Nowitzki, who was assisted by J.J. Barea on the play, joined Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (38,387), Karl Malone (36,928), Kobe Bryant (33,643), Michael Jordan (32,292) and Wilt Chamberlain (31,419) as the only players in league history to reach 31,000 career points. DAZZLES IN DEBUT: Mavericks first-round pick Dennis Smith Jr. made his NBA debut against Atlanta on 10/18/17 and started at point guard. Smith became the first rookie to start a season opener for Dallas since Devin Harris in He finished with a team-high-tying 16 points and a game-high 10 assists in 30 minutes. Smith (19 years, 327 days) became the youngest player in NBA history to record a point-assist double-double in his NBA debut. The previous youngest was Isiah Thomas (20 years, 183 days), who had 31 points and 11 dimes in his debut for the Pistons on 10/30/81. Before Smith, Thomas was also the youngest player to dish out 10-plus assists in his debut. 4 CARLISLE RECORDS 700TH CAREER WIN, MOVES INTO 17TH PLACE ON NBA S ALL-TIME WINS LIST: Rick Carlisle, who holds an all-time record of (.554) as a head coach, moved into 17 th place on the NBA s all-time wins list in Carlisle recorded his 700 th career win with Dallas victory over the L.A. Clippers on 12/2/17, becoming the 18 th coach in NBA history to reach the plateau. He joined San Antonio s Gregg Popovich and the Clippers Doc Rivers as the only active coaches with 700 victories. By defeating Rivers Clippers for career win No. 700, Carlisle became the first coach to reach the milestone against a fellow 700-win coach. Carlisle reached the mark in his 1,237 th game as a head coach and his 745 th game with the Mavericks (he went ,.566, in his first 1,237 games overall, and ,.562, in his first 745 games with Dallas). He passed Red Holzman (696) for 18 th place on the league s all-time wins list with Dallas victory over Milwaukee on 11/18/17. He also averaged a career-high pointers per game (he went 115-of-313,.367, from deep in ). Barea led the league in total assists off the bench (346) and assists per game off the bench (6.0) in He finished first on the Mavericks in assists and fifth in points per game. Barea led Dallas in assists a team-high 41 times in (including ties). The Mavericks were 4-1 this season when Barea scored 20-plus points. He produced a career-high 10 double-digit assist games in (previous high: 8 in with Minnesota). His six double-doubles in were one off his career-high (7 in ). Barea scored in double figures 44 times and handed out five-plus assists 48 times. He recorded at least eight points in 38 of the team s first 43 games. AMES ALUMS REUNITED: When the Mavericks acquired fourth-year forward Doug McDermott from New York in a trade-deadline deal on 2/8/18, he was reunited with his high school teammate, Harrison Barnes. The Barnes-McDermott duo led the Ames Little Cyclones to back-to-back Iowa 4A state championships and a combined 53-0 record during their junior and senior years ( and ). When they were seniors in 2010, the odds were roughly one in every 16,000 that a non-collegiate resident of Ames would go on to be an NBA lottery pick. BAREA RECEIVES OCTOBER NBA CARES COMMUNITY ASSIST AWARD: Mavericks guard J.J. Barea received the October NBA Cares Community Assist Award presented by Kaiser Permanente in recognition of his continuous relief efforts in Puerto Rico following devastation caused by Hurricane Maria. The award recognizes an NBA player each month who best reflects the passion that the league and its players share for giving back to their communities. Kaiser Permanente and the NBA honored Barea for his work to immediately initiate aid for Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria. Coordinating five trips to the territory where he was born and raised, Barea used the Mavericks team plane, with help from owner Mark Cuban, to personally deliver much-needed supplies in the days after the hurricane. Working with partners in North Texas, Barea provided more than 100,000 pounds of supplies to the island, including 32 generators, 14,000 pounds of water, 10,000 pounds of food and 3,000 pounds of medical supplies, diapers, clothing, cleaning products and toiletries on the first trip alone. Barea also launched a fundraiser on YouCaring.com for families affected by the hurricane that has raised more than $250,000, and personally raised nearly $500,000. Additionally, he worked with the Mavericks to donate 100 percent of all single-game ticket sales from their Oct. 25 game against the Memphis Grizzlies to Puerto Rico, generating an additional $114,000 for the island s recovery. Before the Mavericks home game against the Boston Celtics on 11/20/17, NBA Cares Ambassador Bob Lanier presented the award to Barea during an on-court ceremony. The 19-year-old out of NC State was Dallas first selection in the top 10 since drafting Robert Traylor with the sixth pick in the 1998 NBA Draft, then trading his rights to the Milwaukee Bucks for the rights to Dirk Nowitzki, the ninth pick. The explosive point guard averaged 18.1 points, 4.6 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 1.94 steals for the Wolfpack in en route to earning ACC Freshman of the Year and All-ACC Second Team honors. He led the ACC in assists (ranked 13 th nationally) and finished sixth in the conference in scoring. He also set an NC State freshman-record with 62 steals in Smith became the only player in ACC history to register two triple-doubles in the same season in conference play. His four 30-point games were the most in ACC freshman history. HOW THE ROSTER WAS BUILT: Dallas had another busy offseason in The Mavericks held the ninth overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, their first selection in the top 10 since 1998, and drafted explosive guard Dennis Smith Jr. out of North Carolina State. On 7/6/17, Dallas re-signed 13-time All-Star Dirk Nowitzki, bringing back the franchise s greatest player for his 20 th season. On 7/13/17, the Mavericks signed forward Maxi Kleber, who hails from Würzburg, Germany, the same hometown as Nowitzki. On 8/28/17, Dallas signed center Nerlens Noel, who was acquired by the Mavericks from the 76ers in a trade-deadline deal in On 1/10/18, the Mavericks were awarded two-way forward Jalen Jones via a waiver claim, after the Dallas native was waived by New Orleans on 1/8/18.
