CORRESPONDANCE: Thank you letter from Bill Morrison OLD BUSINESS: a) The Zone Team Committee/BC Hockey Zone Program Proposal: Do we want to continue looking into our own zone program or go with BC Hockey s? We have people on this board who are interested in moving forward with planning our own Why do we not run our own pilot program as a trial at the T1 level

Have tryouts in Comox or Campbell River for the North, Nanaimo in the Mid and have 2 locations in the South JDF or Saanich or VRC. Cut players simply return to their home MHA s for regular tryouts after Could run a pilot at Bantam but not Midget as there are already other programs at this level. Could still offer at Midget those that are interested will come This would allow many kids to stay living at home and in their regular school if they wish. The requirement (that at MML for instance) that they also change schools to attend a one with a Sport Academy program as has made things quite difficult for players and their families. Let s not make this a requirement in a District ran program Kids have offers already and need to decide if they will be committing to Sports Schools by next week Could we not set a date to meet and start planning for it now? Clarification on if this was just for T1 - Yes Can t drag this out We should make a motion and vote on it We could run and finish tryouts in August. End with a showcase where each team plays against each other to determine final cuts. Cut players return to their home MHA s for regular tryouts Need to advise parents sooner than later as most will have holiday plans Concern for strength balance between zones (i.e. less kids may try out for the North due to distances between MHA s) Evaluators should come from the zone and every attempt should be made that the Coaches be non-parent Should try not to conflict with the Female A & AAA tryouts VIAHA and the players home MHA s would need tryout team lists from each of the Host MHA s prior to the T1 Tryouts so we know which players are going. MOTION: Levels. M/S (Steve Moir/Brad Knight) to move forward with Zone Tier 1 Teams at the Peewee, Bantam & Midget UNANIMOSLY b) Sports Academy Ref Usage Yves Ouellet: We are looking into this and how to make things better and fair. We will be drafting a letter for Ref Development to send to the academies. REPORTS: a) VIAHA President Jim Humphrey: Teams from the District did well at Provincials and those that Hosted did a great job too. We are dealing with a few Appeals which are taking up a lot of time Cross Ice seems to be going smoother but we had an issue at the end of the season Dealing with Issues in Saanich involving their Executive b) Executive Director/Financial Report - Charlotte Johnson: Charlotte presented the Financial Report up to Mar 31 st, 2018 and the Forecast MOTION: M/S (Cory Manton/Andrew Copley) to accept the Financial Report up to March 31st, 2018 as presented. MOTION: M/S (Al McCulloch/Laurie Neufeld) to accept the Financial Forecast as presented. c) Director of Hockey Operations David Beatty: 229 Inter-District Travel Forms processed this season which is down 27 from last season 57 Gross Misconducts or Matches (2 still outstanding from the Juvenile BC Hockey Championships to which I m still waiting the game incident reports) Numbers are up from the 48 received last season and the 35 received in Island League. Managing Directors Report show increase in Majors/Game Misconducts. League and Playoffs are now complete

d) Vice Presidents Reports: VP North Win Hunter: It has been a busy year for North Island Recreation with an increase in Major penalties and GMs from 33 last year to 47 this year. Match and Gross penalties remain about the same as last year. I can t point to any particular causal factors Several incidents involving parent abuse of officials were handled. A significant incident at an away tournament in late December involving alcohol brought discredit upon Minor Hockey and serves as a reminder that drinking cannot be tolerated. It is the Coaches responsibility to ensure parents, especially at away games, are reminded of this regulation especially back in their hotel rooms Highlight was the success of the Tri-Port Midget Female Program The following reports were provided by each of our 5 North Island Associations Tri-Port Vadim Stavrakov: The MHA President asserts the Tri-Port highlight was the Female Midget Team who won their league, and won every tournament they played in throughout the season including the Ross Cup. They also attended Wick-Fest in Calgary where they placed 4th. They lost to CR in the Playoffs with a score of 2-1 and only lost 5 of their 33 games played this year - 33GP, 24W, 5L, 4T. Negatives, seemingly dwindling numbers - an example of this was Tri-Port only fielded 1 midget rec team so they couldn't play at home much this year. In addition, the year was our most difficult yet regarding issues our Executive had to deal with. Mainly parent related but also team officials and players - Vadim is not sure if it is because they are seeing a new generation of parents and players coming into the Association, but unfortunately it seems to be a trend that Tri-Port is attempting to mitigate. Registration is down about 15% in the last 4 years, but is holding in the 300 range. Campbell River Tamara Nazaruk: Midget Hurricanes played 15 league games. They had 12 wins and 3 losses for a total points of 37 points during regular season and tied for points with Tri-port. Tri-port took the League Banner as they beat CR head to head in leagu play. The league play offs was in Nanaimo and the Campbell River team finished first with the final game against Tri-port. They participated in 3 tournaments- Tri-port, Kamloops and Richmond. Our Midget goaltending was exceptional and had the lowest goals against in the league (23) Bantam Hurricanes played 12 league games They finished second in league play with total of 24 points. They were 6 W and 6L during regular season. In playoffs they lost 7-6 in overtime in the cross over game and didn`t proceed to the finals. Bantams played in two tournaments this season and took home Gold in Cowichan and Silver at Richmond. Pee Wee Hurricanes played 15 league games in the VIAHA female league. They had and finished first in the league with 42 points. The team had the most goals for (100) in their division (and the whole VIAHA league!) and was second lowest in their division for penalty minutes in league play. They finished as league champions. They had 2 tournaments this season- Finished third in Oceanside and First in Richmond. CRMHA rostered full female teams in Midget, Bantam, and Peewee this season. Atom and Novice had females on mixed teams. Campbell River hosted the First Shift Program this year which is hosted by Canadian Tire, Bauer and Hockey Canada. The program is designed to ensure a positive experience for new-to-hockey families, and consists of head to toe Bauer equipment, and 6 on ice sessions. Of the 30 registered, CRMHA had 28 players fall in love with hockey and signed up to finish the season, bringing our total registered players for the season at approximately 525. PreNovice 10% (8% in 2016): Both PreNovice minor and major divisions had a great season with a ton of new parent volunteers! We did have an increase in our pre-novice registration with various levels of skaters which can sometimes prove challenging for coaches. However, the season was a huge success as kids and parents fell in love with the game. Novice 16% (18% in 2016): Our Novice H3 and H4 divisions ran very smoothly this season with the implementation of the new program. Keeping the players separate based on age made the season very cut and dry, with no development or skill set being used as a factor. The age division (team formation) was easy to follow...however, what posed as frustrating for some parents was travelling to other communities and playing teams that had low numbers so were rostered with mixed ages. There were some confused parents who assumed it was a CRMHA decision to keep ages separate, and it was re-enforced time and again that this is not the case. Our H4 division was split into 4 even teams from the onset of the season and we were able to kept those teams the same throughout the whole season, parents loved this and kids were able to bond with their teammates. The feedback from parents in H3 was overall good, a little bit of frustration in the beginning of the

season as 2 "better" teams were formed and 2 "weaker" teams were formed for development purposes. All in all, CRMHA is doing well and enjoying the new format for PreNovice and Novice divisions. Atom 20% (18% in 2016): Atom house was a bit of a struggle this year as we drafted smaller teams in anticipation of new kids joining from First Shift later in the season. Unfortunately most teams were short players all season and therefore we weren t very competitive at away tournaments due to our smaller teams. However, having a development coach in our association to run practices this season, the development in players skill levels was more evident and the kids always enjoyed and had "fun" during practices which is a great accomplishment. Peewee 18% (17% in 2016): PeeWee had a pretty good season overall, with 5 teams mixed with female and male. Unfortunately we had a number of incidents (parents, coaches, refs), considering how much effort was put in at the beginning of the year to ensure that everyone was respectful. We had balanced teams who were competitive in house and at away games and tournaments Bantam 17% (19% in 2016): We had a great season in our bantam division this year. With no B team we were very competitive in every tournament including a couple golds. We formed 2 tournament teams with a gold in one and silver in the other. We had a couple small issues with suspensions but nothing of concern. The division head coach really enjoyed this year compared to years in the past, we had great kids. Usually there are a handful of kids that can make a season 'long' but not this year. There were a couple issues with suspensions in tournaments that didn t get to us or the teams fast enough, although not sure anything could have been done differently. Midget/Juvenile 19% (20% in 2016): Our midget season was similar to the past years. We had our usual share of penalties for some fighting on the ice, some verbal indiscretions and the usual playing a bit too rough. We unfortunately had a couple of games get a little bit out of hand with two parents resulting in indefinite arena suspensions. Our teams did very well at the away tournaments we attended, with different teams coming home with trophies. Midget division saw the same problems as years past, of kids not showing up to play because of school, work, etc which is the nature of the beast for this age bracket albeit a frustration for coaches and team mates. All in all parents and players in Midget recreation hockey feel it is the most enjoyable age to watch because the kids that show up are there because they love the game and it is reflected in their game play. Total Registration is down slightly from 515 to just under 500. Powell River - Stephen McNeill: Powell River held Recreation Tournaments in all 4 Divisions plus a Female Pee Wee Tournament and an end of season All-Star Tournament for all 4 Divisions. Powell River reports great interest and out of town participation for all Tournaments. Holding tournaments is a great way to provide variation to local teams who only have two teams in 3 of 4 Divisions. Powell River players and officials enjoyed hosting the Tournaments and almost all teams were able to attend out of town Tournaments. Player registration has been decreasing and repetitive play with only 2 teams in each of 3 Divisions seems to increase Major Penalties. All Divisions recognize this and switch players around a couple of times during the season to try and provide variation. Peewee stood out as the one division with no suspensions this year. Registration is down from 328 last year to 329 this year. Comox Valley - Bob Booth: The annual hockey season is now in the record books. The Association, with the combined efforts of the many volunteers and a few salaried positions, provided a well-organized hockey program that benefited the many young hockey players within the Comox Valley. Player registration for the 2017/18 season was comparable with the previous year and the total registered number of players seems to have firmed up. The Association was able to form Divisions with 6 teams in Novice, Atom, Peewee and Midget, with Bantam at 5 teams. Unfortunately, the player numbers for Juvenile where insufficient to support any teams. The Juvenile hockey level has been an important part of the minor hockey scene for many years and hopefully will be able to make a comeback. Through league play, playoffs, exhibition and tournament games the Atom, Peewee and Bantam teams participated in over 50 games in each Division. The Midget teams played over a 100 games and the Novice Division had around 100 half ice games. Over the course of the season, each Division hosted tournaments that where well attended and supported by teams outside our Association. Active involvement by the player's parents in making these tournaments successful is much appreciated. Many of our teams at all levels participated in out of town tournaments and exhibition games throughout the Island so players had the opportunity at different competition. The Association again retained the services of a Coach Coordinator. Curtus Larson returned and continued as

a useful resource for the younger age groups. As well, Curtus was Head Coach of the Atom "A" team. All his contributions are appreciated. The level of penalty minutes per game was on par with the levels of last season. Perhaps slightly lower as we did not record any Major penalties. Most games in the Atom Division had just a couple of minor penalties. Peewee games on average had 2-4 minors. Bantam was at 4-7 minors and Midget games at 5-8 minors. Coaches and players exhibited good sportsmanship and teams played within the rules. The Association has a great group of referees who provided officiating at a good level. Gold River - Chris McGee: A report from the GRMHA President: We only had 3 teams/divisions this year. Bantams which included 1-2 peewees who played up this year so we could ice a team. Our only on ice issue was with one of our older kids who got suspended for 1 game for his antics in Port McNeil. They played several games throughout the year and participated in a couple of tournaments. Overall it was a good year for the kids. Novice included a couple of mites/initiation kids and 3 overaged atom kids so we could ice a team of 9 players. By far our best year for this group of kids who played in two tournaments and had a few games throughout the season with our neighbors in Campbell River. We also had a mites/initiation team that was comprised of 4-6 kids of varying interest. They too played in a year end jamboree and the kids loved it. Overall it was a successful year for our association that looked to be folding at the start of the year. We held several fundraisers and brought in Bryce Cockburn from next level to our on 3 separate hockey skill clinics throughout the year. We held an equipment drive, set up a new website to draw more kids, went to the local schools and band to promote hockey and finally got the numbers needed to ice three teams. Our executive has struggled to say the least. We lack interest from most parents and the executive is comprised of parents like myself who value hockey and want their kids to play. I have coached the mites up to Novice now for four years and it continues to get worse as far as volunteering and help is concerned. We offer the cheapest ice times and hockey fees on the island but we continue to struggle to get kids to come out and play. We need other associations to make an honest effort to come to Gold River and play our kids. With virtually unlimited weekend ice time we offer convenient, free ice time and can arrange back to back games if preferred. I realize that it s a fair distance to travel but our kids simply practice week in and week out while the managers beg and plead to get the occasional game in with a neighboring association. That simply won t cut it to maintain their interest. In saying that, I realize that it is not the responsibility of their associations but should serve as a reminder that we will continue to lose numbers if we don t support one another. My other issue has to do with the referees we get for Novice. By playing half ice with a very young ref, the kids are at risk of injury if penalties aren t called or simply blown down and addressed. There is no formal instruction provided to these young referees and I saw countless, avoidable infractions that were on the verge of dangerous. I am a passionate coach and hockey dad. If my boys or any of my players made a questionable play, they were pulled off the ice and benched or spoken with during the next shift change depending on the situation. During our Novice jamboree we were fortunate to have our ref in chief - Ryan Walker ref all games. He is a senior Ref who was firm and fair. Several times he blew the play down and spoke with the offending player often quelling a minor dispute or correcting a misunderstanding of a rule violation. Bottom line, he controlled the game and educated the kids. For the kids moving up to Atom the following year I think it is crucial to educate them on penalties and the rules of hockey. A free for all type environment where there is no face off after goals or control when a goalie freezes the pucks will lead to frustration and potential injury. VP South Al Walker: Majors are down Lots of time consumed in Appeals Working on trying to settle a complaint between 2 teams one of which was a no show Full final report will be available in the AGM Meeting Package VP Island League (Competitive) Steve Moir: Congrats to all the Banner Winners this season all teams did very well Penalties More fights in Peewee than Midget this season Full final year reports from the Managing Directors below

ISLAND LEAGUE- Peewee Year-End Report (Chart available in AGM Package) Again, this year we had 26 peewee teams playing in 4 divisions and averaging 46 games each. Tournaments continue to be the main draw for many. Penalty minutes were down ever so slightly at just under 10 minutes per team, on average This season, as with many previous seasons, had its up and downs. Unfortunately, many of the downs are for the same reasons as in prior years, a lack of communication between associations and their volunteers. We somehow need to better prepare our volunteers to avoid frustration and fines, which were up considerably this year. Earlier choosing of who will play on each team would go a long way to alleviating this problem. The managers and coaches I worked with this year weren t necessarily the issue; lack of preparedness and knowledge of their basic requirements were. They learned very quickly, some teams paid in suspensions and fines, but overall, they were a great bunch to work with Another ongoing issue continues to be team behaviour at 1 st and/or last (particularly last) tournaments of the season. Despite continued warnings of suspensions carrying over to next season, one third of the major incidents from this season occurred near the end of the final games in last tournaments of the season. Interestingly, for the 1 st time in the sixteen years I have been Peewee Managing Director, half of the peewee teams did not even attend yearend tournaments. In the past, there were only 3 or 4 that fell into that category I would like to take this opportunity to thank Steve Moir for his leadership and support. He s always been there when I have needed him, and I very much appreciate that as well as the same support and assistance from Anne and Bruce, my compadres-in-arms. Dave and Charlotte, in the office, have been wonderful resource and support people also. Although I haven t needed to bug Jim as much as I used to, I do appreciate the job that he does and the support he gives. To all Association Presidents, keep up the good work that you do. Remember, if we all work together we can continue to nourish and grow minor hockey on Vancouver Island. Have a great summer everyone! Respectfully submitted - Sharon Cairns, Island League Peewee Managing Director ISLAND LEAGUE- Bantam Year-End Report (Chart available in AGM Package) This year the bantam league had 22 teams in 4 divisions. The use of affiliate players was also down from last year. This year again I had a number of teams that had very low penalty averages over the course of the season. There were also penalty free games for a number of teams. It is good to know that a lot of the coaching staff is getting the message about disciplined teams. We also had a number of players end up in the hospital and a couple with serious injuries. They all will recover but some may not play hockey anymore at this level. We continue to stress safety first for this very physical sport It continues to be a struggle placing teams in divisions. The other managing directors along with myself look at many factors that might come into play. The number of players moving up, returning and we look at the lower division and how that team did the year before. We try and place teams where they can be competitive and have a chance to win and lose games over the season. When presidents advocate for their teams they are only looking at one team and not the whole picture. Two of the teams that moved up a division did very poorly in league play and yet most of their exhibition games were made with teams from the lower division. On the flip side when you move teams up, the ones that stay are left with little or no competition. I don t understand the logic nor agree with losing most of your games all year builds a better player and team. Next year hopefully the President s think long and hard when they move these teams around Teams that did not have managers in place at the time of the coach managers meeting continued to play catch up for the first couple of months. My hope for next season is that Associations need to be diligent in having managers in place by this meeting. Respectfully submitted - Anne Dumonceaux, Bantam Managing Director ISLAND LEAGUE- Midget Year-End Report (Chart available in AGM Package) This year I only had 17 teams. A trend I expect to continue. This resulted in a reduction in the numbers of games played. Penalty minutes and rates increased this year in pretty much every category Midget Island League continues to have its issues that carry over from season to season. Junior B, and to a certain degree, sports academies and Major Midget, continue to impact most teams, often in a very disruptive

manner operationally but it is what it is. The problem is exasperated by the declining numbers. Unlike Bantam and Peewee, the Midget season ends upon a team s elimination. As such most teams are finished at the beginning to middle of February. There are no tournaments available after January anywhere in the Province I had a great team of Managers and Coaches to work with year, and I thank them and wish them all the best I particularly want to Congratulate Powell River Midget T3 for winning the 2018 BC Championships Enjoy summer! Bruce Brunt, Midget Managing Director VP Mid- Island Dan Payne: (written & verbal report) Another Minor Hockey season has come to an end and again, and as last season, all went relatively well I have had the same group of Commissioners for the last 3-6 Years now and they are a Fantastic Group of Volunteers All my Commissioners did a fantastic job with their Divisions, and I was very proud of the job they did Full final year reports from the Commissioners themselves appear below mine Mid Island Recreational: Midget: Karen returned for a 3 rd year as Midget Commissioner, ( 5 th year as a Commissioner), and once again she did a fantastic job. This is probably the toughest division with all the antics that these Players get involved in. There was only a couple of problem Children this year. One was suspended 5 times for total of 12 games. With all Teams making the Playoffs the extra activities by the 3 year player ceased, as they still had something to play for Mid Island Recreational: Bantam & Peewee: Both Leagues were well taken care of by Excellent Commissioners, Dawn,( Peewee), and Trish, (Bantam). At this time neither is returning for next Season. I want to thank them for their 4 years of Service to Minor Hockey Mid Island Recreational: Atom Recreational: The League was very well run by Dylan my Commissioner, with very few issues. Dylan may not return next year, and if he does move on he will be missed Atom Developmental: What can I say about Petra. My longest term Commissioner, and a very good Friend This was her 6th years now, and as always did an amazing. Petra did handle most of the issues that arise, she assists Dave with League scheduling, both Regular season, and Playoffs, as well as the Divisional alignments. The season went very because of her. Petra is Retiring from the Commissioner Duties after this season, and she will be missed VIAHA Office: Also I d like to Thank Both David and Charlotte for all their assistance. 8 Petra van Deventer: Atom Development Commissioner: This season saw 25 teams in 4 divisions compete in Atom Development. Congratulations to the following team s, winner of the League and play-offs: LEAGUE PLAY-OFF S Division 1: Racquet Club A Racquet Club A Division 2: Alberni Valley A Saanich A Division 3: Victoria A Powell River A Division 4: Cowichan B Peninsula B Scheduling again presented a big challenge due to lack of ice times available Travel is another big issue with teams going from Sooke to Tri-Port Going forward again the emphasis needs to be more on development and fun instead of winning. Too many coaches forgetting that we are dealing with 9 year olds not 19 year olds Complaints about officiating again an issue parents and coaches are expecting high level officiating in a league that is the stepping stone for officials to learn therefore discouraging these young officials instead of helping them One concern I have is the number of tournaments that are being held on regular season weekends, making it difficult for scheduling the league Thank you for once again letting me part of Hockey on Vancouver Island Many thanks to Dan Payne for all his hard work in Atom Development and thank you also to David Beatty for all his help throughout this season I will not be returning next season. Petra van Deventer - Atom Development Commissioner Dylan Taylor - Mid Island Atom Report 2017/2018: League Championship Banner was awarded to Nanaimo #5 Playoff Banner in Pool A was awarded to Nanaimo #5 Playoff Banner in Pool B was awarded to Cowichan Valley #2 Congratulations to the teams on a great mid-island atom league season!!!!! Over the past season, I had the chance to watch some great hockey and work with some great new managers and returning managers from last season, I would like thank each of them for their hard work for the past season. This was the second season atom was a part of mid island season with all teams from the mid island region, and it was overall a great sucess. This season also saw the addition of an all-female team atom team, and over the course of the season they really gave all teams a good run for their money This season saw a total of 15 teams in the Mid-Island Atom division I would like to thank Cowichan Valley Minor hockey for the help during playoffs for providing game supervisors when I could not be at the arena, due to work commitments Lastly, I would like to thank all the people at VIAHA and the Minor Hockey Association Presidents for all the countless hours of work they put into each hockey season, without them hockey would not happen here on the island Overall, it was a great year as the Mid-island atom commissioner, and I would like to return as the atom commissioner next season, however I cannot confirm at this point it will depend on where I m able to receive a teaching job. All the best, Dylan Taylor - Atom Commissioner - Mid Island League Dawn Borrelli Mid-Island Peewee Commissioner s Report (Chart available in AGM Package) The Mid Island Peewee division had a successful year. The managers and coaches did a great job with reporting and we had no major issues with any team this year. There was a bit of a learning curve for those coaches and managers new to participating in VIAHA but they adapted quickly There were fourteen (14) teams this year, down two from last year. There were two teams from Alberni Valley, three teams from Cowichan Valley, one team from Lake Cowichan, six teams from Nanaimo, and two teams from Oceanside. Most games were quite competitive, although some teams/associations were certainly stronger or weaker than others as shown by the final standings below

Oceanside1 was the regular season champions. In the playoffs, Oceanside1 also was the Pool A winner and Nanaimo2 won the B Pool I believe that everyone was happy to have all 14 teams play in the playoffs. It was nice for everyone to get a chance to have at least one more game at the end of the regular season I want to thank Dan Payne and David Beatty for their support and assistance throughout this season Thank you, Dawn Borrelli - VIAHA Mid-Isle Peewee recreational Commissioner Trish Gorski - Mid Island Bantam Report 2017/2018 League Championship Banner was awarded to the Lake Cowichan Lakers Playoff Banner in Pool A was awarded to Cowichan Valley 1 Playoff Banner in Pool B was awarded to Nanaimo 4 Congratulations to the teams!! Regular Season 91 Games, Exhibition 60 Games, Tournament 192 games, Playoff 12 games, Total Games Played 355 Bantam division seemed to have more issues this year than last. I had two players suspended before league even started. I had 13 suspensions of players ( 2 of which were match penalties ), 4 coach suspensions and 2 parents ejected from arenas ( That I know of ). All in all, any issues that arose were dealt with in an appropriate and timely manner. Once again, Dan was a great support for any questions that I could not answer. Thanks Dan!!! Most of the coaches and managers that I interacted with were easy to work with and I enjoyed getting to know them and their teams. I did have to spend a bit more time with a few team managers this year as there were some new volunteers. There were quite a few complaints that were filed through me regarding on ice officials and unsportsmanlike comments/actions. I did my best in handling certain issues and kept Dan in the loop on Issues that I couldn t. Unfortunately, there was one team that received 5 fines for using Ineligible AP players. I did everything I could in advising this team of the rules (as did their Division Coordinator), and for some reason they still did not get it I noticed a great deal of inappropriate conduct/behaviour by parents this season. More than I have experienced before. It leads me to believe that the compulsory Respect in Sport Program has had an insignificant impact to the hockey community. Its unfortunate to have all this time, effort and monies put into a program, which produces little or no benefits to the bigger picture Nonetheless, I had a great year volunteering for VIAHA this year. Thank you! Trish - Mid Island Bantam Commissioner Karen Kozocari - Mid Island Midget Report 2017/2018 I would like to thank you for all your continued support and friendship. It s been a great 6 years!! I did a calculation of penalties that were handed out this season. For league and exhibition games were the following: 4 min penalties which were mostly HC 59 ; 5 min penalties 5 ; Misconducts 22 ; Game misconducts 8 ; Match 1 I m still very happy that the Coach/Managers meeting is mandatory. There are some managers who apparently do not pay attention lol A number of questions throughout the year that were asked that shouldn t have been This year there were 18 Midget teams. We had 2 Port Alberni, 3 Oceanside, 8 Nanaimo, 4 Cowichan Valley and 1 Lake Cowichan team. No fines were handed out this year Playoffs went very well. I ve had some feedback from this year s format, some negative but mostly positive. The negative I have narrowed it down to the parents not wanting to travel and not about the players. The positive feedback is parents that are thinking about the players and the enjoyment that are having in actually being a part in the playoffs. I for one am very happy with this format. 10 e) Female Hockey Coordinator Kristen Arnold: (written report) The Female Regional Coach Application Deadline has been moved up so once appointed they can get busy planning the season ahead and encouraging players to register. Regional: The VI South Island Royals attended the BC Hockey Championships in Williams Lake. The team enjoyed the experience and did have some close games. The Coaching staff acknowledged the outstanding Officiating thought out the tournament and they look forward to next season The Registration forms and Coaching Applications are now on the VIAHA website. The closing date for the Coaching applications is April 15 th. The annual end of the season survey to the players/parents will be sent out next week to all participants Recreational: Congratulations to the Recreational League Champions: Midget C - Tri-Port, Bantam C - Cowichan Valley, Peewee C - Campbell River. Congratulations to the Playoff Champions: Midget C - Campbell River, Bantam C - Cowichan Valley, Peewee C Saanich VIAHA is currently in the process of procuring some ice slots that will be used for Female Development including skills and drills and Bring a friend. Once dates are confirmed all information will be supplied to the MHA s and to the players I will be stepping down this year from Female Coordinator f) BC Hockey District Coaching Coordinators Reports: Coach Coordinator (South) Steve Pearce (absent) *No report but will provide final report for VIAHA AGM Meeting Package Coach Coordinator (North) Brian Sugiyama (Written & Verbal) As we move forward to the hockey season, I would ask all MHA s to consider your Coaching Clinic needs. Please have your Coaching Clinic needs identified based upon new and incoming coaches. Please remember that all new H1-H4 coaches (coaches of players 5-8 years) must complete a Coach 1 Intro to Coach course I would like to start planning for Coaching Clinics in NVI for the next season. Coach 1 and Coach 2 could be hosted in Oceanside, Nanaimo, Comox Valley, Powell River and Campbell River. Development 1 could be hosted in Nanaimo/ Oceanside, and Comox Valley. These clinics should run August to October rather than later in the season g) Officiating Committee Members: Officiating Committee Member (South) Yves Ouellet: Majors are up and Ref s not afraid to report as its now easier No Championship hosted in the South but Good year all round Officiating Committee Member (North) Chris Canuel: (excused) *No report but will provide final report for VIAHA AGM Meeting Package h) Cross Ice Leads: Cross Ice Lead (South) Lee Richardson: (absent) *No report but will provide final report for VIAHA AGM Meeting Package Cross Ice Lead (North) Brain Sugiyama: This season has seen almost all those involved in hockey for 5-8 year old players (MHA s, coaches, VIAHA, and parents) buy into the concept of cross ice/half ice hockey. Most involved have come to recognize the advantages and positives of Cross Ice Hockey. A minority of coaches and parents continue to challenge the Cross Ice Hockey initiative. I personally have seen increased skill development, and more participation of all skill levels in games with a properly sized practice and game environment. Many MHA s have purchased equipment (boards, pads and small nets) I urge VIAHA to continue to encourage all MHA s to adhere to VIAHA guidelines for these players and follow guidelines and terminology for same aged teams of ages 4-5 years (H1), 6 years (H2), 7 years(h3), and 8 years

(H4). It has been difficult for inter association games and jamboree/tournament organizers to ensure parity of teams because some associations tiered their teams. Season 2 of the Cross Ice Initiative has been much easier for all parties as the program has now been in place for more than a year. Appropriately sized equipment (goal nets) and overcrowded dressing rooms (when 4 teams are on the same ice surface) continue to be a concern PRESENTATIONS, MEETINGS AND CLINICS: I would be willing to attend any pre-season parent/coaches/executive meetings over the summer or in September to December 2018 H1-H4 Coaches need to attend the Coach 2 Clinic NEW BUSINESS: Appoint Nominations Committee: Moved up from (b) The following members accepted and where appointed to the 2018 committee: Harold Bloomenthal (Chair and South Island), Al McCulloch (Mid-Island), Vadim Stavrakov (North Island) MHA s are encourage to contact the above applicable person in your area if you wish to Nominate someone All current Officers except Al Walker VP South are prepared to run again but that does not mean they cannot be replaced Reminder that as put in place last season there are no nominations for the floor of the AGM - AGM Reminders VIAHA & BCH: Moved up from (c) Please register & try to bring extra people to the AGM s not just your voters Cost for the VIAHA AGM has gone up $5.00 to $45.00 per person Proxy Forms for the VIAHA AGM must be received 7 days prior If you are not going to attend the BC Hockey AGM (now called the Congress) June 8 th -9 th please complete your BC Hockey Membership now to access your Proxy Form so your votes do not go to waste and can be held by another MHA. It s very important that we have all our district votes available and we need our District to be well represented. Please also remember to book your rooms in Sun Peaks you can always cancel them later. Charlotte can re-send the hotel booking info again if needed. A list of seminars at the BCH Congress are coming out shortly we are told there are more to choose from and the schedule of events has been changed up a bit - BC Hockey s Meeting Request regarding VIAHA s Rejection of the Female MHA (CRFMHA): Moved from (d) Trying to come up with a date that works for everyone. Disappointed that our word & vote wasn t good enough considering how much time we put into considering it and attending their presentations - Female Programs: Moved up from (e) A South Island Coordinator is needed to take care of all Female Hockey in the area and get MHA s working together VIAHA is renting ice and will be hosting some Try Hockey Ice times and On Ice Info Sessions for Females interested in playing Competitive/Female Regional. Looking at 3 1 hour time slots for Atom to Peewee ages and spreading it out over the Island. Run by Coaches Bulletins are needed in the schools, info can go up on the VIAHA Facebook page and the Website - Resolutions: Moved down from (a) For simplicities sake - all VIAHA resolutions were moved and seconded by the same two people but each resolution was still voted on individually was carried was carried was carried was carried was carried was carried (wording should be will result in a $200 fine) was carried was carried was carried was carried

MOTION: M/S (Andrew Copley/Cory Manton) to support all Resolutions as presented. - Tablets: Moved up from (g) Will cost around $15, VIAHA funds could be used for this We will need at least 2-3 in each arena Cost is around $2.00 per game. Very close to what we pay now to purchase the paper version including the cost of stamps, envelopes and time to post This is not the same as a Game Report those will still need to be done MOTION: M/S (Al McCulloch/Dee Vivian) for VIAHA to move forward with putting Electronic Game Sheets and Tablets in place for the coming season. - MHA/VIAHA Relationships: Moved down from (f) VIAHA is run by all the MHA Presidents in the District you are VIAHA! We are at a juncture where all 5 Officers are not wanting to run next year What do we do when we drive all the good people away? VIAHA is you - not just the Officers It s a large job demanding at least 20 hours a week to be done properly The South Island holds a MHA Presidents Meeting at the end of the summer to touch base. Suggestion to have a Mid Island Presidents Meeting and a separate North Island Presidents Meeting as well with the respective VP s. OTHER: IN-CAMERA SESSION: None NEXT MEETING DATE: May 27 th is the VIAHA AGM and the next regular VIAHA Meeting will be in Sept. Hold the date notification to come out shortly. ADJOURNMENT: 2:35 pm MOTION: M/S (Harold Bloomenthal/Steve Moir) to adjourn the meeting. Jim Humphrey, VIAHA President (Chair) Charlotte Johnson, VIAHA Executive Director
