1 B.C. BC Angus News President s Message By Jim Moon, President of the B.C. Angus Association Fellow Cattle Producers; Some snow last night and through the day today-a sign that winter is well on its way. It was somewhat drier than necessary this summer as our crops where off a little-to-a-lot from moisture deprivation. Summer seemed short as the central portion of the province, as well as other areas, were burning; Very devastating in the south side area. Some controversy in that cows and calves seem to be showing signs of illness and the conversation is that the smoke from the fires has impacted cattle negatively. There s not enough research to be definitive but may be included in our How to medicate thought pattern. Sales of fall calves early were relatively strong - as winter approaches some downward pressure on pricing has been felt. Feed shortage, whether locally or in the mid to south of Alberta is being blamed. BC Junior Angus is an active group once again with an energetic and enthusiastic group of young people involved. If you would like to join or if you know someone that might - contact Carley Henniger. She will get you started. Two Angus Female Sales this early Fall were well attended and very strong. Numbers are indicative that the strength in the Angus Female is always a good investment. Congratulations to those breeders involved in the BC Elite Female Sale and the Shades of Autumn Sale. Now we can look forward to calving season as it is right around the corner. Edited and Published by the B.C. Angus Association

9 CAA President s Report By Trevor Welch, President of the Canadian AngusAssociation Greetings from the east coast. The weather this fall has certainly been out of the ordinary, as I sit down to write this short message, we are getting snow again, dropping temperatures, and the look that winter is here to stay. It has been a busy fall across the country as we all prepare for the inevitable change of seasons from fall to winter. Storing equipment, weaning calves, vaccinations, and sales are top of mind when you have a chance to chat with fellow breeders. Those of you that hold female or bull sales, it is also a good time to check in with your past customers. Early in the fall, Brian Good and I were fortunate to be able to travel a bit in your beautiful province. We visited with many purebred and commercial breeders, and were extremely encouraged at the number of cattle that are wearing our team colors of course I mean the Angus green tag RFID tags. A highlight for me would have been the visit with the current sitting President of the Canadian Cattleman s Assoc (CCA), David Haywood Farmer, at his ranch Indian Gardens. As your President, I have had the opportunity to represent Canadian Angus by attending our Angus friends to the south Annual meetings and conventions. In September Rob Smith and I travelled to Watertown, South Dakota to the Red Angus Association of America s Annual convention. This proved to be very timely as they had just released their new genetic evaluation tool BOLT. This was on the heels of Canadian Angus releasing our new evaluation tool AngusOne, which combined both Red and Black Angus data. And we were able to exchange some information and comments regarding the two new evaluations with RAAA members. Early in November, again Rob and I travelled south to Columbus Ohio, for the American Angus Association 2018 National Convention. This was extremely well attended and the schedule was jam packed with speakers, tours and information sessions. For sure a tremendous highlight for me was the tour of the Certified Angus Beef facilities in nearby Wooster, Ohio. What a fantastic job those folks are doing to promote Angus beef products globally, and to continue to increase the demand for quality Angus cattle not only in the US, but in Canada as well. Finally, as you all know, the Board of Directors is continuing the search for our new CEO. This process is taken seriously by your elected Board members as we work to chart out the future of the Canadian Angus Association. I am proud to be your 83rd President, and look forward to the New Year and exciting new challenges. From my family to yours, Merry Christmas and a Happy and prosperous New Year, filled with family and friends and of course many healthy new calves in 2019 as well. 20 BC Junior Angus Report Amanda McGillivray, BC Junior Angus Association President Hello fellow Juniors! My name is Amanda McGillivray and I am pleased to be your new BC Jr Angus Association president. The BC Jr Angus Association welcomes all youth under the age of 21. We hope to provide opportunities to learn about the Angus breed and cattle industry, as well as promote National Jr Angus events to youth in BC and offer opportunities to network and socialize to Jr Angus members. I have been a member in the National Junior Angus Association for the past 4 years, and have been lucky to experience many Angus events in our country from right here in Comox, B.C. all the way to Truro, Nova Scotia, including many Showdowns, 2 GOAL conferences and the 2018 National Angus Convention. I have also been in the 4-H program for 6 years as a beef member which has offered many opportunities to show my homegrown Angus in interior of British Columbia. Currently I am in Grade 11, living on my family s cattle ranch south of Kamloops, where we have purebred and commercial Angus cattle. It is very exciting to be reestablishing the BC Jr Angus board with the help of Carley Henniger. Our board consists of several enthusiastic members from all over southern BC. Our executive includes the National Jr. Angus Ambassador, Matthew McGillivray, the CJAA BC Director, Meghan McGillivray, BCAA Board Representative, Alana Higgins and our secretary Rylonn Eliot. We have met twice and established some goals and plans for the upcoming year including a fun bowling event planned for the 29th of December to end our first year. Our new association is aimed at readying young BC Angus enthusiasts to get involved in the Angus breed provincially and nationally. We have a busy year ahead of us with members planning to start the year off with the February CJAA GOAL Conference hosted in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. In June we hope to send representatives to the National Angus Convention in Drumheller, AB. We are also very excited to announce the National Junior Angus show, Showdown, will be held in Barriere, BC. This will be a great opportunity to showcase BC Angus to other Juniors from across Canada. Keep this in mind as you look over your calves to select some show prospects for this fun event. Lastly we have plans to host a beef field day for BC Juniors and and youth interesting in the beef industry during the summer. If any Juniors have questions about joining the BC Junior Angus Association, please feel free to give me a call 1(250) or send an to aamcgillivray@gmail.com. We are also looking for sponsors and support for our upcoming events and hope BC Angus producers will help us have a successful 2019! I look forward to seeing you at Angus events in the future!
