2 2009 Notebook Ryan McFadyen returns for his fifth season after joining the football team this past fall. He saw action in all 12 games, playing primarily on special teams. Parker McKee earned Preseason AllAmerica third team recognition from Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Yearbook. Duke also will look to Mike Catalino for production after tallying 16 points a year ago, while Terrence Molinari will add depth to the midfield lines. Sophomore Justin Turri will provide more fire power to the midfield after missing his rookie season to injury, while junior transfer Will McKee also has the potential to be a solid scorer for the Blue Devils.

Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic The Blue Devils will compete in the first of three major lacrosse events this year... Nine at Hofstra, Two at Duke 99 All-Conference Selections...90 at Hofstra, Nine at Duke John Danowski was introduced as Duke s eighth head men s lacrosse coach on July 21, Danowski enters his third year at the helm of the Blue Devil lacrosse program after helping Duke to two of its finest lacrosse seasons in school history. In just two seasons in Durham, Danowski lays claim to a 35-5 record, two ACC regular season and tournament titles, and two appearances in the national semifinals and the title tilt once. In 2008, he guided the team to an 18-2 overall record, the ACC regular season and tournament championships and the squad s second consecutive appearance in the national semifinals. He mentored nine All-Americas, including three firstteam honorees, the USILA Player of the Year as well as the USILA s picks for attackman and defenseman of the year. The Blue Devils achieved an equal amount of success in the classroom under Danowski s watch as 15 players earned a spot on the ACC All-Academic Team and Max Quinzani collected ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honors. Duke also garnered the ACC Sportsmanship award during the 2008 season. In his first year at the helm of the Blue Devil program, Danowski guided Duke to the finest season in school history. The Blue Devils went 17-3, captured both the ACC and regular season championships, earned the program s first number one seed in the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the national title game. For his efforts, he was named the ACC Coach of the Year as well as the Person of the Year by US Lacrosse. The 2007 campaign yielded four first team All-America honorees while attackman Matt Danowski was the consensus national player of the year. A veteran coach entering his 25th season as a collegiate head coach in 2007, Danowski spent 21 campaigns ( ) at Hofstra, compiling an overall record of (.609) with eight conference championships, eight NCAA Tournament bids and 17 final national rankings among the top 20 teams in the nation. With an overall coaching ledger of (.638), Danowski is one of just eight active head coaches in NCAA Division I men s lacrosse to reach the 200-win plateau. Danowski s impact on the Duke program was immediate as the Blue Devils posted a cumulative grade point average of 3.45 in his first semester at the helm. In addition, the team provided over 500 hours of community service during the semester, continuing Danowski s philosophy of college student-athletes taking advantage of the full experience. The coach-player relationship lasts a lifetime - so much more than two hours every afternoon, said Danowski, the 1993 NCAA Division I National Coach of the Year who led Hofstra to eight conference championships. It would be a disservice to the young men in the Duke program if we didn t care about their futures. To take advantage of the opportunity to teach life lessons is a goal of ours. I have learned the importance of adapting to the talent you have on the field, Danowski said. You can t put a sqare peg into a round hole. I am a firm believer in taking what you have and finding the best way to be efficient with that group. The 2006 season marked Danowski s best in a successful tenure at Hofstra as the Pride matched an NCAA singleseason record with 17 victories against just two defeats. In addition, Danowski s squad captured the Colonial Athletic Association championship, finished the regular season ranked number two in the national poll and advanced to the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals. The 17 wins and.895 winning percentage also set Hofstra single-season team records. Danowski guided the Pride to East Coast Conference crowns in 1988 and 1989, and he was honored as the NCAA Division I National Coach of the Year in 1993 after leading Hofstra to the national tournament for the first time since The 1995 and 1996 seasons yielded North Atlantic Conference titles for Hofstra, and Danowski then led the Pride to America East Conference championships in 1997, 1998 and Having directed the Pride to a record of in regular season conference games with nine league MVPs and 90 all-conference picks, Danowski is the only lacrosse coach in Hofstra history to win an NCAA Tournament game (4-8 record), including a 2001 first round contest in which the Pride rallied from an 11-7 deficit with seven goals in the fourth quarter against Virginia en route to a overtime win over the Cavaliers. Hofstra s first tourney win was in comefrom-behind fashion as well as the Pride outscored Massachusetts 6-3 in the second half for a 9-8 victory in The Danowski Era at Hofstra produced 34 USILA All-America selections including first team choices Brian Spallina (2000), Doug Shanahan (2001), Nicky Polanco (2002), Brett Moyer (2006) and Chris Unterstein (2006). Born March 12, 1954 in Bronxville, N.Y., Danowski went on to earn a master s degree in counseling/college student development from LIU-C.W. Post in Danowski s father, Ed, was an All-America halfback on the gridiron at Fordham in 1932 and 1933 who later starred for the New York Giants in the National Football League. The elder Danowski led the NFL in passing in 1935 and 1938, earning All-NFL honors in both of those seasons, and guided the Giants to league championships in 1934 and He later served as the head football coach at his alma mater from Danowski and his wife, Patricia, have two children, Kate, a former lacrosse letterwinner and 2005 graduate of Quinnipiac University, and Matt, a 2008 Duke graduate and former captain of the lacrosse program. 5

6 Assistant Coaches Ron Caputo Chris Gabrielli Assistant Coach Second Season University of Scranton 91 Assistant Coach Third Season University of Massachusetts 01 Ron Caputo is in his second season as a member of the Duke lacrosse coaching staff. In his inaugural season with the Blue Devils, Caputo helped Duke lead the nation in scoring offense with 15.2 goals per game. The squad won an NCAA record 18 games and advanced to the NCAA Semifinals for the second consecutive season under his assistance as the Blue Devils featured the top two individual scorers in NCAA history in Matt Danowski and Zack Greer. Prior to his arrival at Duke, Caputo spent four seasons ( ) on the Hofstra University men s lacrosse staff as an assistant coach. He joined the Pride in 2004 as a volunteer assistant coach for current Blue Devil head coach John Danowski, who served as the head coach at Hofstra from , as the Pride compiled an overall record of and a 14-9 mark in Colonial Athletic Conference play, during his tenure. In 2006, Caputo worked alongside Danowski to help lead Hofstra to an overall record of 17-2, a mark that included a perfect 6-0 mark versus CAA opponents, and a final national ranking of No. 2. The Pride won the CAA Championship and reached the NCAA Quarterfinals, while setting a school record for wins and winning percentage (.895). Before his stint at Hofstra, Caputo served as a varsity assistant lacrosse coach from at Syosset (N.Y.) High School, where he coached Blue Devil teammates and brothers Dan and Chris Loftus. A 1991 graduate of the University of Scranton, Caputo led Syosset to three county semifinal appearances and one Nassau County Championship game berth. Caputo is married to the former Randi Heller of Farmingdale, N.Y., and the couple has three children, Samantha (9), Owen (8) and Jake (6). The family resides in Holly Springs, N.C. Chris Gabrielli is in his third season on the staff and works with the Blue Devil defensive unit. In 2008, the Duke defense led the ACC and ranked eighth nationally for the second consecutive season by allowing 7.30 goals per game. He mentored three USILA AllAmericas, including first team honoree and USILA National Defenseman of the Year Nick O Hara. Tony McDevitt captured third team recognition, while goalkeeper Dan Loftus earned third team honors. Starting 19 games in the Blue Devil net in 2008, Loftus led the ACC in both goals against average (7.02) and save percentage (.625). He ranked fifth in the nation in save percentage and sixth in goals against average. In 2007, the Blue Devils Gabrielli helped guide four Blue Devils to All-America awards. Gabrielli spent the 2006 season as an assistant coach at Butler where he served as the recruiting coordinator while working primarily with the defense. Under his mentorship, three Butler defensemen earned All-GWLL honors. Gabrielli was a member of the coaching staff at his alma mater, Massachusetts, from , helping the Minutemen to a overall record with two NCAA quarterfinal berths. Gabrielli was a member of the practice squad for the Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse during the 2004 season before being drafted again by the Cannons in the 2005 Supplemental Draft. In 2004, he co-founded the MidSummer Classic, a high school lacrosse tournament currently held on the UMass campus. A four-year letterman as a defenseman at Massachusetts, Gabrielli picked up 127 ground balls and five assists in his career. As a senior in 2001, he captained the Minutemen to a 12-2 overall record and a share of the ECAC championship while earning second team all-conference and first team All-New England honors. A two-time winner of the Eric Sopracasa Heart and Soul Award, an honor presented annually to the UMass player who displays the most leadership and dedication to the program, Gabrielli went to play in the 2001 NorthSouth All-Star game and the MLL Major League Challenge. A native of Farmingdale, N.Y., Gabrielli graduated from Massachusetts in 2001 with a degree in sport management. He is married to the former Candice Diapice of Farmingdale, N.Y. LT. PHIL Emery Volunteer Assistant Coach First Season Naval Academy 02 Lieutenant Phillip Emery, a native of Great Falls Virginia, commissioned from the United States Naval Academy in 2002 is in his first season as a volunteer assistant at Duke. He was a four-year letterwinner for the Midshipmen playing long stick midfield and holds a B.S in Political Science. For his career, Emery played in 51 games for the Mids, including getting two starts, and picked up 81 ground balls. He had a career-best 29 ground balls as a rookie. The Midshipmen were during his four seasons. Before entering the submarine service, he spent two years ( ) in Barcelona, Spain as a missionary. Following his mission, he reported to the USS KENTUCKY (SSBN 737)(GOLD), a nuclear powered Ballistic Missile Submarine in Bangor, Washington. While onboard the KENTUCKY, Emery served as Torpedo Division Officer, Damage Control Assistant, Anti-terrorism Officer, and Assistant Weapons Officer during his 35-month tour. During this time he qualified in submarines and as a Nuclear Engineering Officer. He was recognized as the 2006 Junior Officer of the Year for Submarine Squadron 17 and is the recipient of numerous military awards. He is currently the Battalion Officer at Duke University s Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps where he teaches and mentors future Naval Officers.

7 Support Staff Erin Cobb Administrative Assistant Hartwick 04 2nd Season Carl Christensen Strength & Conditioning Coach Chadron State College 03 1st Season Erin Cobb joined the Duke athletics staff in October of 2007 and serves as an Administrative Assistant for the Blue Devil men s lacrosse program. A native of Maine, N.Y., Cobb played both field hockey and lacrosse at Hartwick College before graduating in 2004 with a bachelor of arts degree in history. She went on to earn a master s degree in the same discipline from UNC Greensboro in Joe Ferraro Athletic Trainer Guilford College 93 14th Season Joe Ferraro, a member of the Duke Athletic Department for 13 years, serves as the athletic trainer for the Blue Devil men s lacrosse program. A native of Cockeysville, Md., Ferraro handles the health care for Duke s men s lacrosse, men s track and field, and men s and women s golf. He joined the Duke Athletic Training Staff in the fall of 1995 after serving as the Acting Head Athletic Trainer at Guilford College in the spring of Ferraro, 37, earned a bachelor of science degree in justice & policy studies from Guilford College in 1993, and went on to earn a master of science degree in injury prevention & management from Springfield College in T.J. Grams Academic Coordinator Wisconsin 01 4th season T.J. Grams became a member of the Duke athletic department in August of 2005 and is an academic coordinator. He oversees the academic progress for the men s lacrosse program as well as baseball, women s lacrosse, men s and women s soccer, men s golf and men s and women s tennis. Grams joined the Duke staff after working at the University of Notre Dame s Mendoza College of Business as an academic advisor. He also was a graduate assistant academic coordinator at N.C. State while earning a master s degree from the school, finishing in A native of Sheboygan, Wisc., Grams is a 2001 graduate of the University of Wisconsin. He is married to the former Heather Mehring of Brookfield, Wisc. Bob Weiseman Equipment Coordinator 2nd Season Lynchburg 00 Bob Weiseman joined the Duke Athletic Department in January of 2008 and serves as the Equipment Manager for the Blue Devil men s lacrosse team. Weiseman worked seven years ( ) at Villanova University in a variety of capacities including media relations assistant, assistant coordinator of marketing, promotions and special events and director of operations and facilities. He also spent four years ( ) as Villanova s facility and game operations liasion for the MLL s Philadelphia Barrage. A native of Doylestown, Pa., Weiseman is a 2000 graduate of Lynchburg College and engaged to Meghan Carolan, a native of Hicksville, N.Y., who also is a member of the Duke equipment staff. Carl Christensen joined the Duke strength and conditioning staff in January of He comes to Duke after spending nearly three years as the Assistant Director of Strength and Conditioning at Missouri State. He worked with a variety of different teams during his tenure with the Bears. He specifically was responsible for the design, implementation, and evaluation of the strength and conditioning programs for men and women s soccer, softball, men and women s swimming, field hockey, cross country, and men and women s golf. Prior to arriving at Missouri State, Christensen held a similar position at the University of Arkansas. He worked with the Razorbacks softball, soccer, tennis, and swimming teams. Christensen served as a graduate assistant University of Wyoming where he worked closely with the swimming and diving and golf teams and assisted with various other squads. A 2003 graduate of Chadron State College in Chadron, Neb., Christensen was a two-year letterwinner for the Eagles football squad. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2003 and went on to get his master s from the University of Wyoming. He is certified by the NSCA and USAW organizations. Jeff Howser Speed & Agility Coach Duke 71 8th Season Former ACC champion and All-America Jeff Howser is in his seventh season as Duke s speed and conditioning coach. A 1971 graduate of Duke, Howser was a six-time ACC champion. Howser was named as one of the ACC s top 50 track athletes of all-time in He went on to earn a bronze medal at the 1969 World Championships in the 110-meter high hurdles and was an alternate on the 1968 U.S. Olympic Team. Howser ran on the international level from , was a four-time U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier and two-time U.S. Olympic Trials finalist. Howser served previous track and field assistant coaching stints at Florida ( ), N.C. State ( ), Duke ( & ) and North Carolina ( ). Roy Skinner Coach Emeritus Maryland 58 College athletics veteran Roy Skinner is no stranger to Duke lacrosse, having served as an assistant coach twice from and and as the Blue Devils co-head coach from with Bruce Corrie. Skinner and Corrie coached the Blue Devils to an overall record of In addition, Skinner, a longtime faculty member in the Physical Education department, spent 17 years with Duke s men s soccer program, serving as an assistant coach from and as head coach from Skinner s head coaching record in soccer was and he guided Duke to its first NCAA Tournament in He also served as Duke s assistant wrestling coach from A 1958 graduate of Maryland, Skinner was a two-sport standout for the Terrapins earning All-America honors in both lacrosse and soccer. A native of Dundalk, Md., he helped lead the Terps to the national championship in lacrosse in 1956 and was inducted into the Maryland Sports Hall of Fame on May 5, 2000.
