St. Cloud State, Minnesota and Colorado College three teams that finished second, third and fourth, respectively, in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association race and earned NCAA tournament berths a year ago all opened their conference seasons on Oct by taking three of four points from their respective opponents. But the going for those three nationally-ranked clubs last weekend was anything but easy. The Huskies, Golden Gophers and Tigers played in a combined total of six one-goal games this past Friday and Saturday but in the end, all three found a way to get an early jump on the rest of the 10-team field in the 28-game conference race. St. Cloud State s home-and-home series with Minnesota State saw the Huskies claim a 6-5 overtime victory at the National Hockey Center last Friday (Oct. 25) followed by a 1-1 overtime draw at the Midwest Wireless Civic Center on Saturday. con t on next page WCHA STANDINGS Conference Only Overall Pts Record Win% GF- GA Record Win% GF- GA 1 Colorado College Minnesota St. Cloud State Michigan Tech Minnesota-Duluth Minnesota State Alaska Anchorage Denver North Dakota Wisconsin LAST WEEK S RESULTS Tue., Oct. 22: Univ. of Manitoba North Dakota 6 (x). 2 WCHA/2 Up at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena in Houghton, Minnesota had to fight tooth-and-nail to emerge with a 5-4 win and 3-3 overtime tie against much-improved Michigan Tech. And at the Duluth Entertainment & Convention Center, Colorado College was taken to the ropes by host Minnesota Duluth in a 4-4 overtime tie and 4-3 win. Six WCHA games... six one-goal games. A year ago ( ), a total of 91 WCHA games were decided by one goal or less. As the month of November arrives this Friday, three more WCHA teams Denver, Alaska Anchorage and Wisconsin will mark their first conference action of the season on Friday and Saturday, Nov The defending MacNaughton Cup-champion Pioneers will travel to Madison to take on the Badgers at the Kohl Center while the Seawolves will play host to Minnesota Duluth at Sullivan Arena. Those two matchups will leave only North Dakota as the only team to have not played a league game yet this season (the Fighting Sioux open their WCHA season on Nov. 8-9 at St. Cloud State). One other conference series this week Michigan Tech at Colorado College will find the Huskies and Tigers playing a rare Friday-Sunday series at the Colorado Springs World Arena. The non-conference slate for Nov. 1-2 finds four WCHA teams engaged against teams from the College Hockey America and the ECAC. Minnesota hosts Alabama-Huntsville (CHA) at Mariucci Arena, Minnesota State entertains Bemidji State (CHA) at the MWCC, North Dakota plays at ECAC-members Princeton and Yale, and St. Cloud State hosts RPI (ECAC). In non-conference play last Friday (Oct. 25) and Saturday (Oct. 26), both Denver and North Dakota earned series sweeps at home while Wisconsin split on the road. The Pioneers defeated Alabama Huntsville, 7-2 and 7-0, the Fighting Sioux downed Niagara, 6-4 and 5-3, and the Badgers lost 4-2 at Boston College last Friday before rebounding with a 5-1 triumph at Northeastern on Saturday.
