10 What is County, District Contest/State Conference? Judging contests are an integral part of the 4-H experience. The objective of judging in the 4-H program is to help 4-H members grow in their ability to think, to reason, and to make logical and scientific judgments. What They Are All About... There are three major 4-H Contests held each year. 1. Union County 4-H Contests for all 4-Hers 2. Northeast District 4-H Contests for Novice and Junior Winners 3. State 4-H Contests for Senior winners All Union County 4-Hers may enter the County Contests. Depending upon your age and placing at the County Contests, participants may be eligible to compete in the District or State Contests. You must make at least half of the practices in order to compete at county/district contest. Age classifications are: D Novice (9-11 years) as of January 1, 2016 (or 8 AND in 3rd grade) D Junior (12-13 years) as of January 1, 2016 (or 11 AND in 6th grade) D Senior (14-19 years) as of January 1, 2016 (or 13 AND in 8th grade) In order to help you decide what contest best suits you and your interests, I have compiled a short rundown of each contest. If you have any questions, please call your organizational leader or the extension office. Archery: To assist 4-H members to learn and practice the rules of bow safety, sportsmanship and accuracy with bows.
