In WCHA country, meanwhile, Alaska Anchorage will host Colorado College, Iona and Maine in the Nye Frontier Classic Friday and Saturday at Sullivan Arena while Wisconsin will entertain Alabama-Huntsville at the Kohl Center in Madison. In addition to the slate of non-conference games, there are two exhibition matches this week. Denver hosts the University of Windsor at Magness Arena on Monday (Oct. 14) night while Minnesota Duluth hosts Lakehead University on Wednesday (Oct. 16). Not playing this week are North Dakota and St. Cloud State. In action this past weekend (Oct ), two WCHA teams brought home tournament championships. The Denver Pioneers captured the Maverick Stampede in Omaha with a 5-0 win over Michigan State last Friday and a 3-2 triumph over Nebraska- Omaha on Saturday while the North Dakota Fighting Sioux earned the Xerox College Hockey Showcase title in Buffalo, N.Y., with a 8-0 victory over Canisius last Friday and a 5-4 overtime win over Michigan on Saturday. In other non-conference results, Minnesota downed Ohio State 7-2 in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame before 15,204 at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, St. Cloud State split at Ferris State (2-1, 3-6), Colorado College split at home with UMass-Lowell (6-4, 1-4), Alaska Anchorage split their home series with Alaska Fairbanks (4-2, 0-4), host Wisconsin lost to RPI (1-5) last Friday and then defeated Northern Michigan (4-3) on Saturday in the Ice Breaker Invitational to hand first-year head coach Mike Eaves his initial collegiate victory, and Minnesota Duluth tied (2-2) and lost (3-5) to visiting Notre Dame. 4 WCHA TEAM NOTEBOOKS OCT. 14 WCHA/4 ALASKA ANCHORAGE UAA begins the season splitting its two-game home opening series against Alaska Fairbanks... the Seawolves won last Friday (Oct. 11) night 4-2, before falling in Saturday (Oct. 12) night s duel, Alaska Anchorage opened the season with intrastate rival Alaska Fairbanks for the sixth time in history... UAA is now all-time in home openers against the Nanooks... UAA and UAF s two-game series in Anchorage is the first half of the battle for the Alaska Airlines Governor s Cup... the Cup is awarded to the winner of the four-game series... the two teams will play one another again in Fairbanks on March the season marks the 10th consecutive season of the Cup... the Seawolves 4-2 victory over Alaska Fairbanks in last Friday night s season-opening game gives UAA an all-time opening game record of and a mark in home openers... UAA has won its past two season opening games UAA defeated Northeastern, 5-3, in last season s opener... Alaska Anchorage head coach John Hill is 2-0 in season opening games... sophomore forward John Hopson recorded his first career two-goal game in last Friday night s 4-2 victory over Alaska Fairbanks... both of Hopson s goals were scored in the first period... COLORADO COLLEGE Last Saturday (Oct. 12) marked CC s 100th game at the Colorado Springs World Arena, excluding three exhibition games (all victories) against Canadian universities, since opening the facility in January the Tigers own a winning percentage of.725 ( ) in those 100 outings... senior defenseman Tom Preissing celebrated his debut as team captain with the first hat trick of his collegiate career last Friday, scoring three of CC s four power-play goals to fuel the 6-4 victory over UMass-Lowell... a two-time All-WCHA selection, Preissing now has 77 career points (19g,58a) in 114 games as a Tiger... he s been involved in 13 game-winning goals, including last Friday when his third tally of the game snapped a 4-4 tie at 11:15 of the third period...
