AMES ALUMS REUNITED: When the Mavericks acquired fourth-year forward Doug McDermott from New York in a trade-deadline deal on 2/8/18, he was reunited with his high school teammate, Harrison Barnes. The Barnes-McDermott duo led the Ames Little Cyclones to back-to-back Iowa 4A state championships and a combined 53-0 record during their junior and senior years ( and ). When they were seniors in 2010, the odds were roughly one in every 16,000 that a non-collegiate resident of Ames would go on to be an NBA lottery pick. They both achieved that feat, as Barnes was taken with the seventh overall pick in 2012 and McDermott was selected 11 th overall in Coincidently, when he was on the Bulls, McDermott played for another Ames High School alum in Fred Hoiberg. BAREA RECEIVES OCTOBER NBA CARES COMMUNITY ASSIST AWARD: Mavericks guard J.J. Barea received the October NBA Cares Community Assist Award presented by Kaiser Permanente in recognition of his continuous relief efforts in Puerto Rico following devastation caused by Hurricane Maria. The award recognizes an NBA player each month who best reflects the passion that the league and its players share for giving back to their communities. Kaiser Permanente and the NBA honored Barea for his work to immediately initiate aid for Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria. Coordinating five trips to the territory where he was born and raised, Barea used the Mavericks team plane, with help from owner Mark Cuban, to personally deliver much-needed supplies in the days after the hurricane. Working with partners in North Texas, Barea provided more than 100,000 pounds of supplies to the island, including 32 generators, 14,000 pounds of water, 10,000 pounds of food and 3,000 pounds of medical supplies, diapers, clothing, cleaning products and toiletries on the first trip alone. Barea also launched a fundraiser on YouCaring.com for families affected by the hurricane that has raised more than $250,000, and personally raised nearly $500,000. Additionally, he worked with the Mavericks to donate 100 percent of all single-game ticket sales from their Oct. 25 game against the Memphis Grizzlies to Puerto Rico, generating an additional $114,000 for the island s recovery. Before the Mavericks home game against the Boston Celtics on 11/20/17, NBA Cares Ambassador Bob Lanier presented the award to Barea during an on-court ceremony. In addition, Kaiser Permanente and the NBA donated $10,000 to the J.J. Barea Foundation. The NBA Cares Community Assist Award presented by Kaiser Permanente honors the standard set by NBA Legend David Robinson, who improved the community piece by piece. To learn more, please visit WITH THE NO. 9 PICK, THE DALLAS MAVERICKS SELECT : The Dallas Mavericks selected Dennis Smith Jr. with the No. 9 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. The 19-year-old out of NC State was Dallas first selection in the top 10 since drafting Robert Traylor with the sixth pick in the 1998 NBA Draft, then trading his rights to the Milwaukee Bucks for the rights to Dirk Nowitzki, the ninth pick. The explosive point guard averaged 18.1 points, 4.6 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 1.94 steals for the Wolfpack in en route to earning ACC Freshman of the Year and All-ACC Second Team honors. He led the ACC in assists (ranked 13 th nationally) and finished sixth in the conference in scoring. He also set an NC State freshman-record with 62 steals in Smith became the only player in ACC history to register two triple-doubles in the same season in conference play. His four 30-point games were the most in ACC freshman history. In addition to acquiring Nowitzki, the franchise s all-time leading scorer, with the ninth pick in the 1998 NBA Draft, Dallas also used the ninth pick in 1981 to draft Rolando Blackman, who stood as the team s all-time leading scorer until Nowitzki surpassed him in The Mavericks are hoping the ninth pick in 2017 produces yet another all-time great player for the franchise. BACK-TO-BACKS: The Mavericks went 7-8 in the first half of back-to-backs and 3-12 in the second half of back-to-backs in They swept two back-to-backs, split six and were swept in seven. The Mavericks had 15 back-to-backs this season, 11 of which came prior to the All-Star Break, and two of which required no travel (home-and-home). Along with the two home-and-home back-to-backs, Dallas played nine back-to-backs that began at home and concluded on the road, and four back-to-backs that began and ended on the road. Dallas did not play any road-to-home back-to-backs in The Mavericks posted the same exact record in back-to-backs in (7-8 in the first half of back-to-backs and 3-12 in the second half). They swept one, split eight, and were swept in six last year DALLAS MAVERICKS RECORDS IN BACK-TO-BACKS Game Overall Record Home-Road Road-Home Road-Road Home-Home First Game Second Game Mavericks Swept: 2 Splits: 6 Opponents Swept: 7 EARLIEST START TO SEASON SINCE MAVS INAUGURAL YEAR: Dallas opened the regular season against Atlanta at home on Oct. 18. It was the earliest the Mavericks began a season since the team s inaugural year in That year, Dallas actually completed five games by Oct. 18 (10/11/80 vs. San Antonio, 10/14/80 vs. Seattle, 10/15/80 at Denver, 10/17/80 vs. Kansas City, 10/18/80 at San Antonio). The NBA moved the start date of the regular season up from Oct. 25 in to Oct. 17 in For the first time in the league s 72-year history, there were no stretches of four games in five nights. HOW THE ROSTER WAS BUILT: Dallas had another busy offseason in The Mavericks held the ninth overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, their first selection in the top 10 since 1998, and drafted explosive guard Dennis Smith Jr. out of North Carolina State. The 2017 ACC Freshman of the Year immediately impressed at the MGM Resorts NBA Summer League 2017 in Las Vegas, averaging a team-high 17.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, a team-high 4.2 assists, 2.2 steals and 25.8 minutes en route to being named to the All-NBA Summer League First Team. On 7/3/17, Dallas signed former Baylor big man Johnathan Motley, the 2017 Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award winner, to a two-way contract, after he went undrafted in the 2017 NBA Draft. On 7/6/17, Dallas re-signed 13-time All-Star Dirk Nowitzki, bringing back the franchise s greatest player for his 20 th season. On 7/13/17, the Mavericks signed forward Maxi Kleber, who hails from Würzburg, Germany, the same hometown as Nowitzki. On 8/28/17, Dallas signed center Nerlens Noel, who was acquired by the Mavericks from the 76ers in a trade-deadline deal in On 1/10/18, the Mavericks were awarded two-way forward Jalen Jones via a waiver claim, after the Dallas native was waived by New Orleans on 1/8/18. On 2/8/18, Dallas signed free agent Kyle Collinsworth, after the former BYU guard had a couple of stints with the Mavericks earlier in the season. The Mavericks also acquired fourth-year forward Doug McDermott from New York and a 2018 second-round pick from Denver, in a three-team trade-deadline deal that sent guard Devin Harris to the Nuggets and guard Emmanuel Mudiay to the Knicks on 2/8/18. On 4/1/18, the Mavericks signed Aaron Harrison for the remainder of the season, after the former Kentucky guard originally signed a 10-day contract with the club on 3/22/18. The Mavericks end-of-the-season roster featured 17 players. Seven of the 17 were in their first season with Dallas (Collinsworth, Harrison, Jones, Kleber, Motley, McDermott and Smith). Two of the 17 were members of the Mavericks 2011 NBA championship team (Nowitzki and Barea) and three had championship experience overall (Harrison Barnes won a title with Golden State in 2015). The roster also featured five players born outside of one of the 50 U.S. states or Washington, D.C.: Barea (Puerto Rico), Nowitzki and Kleber (Germany), Salah Mejri (Tunisia), and Dwight Powell (Canada). HISTORY OF THE FRANCHISE: The campaign marked the 38 th season in the history of the Dallas Mavericks. Dallas has won three division titles (1987, 2007, 2010) and appeared in the postseason 21 times (including 15 times in a 16-year span from 2001 to 2016). The Mavericks have made four Western Conference Finals appearances (1988, 2003, 2006, 2011) and advanced to the NBA Finals twice (2006 and 2011). In 2011, Dallas defeated Miami in six games to capture its first NBA championship in franchise history.
