4 INTRODUCTION A Message from the Chairma Pat Aldous O behalf of the Board of Directors of Rugby Caada, I am pleased to preset the 2012 Rugby Caada Aual Report. The past year saw may chages i Rugby Caada s way of doig busiess. The fudraisig ad commercial departmets were completely restructured. The rugby departmet is ow fully established with a world-class maagemet team. Rugby Caada is well positioed to take the orgaizatio to the ext level. Our teams performaces overall met the o excuses stadard established i Our Natioal Seior Me s Team wo the games that they eeded to wi, with victories over the USA ad Georgia i Jue ad a solid victory over Russia i November. Although a loss, the Team s performace agaist the Maori All Blacks was outstadig ad etertaiig rugby. Losses to Italy i Jue ad Samoa i November completed the year s test matches. The staff of Rugby Caada ad the commuities of Lagford ad Victoria came together to ru a extremely successful Americas Rugby Champioship. Caada s secod place fiish to Argetia was a solid performace by players selected from the CRC competitio, with several of them beig subsequetly amed to the Natioal side to the November tests. O the seves frot, our me ad wome both wo their divisios of the NACRA World Cup Qualifier touramet held i Ottawa i August. Agai the Rugby Caada staff ad a group of great voluteers ra a outstadig touramet. Earlier i the year the me wo the qualifyig touramet i Hog Kog to become a core coutry for the IRB Seves World Series. Our wome cotiued to show they were oe of the world s best with touramet wis i Las Vegas ad Amsterdam. Losses to touramet wiers Eglad i Hog Kog ad Lodo were hard fought, with the Lodo ecouter beig settled i overtime. I would like to thak all the staff of Rugby Caada for their cotributios i the past year. Without these committed people, Rugby Caada fails. Equally, we must thak the may voluteers throughout the rugby commuity that are essetial to the game. Without the voluteers, othig is possible. The pursuit of a commuity that acts As Oe must cotiue. Oly through workig together will we maximize the success, at all levels. Grassroots to atioal heroes beefit from a cohesive rugby commuity. Pat Aldous, Chairma Rugby Caada A Message from the Chief Executive Officer Graham Brow 2012 marked oe of the most successful years ever by both our athletes ad the Natioal Uio. O the field, tremedous effort has bee put forth by the staff ad board of Rugby Caada o developig a world class rugby departmet. The ivestmet by the City of Lagford, the Iteratioal Rugby Board ad the Govermet of Caada through both Sport Caada ad Ow the Podium alog with the support of our members have helped positio Caada as oe of the top rugby atios i the world. Our rugby departmet ow boosts world class coaches, maagers ad high performace staff. Our rugby departmet has also bee fortuate to attract world class leadership i Mike Chu ad Steve Lacaster. All of our focus must ow be placed o our athletes ad esurig every opportuity for success is maximized. Rugby Caada will ot be able to sit idle. Our rugby departmet will cotiue to require ew ad iovative equipmet ad facilities. Additioal athlete support services will be required as our programs cotiue to develop ad more demads are placed o our athlete s time ad service to the Natioal Uio. Ehaced provicial, regioal ad atioal high performace itegratio must be developed. Commuity rugby must cotiue to be supported ad further ehaced. The growth of the game domestically will be a sigificat metric whe evaluatig the overall success of Caadia Rugby post Remaiig competitive o the world stage will require both commuity ad coutry to cotiue to work together to grow, develop ad trai for the game. From a busiess perspective at the Natioal level, Rugby i Caada has become oe of the top 10 sports i Caada i total reveue ad expese. This brigs forward eormous challeges fiacially for the Uio. Total turover i 2002 by Rugby Caada was approximately 2.5 millio. Te years later aual turover is expected to top 10.5 millio dollars. No dues / o grat reveue (reveue other tha registratio / isurace ad those moies allocated from our fudig parters the IRB ad Sport Caada) represeted approximately 90% of the Uios icome i That umber has decreased to 65% i This is still ot good eough. Rugby Caada must cotiue to drive o dues / o grat reveue geeratio ad develop ew ad iovative reveue streams. The Board recogize the importace of our membership ad that registratio dollars are ot ifiite. However, as with ay busiess there are times whe capital ivestmet is required to help move the busiess forward ad further improve fiacial capacity. Rugby i Caada is o loger a secod or third tier sport. The game is ow played i schools ad commuities across Caada ad registratios cotiue to icrease. Natioal Televisio etworks are ow iterested i developig the sport ad with Olympic iclusio begiig i 2016, the sky really is the limit. Where this sport is withi the atioal sport structure i 2020 will be directly related to the decisios this sport makes over the ext 2-3 years. Our fudig parters, our Foudatio ad busiess parters are all showig their desire to see our athletes succeed ad Caada wi. Growig this game will require ew reveues ad a much more professioal approach to the promotio ad presetatio of the sport atioally. A pla is i place ad I am very cofidet that Caadia rugby will be able to maximize the may opportuities that exist both o ad off the rugby pitch. My hope is that together we ca all cotiue to make rugby i Caada a tier 1 sport. We wat to be world beaters ad commuity leaders. This is our shared jourey for the game as we work AS ONE. 8 Natioal teams Natioal Seior Me s Team FIFTEENS Throughout the summer tests, the Americas Rugby Champioship (ARC), ad the Iteratioal Rugby Series i the UK, the Natioal Seior Me s Fiftees Team put i strog showigs with its defese beig oe of the highlights of the campaig. With ie total matches i 2012, every match proved meaigful ad provided the team s ew players with iteratioal test experiece as they work their way towards Rugby World Cup Posted a record of five wis ad four losses with the biggest wis comig agaist USA, Georgia ad Russia. Though the team lost to Italy i Toroto, beig able to play at BMO Field i frot of over 12,000 spectators was see as a major highlight of the 2012 seaso. As host atio of the Americas Rugby Champioship, Caada welcomed Argetia, Uruguay ad USA to Westhills Stadium i Lagford, BC ad lost oly to Argetia, fiishig secod overall. Fiishig the seaso raked 14th by the IRB, the Natioal Seior Me s Fiftees team made great advacemets i their defece ad showed strog uity ad dedicatio. All of the players that represeted Caada this year i the ARC are curret or former Caadia Rugby Champioship players, reiforcig it as a importat pathway for high performace developmet withi Caadia rugby. Chaucey O Toole Natioal Seior Me s Team Caada vs. Samoa Parc Eirias, Wales 14 WORLD RANKING UNDER20 MEN The Uder 20 Me s Team made good progress i developig Idividual Performace Plas (IPPs), despite a disappoitig 6th place fiish at the IRB Juior World Rugby Trophy. A umber of players have goe oto higher hoours, ad the developmet of selectio profiles ad KPIs for academies have added to the growig professioalism at this level. UNDER19 MEN The Uder 19 Me s Team faced some fierce competitio o their UK tour i February. Though they oly wo oe of three games, they proved to be tough competitors agaist some of the strogest players i their age group. UNDER17 MEN At the Welligto Festival i Berkshire, UK, the Uder 17 Me s Team fiished with a strog wi agaist Belgium U17 ad two competitive losses agaist South Eglad U16 ad Frace U16. 9 Natioal teams Natioal Seior Wome s Team FIFTEENS The Natioal Seior Wome s Team chose to work iterally this year to create depth i player umbers ad develop skill level across the coutry. A majority of the wome s program s top seves players also play for the Natioal Seior Wome s Fiftees program ad the Fiftees squad beefited from sigificat skill developmet through the itesive cetralizatio program. The iteral growth of the team o the pitch was complemeted off the pitch with the appoitmet of Meagha Howat as Maager, Natioal Wome s Program. As a former atioal team member, Meagha has a strog uderstadig of the eeds of the team ad will help propel them towards success i the years to come. The Natioal Seior Wome s Fiftees program held a East/West ad Tight 5 camp i April. The objective of the camp was to provide the athletes with strog iteral competitio ad give the coaches the opportuity to assess talet ad pla for the ext year. UNDER20 WOMEN The Uder 20 Wome s Team, drive by Head Coach Sadro Fiorio, held their first Talet Idetificatio Camp of 2012 i Motreal with additioal trials, camps, ad testig cotiuig throughout the year buildig towards the 2013 Natios Cup. By the ed of 2012 the Uder 20 Wome s program was dow to its top 40 U20s ad top 35 U18s. The growth of this category is promisig for buildig our Natioal Seior Wome s Fiftees ad Seves programs. By the ed of 2012 the U20W program was dow to its top 40 U20s ad top 35 U18s. The growth of this category is promisig for buildig our NSW15s ad NSW7s programs. 16 Natioal champioships Natioal Champioships The Natioal Champioships brig together teams from across the 10 provices to compete for the title of Caada s best. The Caadia Rugby Champioship, Natioal Wome s League ad Natioal Champioship Festival are importat vehicles to idetify ad develop high performace athletes for Rugby Caada s atioal programs. A competitios review was iitiated i 2012 to provide more structure ad clarity aroud the atioal competitios, as well as to provide a proposed Natioal Seves competitio structure. Caadia Rugby Champioship (CRC) I the fourth seaso of the CRC, four teams wet head to head to battle it out for the MacTier Cup through a five roud competitio. It was a race to the fiish with three of the four teams as coteders for the cup right up util the last game; however, the Otario Blues came out victorious for the secod year i a row. This icluded a total of 29 IRB accreditatio courses. May of these were delivered by provicially based IRB accredited Educators. Most of these (25) were cetered upo the accreditatio of ew referees whilst the others were accreditig Referee Coaches or upgradig the level of accreditatio of already accredited Referees, some of whom were registered with Rugby Caada ad others operatig withi the school systems. Rugby Caada delivered over 20 evets ad activities i The evets team successfully executed a ambitious ad busy evet caledar which saw three iteratioal fixtures i three differet cities i just three weeks. O July 15, 2012, over 12,000 people atteded the Caada v. Italy match at BMO Field i Toroto, makig it the highest attedace ever recorded at a iteratioal rugby match i Caada. I just six short weeks the evets team pulled together a highly successful Americas Rugby Champioship evet which saw 6,688 i attedace.
