2 Competition Each year, we at PackLeader Farm, spend hours designing and drawing the courses for the Kelpie Round-Up. This year we thought it would be fun to give our competitors a chance to join in the fun. For the 8th Annual Kelpie Round-Up on July 12, 13, and 14 th, 2019 we are doing a course design competition. Our theme of the Kelpie Round-Up each year is diversity. If we did a take pen one day we do a gather the next. If we did a ribbon pull, we will do a gate sort or a shed on the next days. At this event, we like to provide our competitors the opportunity to showcase dogs that can work close-in with pens, alleys, and chutes, and/or can work in the open field with free standing obstacles. We tend to maximize outruns (given the restrictions of the property), and do narrower or unusual obstacles. Creativity, diversity, and required teamwork to accomplish the tasks are critical considerations. COURSE SCHEDULE: Friday: HRD Sheep, HRD Cattle, HTAD Sheep/Duck, HTD Sheep/Duck, JHD Saturday: HRD Sheep, HTAD Sheep/Duck, HTD Sheep/Duck, JHD Sunday: HRD Cattle, HTAD Sheep/Duck, HTD Sheep/Duck, JHD SELECTION CRITERIA: Many factors are considered when designing courses for the Kelpie Round-Up. Some of the main considerations that you should keep in mind are: We run 2 to 3 judges each day and have multiple arenas running at one time. How the course fits in with the flow of the course schedule is an important consideration. Course Setup and Take Down - Often some of the obstacles used for the close-in HRD courses are utilized on the HTAD Sheep courses as well. In the open field, we sometimes use natural obstacles or the existing permanent obstacles on the field indicated on the map. Obstacles can also be a set of cones, natural obstacles, straw bales, etc. How well the course flows and if it resets or needs stock handlers are considerations. How unique and interesting the course is while fitting within the rules. The obstacles do not have to be especially hard, but ones that make you and your dog think and problem solve as a team are valued. We reserve the right to adjust the course design for better flow or safety. We reserve the right to adjust the width of the obstacles, pens, and alleys to conform to the rules, property, or stock safety. AWARD: If one or more of the courses you designed are selected, you will get one free entry for one dog on each of your courses that are selected for the weekend. The dog must belong to the person the course design entry was submitted under. You may work as a team, but only one name may be on the course submission and that person receives a free entry on the selected course for a dog they own. Partial Credit on one course will be given for a unique obstacle or partial design that is ultimately utilized even though the overall course is not selected. If two separate courses are selected as a partial design for a unique final course both people get Partial Credit on one of the course(s) it is used on.
3 SUBMISSION: Submissions for the course design must be received no later than December 31 st, Course Design submissions should be mailed to: Kelpie Round-Up Course Design Competition, C/O Barbara Davenport Crews Rd NW, Gig Harbor WA or at If your course(s) are selected, you must submit your selected dog s entry prior to the pre-entry close date. GENERAL COURSE RULES AND REGULATIONS: Attached are blank farm diagrams for you to use: Your design must include a course, drawn either via computer or free hand, and a written description of the course. You may add pens or obstacles where needed. If you are local, you are welcome to stop by and look at the facility in person. If you happen to have Microsoft Visio, please let us know, and we will be happy to send you the template for the farm diagrams in the Visio format. We prefer courses which are self-setting by utilizing more than one group of livestock to progress them through the course, but if necessary we can have a stock handler re-set the course. SHEEP We run two different HRD sheep courses each year. One of these HRD courses is considered close-in using the alleys, any of the chutes, pens, and one of the arenas (either Arena A or Arena B). The other course is typically in the open, either using the back field or the lower field. Your HRD sheep must use a minimum of 5 head of stock. Your course design may utilize a 2 nd group for the sort or may, for a brief section, utilize less than 5 head. We run 2 HTAD courses each year. Either two HTAD5 courses or one HTAD5 and one of the other HTAD courses. One course is in Arena A and one course is in Arena B. CATTLE We run two different cattle courses each year. One of these HRD courses is typically close-in using the alleys, cattle chute in the alley next to Arena A, pens (enlarged to 12x24), and one of the arenas. One of the cattle HRD courses is typically in the open, usually in the lower field, but we are willing to use the back field this year for the right course design. Your HRD cattle course must use a minimum of 5 head of stock. Your course design may, for a brief section, utilize less than 5 head such as during or right after the sort exercise. DUCKS We have typically run HTAD 1-4 (see rulebook) but if someone wants to design an HTAD 5 course, please help yourself. Ducks must be run in groups of 5. AHBA RULES AND REGULATIONS Attached to the is a copy of the rule book. Or you can go to the AHBA Herding website;
