Cornell Yale Princeton Dartmouth Quinnipiac Harvard Clarkson Rensselaer St. Lawrence Union Brown Colgate Nov. 8 at Messa Rink Alex Killorn (Montreal, Que.) scored Harvard s only goal, the first of his career, in a 3-1 loss at Union in the teams first meeting. The Crimson scored first, on the power play, but the Dutchmen took the lead on two power-play tallies in the second period. Matt Hoyle (North York, Ont.) made 29 saves, but Harvard gave Union 11 chances on the man advantage. Lane Caffaro had the winning goal for the Dutchmen, and Corey Milan won with 27 saves. Harvard vs. Union Last Season The Crimson swept two games from the Dutchmen, winning, 4-0, at home Nov. 10 and pulling out a 3-2 victory Feb. 8 in Schenectady, N.Y. Harvard scored twice in the first period and twice in the third in the first meeting, with Chris Huxley (Weymouth, Mass.) netting his first career goal. The Crimson s four goals came on 21 shots. Union put 27 shots on net, but Harvard posted its second straight shutout. In the rematch at Messa Rink, the Crimson withstood a late rally and a shots disadvantage to give the Dutchmen their second loss in an 11-game stretch. Alex Biega had Harvard s first score, and Matt McCollem (Somerville, Mass.) tallied his first career goal. Harvard vs. Union Series History Harvard holds a all-time edge against Union and had lost just once in the previous 14 meetings until the Dutchmen s Nov. 8 win. Ted Donato is against Union, and the Crimson is at home against the Dutchmen. Scouting the Dutchmen Union started 2009 well, sweeping Princeton and Quinnipiac on the road Jan. 9-10, but have lost three of their last four, including a 5-2 defeat Saturday at St. Lawrence. Mario Valery Trabucco had both Union goals in that game and ranks second on the team in goals (nine), assists (12) and points (21). Adam Presizniuk leads the squad in all three categories ( ), while Corey Milan owns a save percentage of.901 and a 2.82 goalsagainst average in 23 starts. In ECAC play, the Dutchmen are tied for second in scoring offense (3.08 goals per game) but rank 11th in scoring defense (3.88 goals allowed per game). Current Crimson Against Union Harvard has used a balanced attack againt Union, with six different players netting one goal each. Alex Biega (1-2-3), Brian McCafferty (Lexington, Mass.) (0-3-3) and Steve Rolecek (Bedford, N.H.) (0-3-3) are the Crimson s active scoring leaders against the Dutchmen. Poised for a Turnaround The Crimson is looking to duplicate last season s finish, when a strong performance at Dartmouth began a league stretch run (8-2-1) that included a 3-2 win against Union. The Crimson had entered that stretch on a nine-game winless streak (0-7-2) spanning the New Year (Dec. 4-Jan. 12). Harvard went on to come within a goal of a Beanpot title, finish third in the league, reach the final of the Bank of America ECAC Hockey Championship and narrowly miss an NCAA atlarge bid. Difference Maker Doug Rogers three goals at Dartmouth were his first three of the season. Last year in Hanover, N.H., he broke a streak of 11 games without a goal. Rogers had nine goals and four assists in the final 11 regular-season games and added two goals and five helpers in five playoff games. The Bright Stuff Harvard is at home this season and at home under Ted Donato. The Crimson has been even tougher at home in league play. Harvard is in home ECAC Hockey games and in its last 10 home league contests. The Crimson has outscored its opponents, 28-8, in those eight wins. End of a Run The Jan. 10 loss to Yale ended Harvard s ninegame unbeaten streak (8-0-1), dating back to last season, in home ECAC Hockey play. The Crimson s last home league loss in the regular season chad been Jan. 12, 2008 against eventual ECAC regular-season champion Clarkson. Magic Number Harvard is when scoring three or more goals and when netting two or fewer.

Jimmy F raser (Port Huron, Mich.) ranks third with four goals, and five players have scored three apiece. On the Dot Doug Rogers has won 61.9 percent of his faceoffs this season ( ). He has posted a winning record in 16 of 19 games and double-digit faceoff wins in 16 games. He had a season-high 20 wins Sunday at Dartmouth and has won 70.7 percent (102-38) of his draws since Christmas. In 86 career games, Rogers has posted a winning faceoff record 65 times and an even record five times. Crimson Career Leaders Doug Rogers is Harvard s active career leader in points (67) and goals (23). His 44 career assists are good for a share of the team lead with Brian McCafferty (Lexington, Mass.). Fixtures Three Crimson players have played in every game since their arrival in Cambridge: juniors Alex Biega and Doug Rogers (86 games played) and freshman Alex Killorn (19). Freshman Force Alex Killorn is tied for third on the team in in points (10) and assists (seven) and ranks among the rookie leaders in ECAC scoring (2-6-8). Only three Harvard freshmen have previously led the team in scoring for a season: George Hughes 79 in , Mark Fusco in and Peter Ciavaglia 91 in Between the Pipes Matt Hoyle has started 17 games in goal for the Crimson. He has allowed two goals or fewer in eight games. The team is reunited for the game and was honored on the ice during the first intermission. This season is the 20th anniversary of the Crimson s NCAA title run. Led by Hobey Baker winner Lane MacDonald, the Crimson won its first 15 games, finished 31-3 and captured the ECAC regular-season and Beanpot championships along the way. Ed Krayer 89 scored the overtime winner to lift Harvard to a 4-3 win against Minnesota in the tournament final, and Ted Donato was named Most Outstanding Player. The lineup featured four Olympians (two former, two future), three players who would earn All-America honors in their careers, three who would go on to play in the NHL and two future Division I head coaches. 5 Harvard vs. Union Jan. 30, 2009 Experience Isn t Everything Harvard entered the season without an experienced goaltender but has overcome inexperience in net in the past. The and Crimson goalies entered the season with minimal collegiate playing time under their belts and finished the season as ECAC champions. Harvard s national-championship squad rotated a pair of freshman goalies throughout the season. A New Role With the Crimson blue-line corps depleted by injuries, Joe Smith (Woburn, Mass.) skated as a defenseman for the first time in his Harvard career Dec. 28 against Alabama-Huntsville. He had an even plus/minus rating. Crimson Captains Harvard is captained by Jimmy Fraser and Brian McCafferty. This is only the fifth year, but second straight, that the Crimson has had co-captains. Alex Biega is Harvard s assistant captain, the program s first since , when current pros Tom Cavanagh 05 and Ryan Lannon 05 wore the A. His Reputation Precedes Him Alex Biega, a third-team all-league pick last season, was a preseason all-league selection by the ECAC Hockey coaches and media this year.
