6 HOW THE ROSTER WAS BUILT: Dallas had another busy offseason in The Mavericks held the ninth overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, their first selection in the top 10 since 1998, and drafted explosive guard Dennis Smith Jr. out of North Carolina State. The reigning ACC Freshman of the Year immediately impressed at the MGM Resorts NBA Summer League 2017 in Las Vegas, averaging a team-high 17.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, a team-high 4.2 assists, 2.2 steals and 25.8 minutes en route to being named to the All-NBA Summer League First Team. On 7/3/17, Dallas signed former Baylor forward Johnathan Motley, the 2017 Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year, to a two-way contract (after Motley went undrafted in the 2017 NBA Draft). On 7/6/17, Dallas re-signed 13-time All-Star Dirk Nowitzki, bringing back the franchise s greatest player for his 20 th season. Dallas has won three division titles (1987, 2007, 2010) and appeared in the postseason 21 times (including 15 times in a 16-year span from 2001 to 2016). The Mavericks have made four Western Conference Finals appearances (1988, 2003, 2006, 2011) and advanced to the NBA Finals twice (2006 and 2011). In 2011, Dallas defeated Miami in six games to capture its first NBA championship in franchise history. THE NEW TWO-WAY CONTRACTS: The season will mark the first year NBA two-way contracts will be implemented. NBA teams are allowed to have up to two players under two-way contracts who will spend the bulk of the season in the NBA G League and not more than 45 days with their NBA team. Two-way players are paid a corresponding daily amount based on the number of days they play in each league. Only players with four-orfewer years of NBA experience are able to sign two-way contracts, which can be for either one or two seasons. The Mavericks G League Team, the Texas Legends, play their home games in Frisco, Texas. Johnathan Motley and Gian Clavell are the Mavericks two-way players this season. Motley went undrafted in the 2017 NBA Draft after three seasons at Baylor ( ). As a junior, he averaged 17.3 points, 9.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.1 blocks per game en route to being named Baylor s first-ever consensus All-American, taking home second-team honors. He was also selected as the 2017 Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year, becoming first Baylor player to win a major individual award. Clavell, a former Colorado State standout, went undrafted in the 2017 NBA Draft after earning Mountain West Player of the Year honors as a redshirt senior last season.
