lesso plas. Scott Wier, Atlata juior, has a commuicatios class that meets at 330 Strog Hall. I its ew digs o the fourth floor i the Kasas Uio, the KU Ifo walk-up booth is back i the busiess of aswerig questios after closig last December. The booth opeed Moday. KU Ifo program director Curtis Marsh said it was importat that the booth s ew locatio be i a gatherig place where studets, faculty ad staff meet. Thus, the Uio seemed to be the ideal fit. The KU Ifo walk-up booth was previously located i Aschutz Library, where the booth was actually a desk that doubled as the Aschutz referece desk. The KU Ifo Web site ad phoe umber were operatioal durig that time, although a perso aswerig the phoe was replaced by a recorded message. The actual huma elemet was abset. A Uiversity committee made up of Uiversity departmets ad oe studet decided what the ew model for KU Ifo should be ad where it would be located. She said those two helped to create a broad iformatio foudatio. They also fud KU Ifo. Eodice said the three facets of KU Ifo are the walk-up booth, Web site ad phoe umber. I existece for 36 years, KU Ifo was iitially implemeted as a rumor cotrol i 1970 by Uiversity admiistratio to squelch rumors that swirled about the campus as it faced costat studet protests. The ew employees uderwet six to eight hours of traiig to hadle the variety of questios, which primarily ceter o KU, yet ca stray to queries such as Chacellor Hemeway s height ad weight. Poised to be a service that provides to studets, faculty, staff, alumi or ayoe who has a questio about the Uiversity of Kasas, KU Ifo should help with the KU experiece, Marsh said. So far, it seems to be workig. Kate Bedfeldt, Leawood freshma, stopped by the booth to ask about major fairs. I saw there was KU Ifo right there, so I might as well stop ad see, she said. Bedfeldt, who is has ot decided o a major, was disappoited to fid that there were o career fairs goig o i the Uio. However, she was pleased with the service she received from KU Ifo. Capitol Hill police have referred a scuffle betwee oe of their officers ad McKiey to the U.S. Attorey s Office i Washigto. WASHINGTON House Republicas, reactig to the cofrotatio last week betwee Rep. Cythia McKiey ad a Capitol Police officer she is accused of hittig, pressed for a resolutio Tuesday to commed the police force for its professioalism. Democratic leaders did ot defed McKiey or her charge of racial profilig. I do t thik ay of it justifies hittig a police officer, said House Democratic Leader Nacy Pelosi of Califoria. U.S. Rep. Stey Hoyer of Marylad, the No. 2 Democrat i the House, said all lawmakers, staff members ad visitors i the buildig have a resposibility to obey Capitol Police. I thik we all should cooperate fully, he said. U.S. Rep. Mel Watt (D-North Carolia) chairma of the Cogressioal Black Caucus, had o commet, a spokesma said. As a federal prosecutor cosidered whether to press assault or other charges agaist McKiey, Republicas were itroducig their resolutio. I do t thik it s fair to attack the Capitol Police ad I thik it s time that we show our support for them, said U.S. Rep. Patrick McHery (R-North Carolia) a sposor of the measure. Igorig a police officer s order to stop, or hittig oe, is ever OK, McHery said. McKiey is alleged to have hit a uiformed police officer who did ot recogize her ad asked her to stop o her way ito a House office buildig. McKiey says she took actio i self defese after the officer iappropriately touched her. A spokesma for the cogresswoma did ot respod Tuesday to a request for commet. The six-term Georgia Democrat says the issue is ot about whether to obey a police officer s order, whether she hit him or the fact that she was ot wearig the lapel pi that idetifies members of Cogress. She ad her lawyers have said that a series of cofrotatios betwee McKiey ad U.S. Capitol ad White House law eforcemet officers who do t recogize her poits to a patter. The issue is racial profilig, McKiey, who is black, told CNN Moday. The resolutio beig itroduced Tuesday came as McKiey awaited U.S. Attorey Keeth L. Waistei s decisio o whether to press ay crimial charges agaist her. The measure expected to be itroduced late Tuesday, cosposored by U.S. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Florida) would ot specifically metio McKiey or the cofrotatio, McHery said. Istead, sposors said, it would commed the Capitol Police for their professioalism ad recogize the challege of protectig the vast Capitol campus from terrorism ad other threats while keepig it ope to tourists. Every day they exhibit hoor, courtesy ad professioalism, Diaz-Balart said i a statemet. McKiey says that has ot bee her experiece. She says Capitol Police officers have a log history of failig to recogize her ad askig for idetificatio a patter she says is racist ad i ay case highlights a security problem i oe of the most well-guarded buildigs i the coutry. Republicas suggest the icidet says somethig egative about the Democrats. A spokesma for House Speaker Deis Hastert (R-Illiois) said that a Democratic lawmaker hittig a officer does ot support the miority party s claim of a commitmet to security. Pelosi last week called that argumet pathetic. She added that she would ot make a big deal of what she termed a mistake by a officer. The lack of Democratic support for McKiey is otable. 5 Should the Studet Activity Fee portio of the Studet Seate Rules ad Regulatios be ameded as follows? Earlier this semester the Athletics Departmet gave a committee that was reviewig studet fees two proposals to icrease the wome s ad o-reveue sports fee. The Multicultural Affairs committee has bee workig o this iitiative all semester as a way to promote multicultural educatio o campus. If the referedum is passed i ext week s Studet Seate electios it would add about $70,000 to the Seate budget. Craig said the moey from the fee icrease would be used to fud multicultural educatio evets. It would allow ay orgaizatio that puts o a evet that falls uder the multicultural defiitio to receive more fudig after goig through Seate for geeral fudig. Nola T. Joes, Pittsburg juior ad Seate commuicatios director, said that this particular referedum was the most misleadig item o the ballot ad would ot promote a positive multicultural educatio at the Uiversity. This referedum is a poorly writte ad dishoest push to help a sectio of studet groups at the expese of the whole body of orgaizatios, Joes said. Coalitios do t wat to talk Jim Marchioy, associate athletics director, said the fee icrease was eeded so the Athletics Departmet could better support the teams that are t makig their ow moey. Of the $20 icrease, $15 would be used to build a boathouse for the wome s rowig team, which it does ot have. He said that the project would cost betwee $2 millio ad $3 millio, so the Athletics Departmet would have to raise whatever amout of moey the fee did t cover. He said that if it failed to raise that extra amout, the Athletics Departmet had made a commitmet to the Seate that it would refud $15 of the fee to each studet. Marchioy said he thought studets would be willig to support the fee because they would wat to be able to see competitive wome s ad o-reveue sports teams. He said that the fee was eeded to keep the Uiversity up-todate o the Title IX code that says all equipmet, scholarships ad geeral fuds for me s ad wome s sports teams must be equal. If the Uiversity fails to meet that requiremet, the federal govermet ca withhold fuds are payig were for thigs that studets should t eve be ivolved with. He used the Campus Evirometal Improvemet fee as a example, ad said that trustig that moey to studet politicias who do t kow about groudskeepig did t seem right. This particular issue has brought up may questios ad has people woderig if somethig like this could actually hurt Studet Seate i the log ru. Stephaie Craig, Edmod, Okla., seior ad holdover seator for Delta Force, said that if this referedum passed, it would be devastatig to may importat resources o campus. She said she thought the people who wrote the iitiative were tryig to take a stad agaist how much studets pay at the Uiversity, but that the services they were cuttig were too importat. I thik studets eed to vote o o that ad preserve what studets have here at KU, Craig said. Chaay said he did t expect the about the damage this fee does for fear of soudig agaist multiculturalism but to oppose this referedum is to support everyoe s cultures istead of Multicultural Affairs Committee s had-picked few. Joes said that this iitiative was sayig that multicultural evets were more importat tha other studet evets. He said it would damage the relatioship amog studet groups by fosterig argumets about whether or ot the evet falls uder the guidelies of beig multicultural. Craig said the small icrease the iitiative was askig for was ot a big trade-off for what the Uiversity would be gaiig from better multicultural evets. She said that by givig those orgaizatios more moey the group would be able to sped less time fud raisig ad more time advertisig ad makig the evet eve better. Natha Ladd, Effigham seior ad juior/seior CLAS seator, said that he did ot support the fee icrease. He said that because the Athletics Departmet was a corporatio, it was able to raise large sums of moey through such thigs as edorsemets without studet support. O the widely used Web site Craigslist.org, some ladlords ad apartmet dwellers lookig for roommates are offerig to accept sex i lieu of ret. They have to be attractive. I do t let just aybody come ito my house, said Mike, a ma who aswered the phoe at the New York City listig but declied to give his last ame ad refused to say whether he has, i fact, collected the ret uder the sheets. The offerig of shelter for sex is older tha, well, real estate itself. But the olie come-os are fraker tha aythig you might see i the ewspaper classifieds, because they are ot edited by Craigslist, ad perhaps also because the aoymity of the Iteret ofte causes people to shed their ihibitios. Tradig housig for sex is a form of prostitutio. But the police are t kickig dow doors. Paul J. Browe, a deputy police commissioer i New York, said ivestigators have foud that the Craigslist ads are frequetly little more tha a form of voyeurism that did t result i a actual exchage of sex for ret. Craigslist provides mostly free classifieds for apartmets, used cars ad just about everythig else i more tha 200 cities i 35 coutries. I usually ret the room for 600, but if you are really ticklish ad willig to trade beig tickled for the extra ret the we have a deal, writes a gay ma offerig a $350-a-moth room i the Sa Fracisco Bay area. A ad for a towhouse ear Bradeto, Fla., seeks a female that likes to be ude. Nothig more expected. It is uclear how much success people have had with their ret-for-sex ads. Oe ma said he became frieds with a bisexual ma who aswered his ad but did ot ed up takig the room. The same user said a ma visitig from Russia aswered his ad ad they shared dier ad a bottle of wie, but that was it. This is oly a silly sidelie adveture of mie, the ma, who would ot give his ame, wrote i a . I feel a little embarrassed about it. The Associated Press ed more tha two-doze other people who placed ads, but most declied to be iterviewed. Jim Buckmaster, chief executive of Sa Fracisco-based Craigslist, said the compay forbids ads that break the law, but his staff of 19 could ot possibly police all postigs. Craigslist istead relies o users to flag ads they fid offesive. If eough people agree, the ad is removed. Tes of millios of users are a much more powerful force i examiig the more tha 8 millio classified ads per moth tha ay staff could be, Buckmaster said. Mike, who offered the room i New York, said his ads are frequetly flagged ad removed, resultig i a cat-ad-mouse game i which he puts them back up. Teats rights groups have accused Craigslist of skirtig fair housig requiremets. I February, a group called the Chicago Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Uder Law sued the Web site for publishig housig ads that excluded people based o their race, religio ad sex. But legal experts say Craigslist is shielded by a 1996 federal law that protects olie service providers that merely pass alog uedited iformatio provided by someoe else. Ad i most states, prostitutio laws apply oly if the ads are followed by s, phoe coversatios or other acts that advace the propositio. The mere postig itself is absolutely ot illegal, said Athoy Lowestei, a defese lawyer i Sa Fracisco, uless the guy who posts it or the perso who aswers it does somethig that makes it a little closer to happeig. t Natioal Couric may leave NBC for CBS By David Bauder The Associated Press NEW YORK Katie Couric may mark her 15th aiversary as Today show achor this week by makig the decisio to leave. I have leared the most, however, from the atmosphere that is prevalet i a college studet s life: Parties, protests, picics ad people. I must admit that some subjects are probably best taught i a classroom, such as math, but there is simply more to be leared tha ca be taught i such a settig. What is leared i the classroom is the kowledge ecessary to make a livig i the real world. What is leared outside of the classroom is the awareess ecessary to make a world that is really alive. The research project uses the Daveport s vieyard as its testig area. The Daveports are excited about the possibility of ew wies. Despite pitchig a o-hitter, juior pitcher Kassie Humphreys was tagged with the 2-0 loss to Nebraska Tuesday afteroo at Arrocha Ballpark. The Jayhawks had their chace to give Humphreys the wi i the sixth ad seveth iigs but were uable to coect, leavig four ruers straded o base i the fial two iigs. Our pitchig is ot the issue right ow, Kasas coach Tracy Buge said. We re just ot scorig rus for them, we re ot makig aythig easy. Kasas (18-18, 1-4 Big 12 Coferece) had ruers o first ad secod base to lead off the bottom of the sixth iig, after a sigle by seior outfield Heather Staley. She moved to secod base after a Nebraska error put seior outfielder Nettie Fierros o first. Nebraska pitcher Ashley DeBuhr the recorded two of her 11 strikeouts, walked seior ifielder Jessica Moppi ad struck out freshma ifielder Val Chapple to ed the iig. We were i the sixth iig, right where we wated to be, Buge said. I wat my kids swigig the bat ad those people, i particular, swigig the bat. For whatever reaso, we did t get it doe today. Nebraska scored its two rus off a passed ball by freshma catcher Erika Simigto i the secod iig ad a wild pitch by Humphreys i the seveth. The ruers reached base via a hit-by-pitch ad a error, respectively. The Jayhawks lack of offese spoiled aother strog outig by Humphreys, who has struck out at least 10 batters i three games this seaso. I her past 17 iigs o the moud, Humphreys has allowed oly oe hit, which came agaist Oklahoma State last weeked. I feel good out there, Humphreys said. I still thik I gave up a couple pass balls, so I m ot sayig I m doig a fabulous job, either. Kasas will travel to Fayetteville, Ark., to take o the Arkasas Razorbacks i a doubleheader Wedesday afteroo. Buge said the chace to get back o the field less tha 24 hours after the loss to Nebraska helped her team. The best thig i the world is to get back o the field, obody wats to go back to practice, Buge said. The thig about this group is they cotiue to hadle adversity i a positive way. Softball Notes: The loss marked Kasas eighth loss to a raked oppoet this seaso. The team has two victories agaist raked teams Florida ad Nebraska earlier i the seaso. Staley tied her seaso high with two hits agaist the Corhuskers. It marked the fourth time she has recorded two hits i a game this seaso. Additioally, sophomore secod basema Rye Price retured last weeked agaist Missouri. Although Price said he aggravated his ijured wrist swigig at a pitch Suday, he said he would be fie by toight. The returig players should give coach Ritch Price more to work with, but what his team has doe without big starters like Baty ad Price holds water o its ow, The Jayhawks are ow raked 24th i the atio by Baseball America. To play five weeks without two of your best six offesive players, I thik is a real complimet to the job everyoe s doe fillig i util we could put all of our pieces back together, Price said. Now with all of his pieces at had, Price has to put the puzzle together. Outfielders Brock Simpso ad Kyle Murphy have served as the team s mai stadis durig the absece of Baty, who was forced to the sidelies after laceratig his kidey ad splee o Feb. 25 agaist Lipscomb. Although Murphy s defesive talet filled the opeig perfectly i ceter field, Baty s absece left the lieup without a leadoff hitter. Murphy struggled at the plate ad could ot fill that spot. He s struggled with the bat big time, Price said. Nobody works harder tha he does ad he s our best defesive player. Price juggled the lieup ad tapped Simpso to be his leadoff ma. Simpso came through, postig a.300 average. Price said he may still Radall Saders/KANSAN start i right field o Wedesday, ad Baty would be used as the desigated hitter. As far as me, I just have to show up everyday, look at the lieup card ad see if I m i there or ot, Simpso said. If I m i there the I ll do what I ca to help the team. If I m ot I ll just wait for my chace. If that stads, seior Gus Miler would likely play ceter ad sophomore Joh Allma would stay i left. Miler will likely move back to right ad will be replaced with Baty i ceterfield as time goes by. As log as I m i the lieup, I do t care, Miler said. If I ve got to pitch, the I ve got to pitch, I guess. As far as adjustig for Price s retur, coach Price said that By Alissa Bauer abauer@kasa.com Last week, the Jayhawks gave sophomore outfielder Joh Allma backig to his claim that his was the best team i the Suflower State. Ad eve though his coach could ot have bee less thrilled about the boastig comig from his players after their 8-2 victory agaist Wichita State, coach Ritch Price let a slight smile creep across his face as he cotiued to talk. He kows this rivalry is chagig, ad his Jayhawks are makig progress toward the top. He meat it i the right maer, Price said of Allma. That might be the oly thig that kid has ever said that was t true i his life, Price said. Whether he ll admit his excitemet for the match-up or ot, Baty did say at least 60 of his family members would be at Eck Stadium to see his comeback. Edited by Matt Wilso t but em over Fial Four lousy Matt Wilso mwilso@kasa.com I heard a coversatio betwee two Uiversity of Kasas studets o the way to class Tuesday that summed up my thoughts o the 2006 Fial Four. Tall guy: Did you watch the atioal champioship game last ight? Short guy: No, ot really. Did you? Tall guy: I watched, like, the first half. It was pretty borig. Usually the Fial Four draws great iterest from every college basketball fa i the coutry. The touramet was great leadig up to last weeked, but the fial match-ups, begiig o Saturday, did ot provide ay excitemet whatsoever ad sucked the life out of those watchig. Florida versus George Maso had some pre-game appeal because of the Patriots Ciderella status ad the cotiuatio of Gator sophomore forward Joakim Noah s three-week comig-out party. The game itself, however, was less tha stellar. Florida s easy victory did t give fas hopig for a George Maso title a chace to cheer at ay poit i the game. The loudest perso i the RCA Dome was Noah, who screams at the top of his lugs every time he gets a reboud, as if it s the biggest play i the history of college basketball. I Saturday s ightcap, UCLA played LSU i a game that was eve worse tha the first. Not oly was it a blowout, it was a low-scorig blowout. UCLA further cemeted its title as America s Most Borig, playig a slow game that held its oppoet to 45 poits for the secod cosecutive game. LSU looked like it ever got out of bed, much less off the bus. Ballyhooed big-ma ad sophomore Gle Big Baby Davis validated his ifatile ickame, ad the Tigers ever got closer tha 14 poits to the Bruis i the secod half. Those two disasters cospired to set up the worst title game I have ever witessed. It was so bad, i fact, that I foud myself watchig the New York Yakees build a 13-1 lead agaist the Oaklad Athletics rather tha the secod half of the game. see TOURNAMENT o page 6B

12 4B The Uiversity Daily Kasa sports t baseball Hawks look for supremacy By Shaw Shroyer sshroyer@kasa.com kasa sportswriter Whe sophomore outfielder Joh Allma said it, some reporters laughed it off. Did he seriously thik Kasas was the best baseball school i the state? But, i reality, was it ay more outrageous tha declarig Wichita State the best basketball school i Kasas because it wet deeper ito this year s NCAA Basketball Touramet? At least i baseball, the two schools get to settle the debate o the field. Today, Kasas has the chace to claim the title as perhaps the top baseball program i the state, but Allma did t offer the Shockers ay more bulleti board material. I thik Wichita is a great team ad, othig agaist them, I just believe i what we re doig here, Allma said. I thik that we re a great team ad we re goig to go i tomorrow ad play a good ball game. It s hard to blame Allma for gettig so excited after beatig Wichita State last week. Kasas is i positio to sweep the seaso series from Wichita State for the first time sice Bobby Radall was Kasas head coach at the time ad the Jayhawks have split every seaso series with the Shockers sice Ritch Price took over i Wichita State also leads the all-time series agaist Kasas, Though it will take Kasas years to catch up i that regard, there s o deyig how big a sweep of Wichita State this year would be to Kasas. We wat to be the best program i the state ad i order to do that, you ve got to be better tha Wichita State, Price said. Kasas has all the mometum comig ito the game toight. The Jayhawks have wo four of their past five games, while the Shockers have lost six of their past eight games. If Matt Baty s goig to be back i the lieup, we re all goig to be fired up, Allma said. With the NCAA regioals scheduled to begi i Jue, the schools also may be compared accordig to their postseaso success. Whe asked to predict which team would be better i that respect by seaso s ed, Allma held back. Right ow we re takig it oe game at a time, so we re ot goig to look that far ahead, Allma said. Edited by Matt Wilso t club sports Wome s lacrosse has divisio title potetial By Alex Rose arose@kasa.com kasa sportswriter The KU wome s lacrosse team rebouded from a 15-5 loss ad defeated Truma State, 10-7, i the secod game of the afteroo o Saturday. The loss came agaist defedig league champio Lidewood Uiversity. The Jayhawks completed a busy weeked by returig home o Suday to take o divisio rival Nebraska. Team captai ad leadig scorer Lisa Alle led the Jayhawks o offese. Alle, a Highlads Rach, Colo., ative, reached a persoal milestoe i the game agaist Nebraska by scorig the 100th goal of her collegiate career. She became the secod Jayhawk to reach this mark ad she s oly a sophomore. The KU record for goals i a seaso is 124. The Jayhawks used six firsthalf goals to ear a covicig 10-2 victory, avegig last year s loss to the Corhuskers, which kept the Jayhawks out of postseaso play. The weeked s competitio improved the team s record to 14-4 with oly three games left to play i the regular seaso. The Jayhawks coclude their regular seaso play with three games ext weeked: the Uiversity of Chicago ad the Uiversity of Iowa o the road ad Oklahoma State i Lawrece. The team has ejoyed the most successful seaso i the history of the program, ad the prospects for the future are beamig. KU wome s lacrosse coach David Wiley said he attributed much of this year s success to the icreased versatility of the offese. Last year we had two prove scorers o the team, Wiley said. This year we have half a doze. Optimism for ext seaso s team will also preset a opportuity for the Jayhawks to asced ito the upper echelo of the atioal wome s lacrosse This too shall pass ladscape. Both to help our chaces at competig for atioal champioships ad to lure recruits, we do eed to step up our level of oppoets we schedule for ext year, Wiley said. The club eeds Nebraska to defeat Missouri this weeked i Columbia, Mo., for the possibility of a divisio title this seaso. Eve without the ulikely Nebraska victory, Kasas could still secure at least secod place i the West Divisio of the Cetral Plais Wome s Lacrosse League with a victory agaist Oklahoma State o Suday. Wichita State has dropped four of its past, icludig aother series to a Missouri Valley Coferece foe. The Shockers oly victory this weeked came i Suday s series fiale agaist Crieghto i a shorteed, eight-iig game. I believe i what we re doig here, ad hopefully some of our guys will take it as motivatio ad we ll go i tomorrow, do our best ad try to wi the ball game, Allma said of the claim he made. Allma is curretly the toughest out i the Jayhawks lieup. The sophomore hit.600 agaist Missouri this weeked ad had a multiple hits i each game of the series.
