The Michigan Tech Huskies pulled off the biggest upset of the college hockey season so far last Friday (Oct. 20) night in Grand Forks, N.D., when they upset No. 1-ranked and defending national champion North Dakota, 5-4, in the first game of their weekend WCHA series. In notching their first victory of the young season, the Huskies rallied around a goal and an assist from three different players forwards Paul Cabana and Tab Lardner and defenseman Clint Way, whose power-play tally at 14:32 of the third period proved to the game-winner. 2 WCHA Information Services INFORMATION SERVICES The WCHA Public Relations & Sports Information Office serves those wishing to access information on the conference, its teams, staff members, and student-athletes. Media members and the public have access to many different services under the conference umbrella. The league office strives to assist those interested in obtaining information and focuses its efforts on showcasing the accomplishments of its teams and players. In addition to it s weekly press release, the conference provides several other avenues to assist the public and the media in following the WCHA. INFORMATION DISSEMINATION Information is released on a frequent basis. The conference s weekly news release featuring standings, schedules, box scores, team notebooks, team and individual statistics, and attendance figures is issued on Sundays or Mondays during the playing season and is available via the conference s fax-ondemand service with Pivotal Communications of Atlanta, Ga., as well as on the league s official web site: WCHA Players of the Week offense, defense and rookie are released Mondays throughout the regular season. These, too, are available via fax-ondemand and the web site. The WCHA s official website address is: The conference site is produced through the joint efforts of the league s public relations office and University Netcasting, Inc. The WCHA is a part of UNI s official home of collegiate athletics on the world wide web at: Visitors will find information on all facets of the league, including weekly press releases, statistics, playing schedules, game-by-game results and summaries, players of the week, in-depth team-by-team data, rosters, ticket information, comprehensive league archives, the league s weekly radio show and merchandise. Media members can access weekly press releases and statistical updates for the conference as well as all 10 leaguemember teams. 4 con t from p. 1 Elsewhere in conference play over the weekend, defending WCHA-champion and secondranked Wisconsin (6-0-0) remained unbeaten on the season with a pair of come-from-behind, 3-2 and 4-3 (ot), home-ice wins over Minnesota State, Mankato while the high-scoring Minnesota Golden Gophers (7.00 goals per game average) stretched their season-opening winning streak to four with 3-1 and 9-2 victories over visiting Minnesota-Duluth. In nonleague games, St. Cloud State moved to with a 3-1, 7-0 sweep in a home-and-home set against College Hockey Americamember Bemidji State while Denver dropped a pair of one-goal, 3-2 games to visiting Hockey Eastpower Boston College. Defending MacNaughton Cup champion Wisconsin has won 27 of its last 32 league games dating back to the start of the season and the Badgers are now (.798) over their last 47 games overall. The upcoming weekend of Oct finds four league series headlining the schedule. Colorado College travels to Michigan Tech, Minnesota hosts Alaska Anchorage, Denvers heads to St. Cloud State, and North Dakota travels to MSU, Mankato. Three of those clubs UAA, DU and SCSU will mark their conference-season opening games of Outside of league competition next weekend (Oct ), the Badgers head east to take on Boston College (Friday) and Northeastern (Saturday) of the Hockey East Association, while Minnesota- Duluth opens its regular season home schedule with a two-game set against CCHA-member Northern Michigan. BC ended then No. 1-ranked Wisconsin s season last March 25 with a 4-1 win at the NCAA West Regional at Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis XCEL ENERGY WCHA FINAL FIVE SET FOR MARCH IN ST. PAUL The Western Collegiate Hockey Association will be bringing its annual postseason playoff championship the Xcel Energy WCHA Final Five to St. Paul, Minnesota for the next three years, beginning with the 2001 event next March 15, 16 and 17. The Final Five will be played in ice hockey s newest state-of-the-art facility the 18,000-seat Xcel Enery Center, home to one of the National Hockey League s Minnesota Wild. The birthplace of the modern WCHA Playoff Championship (i.e. final four and WCHA Final Five) in 1988, the City of Saint Paul will be hosting the conference playoff championship for the ninth time overall in The previous eight appearances at the former Saint Paul Civic Center ( , 1995, 1997) drew 401,602 fans and an average crowd of 11,474 per game. The past two seasons, 1999 and 2000, the WCHA Final Five was held at Target Center in Minneapolis, with last year s tournament drawing 49,717. Information on ordering tickets for the 2001 Xcel Energy WCHA Final Five set for next March 15, 16 and 17 can be obtained by phoning: The 2002 Xcel Energy WCHA Final Five will take place March 14, 15 and 16 at the Xcel Energy Center while the dates of the 2003 Xcel Energy WCHA Final Five will be held March 13, 14 and 15. SEAWOLVES Earning its first win of the season, UAA extended its winning streak over in-state rival Alaska Fairbanks to four with a 3-1 win at Fairbanks last Friday (Oct. 20) night...this was the first game of this year s battle for the Alaska Airlines Governor s Cup, a traveling trophy that goes to the winner of the season series...the series continues Sunday night in Anchorage and will resume in another home-and-home series March 2 & 3...the Seawolves, who currently have the Cup, have won it four of the seven times it has been contested. UAA leads the all-time series with UAF, UAA also leads the series in Anchorage, Freshman D Tyler Schnell will not play in the Fairbanks game due to a fractured clavicle. After getting the game-winner vs UAF this past Friday night, junior F Gregg Zaporzan leads the Seawolves in points, 1-3=4...he is the only Seawolf to have at least one point in each of UAA s three games. In three games, sophomore F Dan Gilkerson has three goals equaling his total goals in 35 games last season. Freshman G Chris King earned his first collegiate win in goal Friday night at UAF, saving 16 of 17 shots. UAA had 34 shots on goal in Friday s contest, doubling the 17 shots Fairbanks put on target. UAA s top line is also at the top of the team s shots on goal list...junior F Mike Scott has 12 shots, junior C Steve Cygan has 11 and junior F Gregg Zaporzan has ten. Seawolf penalty-killers have allowed just one PPG in nine situations (88.9%). UAA has converted on 3 of 10 of its own power-play opportunities, scoring a power play goal in each of its three games. TIGERS The Tigers return to action after an off week when they take on Michigan Tech next Friday (Oct. 27) and Saturday (Oct. 28) in Houghton. CC s sweep over MSU, Mankaton Oct was the Tigers first at home since mid-november of 1999 when they defeated Michigan Tech twice at the World Arena. Special teams accounted for half of CC s goals against Minnesota State, as the Tigers scored three on the powerplay and three more shorthanded, including two of each in the 6-5 victory on Oct Trent Clark, who had four SHGs last season, didn t score one against the Mavericks, but he did set up one by Mark Cullen in CC s 6-2 victory on Oct. 13. Colorado College, which scored three times in the third period vs MSU on Oct. 1 and also in the second period against the Mavericks on Oct. 14, were in games in which they did that last season. Team captain Paul Manning, who suffered a knee injury in practice two weeks ago and missed the MSU series, is expected to return to the lineup for this week s series at Michigan Tech. Peter Sejna s collegiate debut two weeks ago was outstanding, as he finished the weekend with three goals and two assists...he was named WCHA Rookie of the Week on Oct. 15. Mark Cullen, who was WCHA Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 15, matched Sejna s five points for the weekend, while D Tom Preissing finished with 4 (3g, 1a)...his unassisted shorthanded goal at 13:35 of the third period, which gave the Tigers a 6-2 lead at the time, turned out to be the game-winner.

5 MICHIGAN TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY PIONEERS Denver opened the season last weekend, hosting No. 3-ranked Boston College...Denver could not manage to steal a game from BC, losing by a score of 3-2 in each game...du, however, did play very well and forced one of the top teams in the country to work hard to earn the victories. Senior forwards Kelly Popadynetz and Bjorn Engstrom are slowly climbing there way into the Pioneers Century Club...Popadynetz currently stands with 80 points in his career, while Engstrom has accumulated 81...Popadynetz has posted an assist in each of his first two games this season. DU struggled on the power-play (1-of-15) in its opening weekend of action vs BC. Denver s youth has jumped out to a quick start...of the four goals posted against BC, three were scored by sophomores (J.J. Hartmann, Kevin Doell, Jordan Bianchin), while the fourth was knocked home by freshman Lukas Dora.
