The Hounds won the first of three head-to-head meetings last month at Highmark Stadium, 1-0. Positioned fourth in the Eastern Conference table after a narrow defeat to Louisville City FC, the Hounds are in the midst of a stretch of 10 straight league games being decided by a goal or less - the longest such streak in the USL era for Pittsburgh. Adding to the previous note, the Hounds defense has been putting in some serious work to say the least. Anchored by goalkeeper Trey Mitchell, who has allowed less goals (6) than games started (8) to date, the Hounds have allowed only 11 goals in 10 games played. The tallies conceded are the lowest number for a Hounds team through 10 games in the USL era - beating the previous low of 12, set in The defensive mastery is even more impressive considering Pittsburgh has dressed 10 defenders so far this season. The club s GAA of 1.10 is tied for fifth-best in the East and they ve allowed more than one goal only three times. For the City Islanders, they ve struggled to start their season, going winless in their past five matches (0-2-3). They sit 12th in the East, but also hold two games in-hand over the Hounds. Since 2011, the Hounds have dropped seven of 18 meetings between the two clubs (6-7-5), and have not scored more than once against the City Islanders since September a stretch of four matches. As mentioned before, Wednesday s tilt presents an interesting scenario where the Hounds can capture the Keystone Derby cup barely one-third into the 2017 season. This is quite the departure from the first two years of the Cup s existence, where the winning team took home the hardware in the final match of each respective head-to-head season series (Pittsburgh) 2016 (Harrisburg). If you re looking to explain the Hounds season so far by any sort of trends, good luck. Interestingly enough, Pittsburgh has won only two of the four matches they ve won the possession battle, including a 2-1 defeat at Richmond where the club recorded a season-best 64 percent rate. Passing metrics bring much of the same, as the club is when eclipsing a 75 percent success rate. Even shots on goal paint a muddled picture as well, with the Hounds when getting on frame four or more times a game. Pittsburgh might be best served to limit opponent SOG though, as the club is when allowing four or more. Playing their third game in eight days, the Hounds paid for a slow start to the match, as Louisville netted the lone tally in the first 10 minutes. Louisville s Brian Ownby sent a low cross into the box, finding its way past multiple defenders to forward Luke Spencer, who tapped it in past goalkeeper Trey Mitchell in the 7th minute.
