1 ****PMHA EXECUTIVE NEWS**** We are urgently looking for a new 1 st VP for PMHA. Our President has recently stepped down. Our 1st VP is willing to be acting president until the AGM in April (as per PMHA by-law Article 2c ii). However, this will leave us with a position of 1st VP to fill. If you are interested in helping our association and would like to join our executive, please me and I will fill you in on what is involved. This is not a busy time for this position so it would be a great time to come see what it is all about. As with all positions, when someone takes over for another, that position is up for reelection at the AGM in the spring. Our next executive meeting is Tuesday January :00pm. Thanks everyone. Janine Reedeker Secretary secretary@pmha.bc.ca PMHA ANNUAL POND HOCKEY MARK YOUR CALENDARS and come out and have some fun!!! 2 NEWS AROUND PMHA TEAMS * Bantam A finished 3 rd in their pool in the Rick LaPointe Tourney. They lost to Racquet Club in a Shoot out in the final. On a high note Nate Looysen scored 3 hat tricks only to have his dad Spencer Looysen cough up a new pair of skates. Congratulations Nathan on your new skates! Sometime even the most far fetched can be achieved. Poor Spencer... Bantam A donated part of their winnings at the Salmon Kings to the Teddy Bear toss. C fax will have them on the radio soon. *Micah Hart is heading up to the U 16 try outs in Port Alberni Jan 2-3. Congratulations Micah! *Atom Jamboree January *IP 3 on 3 Jamboree Sunday January 2 nd 2011 Novice 1 will be playing their 1st (hopefully annual) 3 on 3 tournament on January 2nd from 10am to noon at Panorama. The kids will get three games each and finish with the famous cookie shoot out! We have many great sponsors for the event: Itgroove Business Technology Solutions, Aaron Activity Handy Man Services, HRTech Solutions, Red Barn Market, and Dixon Networks Corp. Each player will get to take home their PMHA keepsake jersey! A special thank you to some of the Bantam A team for coming out and helping the kids and giving the coaches a day to sit back and just watch their children play hockey!!! *Come out and support our Bantam team during the Xmas Tournament Dec at Panorama! 8 teams have entered and there is a great concession and lots of raffles. December 28 after the tournament there will be a skills competition. *Tonight's winners of the Bantam A Christmas Cheer Raffle were; -From the Frampton book...1st Prize... Janet Fontaine -From the Affleck Book...2nd Prize... Mike Demers -From the Hart Book (an extra book) 3rd Prize... Khrista Rolleston Congratulations to you and your families! THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR 2010/2011 SPONSORS
3 Important message A NOTE TO ALL PARENTS AND FANS Please remember that players and most officials are only kids. Negative criticism is not appropriate! The kids are there to play hockey and have fun. Our linesmen and refs are teenagers and not pro hockey players. They are doing the best they can and are certainly aware of the many pairs of adult eyes watching them. Please do not yell at them, it only makes things worse. That could be your child officiating one day and think how you would want people to treat them. PMHA has recently received a few concerns about the behavior of our team parents in our own rink as well as on the road. Please remember that we have a zero tolerance policy for abusive, loud, angry or disrespectful behavior at hockey games. This is a consistent policy in place at Minor Hockey Associations all across Canada. There are a number of reasons why this is a serious issue: 1. Abusive behavior results in many young officials deciding to quit. This means you may not get refs with the seniority you might want for your level of hockey. 2. Abusive behavior sets a poor example for our youth, and they will model it. 3. Abusive behavior interferes with player and spectator enjoyment of the game. 4. Abusive behavior gives PMHA a bad reputation. This can be reflected in loss of respect and cooperation from other associations and VIAHA, and it also means that refs will not want to be at PMHA games. Anyone demonstrating this kind of behavior will be approached and given a yellow card. If the behavior persists they will be asked not to be present at games. If this request is not respected, they will be given a refund for the balance of the season and their player will be removed from the roster. Imagine explaining that to your child. Please let s all work together to ensure that games are conducted in a respectful manner and our kids continue to enjoy the best game on earth! Tim Tanton Acting President
4 PMHA DEVELOPMENT Monday Development Sessions Through January, all PMHA teams will have the opportunity to attend a Monday evening development session run by Power Unlimited. Two teams will be invited to each ice session. These sessions are paid for with your registration fees, so please take the time to attend. Weekend Morning Ice Slots The association has been divided into 2 groups for the weekend morning ice slots run by Jeff Birrell. There is one ice slot available each weekend, so the Novice/Atom group alternates with the PeeWee/Bantam/Midget group. The January schedule for these sessions will be posted on the website soon. Coach Development On November 29, we had a round table coaches meeting that included several high profile coaching mentors including Greg Batters (VIJHL President), Len Barry Sr., Mark Morrison (Salmon Kings head coach), Mark Van Helvoirt (Victoria Cougars Jr. B head coach), Suneil Karod (Victoria Cougars Jr. B asst. coach), and Dale Purinton (Cowichan Capitals Jr. A head coach). It was a great opportunity to discuss many different ideas and issues with experienced coaches. It was also a chance to develop meaningful contacts with knowledgeable mentors. We will be setting up some more coach development sessions in the New Year. PMHA GOALIE DEVELOPMENT WITH JASON REIMER PMHA is proud to offer 4 nights of Goalie Development this year with Jason Reimer of Tactical Net Training and Sports Conditioning. Jason has 5 years of goalie coaching experience including being a goaltender consultant for Spencer Hockey Academy, Sooke Minor Hockey Association, Belmont Hockey Academy, and Juan De Fuca Minor Hockey Association. He is also currently the goaltender coach for the South Island Thunderbirds Major Midget Team. With a passion to develop goaltenders to their full potential, Jason brings an mulit-pronged approach to the position: believing Goalies are made of 1/3rd technical, 1/3rd physical, and 1/3rd mental abilities, his focus is to key in on these assets in each goaltenders game to make them stronger and more consistent. Jason states "every goaltender I coach, I train to be smart and knowledgeable, to believe in what and why they use certain tactics in certain situations, to learn to take pride in their position. Each developmental ice that I run, I use the 3 ingredients that make up a goaltenders game, technical, physical, and mental. These ingredients equal confidence, which in turn, will lead to performance." Each goalie development night is broken down into 3 sessions; Novice/Atom Rec, Atom Rep/PeeWee, and Bantam/Midget, allowing Jason and his assistants to focus on the different playing levels and abilities. This is also a great opportunity for coaches to come out and see what drills they can incorporate into their own team practices to benefit their goalies. It also brings an opportunity for older kids to come out and take shots on our young developing goalies which benefit the association as a whole as mentorships form. We have had goalie development sessions on Nov 15 and Dec 13 with Jason and look forward to 2 more sessions in the New Year on January 10 and March 7.

7 A LOOK AT SOME OF OUR PMHA COACHES FROM NOVICE Team: Novice 1 Black Ninja s Team: Novice 2A Avril Morrison was born in Victoria on June 17 th and has been coaching 3 years at Peninsula. Avril enjoys most about coaching, when a player finally masters a tricky skill, like stopping on their difficult side and seeing the excitement on their face. She finds the hardest part about coaching, keeping warm on the ice! Avril s most memorable coaching moment was winning second place at the Pearkes New Year s Tournament with her Midget C boy s team. Avril s favorite NHL team is the Vancouver Canucks. Avril started playing hockey in Atom for Peninsula and both her parents became involved as the team manager. She has loved the sport ever since! Sarah Smith was born in Abbotsford, in 1990 and this is her first year coaching. Sarah enjoys most about coaching, is seeing the kids learn and improve and hearing their laughter! The hardest part about coaching for Sarah is getting the kids to listen when it is the last thing they want to do! Sarah s most memorable coaching moment was when her team had a 5-5 tie to Kerry Park. One of the girls on her team got a hat trick! Sarah said She told me she was going to get 3 goals and she did! Sarah s favorite NHL team is Vancouver Canucks. Growing-up Sarah played minor hockey in Calgary, Victoria (mostly Peninsula) and Southern Alberta at Warner Hockey School. Sarah s got involved in hockey when her older brother wanted to play so they put him in. They had put Sarah in figure skating and when she saw him playing hockey she decided she wanted to do that instead of figure skating and the rest is history! A SPECIAL EVENT WITH GEORGE LARAQUE S Georges Laraque's visits Panorama Arena! Retired NHL player Georges Laraque's visited Panorama Arena on Nov. 26, 27, He dropped the puck for the Panthers game on Friday night and George also met with the Atom girl s team before the Panthers game on Friday. George offered a free public skate and autograph session from 1-2:20pm on Saturday, Nov 27. George also met with the Novice 4 and Atom A team for a Q and A session. Exciting weekend for all the PMHA players!
