A&M-Corpus Christi s two games this weekend will be a part of the UTRGV Tournament, with Fairleigh Dickinson competing as the fourth team. This weekend will mark the second meeting for the Islanders with UTRGV and UNLV. The Runnin Rebels skipped passed the Islanders last year 1-0 in the season opener in Las Vegas, while the Blue and Green played to a 2-2 tie with Vaqueros at the Jack in A&M-Corpus Christi is looking to top its best start in program history in 2014, when the Islanders earned a win and a tie in the opening weekend of the season. 2 NEWS AND NOTES LAST MATCH The Islanders squared off with Texas in the only preseason game of 2016 last Friday. The Longhorns topped the Islanders 3-0 in Austin. Jordan Wainwright went the distance in net for the Islanders, making five saves on the night. Shayla Spearman and Kaitlyn Joy tallied the only shots for the Blue and Green. SOUTH TEXAS SHOWDOWN Friday s match will be the inaugural competition in the South Texas Showdown presented by NavyArmy Community Credit Union. Each school will earn points based on results when the two institutions compete annually in 12 sports. The rivalry series was created in an effort to increase exposure for the two universities in their respective communities and the entire South Texas area. The home leg of the 2016 soccer portion will be played at the Jack on Sept. 11 at 7 P.M. ISLANDERS FIRST CLASS The senior class of Islanders Women s Soccer represents the first group of players to play with the program from their freshman to senior seasons. Combined, the seven seniors have played in 296 games with 17 goal and 11 assists. Yvette Franco tops the chart for career goals with 15, nine ahead of Alyssa Miller in second place. Emma Biba returns as the all-time leader in games played with 52, follow by Audrey Kuhl and Hannah Joseph with 50 and 49 caps, respectively. BACK IN ACTION Franco returns to the Islanders lineup after missing the final nine games of the 2015 season with an injury. Fellow senior Kallyn Redona enters her final year on the Island as the only fifth-year member of the program, after seeing her 2015 campaign come to an early close with injuries. A NEW FACE ON STAFF The Islanders welcomed a new member to the coaching staff in late July. Mario Alaniz joined the program as a volunteer assistant. Alaniz earned two letters at Houston Victoria, where he bagged a pair of goals for the Jaguars ISLANDERS WOMEN S SOCCER SUMMER TRANSFER LIST Head coach Shanna Caldwell inked a trio of transfers to the roster this season. Junior goalkeeper Jordan Wainwright is the presumptive No. 1 between the pipes. Once she steps foot on the pitch for an official game, Wainwright will become the first junior netminder in program history. Redshirt-sophomore Kaitlyn Joy is the only transfer with Division I experience. The Dripping Springs, Texas, native returns to her home state after spending a pair of season at the University of Idaho. Andi Bethard rounds out the transfer list as a outside defender from Cisco College. REACHING NEW HEIGHTS A&M-Corpus Christi enters the 2016 season after reaching the Southland Conference Tournament for the first time in program history in The Islanders set the school record for wins in a season with five, after they took five of the last seven games of the season to earn the fifth seed for the conference tournament. NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK 11 newcomers highlight the 21-player roster, the lasrgest number since the inaugural season of Islanders Soccer, including eight freshmen who aim to strike into the starting XI. Defender Karla Kedenburg has impressed in early training sessions since the start of camp. The German international has wasted little time acclimating to the Texas heat and the artificial turf at the Dugan Soccer Stadium. Midfielder Chayse Bauer will be one of a few players in the Southland Conference with international experience after representing the US at the 2015 Maccabi Games, where she won a gold medal with a victory over Sweden in the finals. The freshman class boasts speed and strength over height with an average height of 5-5. Shayla Spearman comes in as one of the quickest players, despite the shortest height on the team at 5-3.
