After a December-opening that saw four WCHA and one non-conference series end in sweeps for North Dakota, St. Cloud State, Wisconsin, Denver and Colorado College last Friday (Dec. 1) and Saturday (Dec. 2), the battle for the top five places has tightened considerably. The conference standings now show six points separating six teams between second and fifth place. The second-ranked Fighting Sioux (12-2-4) won twice at Alaska Anchorage (4-2, 3-0) to boost their lead in the MacNaughton Cup derby to three points over Minnesota and stretch their unbeaten streak to 11 games (10-0-1). The Gophers, meanwhile, were defeated twice at Denver (4-0, 4-1), a pair of victories that helped the Pioneers move into a fifth place tie in the WCHA and up their own unbeaten streak to five games (4-0-1). Defending league champion Wisconsin came up with 5-4 and 4-3 (ot) decisions at Minn-Duluth and climbed into a third place tie, while St. Cloud State took a pair of games (4-3 ot, 4-3) at MTU to move to overall. Colorado College, unbeaten over the last five games (4-0-1), also moved to with non-conference wins over Air Force (4-1) and Bemidji State (2-1). The schedule for Dec finds North Dakota at CC, Denver at Alaska Anchorage, and Wisconsin at St. Cloud State in WCHA action while Michigan Tech plays home-and-home against CCHA-member N. Michigan, UMD entertains Bemidji State of College Hockey America and MSU engages traveling CHAmember Alabama-Huntsville. Next Saturday, Minnesota hosts MAAC-member Quinnipiac before welcoming the Russia Select Team on Sunday night in the first game of their international/wcha tour. THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING The Russian Ice Hockey Federation is sending a Regional Selection Team, made up of players who represent some of the top-level clubs in the country, to the United States Dec for a four-game WCHA tour of Minnesota, Wisconsin, St. Cloud State and Minnesota State, Mankato as well as a game in Ann Arbor against the U.S. National Development Team. 2 WCHA INFORMATION SERVICES INFORMATION SERVICES The WCHA Public Relations & Sports Information Office serves those wishing to access information on the conference, its teams, staff members, and student-athletes. Media members and the public have access to many different services under the conference umbrella. The league office strives to assist those interested in obtaining information and focuses its efforts on showcasing the accomplishments of its teams and players. In addition to it s weekly press release, the conference provides several other avenues to assist the public and the media in following the WCHA. INFORMATION DISSEMINATION Information is released on a frequent basis. The conference s weekly news release featuring standings, schedules, box scores, team notebooks, team and individual statistics, and attendance figures is issued on Sundays or Mondays during the playing season and is available via the conference s fax-on-demand service with Pivotal Communications of Atlanta, Ga., as well as on the league s official web site: WCHA Players of the Week offense, defense and rookie are released Mondays throughout the regular season. These, too, are available via fax-on-demand and the web site. Media members can access weekly press releases and statistical updates for the conference as well as all 10 league-member teams. This Week in the WCHA is an 22-week long audio look inside one of America s premier college hockey leagues. The program provides complete and comprehensive coverage of the week s action with highlights, coadh and player interviews, and stats from around the league. New shows are available each Thursday during the regular season. 4 RUSSIA SELECT TEAM TO ARRIVE FRIDAY WCHA/USA TOUR DECEMBER 8-20, 2000 The Western Collegiate Hockey Association, under the leadership of Commissioner Bruce M. McLeod, will add to its rich history of hosting international hockey teams later this week when a Russia Select Team arrives from Moscow Friday (Dec. 8) night in Minneapolis. Comprised of both experienced and younger players from several of the top clubs in the Russian league, the Russia Select Team will treat midwestern hockey fans to five games on its 12-day tour, including stops at WCHA-member schools University of Minnesota, University of Wisconsin, St. Cloud State University, and Minnesota State University, Mankato. 5 Four WCHA teams North Dakota (10-0-1), Colorado College (4-0-1), Denver (4-0-1), and St. Cloud State (4-0-0) are in the midst of impressive unbeaten streaks. Four WCHA teams North Dakota (12-2-4), Colorado College (10-3-1), St. Cloud State (10-3-1) and Wisconsin (10-8-0) are already at least halfway to 20-win seasons. St. Cloud State has reached ten wins quicker this season than at any time in team history. North Dakota s No. 1 line of C Jeff Panzer (12-27=39) and wingers Bryan Lundbohm (19-14=33) and Ryan Bayda (11-19=30) has produced 102 points so far this season...panzer is the defending WCHA scoring champ. CC currently has the WCHA s top-scoring rookie in winger Peter Sejna (11-10=21 in 14 games) and the league s top-ranked goaltender overall in senior Colin Zulianello (1.41 GAA,.947 SV%). Former UMD and NHL player Jim Johnson will serve as one of two assistant coaches for the 2001 U.S. National Junior Team, which will compete in the 2001 IIHF World Junior Championship, Dec. 26, 2000-Jan. 5, 2001 in Moscow and surrounding cities of Russia. Denver s Dec. 1-2 home sweep OF RECENT NOTE over Minnesota saw the Pioneers hold the Gophers league-leading power-play scoreless in 12 chances...it was also DU s first home sweep over UM since the WCHA championship season. Minnesota-Duluth junior C Nate Anderson has nine goals in the last eight games and his 12 points this season are one more than his previous two years combined. MTU penalty-killers are on a recent 14-for-14 success rate. UND junior G Andy Kollar is between the pipes in and is in his collegiate career. Denver G Wade Dubielewicz is over his last five games and has a 1.38 GAA,.952 SV%, and two shutouts in his last four games. Wisconsin has played in 10 one-goal games since Oct. 20 with a 6-4 mark in those games. UMD has hit on 12 of its last 43 PP chances for 27.9%. SCSU G Scott Meyer, who played with the WCHA All-Star Team in Norway last August, is overall with a 1.92 GAA and.937 SV%. MSU sophomore F Jerry Cunningham has a point in seven straight games XCEL ENERGY WCHA FINAL FIVE SET FOR MARCH IN ST. PAUL The Western Collegiate Hockey Association is bringing its annual playoff championship the Xcel Energy WCHA Final Five back to St. Paul for the next three years. The Final Five will be played in the 18,064-seat Xcel Enery Center, home of the NHL s Minnesota Wild, in 2001, 2002 and St. Paul will be hosting the conference playoff championship for the ninth time in The previous eight appearances at the St. Paul Civic Center ( , 1995, 1997) drew an average of 11,474 per game. In 1999 and 2000, the Final Five was held at Target Center in Minneapolis, with last year s event drawing 49,717. TIGERS Colorado College will take a five-game undefeated streak (4-0-1) into this week s series against North Dakota. Freshman LW Peter Sejna recorded his seventh multiple-point game of the season last Saturday when he scored both goals vs Bemidji State, including the GWG on a power-play at 10:18 of the third period...he s had a hand in a team-leading four GWGs and has at least one point in 10 of 14 games...he was named WCHA Rookie of the Week for the third time on Nov (10g,7a) of his team-leading 21 points (11g,10a) have come on Saturdays, when the Tigers are 6-1. Senior RW Justin Morrison s PPG vs Air Force last Friday, followed by a pair of assists on Saturday, improved his career points total to 91 (42g,49a), most among current Tigers. Junior C Alex Kim, who had three points vs AFA including the GWG, has been involved in the game-winner in three of CC s last four victories. CC, which went 1-for-5 on the power-play both nights last weekend, has scored at least one PPG in 12 of 14 games so far this campaign...the Tigers have held their opponent scoreless on the power-play in 10 games, including both last weekend. CC owns a edge in its rivalry with Air Force after going unbeaten vs the Falcons in 23 straight (22-0-1) since suffering a 6-5 ot loss on Nov. 9, 1985, at the old Broadmoor World Arena...the Tigers have claimed 18 consecutive victories in the series. 6 MICHIGAN TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY PIONEERS HUSKIES GOLDEN GOPHERS BULLDOGS The Pioneers earned a series sweep against Minnesota last weekend, the first of the season for Denver...leading to the sweep, the Pioneers held the nation s No. 2 power-play unit scoreless as the Gophers were 0-for-12 in the series...du, on the other hand, was 3-for-13 with the man-advantage and added a SHG...it marked the first time since season that Denver skated to a sweep over UM in a home series. Denver is on a five-game unbeaten streak at during this stretch, DU has given up just seven goals, while lighting the lamp 20 times. Junior C Chris Paradise is averaging one point per game and is currently on a career-best sevengame scoring streak with 6-3=9...in his last 10 games, Paradise has 8-5=13. In last Saturday s win over UM, senior F Bjorn Engstrom notched his second three-point game in four outings...he is on a four-game scoring streak in which he has 4-4=8 and he is just nine points shy of becoming DU s 81st player to score 100 career points...fellow senior F Kelly Popadynetz is just 10 points shy of the 100-point accomplishment. DU likes to play with a lead as the Pioneers are 6-0 when leading after two periods...du is also 5-0 when it holds opponents scoreless on the power-play...and, surprisingly, the Pioneers are 4-2 when being outshot in a game. Sophomore G Wade Dubielewicz has been virtually untouchable of late...getting four consecutive starts, he has posted a 1.38 GAA and.952 SV%...he is in that span and posted his second-career shutout last Friday...vs the Gophers last weekend, Dubielewicz gave up just one goal on 62 shots for a.984 SV% and a 0.50 GAA..on the season, he has a 2.33 GAA and.916 SV%. Freshman F Connor James notched his first collegiate goal in last Saturday s victory over UM. Michigan Tech begins a sixgame stretch of non-conference games this weekend with a homeand-home series vs N. Michigan. Tech lost a pair of heart-breakers to 9th-ranked St. Cloud State last weekend, both by 4-3 counts (the first in overtime). Freshman F Bob Rangus had 1-2=3 in last weekend s two games vs SCSU...Rangus has played four career games and shows 2-2=4. Junior F Paul Cabana, who leads the club in goals with eight, had his third career two-goal game last Friday (Dec. 1) vs SCSU...it was Cabana s first multi-goal game vs a WCHA opponent. MTU scored six goals last weekend vs St. Cloud State, the most goals in a weekend series for the Huskies since scoring seven in a series vs UMD on Jan Tech has outshot opponents on six occasions this season, including four of the last six games. Senior F Tab Lardner returned to the lineup last weekend after missing the previous two games due to injury...he had an assist in Friday s (Dec. 1) game vs SCSU. Senior Jason Moilanen made his first start in goal this season last Saturday (Dec. 2) vs SCSU..he made 25 stops...moilanen started 20 games a year ago. MTU rallied from two-goal deficits on two occasions in last Friday s (Dec. 1) game vs SCSU only to lose in OT...on Saturday (Dec. 2) the Huskies fell behind 3-0 after one, rallied to tie the game at 3-3 with 1:52 left in regulation, only to have SCSU come back and score with 1:33 left to pull off the win. Freshman D Justin Brown continues to be impressive..he had an assist in each game last weekend and leads the club in plus/ minus at +9. Sophomore F Chris Durno had two goals and an assist in last weekend s series vs SCSU. MTU has held opponents without a PPG in their last 14 tries. Minnesota was dropped from first place in the WCHA after being swept by host Denver this past weekend...the 4-0 and 4-1 losses put the Golden Gopher losing streak at a season-high four games...the sweep was DU s first at home over UM since the season. In the past four games, Minnesota has scored just four goals...that is the lowest-four game total for the Gophers since January of that year, UM also had a stretch of four games with just four goals. Senior Stuart Senden missed eight games this season with a knee injury...in his three games back on the ice, he has notched a pair of goals, including UM s lone goal over the weekend on a rebound shot on Saturday night. Following a sweep of St. Cloud State two weeks ago, the Golden Gopher power-play was dominating the WCHA at a league-leading 34.8% (23-of-66)..since then, mired in a four-game losing streak, UM has failed to capitalize on its last 18 opportunities. In Minnesota s nine victories, the Gophers capitalized on 34.5% of their power-play opportunities (19-of-55), while opponents were at 7.5% (4-of-53)...in UM s five losses, the power-play is at just 4.5% (1-of-22), while opponents are at 33.3% (7-of-21)...the 0-for-9 performance last Friday night at DU was the worst since the an 0-for-8 in a 4-1 victory at UMD on Feb. 26, Head Coach Don Lucia owns a mark (.544) at Minnesota and (.624) in 13-plus seasons as a head coach...he earned his 300th career victory in the opening win vs Notre Dame. The Gophers host Quinnipiac in non-conference action Saturday night, the first-ever meeting with the Braves...UM is vs current Div. 1 teams in first-ever meetings. Minnesota-Duluth takes a oneweek hiatus from WCHA activity next weekend to host Bemidji State Univ...the Bulldogs are 5-0 lifetime vs the Beavers which includes a pair of victories one year ago (5-2 and 4-1 on Jan. 7-8) in a home-and-home series. Junior C Nate Anderson has scored all nine of his goals this year in the past eight games...anderson has racked up 12 points in one point more than this two previous collegiate seasons combined. Junior LW Tom Nelson, last week s WCHA Offensive Player of the Week, had his career-high scoring streak snapped at seven games in the 4-3 ot loss to visiting Wisconsin last Saturday...UMD s current scoring leader, Nelson has now collected at least one point in nine of his last 11 outings and now has a personal best six goals and 16 points to his credit. Sophomore G Rob Anderson, who has appeared in each of the last seven Bulldog games, established a career high for saves with 47 Saturday vs Wisconsin. UMD is in WCHA play this season with eight of those losses coming against the league s current top four teams (UND, UM and CC on the road, and UW)...those four schools are a combined overall, in the WCHA. After managing just two PPGs in 31 attempts (6.4%) during the first six games, UMD is 12 of 43 (27.9%) in that department the last eight contests...the Bulldogs also have averaged 3.9 goals a game the past eight outings compared with a 1.5 per game figure the opening six engagements. Following last Saturday s 4-3 setback to UW (in which it surrendered the game-tying goal with :32 seconds remaining and the winner with :54 seconds left in OT), UMD has managed just one victory 3-2 at SCSU on Nov. 12 in its last 11 OT games (1-7-3).

7 MAVERICKS FIGHTING SIOUX HUSKIES BADGERS Minnesota State, Mankato returns to the ice this coming weekend when the Mavericks host Alabama-Huntsville from College Hockey America in a pair of nonconference games on Dec MSU defeated 15th-ranked Vermont, 7-5, and fell 6-2 to fifthranked New Hampshire in their most recent action over the Thanksgiving weekend. Senior F Ryan Severson, who established single-game careerhighs for goals (2) and points (3) in the 7-5 win over Vermont on Nov. 25, was named to the All-Tournament Team. Senior F Jesse Rooney, who tallied his first career SHG in the win over Vermont, is MSU s leading active career scorer with 52-33=85 in 123 games...he has 3-2=5 in the last three games and is tied for second on the team with 7-5=12. Sophomore C Jerry Cunningham has now scored at least one point the last seven games and is tied for second in scoring on the team with 5-7=12. Junior F Nate Mauer, who leads MSU with 5-10=15, totalled 1-1=2 in 16 games last year. Freshman D Matt Paluczak, who made his MSU debut in the tournament at Vermont over Thanksgiving, recorded his first collegiate point when he received an assist on one of Ryan Severson s goals in the recent win over Vermont. Freshman F Tim Jackman is tied for fourth on MSU with 6-5=11 and has played in all 14 games to date. Senior D Ben Christopherson has 2-9=11 and has moved into sole possession of eighth place on MSU s career scoring list by defensemen with 70 points (9g, 61a). Senior forwards Tyler Baines and Ryan Severson both played in their 100th collegiate games over Thanksgiving in becoming the 64th and 65th MSU players to do so. Since starting the season 0-4, the Mavericks have won six of their last 10 games. North Dakota (12-2-4, WCHA) travels to Colorado Springs this weekend to face Colorado College...the series will be the final WCHA action for the Sioux before the holiday break. UND closed the book on Alaska Anchorage last weekend with 4-2 and 3-0 wins...the shutout last Saturday was the first of the season for the Sioux and the wins extended UND s unbeaten streak to 11 games (10-0-1) since Oct. 28. UND has converted on 23 of 92 power-play opportunities (25%)...UND s opponents have 14 PPGs in 86 chances (16.3%). Senior C Jeff Panzer put together a five-point (3g,2a) weekend after taking the long route in getting to Anchorage (by way of Washington, DC)..it was the 13th straight game where he has had at least a point and in 12 of those games, he has two or more points...panzer leads the nation in points (39) and assists (27)...his career points total 186 which cracks the top 10 (9th) on the alltime on the UND scoring charts. Junior G Andy Kollar has an record this season as he added two wins last weekend, 4-2, and the shutout was the second of his career...his GAA is 2.31 and he has a.924%...his career mark stands at last weekend was the first time this season that Kollar played back-to-back games in a weekend. Sophomore D Travis Roche added three assists last weekend to bring his season points total to 23...Roche has points in seven of his last nine games. Junior W Bryan Lundbohm has 19 goals and 14 assists for 33 points and is working on an 11- game point streak...he leads the nation in goals scored (19). Freshmen Quinn Fylling (goal) and Pat O Leary (assist) picked up their first points in a Sioux uniform at UAA last weekend. St. Cloud State s two-game sweep at Michigan Tech on Dec. 1-2 marked the team s first wins in Houghton since Nov., Senior G Scott Meyer has been a key to the Huskies success this season...not only is his GAA under 2.00, he has already charted 357 saves this season...at MTU, Meyer was stellar with a season-high 34 saves on both nights...on Dec. 2, Meyer was particularly tough down the home stretch with 19 big saves in the third period alone..he owns a record this season. F Mark Hartigan moved his team goal-scoring lead to 10 this season with a goal on each night of the MTU series...hartigan has 18 points this season (10g,8a) for the Huskies and is the team leader in that category. F Jon Cullen had another solid weekend with a pair of goal at MTU...Cullen has nine points this season (4g,5a)...his GWG on Dec. 1 in overtime marked the second consecutive game that SCSU s game-winner came from Cullen and he now has four GWGs in his career at SCSU. Senior F Ritchie Larson, who hadn t score a point this season, moved onto the scoring list with an assist on Dec. 1 and the gamewinning goal on Dec. 2...the GWG was his third at SCSU. The Huskies completed a fivegame road swing with their series at MTU...SCSU now returns to the National Hockey Center for four consecutive WCHA games and an exhibition vs the Russia Select Team...SCSU is on the road. The Huskies moved their alltime Div. 1 record to since , all under coach Craig Dahl. Frosh Andy Lundbohm scored his second goal of the season in just his fifth game (vs MTU). SCSU has reached 10 wins quicker than any year in history...the previous best start was in Wisconsin swept at Minnesota- Duluth last weekend by the scores of 5-4 and 4-3 (ot)...the games marked the 9th and 10th onegoal games the UW has played in since Oct the Badgers are in those contests. UW netminder Graham Melanson won his 68th and 69th career games last weekend to move into sole possession of second place on Wisconsin s all-time goaltender win list. Sophomore F Dany Heatley scored three goals and assisted on three others at UMD over the weekend...along with linemates Matt Murray (2-3=5) and Matt Doman (1-2=3), the trio combined for 6-8=14 in the sweep. The win last Saturday was the first Badger win over a UMD team in overtime since The Badgers travel to St. Cloud State next weekend for a Friday- Saturday series against the Huskies...the UW is vs SCSU in St. Cloud in the last four games...in the series history, the Badgers lead, in games played at the National Hockey Center, the Cardinal and White are last year, the UW was vs SCSU, splitting the series in St. Cloud...the UW won 4-3 (ot) in the first game and was shutout 3-0 in the series finale.
