I 89, Catawba became a coeducatioal istitutio, with the first woma graduate completig her studies i 89. 11 HISTORY OF THE SAC The South Atlatic Coferece has experieced ad ejoyed over years of athletic traditio ad excellece. The coferece has bee tremedously successful due to dedicated people buildig a premier athletic coferece throughout its history. The distat foreruer of the South Atlatic Coferece was the North State Atlatic Coferece (NSIAC). The NSIAC was formed whe the "Little Six", as it was called, broke from the North Carolia Itercollegiate Athletic Coferece i 9. These charter members icluded Leoir-Rhye,Atlatic Christia (ow Barto), Catawba, Guilford, Elo, ad High Poit. The North State cotiued to grow over the ext years, addig Wester Carolia (9), East Carolia (947) ad Pfeiffer (9). A ame chage became ecessary whe the league accepted Newberry as its first South Carolia member i 9. The league took o the ame Carolias Itercollegiate Athletic Coferece (CIAC) o May th of that year. The CIAC saw several chages i the followig years as East Carolia withdrew from the league i 9. Appalachia State ad Wester Carolia followed i 97 ad 97. All three laded i the Souther Coferece. The South Atlatic Coferece was fouded i 975 solely as a football coferece. The league received its ame from a cotest i which Kurt Breema of Greesboro, NC, became the first to submit the SAC-8 moiker. The SAC-8 cosisted of Carso- Newma, Catawba, Elo, Garder-Webb, Leoir-Rhye, Mars Hill, Newberry, ad Presbyteria. Dr. Fred Betley, of Mars Hill, was amed league presidet for its iaugural year, by a vote of the member istitutios. After the first seaso of play i the SAC-8, the Bears of Leoir-Rhye College captured the first football title. I 989, the league's 5th year of operatio, the South Atlatic Coferece became a comprehesive, all-sports coferece. That year the South Atlatic Coferece sposored sports - football, me's ad wome's basketball, baseball, softball, me's soccer, volleyball, me's golf, me's ad wome's teis. Later the coferece grew to 4 champioship sports by addig wome 's soccer (99), me's ad wome's cross coutry (99) ad wome's golf (999). The South Atlatic Coferece was composed of the same eight member istitutios from 975 util 988, whe Wigate replaced Newberry as the eighth member istitutio. Newberry later rejoied the coferece i 99, while Elo left the league i 997. I July of 998,Tusculum was admitted as a member of the league, givig the coferece ie schools before Garder-Webb left i. Licol Memorial bega play i the coferece i. I 7 Presbyteria left the coferece ad Brevard was admitted to the coferece. Today the coferece is a group of ie church affiliated colleges ad uiversities, similar i size ad athletic philosophy. Sice becomig eligible for NCAA Divisio II postseaso play i 99, the league has set represetatives from all of its sposored sports to NCAA postseaso play.
