5 Kevin M. White Vice President & Director of Athletics Adjunct Professor of Business Administration St. Joseph s College, 1972 Kevin M. White was named Duke University s vice president and director of athletics on May 31, He also serves as an adjunct professor of business administration at the university. White, 60, joined the Duke family after leading Notre Dame s athletics program to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom from He also has held a number of prominent national leadership roles within intercollegiate athletics, including his service in as president of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and in as president of the Division I-A Athletic Directors Association. Guided by the Strategic Plan that was approved by Duke s Board of Trustees in April of 2008, White made an immediate impact on Duke Athletics. In addition to leading the department to unprecedented success in competition, he reshaped the organization into a more efficient and modern department; strengthened ties to both campus and community constituents though consistent outreach efforts; successfully oversaw Duke s fundraising efforts during an economic downturn; completed partnerships with major corporate entities to enhance revenue streams; commissioned a master facilities plan to position Duke well into the 21st Century; and emphasized a stronger commitment to the university s intramural, club and recreational sports programs. Since White s arrival, Duke has captured three NCAA Championships women s tennis in 2009, men s basketball in 2010 and men s lacrosse in 2010 and nine ACC titles (three in 2011). On the strength of 14 teams participating in NCAA Championship competition and robust finishes in several sports, Duke ranked fifth in the 2011 Learfield Sports Directors Cup standings, which determine an institution s all-around strength in intercollegiate athletics. The fifth-place finish matched Duke s best in the rankings and its points earned were the most in program history. The fifth-place showing marked the eighth consecutive year that Duke has ended among the nation s top 20 programs. In White s three years at Duke, the Blue Devils placed 17th (2009), 10th (2010) and fifth (2011) in the Directors Cup standings. Twenty-three Blue Devil teams ranked among the nation s top 10 teams during the past three seasons with six men s basketball (2009, 2010, 2011), men s lacrosse (2010) and women s tennis (2009, 2010) reaching No. 1. In all, 42 Duke teams advanced to NCAA postseason competition the last three seasons. Individually, 89 student-athletes earned All-America, 159 All-ACC and 103 All-Region or District honors the past three years. During White s tenure, Duke boasts seven NCAA individual champions in Juliet Bottorff (outdoor track and field 10k in 2011), Mallory Cecil (women s tennis in 2009), Abby Johnston (three-meter diving in 2011), Nick McCrory (platform diving in 2010 and 2011), and Becca Ward (women s fencing, saber in 2009 and 2011). In 2011, Duke celebrated four individual NCAA and 11 individual ACC titles. Academically, Duke teams continued strong performances under White. In the 2011 spring semester, 25 of 26 Blue Devil varsity teams earned grade point averages of 3.0 or better after 24 of 26 teams achieved the same during the fall of In two key elements in tracking a department s academic success, Duke ranked among the nation s best again. Duke posted a 97% Graduation Success Rate (GSR) and 14 teams achieved a 100% GSR. Fifteen Blue Devil teams were ranked in the top 10% of their respective sport in the most recent Academic Performance Rate (APR) Report, including the men s basketball team that was only one of four national champions from the season included on the list. Duke was one of only three football programs in the ACC to qualify for this recognition and the 95 percent rate posted by the Blue Devils was the second-highest among FBS teams in the nation. Individually in 2011, senior Dorian Cohen (men s fencing) received an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship (one of 26 awarded nationally), while Allie Speidel (women s swimming and diving) was awarded one of 31 Marshall Scholarships in the United States. Three Duke student-athletes were selected CoSIDA Academic All-America, while 16 others received National Scholar-Athlete or Scholar All-America accolades. During the 2010 fall semester, 469 student-athletes posted a 3.0 grade point average or better. That number was 462 during the 2011 spring semester. In White s three-year tenure, former women s tennis player Parker Goyer won a Rhodes Scholarship (2009), while track athlete Sally Liu (2009) and Speidel (2011) earned prestigious Marshall Scholarships. Under White, Duke has continued its focus on outreach to the local community. Modeling the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills program s commitment to service, learning projects and outreach, close to 500 Duke student-athletes across the department participated in a combined effort of more than 2,000 community service hours (an increase of nearly 600 hours based on activities and events coordinated through and reported to Student-Athlete Development during the year). White s commitment to the mission of the university remains clear. In May 2011, Duke Athletics announced that a portion of ticket sales from Blue Devil regular season home sporting events will be directed to the Duke University Libraries. Per White s vision, the Duke Athletics Library Fund will generate significant unrestricted revenue for the Duke University Libraries to support teaching and research across the institution. In , nine facility projects were completed, impacting most of Duke s 26 varsity sports. By August 2011, the new Duke Multi-Purpose Fieldhouse, an 80,000 square-foot facility that will house a 120-yard playing surface for the school s football program and other on-campus recreational activities, will be completed. White, who holds a Ph.D. in education, has taught graduate-level classes since 1982 and currently teaches a sports business course in Duke s Fuqua School of Business as part of Duke s MBA program. In August 2003, SI.com (the Sports Illustrated web site) listed White, then at Notre Dame, third in its rankings of the most powerful people in college football. In January 2004, The Sporting News listed him in its Power 100 as third among five names in the front office category (and the lone college athletics director among the 100). White previously served on numerous NCAA committees, including being an ex-officio member of the NCAA Committee on Academic Performance and a member of its Penalty and Rewards subcommittee. For several years, he was a representative with the football Bowl Championship Series. Additionally, White was part of the NCAA Coalition on Intercollegiate Athletics (COIA) that dealt with academics, fiscal reform and student-athlete well-being. Currently, he is the secretary of NCAA Football, a non-profit corporation that acts as the collective voice to promote college football, and serves on the Black Coaches and Administrators Board of Directors. Given his background and success, it is not surprising that 20 current or former directors of athletics were mentored by White. That impressive list includes Jim Sterk of Washington State and San Diego State, Tom Boeh of Ohio University and Fresno State, Ian McCaw of Northeastern, Massachusetts and Baylor, Bruce Van De Velde of Utah State, Iowa State and Louisiana Tech, Herman Frazier previously of Hawaii, Rudy Keeling formerly of Emerson and now commissioner of the Eastern College Athletic (ECAC), Scott Devine of St. Mary s College (Md.), Tom Collins of Ball State, Tim Van Alstine of Western Illinois, Mark Wilson of Tennessee Tech, Bubba Cunningham of Ball State and Tulsa, Sandy Barbour (who followed him at Tulane) of California-Berkeley, Jim Phillips of Northern Illinois and Northwestern, Bernard Muir of Georgetown and Delaware, Sandy Hatfield Clubb of Drake, Vic Cegles of Long Beach State, Norwood Teague of Virginia Commonwealth, Bob Bierie previously of Loras College, Greg Capell previously of Loras College, and Boo Corrigan of Army. Prior to joining Notre Dame in 2000, White served as athletic director at Arizona State University, Tulane University, the University of Maine and Loras College in Iowa, where he originated the National Catholic Basketball Tournament. Before becoming an administrator, White served as head track and field coach at Southeast Missouri State ( ) and assistant cross country and track and field coach at Central Michigan ( ). He began his coaching career at Gulf High School in New Port Richey, Fla., coaching cross country and track and assisting in football and wrestling. White earned his Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University in 1983 with an emphasis on higher education administration. In 1985, he completed postdoctoral work at Harvard University s Institute for Educational Management. He earned his master s degree in athletics administration from Central Michigan University in 1976 and his bachelor s degree in business administration in 1972 from St. Joseph s College in Rensselaer, Ind., where he also competed as a sprinter. White and his wife, Jane, a former college track and field coach, have five children and nine grandchildren. 3

7 One of the top coaches in college lacrosse, John Danowski has helped lead the Duke men s lacrosse team to unprecedented success during his five-year tenure. Danowski was introduced as Duke s eighth head men s lacrosse coach on July 21, 2006 and quickly led the Blue Devils to some of the most successful lacrosse seasons in school history and ultimately to the 2010 NCAA Championship. Danowski will begin the 2012 season needing just one win to reach the 300-victory benchmark. He will be among great company as only two active coaches own 300-plus victories. He currently ranks tied for third in career victories and is ninth in career win percentage. In Danowski s five years at the helm of the Blue Devil lacrosse program, he has compiled an impressive record in leading Duke to four ACC regular season titles and three ACC tournament titles, five appearances in the national semifinals, two in the NCAA title match twice and ultimately the 2010 national title. A winner of nearly 81 percent of his games at Duke, the individual awards Blue Devil players have garnered is equally impressive. In only four seasons, Danowski helped mentor 31 All-America selections, 15 All-ACC choices, two Tewaaraton Trophy winners, two USILA Attackman of the Year award recipients, a USILA Defenseman of the Year, and eight USILA Scholar All-America picks. Under the keen eye of Danowski in 2011, the Blue Devils advanced to their fifth straight and seventh national semifinals and finished with a 14-6 record. Duke captured the ACC regular season title, going 3-0, which included a win over future NCAA Champion Virginia. The Blue Devils defeated Notre Dame, 7-5, to move into the NCAA Semifinal against Maryland. He was named the ACC Coach of the Year for the second time in his career after capturing the regular season crown. Danowski mentored two All-ACC selections in CJ Costabile and Jordan Wolf, while six Blue Devils captured All-America recognition. Justin Turri earned second team honors and Costabile, Zach Howell and Tom Montelli garnered third team accolades. Wolf and Robert Rotanz both brought in honorable mention nods. Off the field, Duke once again was the leader in the ACC. The Blue Devils led all squads with 14 players on the All-ACC Academic Team. Overall 27 players were named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll, nearly twice as many as the next closest ACC men s lacrosse program. Howell and Montelli both were selected as USILA Scholar All-Americans, marking the fifth straight year Duke has had at least one recipient of the award. In 2010, Danowski and the Blue Devils etched their names in the NCAA record book when they captured the program s first NCAA Championship with a 6-5 overtime victory over Notre Dame. The preseason No. 1 pick in 2010, Duke finished with a 16-4 record, winning 14 of its final 15 games. Under Danowski s leadership in the NCAA Tournament, the Blue Devils outscored their opponents and outlasted both Virginia and Notre Dame in heart-stopping one-goal victories on championship weekend. Much as he had done the previous three seasons, Danowski masterfully guided the 2010 squad through the ups and downs of a season and tutored some of the top players in Division I lacrosse. Under his watchful eye, senior attackman Ned Crotty cemented himself as one of the top Blue Devil players in program history en route to winning the 2010 Tewaaraton Trophy, the top prize in college lacrosse, and being selected No. 1 in the Major League Lacrosse draft. In all, Danowski coached five All-America selections in 2010 with Crotty taking home first team honors for the second straight seasons. The Blue Devils landed three players on the All- ACC squad and five on the NCAA All-Tournament Team under the longtime coach s tutelage. In the annual Major League Lacrosse draft, Duke set a benchmark with three players going among the top four picks as Crotty went No. 1, Max Quinzani at No. 3 and Parker McKee in the No. 4 spot. Arguably, one of Danowski s best coaching performances came in the 2009 season after the departure of the NCAA leading scoring duo of Matt Danowski and Zack Greer. The Blue Devils surprised some as they ran their way to a 15-4 record, an ACC title and a bid to the NCAA Semifinals. Under the guidance of Danowski, Crotty introduced himself as one of the top attackers in the country as he garnered the USILA s Attackman of the Year award as well as the ACC Player of the Year honor. Danowski mentored five All-Americas, two All-ACC honorees as well as the USILA s pick for attackman of the year in The squad was also highly successful in the classroom as 12 players earned a place on the All-ACC Academic Team. Twenty-eight players achieved a 3.0 grade point average for the academic year to lead all ACC lacrosse programs and Max Quinzani picked up his second career ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America award. In 2008, he guided the team to an 18-2 record, the ACC regular season and tournament championships and the squad s second consecutive appearance in the national semifinals. He coached nine All-Americas, including three first-team honorees, the USILA Player of the Year as well as the USILA s picks for attackman and defenseman of the year. The Blue Devils achieved an equal amount of success in the classroom under Danowski s watch as 15 players earned a spot on the ACC All-Academic Team and Quinzani collected ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All- 5

11 Ron Caputo Chris Gabrielli Assistant Coach Scranton 91 Fifth Season Assistant Coach Massachusetts 01 Sixth Season Ron Caputo is in his fifth season as a member of the Duke lacrosse coaching staff. In his four seasons with the Blue Devils, Duke has posted a record, captured two ACC titles and advanced to the NCAA Semifinals four times and ultimately captured the 2010 national championship. Working closely with the faceoff specialists and the midfield, Duke has won 53.1 percent ( ) of its restarts the past four seasons. In 2011, Caputo helped mentor freshman Brendan Fowler to a.555 faceoff percentage, one of the highest percentages in the conference. This past season Duke ranked sixth in scoring offense with 12.2 goals per game and had three midfielders with at least 25 points on the year. Midfielder Justin Turri earned USILA All-America second team honors, while Robert Rotanz captured an honorable mention nod. In 2010, the Blue Devils won 54.5 percent of their restarts to rank 13th nationally, while senior Sam Payton was 14th individually. Offensively, Duke ranked second in scoring offense with goals per game. The Blue Devils also ranked second in assists per game (8.35) and points per game (21.8) under Caputo s watch. In Caputo s inaugural season with the Blue Devils, Duke led the nation in scoring offense with 15.2 goals per game. The squad won an NCAA record 18 games and advanced to the NCAA Semifinals for the second consecutive season under his assistance as the Blue Devils featured the top two individual scorers in NCAA history in Matt Danowski and Zack Greer. Prior to his arrival at Duke, Caputo spent four seasons ( ) on the Hofstra University men s lacrosse staff as an assistant coach. He joined the Pride in 2004 as a volunteer assistant coach for current Blue Devil head coach John Danowski, who served as the head coach at Hofstra from , as the Pride compiled an record of and a 14-9 mark in Colonial Athletic play, during his tenure. In 2006, Caputo worked alongside Danowski to help lead Hofstra to an record of 17-2, a mark that included a perfect 6-0 mark versus CAA opponents, and a final national ranking of No. 2. The Pride won the CAA Championship and reached the NCAA Quarterfinals, while setting a school record for wins and winning percentage (.895). Before his stint at Hofstra, Caputo served as a varsity assistant lacrosse coach from at Syosset (N.Y.) High School, where he coached Blue Devil teammates and brothers Dan and Chris Loftus. A 1991 graduate of the University of Scranton, Caputo led Syosset to three county semifinal appearances and one Nassau County Championship game berth. Caputo is married to the former Randi Heller of Farmingdale, N.Y., and the couple has four children, Samantha, Owen, Jake and Megan. The family resides in Holly Springs, N.C. Chris Gabrielli is in his sixth season on the staff and works primarily with the Blue Devils defensive unit. Over the past five seasons, Gabrielli has helped the Blue Devils become one of the top defensive teams in the country. Annually one of the stingiest defenses in Division I lacrosse, Duke was among the top 10 scoring defenses in 2007 and 2008, finished the 2009 ranked 18th in goals against average and was 17th in In 2011, the Blue Devils allowed 9.1 goals per game, while starting a freshman and sophomore on close defense and a sophomore goaltender. Under the leadership of Gabrielli, Duke held teams to single digit scoring in 10 contests. Senior Tom Montelli earned USILA All-America third team recognition under Gabrielli s tutelage and ranked second in the ACC and 44th nationally in caused turnovers. Longstick midfielder CJ Costabile also picked up USILA All-America third team honors. Under the watchful eye of Gabrielli in 2010, defensemen Parker McKee and Michael Manley garnered All-America recognition for their efforts. Manley was selected to the NCAA All-Tournament Team after helping the Blue Devils to its first national title. In 2009, with Gabrielli s help, McKee captured second team All- America recognition as Duke advanced to the NCAA semifinals for the third straight season. In Gabrielli s second season, the Duke defense led the ACC and ranked eighth nationally by allowing 7.30 goals per game. He mentored three USILA All-Americas, including first team honoree and USILA National Defenseman of the Year Nick O Hara. In 2007, the Blue Devils Gabrielli helped guide four Blue Devils to All-America awards. Gabrielli spent the 2006 season as an assistant coach at Butler where he served as the recruiting coordinator while working primarily with the defense. Under his mentorship, three Butler defensemen earned All-GWLL honors. Gabrielli was a member of the coaching staff at his alma mater, Massachusetts, from , helping the Minutemen to a record with two NCAA quarterfinal berths. Gabrielli was a member of the practice squad for the Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse during the 2004 season before being drafted again by the Cannons in the 2005 Supplemental Draft. In 2004, he co-founded the Mid-Summer Classic, a high school lacrosse tournament currently held on the UMass campus. A four-year letterman as a defenseman at Massachusetts, Gabrielli picked up 127 ground balls and five assists in his career. As a senior in 2001, he captained the Minutemen to a 12-2 record and a share of the ECAC championship while earning second team all-conference and first team All-New England honors. A two-time winner of the Eric Sopracasa Heart and Soul Award, an honor presented annually to the UMass player who displays the most leadership and dedication to the program, Gabrielli went to play in the 2001 North-South All-Star game and the MLL Major League Challenge. A native of Farmingdale, N.Y., Gabrielli graduated from Massachusetts in 2001 with a degree in sport management. He resides in Durham with his wife Candice and their daughter Grace. 9

12 John Galloway Volunteer Assistant Coach Syracuse 11 First Season Carl Christensen Strength & Conditioning Chadron State College 03 Fourth Season John Galloway joined the Duke men s lacrosse coaching staff in the fall of 2011 after a heralded career at Syracuse University. Galloway will work closely with the goalkeepers and defense. Galloway, a two-time first team All-American goaltender for the Orange, departed Syracuse as one of the most decorated players in program history. In 2011, he was the winner of the Ensign C. Markland Kelly Jr. Award as the nation s best goalkeeper. He also became just the second goalkeeper in history to be named a finalist for the Tewaaraton Trophy, lacrosse s highest honor. The native of Syracuse, N.Y., finished his career with a NCAA record 59 victories and played a NCAA record 3,776 minutes throughout his four seasons. He ranks seventh in the NCAA records book and is tops among Orange goalkeepers in goals against average (7.33). He also holds the Syracuse record for NCAA Tournament goals against average (7.20) and is seventh on the all-time saves list with 601. The only goalie in NCAA history to win a NCAA title as a freshman and sophomore, Galloway is the lone goalkeeper in Syracuse history to earn first team All-America recognition twice. In 2008, he became the fifth true freshman goalie in NCAA history to lead his team to a national championship as the Orange won a school-record 16 games. Galloway was equally successful off the field. He was a two-time national Academic All-America choice and was a finalist for the Lowe s Senior CLASS Award. He earned a spot on the SU Athletic Director s Honor Roll in all eight semesters and was named to the BIG EAST All-Academic team as a junior and senior. Carl Christensen joined the Duke strength and conditioning staff in January of He came to Duke after spending nearly three years as the Assistant Director of Strength and Conditioning at Missouri State. At Duke, Christensen is specifically responsible for the design, implementation, and evaluation of the strength and conditioning programs for the men and women s swimming and diving, women s rowing, men s lacrosse and men s and women s golf programs. Prior to arriving at Missouri State, Christensen held a similar position at the University of Arkansas. He worked with the Razorbacks softball, soccer, tennis, and swimming teams. Christensen served as a graduate assistant at University of Wyoming where he worked closely with the swimming and diving and golf teams and assisted with various other squads. A 2003 graduate of Chadron State College in Chadron, Neb., Christensen was a two-year letterwinner for the Eagles football squad. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2003 and went on to get his master s from the University of Wyoming. He is certified by the NSCA and USAW organizations. Jay Bissette Equipment Coordinator East Carolina 07 Third Season Joe Ferraro Athletic Trainer Guilford College 93 17th Season Jay Bissette enters his third season as the equipment coordinator for the men s lacrosse team. Bissette spent the 2007 season as an intern in the Duke football equipment office and has been the Head Equipment Manager for Duke s West Campus since A native of Wilson, N.C., Bissette earned a degree in management of recreation facilities and services from East Carolina in He worked as a student manager in the equipment room at East Carolina for four years and was the head student manager for the 2006 season. Joe Ferraro, a member of the Duke Athletic Department for 17 years, serves as the athletic trainer for the Blue Devil men s lacrosse program. A native of Cockeysville, Md., Ferraro handles the health care for Duke s men s lacrosse, men and women s swimming and diving, and men and women s golf. He joined the Duke Athletic Training Staff in the fall of 1995 after serving as the Acting Head Athletic Trainer at Guilford College in the spring of Ferraro earned a bachelor of science degree in justice & policy studies from Guilford College in 1993, and went on to earn a master of science degree in injury prevention & management from Springfield College in

13 Jeff Howser Speed & Agility Coach Duke 71 11th Season Meredith Rieder Assistant Sports Information Director Denison 02 Fourth Season Former ACC champion and All-America Jeff Howser is in his 11th season as Duke s speed and conditioning coach. A 1971 graduate of Duke, Howser was a six-time ACC champion. Howser was named as one of the ACC s top 50 track athletes of all-time in He went on to earn a bronze medal at the 1969 World Championships in the 110-meter high hurdles and was an alternate on the 1968 U.S. Olympic Team. Howser ran on the international level from , was a four-time U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier and two-time U.S. Olympic Trials finalist. Howser served previous track and field assistant coaching stints at Florida ( ), N.C. State ( ), Duke ( & ) and North Carolina ( ). Meredith Rieder joined the Duke staff in August of 2008 and serves as an Assistant Director of Sports Information. Her primary responsibilities include handling media relations for the men s soccer, wrestling, women s tennis and men s lacrosse programs. Rieder came to Duke after serving as an Athletic Communications Assistant at Colgate University for three years. A native of Columbus, Ohio, she handled the day-to-day media relations duties for the volleyball, women s basketball, men s lacrosse and men and women s track and cross country teams at Colgate. She also served as the Assistant Director of Athletic Communications for three years at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, N.Y. Rieder graduated cum laude from Denison University in 2002 with a degree in communication and French. A four-year member of the women s soccer team at Denison, she was a four-time all-region selection and earned All-America honors as a senior. She helped guide the Big Red to four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. Rieder is a current member of the CoSIDA Academic All-America committee. Khary McGhee Academic Coordinator Rutgers 97 Second Season Erin Stephenson Administrative Assistant Hartwick 04 Fifth Season Khary McGhee joined the Duke staff in August of 2010 and serves as an academic coordinator in the Academic department. McGhee came to Duke after serving one year as a Compliance Officer at UNC-Pembroke. He previously worked 11 years as a sports journalist. A native of Pennsauken, N.J., McGhee graduated from Rutgers University in 1997 and later earned a master s degree in physical education from UNC-Pembroke. Erin Stephenson joined the Duke athletics staff in October of 2007 and serves as an Administrative Assistant for the Blue Devil men s lacrosse program. A native of Maine, N.Y., Stephenson played both field hockey and lacrosse at Hartwick College before graduating in 2004 with a bachelor of arts degree in history. 48 Men s Lacrosse in Duke Hall of Fame Charles Gilfillan One of Corrigan s teammates, Charles Gilfillan, also was inducted into the Duke Sports Hall of Fame. Gilfillan, a defenseman, is one of three twotime first team All-Americas in Duke Lacrosse history. He earned first team honors in 1948 and 1951, along with a third team merit in During his senior year, 1951, the squad compiled a 6-1 record to finish as the national championship runner-up to ACC rival Virginia. Gene Corrigan Duke Lacrosse saw its second member inducted into the Duke Sports Hall of Fame in 1991, when Gene Corrigan received the prestigious honor. A member of the 1951 Duke lacrosse team, Gene Corrigan was well known as a driving force in the shaping of intercollegiate athletics as both the Commissioner of the Atlantic Coast and as President of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Corrigan, who retired from both positions in 1997, was the third commissioner in the 45-year history of the league. Corrigan brought progressive philosophies and ideas to the ACC and helped solidify the conference s reputation as one of the nation s leaders. Upon his graduation from Duke in 1952, Corrigan, a lacrosse All-America, began his career teaching Latin, English and history while coaching basketball, football and lacrosse at St. Paul s School in Baltimore. The Baltimore native then moved on to occupy almost every desk imaginable in athletics. He served as the lacrosse coach at Washington & Lee, the Sports Information Director and Director of Athletic Programs at Virginia and Athletic Director at Notre Dame before assuming the ACC post in Jack Persons The first athlete of the lacrosse fraternity to be inducted into the Hall of Fame is former head coach Jack Persons. Persons started out as Duke s swimming coach in At the age of 20, he was the youngest head coach at a major university in the nation. When he retired from coaching 45 years later, he was one of the most admired men in his field. Along the way, his teams recorded 207 victories in 378 meets, including undefeated seasons in 1933 and Person s teams also captured one Southern Championship, had seven runner-up finishes and were tops among Big Five teams from Persons also had a storied career coaching the Blue Devil lacrosse team from He directed Duke to one of the greatest upsets in collegiate lacrosse history in 1946 when the Blue Devils shocked national power Maryland, In the 1950s, his team was a national contender on a yearly basis with the 1951 squad finishing second in the country. In all, Persons had three teams finish the year ranked among the top-ten teams in the nation, and his 1954 squad won the inaugural ACC Championship. In addition to his coaching duties, Persons taught physical education at Duke and was a pioneer of swimming in North Carolina. He served as the chairman of the Durham County Red Cross life saving and water safety units. Persons graduated from Duke in 1933, and was inducted into the Hall in
