The Hereford cattle represent over 40 years of genetic selection which means nearly 10 generations of selective breeding on average. The founding principles of modest birthweights, female quality, temperament, growth and carcass quality are what FTF strives to produce. Only the best of our cattle are listed and the quality is consistent. We are offering the highest cut of Hereford yearling bulls as well as month old Hereford and Angus that are ready for heavy service. These bulls are an excellent choice for the commercial cattlemen. The bulls will make baldie females with easy calving, performance, teat and udder quality and have slick hair coats suited for our fescue. This set of bulls has the potential to make a big impact on the breed for future generations of cattle and cattlemen. The females on the sale are consistent FTF quality. The 5 year old cow calf pairs with heifer calves are sired by Torque, Prime Product, Porterhouse 455B, and TH Frontier. TH Frontier 174E was the high selling bull in the breed in 2018 and his dam, FTF Trusting Lady 312A, was raised here on the farm. Many of the cattle in this sale come from the same cow family. We are offering a strong set open heifers, bred heifers and fall cow calf pairs. A heifer calf out of one of the pairs that sold on our 2018 sale went on to be the high selling lot at the Ladies of the Royal Sale in Kansas City this past fall. We are retaining ½ semen interest in several of the bulls as well as ½ embryo interest in some of the females. We do not intend for this to be an inconvenience to the buyer. We will only will collect bulls and flush females if that is also the desire of buyer and they wish to do so for their benefit as well. Reflecting on our history, we have seen high quality performance genetics and we are invested in improving and building on these for the future. When you purchase a bull on our sale, the price you pay includes feed and yardage until April 14th. Basically, you are buying a bull that is ready for spring service and spring grass. 30 Looking back over the past ten years... This year marks our 10th annual sale, which seems like it s noteworthy of mentioning. When we began with our simple little bull sale all those years ago, some of you can recall our humble beginnings. We started out with a silent auction and clip boards were hung on the barn wall. Bulls were penned in the barn lots and if you wanted to bid, you would write your name and bid amount down. It was very unassuming, and a nice meal was served in the garage of our home. We chuckle to ourselves when we think back on it, no parking issues, no online bidding, heck there wasn t even a live auctioneer! But it worked and that was our start. Little did we know what it would evolve into over time. We would like to take this opportunity to share with you a little bit about us. Falling Timber Farm is a diversified family farm, owned by Glenn and Yvonne Ridder, their son John, wife Heidi, and children Madi (15) and Ben (14). We raise corn, soybeans, wheat and alfalfa hay as well as cattle. FTF maintains about 220 registered Hereford cows, and a registered Angus herd. We raise steers in the feedlot and when we run out of room, the rest go to Iowa. The home farm has been in our family since the mid 1800 s. Part of the farm was settled by the John Wyatt family who had followed Daniel Boone here from Kentucky just after the Louisiana Purchase. The Wyatt farm was passed to Glenn s parents when the last of the Wyatt descendants passed away. The farm has a lot of history and many stories have been handed down to our family. Glenn s parents had a commercial Hereford herd and shortly after Glenn and Yvonne were married they decided to make the transition to registered cattle. Yvonne was raised on a registered Shorthorn farm in northwest Missouri so she was familiar with the registration process, and she is still doing the registrations to this day! When John was in college he encouraged his dad to use whole herd AI programs as well as embryo transfer. He also suggested we save sires from the top proven cow lines to increase predictability. Since that time the FTF herd has grown in quality and quantity. After graduating from the University of Missouri in 2000 with a degree in Agriculture, John got a job in ag sales where he learned about communication and management. After several years the opportunity came for him to work on the family farm. John implemented his sales training to set up FTF as a mineral dealer selling VitaFerm products and we have had success with our own cattle as well as our customers. He is also an independent sales representative for semen companies. In 2017 FTF was ranked in the top 5 dealers in the country for both VitaFerm products and semen sales. John has always been willing to help people and enjoys seeing our customers succeed. We firmly believe the products we sell help our customers achieve their goals. FTF strives to produce cattle that excel in our environment. We have two farms an hour from home and the cattle there are cared for by neighbors. It is very important to us to produce animals with moderate birth weights that calve unassisted. We have also put much selection pressure on growth traits, udder quality, carcass traits, feet, and slick hairs coats. Our primary marketing goal is to produce problem free performance bulls and replacement females for the Midwestern cattleman. We have sold cattle all over the country from Florida to Washington state and they work well in those environments too. We have been very fortunate to have excellent, hardworking employees and partners that raise our cattle on their farms. This has been a huge part of our growth and success. We also have exceptional customers who are striving to raise the best cattle they can. We are truly grateful for the friendships and relationships we have made over the years. Our family stays busy on the farm, but we do make it a priority to attend our kids sporting events, John serves on the local FFA Alumni board, as well as beef project leader for our county 4-H. We host many events on the farm, such as beef meetings and livestock judging for 4-H, customer appreciation events, tours for county cattlemen s associations, and tours sponsored by the Missouri Beef Industry Council such as the 2018 Dietetic Intern tours. We enjoy educating consumers, chefs, and health field professionals about where their food comes from and how it was raised. It is our desire to have an open line of communication with consumers about family farms just like ours. In September of 2018 we hosted the Missouri Hereford Association Field Day. The weather forecast was calling for down pouring rain and flash flooding. We got lucky and it only sprinkled here, so we had a good time. We also try to stay in touch with our customers by sending out a newsletter twice a year, and staying current on Facebook, but mostly we try our best to pick up the phone when it rings.
