After 20 moths of illess ad a exteded leave of absece from admiistrative duties, Dr. Stephe Joes is returig to his post as presidet of Bob Joes Uiversity. The same o as off the podium, Dr. Joes is geuie ad easy to talk to, smilig ad laughig almost costatly. This year s uiversity theme, Kow God, came directly from the presidet s persoal trials. [The Lord] was the oly uchagig thig, ad some days the oly thig that kept me hopeful, Dr. Joes said. He said he wats the studet body to fid the close, persoal relatioship he foud with the Lord. Not everybody has to go through somethig like beig leveled for 20 moths to lear who He is, he said. So what did Dr. Joes miss most durig his time away from campus? The studet body. I feel like I missed out o a whole icomig freshma class, he said. [I] was just watchig from my widow. I hate that. It was the hardest thig! he said with a laugh. Dr. Joes realized how easy it is to lose sight of what truly lasts. Oe of my goals is ot to get too tied dow to my desk, he said. It was always a fight betwee the paper ad the people-. The joy of the people- has eve heighteed i my uderstadig. Besides ifluecig the lives of its studets, Bob Joes Uiversity also strives to impact those i the commuity. We are still fightig with the perceptio that it s a closed campus, Dr. Joes said. Besides the popular Cocert, Opera ad Drama Series that welcomes locals year roud, he believes itercollegiate sports will ivite additioal locals. [I wat] to hold o to the lessos that the Lord taught me, he said. I do t wat to be the same perso. I ve always kow that what I m doig is over my head, but ow I realize that eve [gettig out of bed] is a day-by-day gift, he said. Relyig o the Lord breath-to-breath is somethig I would t be able to brig to this year were it ot for that. Words that are spoke so ofte from the uiversity pulpit became realities for Dr. Joes as he ackowledged what he would ot be able to brig to this year were it ot for the hardships of the last two. It s just become much sweeter, he said. There is a ew sweetess with the family relatioship, too, as a result of what the Lord s take us through. It s evidet i his face that Dr. Joes would t exchage the last two for aythig, that he does t wat to be the same perso. By ecouragig more tha 3,000 college studets to pursue a deeper kowledge of God, Dr. Joes has claimed his trial as a privilege.

Over the ext 16 days, a eve larger umber of viewers would follow the stories of the more tha 10,000 athletes who participated i the games. There s just somethig about sports that everyoe loves ad ca relate to. Maybe it s the competitiveess, which is iheret i all of us. Or perhaps it s the ispiratio that comes from seeig athletes like double-leg amputee Oscar Pistorius overcome staggerig circumstaces to accomplish amazig feats. Maybe it s just the kowledge that if we put our mids to it ad hard eough, we too ca possibly achieve extraordiary success, like 22-time Olympic medalist Michael Phelps. The apostle Paul must have loved sports too. He uses may athletic metaphors i his epistles, comparig Christias to athletes ad life to a race. I Paul s day, athletes did t compete for medals. They competed to wi a wreath of laurel leaves, leaves that would evetually die ad crumble. Paul cotrasts this perishable wreath with the eteral crows that Christia athletes will be rewarded i heave for service to God. Oe day, eve Olympic medals will pass away, just like all thigs o this earth. O Judgmet Day, it wo t matter who is the fastest ma o the plaet. Oly the thigs we do i this life for the glory of God will matter forever. So as we begi this school year this leg of our Christia race it s imperative that we keep our focus o what is really importat. Last week i South Carolia, testimoy cocluded i the state s lawsuit agaist the Obama admiistratio. The lawsuit, filed by Attorey Geeral Ala Wilso, is a effort to stop the admiistratio from limitig the state s right to eact a law that would require all voters to preset a valid photo ID at their respective pollig places. Similar laws i other states have bee passed i recet moths, sparkig outcry from Democrats who see the laws as a attempt to prevet miorities (particularly Africa-Americas, Latios ad low-icome households) from expressig their right to vote. Voter ID laws are ow madatory i 30 states, ad if Democrats are to be believed, the scales could be tipped i favor of Republica cadidates if miority turout is low. Yet i the midst of the cotroversy, oe key poit is beig forgotte. Regardless of whether or ot voters will have to preset ID, they still have the opportuity to vote. Republicas claim the ordiaces are passed to prevet voter fraud. May supporters of the laws have asked ad rightfully so that if so may people eed IDs to cosume alcohol, why is it that much more of a challege to require them to preset a ID before votig? Most of the 30 states that require voter ID are ig to produce free IDs for those who do t have driver s liceses. Oe Cogressioal represetative from Pesylvaia eve voluteered to give rides to pollig statios for those without liceses. The right to vote is oe of the foudatioal priciples that makes the Uited States of America stad out as a uique atio. Yet with that privilege comes resposibility. Sometimes citizes are forced to do somethig icoveiet like preset a ID i order to vote to esure itegrity ad safety withi the political system. It s a small uisace, but ultimately a ecessary oe. Here are some of the chages that have bee made over the summer to keep the campus lookig its best. Diig Commo The log-aticipated first phase of the diig commo s remodelig has bee completed. Now maaged by ARAMARK raked by Food Maagmet as first amog its top 50 compaies the diig commo features ew hours of operatio, ew food ad ew décor. Mr. Adam Summer, the food service director, said he is pleased the costructio was completed i such good time. Studets ca ow eat i the diig commo aytime from 7 a.m. util 7 p.m. o weekdays. Oe of the big thigs we wat everyoe to lear is that it s cotiuous diig ow, Mr. Summer said. The more studets ca spread themselves out ot come all at oce the more successful we ll be. Grab Go has moved to a few kiosks o the opposite ed of the lobby from the POD (Provisios O Demad), a retail stad with driks ad sacks. Also, Grab Go ow features breakfast to pick up the ight before istead of i the morig. Chef Thormose completed a four-year appreticeship at Søllerød Kro, a wellkow i ad restaurat i Copehage, Demark. He also served as le chef petit at a restaurat i Paris for three, where he aloe accouted for the seafood divisio. He has also ed as the executive chef at several coutry clubs, while at the same time writig weekly food colums for The Daily Joural of Seeca, S.C. Five ago, he joied ARAMARK, a compay that provides food services ad facilities maagemet to uiversities ad other istitutios. Workig for ARAMARK has helped Chef Thormose stay educated o culiary treds. I was a little reluctat [about ig for ARAMARK] at first because I really did t kow aythig about them, he said. But the compay has bee fatastic. He recetly completed the ProChef catio program at The Culiary Istitute of America i Hyde Park, N.Y., at ARA- MARK s promptig. Additioally, Chef Thormose was able to participate i the Southeast regio s team for ARAMARK s Culiary Excellece (ACE) competitio. Three competitios are held aually i each regio of North America betwee local chefs, ad the collective wiers the create a team that proceeds to a atioal touramet. These challeges serve to keep the chefs updated o culiary treds, as well as allowig them to exercise their full skill sets creatively i ways they might ot be able to otherwise. ARAMARK has catered 14 Olympic Games sice 1968, ad Chef Thormose catered at the two most recet games i Beijig ad Lodo. It s iterestig because we throw chefs from all over the world together ito oe big pot, ad we all have to together, Chef Thormose said. He served as a caterig chef for six weeks at the Europe/ Americas/Mediterraea statio. Chef Thormose said he felt fortuate to i a public area where he had the privilege of providig food for both spectators ad athletes, icludig Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps. His demadig schedule leaves isuf- ficiet time for hobbies outside of cookig. Off the clock, he avoids chai eateries, ultimately seekig real restaurats. But what costitutes a real restaurat? I just wat well-prepared, good food, Chef Thormose explais. It does t have to be facy. Although he has ed i very diverse eviromets, Chef Thormose said the culture of BJU is ulike ay atmosphere he s foud himself i before. The attitudes ad ethics of the people here are dramatically differet, he said. They re pheomeal compared to what I m used to. He aticipates smoothig the kiks out of the staff s routies, ackowledgig there is still a sigificat amout of to be doe; still, he remais cofidet the ARA- MARK team will arrive at the place where they strive to be. Art Show by Former Faculty Member Joh Roberts Moday, Sarget Art Buildig Begiig Moday, Mr. Joh Roberts, a former member of the BJU art faculty, will be presetig a retrospective art exhibitio featurig his. Durig his may o faculty, Mr. Roberts taught everythig from woodig to pottery to ladscape paitig to calligraphy. Titled Memeto Mori, the program is all about thik[ig] of our lives i the light of what we ll leave behid us ad who we re livig for, said Micah Thompso, who wrote the story for the Vespers. Despite the muggy weather, the pulsig eergy of ethusiastic fas ad perfectly choreographed evets led to a sesatioal ight that will ot soo be forgotte. No matter the outcome of the games, i the ed, athletes ad fas alike came together as oe, proud to call themselves Bruis. Wearig "Brui Pride" T-shirts ad pumpig up the crowd was the studet cheerig sectio, ickamed the Narwhals (after Project Narwhal from Midight Madess). The idea behid a orgaized studet sectio came from studet leaders Aaro Berry ad Adrew Buhr. I order to form a real studet sectio, multiple meetigs ad log hours were eeded to figure out the logistical details like recruitig ad traiig eough studets. We cotacted aroud 25 people, ad from there the word spread util we had over a 100 voluteers, Adrew said. We wated toight to be uique ad we wated to start a traditio, so we pulled together the Narwhals to support the Brui teams, he said. As the BJU wome's team played its first game agaist Truett-McCoell College, more tha 4,000 people were i attedace. By the middle of the me s match agaist Souther Wesleya College, early 7,000 people filled Alumi Stadium, ad aother 4,000 viewers watched the live webcast. The support from Brui Natio did t go uoticed, especially from those o the opposig team. Truett- McCoell goalie Emily Bechke said her team felt a lot of pressure. We were hoored to be at the first match, but we did t expect to see this may people tur out, Emily said. We were a little ervous. For those who sat i the stads, the Warrior mascot from Souther Wesleya was udoubtedly oticed. Alex Gebert, who was decked out i a full warrior costume, said he was impressed by everythig he saw. Questios raised over future of itramural sports By: DAVID BARAL Sports Writer Last Friday ight, a ew kid moved ito the eighborhood. His ame is Itercollegiate Athletics. He eve brought his ow ball to play with, ad all the local kids are excited to have him i tow. The Bruis have take over the playgroud o the athletics side of campus life. Which leaves a pretty big questio: who cares about society sports aymore? Will they cotiue to thrive, or will they fade away like a Popsicle o a July afteroo? Coach Neal Rig, BJU s athletic director ad me s basketball coach, ad Coach Mike LeViere, BJU s director of itramural sports ad wome s basketball coach, have similar outlooks o the future of itramural sports. Both coaches isist that the purpose of the itramural sports program will remai the same: to provide studets with the athletic opportuities they desire. Itramural sports allow studets ot yet o the Bru- is teams to gai experiece ad prove their skill, as well as just have fu. They also help to build uity withi societies. Coach LeViere cofirmed that the schedule for itramural sports this year remais the same. The me s soccer champioship game, affectioately kow as the Turkey Bowl, will remai the itramural champioship game, said Dr. Gary Weier, executive vice presidet for academic affairs. Still, there is o doubt that itercollegiate athletics will have a large impact o society sports. The climate o campus has chaged, Coach Rig said. Whe I was here for three semesters, there were a thousad people at the Friday ight [itramural] game. Nowadays, you do t see that ay more. [The Uiversity] is ready for a itercollegiate team. This chage i climate was most evidet last Friday ight whe almost 7,000 people filled Alumi Stadium for the iaugural games ad more tha 4,000 others watched via live webcast. A Nice Summer Jog For most people, ruig 26.2 miles seems like a impossible feat. Although Abigail ad the team members could ot directly speak about Jesus Christ, they were permitted to share the gospel if studets iquired. Abigail said she saw God i providig opportuities to testify of Christ, most specifically with a studet amed Joh. Seior voice performace major Etha Simpso participated i a five-week opera program i Italy. Because he kew o Italia upo his arrival i Italy, he took lessos from a ative speaker for 80 hours per week.
