This year s 4-H Public Presentation event was held Saturday, Feb. 16 in the Tioga Co. Office Building. Forty-four 4-H members gave presentations. Nineteen 4-H members qualified to advance to the regional 4-H District Public Presentation event and three 4-H horse project members qualified to advance to the regional 4-H Horse Communications event. Both events will be held on Saturday, March 23 in Chenango Forks. Junior Horse Communications presenters: Tess Bergfjord, Kylie Estrella and Ella Klingle NYS AG & MARKETS ANIMAL HEALTH REQUIREMENTS The 2019 NYS Department of Ag & Markets Animal Heath Requirements are now posted online at: Please read through this document carefully. There is a NEW RFID ear tag requirement for cattle and swine at all Fairs this year.
3 2019 EQUINE EXTRAVAGANZA! SUNY Cobleskill and the 4-H Youth Development program of CCE Schoharie-Otsego & CCE Fulton -Montgomery invite 4-H youth, 5 to 19 years old, from across New York state to attend 4-H Equine Extravaganza! The cost is $20 per youth and $10 per adult chaperone, which includes a t-shirt. All 4-H youth must be accompanied by an approved adult chaperone or their parent. Lunch is not provided, however, dining options are available on and off campus. Participants should plan accordingly. All registrations and payments are to be sent to CCE of Schoharie & Otsego Counties. See registration form for address and additional details. We are accepting a maximum of 70 youth registrations for this event. The registration deadline is Friday, April 5. Contact Jody in the 4-H Office for a registration form and flyer. The event will be held at the SUNY Cobleskill Equine Center on Sunday April 28, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. SUNY Cobleskill equine science staff and students have developed and planned the sessions and will be instructing them. The sessions include: Equine Anatomy Show Etiquette Equine Careers Riding Demonstrations Horse Judging and more! This event also includes a track for Cloverbuds! 2019 STARR REGISTRATION The State Teen Action Representative Retreat (STARR) is a three-day, fun-filled event where 4-H members participate in a variety of workshops and activities meant to challenge, excite and further develop life skills. STARR will be held Friday, April 5 through Sunday, April 7. The event is planned by teens and adults serving on the youth/adult STARR planning committee and is held at the NYS Fairgrounds in Syracuse, NY. STARR is open to all NYS 4-H Teens. Contact Melissa for registration information ANIMAL CRACKERS The annual Animal Crackers program provides New York youth with fun, hands-on, science-oriented learning experiences on Animal Science topics. The program will be held at Cornell University on Saturday, May 4. Check in begins at 9:00 a.m. This year s focus will be on Horses and Poultry. Participants will learn about different aspects of animal care, interact and exchange information with faculty, staff, students, professional producers, industry experts, and more, utilizing the unique facilities of Cornell University. If you are interested in attending this event you must contact Jody or Melissa in the 4-H Office to register. The cost is $15 per youth participant. There is no fee for chaperones. All youth must have a chaperone. All participants must being a lunch and drinks. SAVE THE DATE! 4-H FORESTRY WEEKEND The NYS 4-H Forestry Weekend is Friday, May 3 through Sunday, May 5. More info to come. SAVE THE DATE! 4-H CAPITAL DAYS IS MAY The 84th Annual 4-H Capital Days Trip to Albany is Sunday, May 19 through Tuesday, May 21.
4 4-H Capital Days is an annual New York State 4-H teen (14 to 19 years of age) government awareness trip to Albany. Two teens from Tioga Co. will be selected to participate. 4-H Capital Days gives youth an opportunity to meet and interact with legislators and tell their 4-H story, create an awareness of career opportunities in New York State government, better understand state government, and network with delegates from other counties. During the trip, 4-H teens will meet 4-H ers from around the state and their state representatives, learn more about NYS government, meet with their elected officials, tour the Capitol Building and the Corning Tower, and observe the Assembly and Senate in session. They will achieve a better understanding of the NY Public Policy Process from a state government perspective and gain a better understanding of state and local government relations. Registration, cost information and final details will be coming soon. MARCH DOG MADNESS Orange County CCE has taken the leash and lead and will be hosting this year s March Dog Madness educational conference for teens and adults, interested CCE staff, and 4-H leaders. All dog project leaders engaged in community training programs are invited to attend. Join 4-H educators, Lisa Marie Hintze and Eric Fortune-Reader as they help participants understand and practice principles they can take back and share with 4-H members at the local level. Adults and teens will gain networking skills, exchange ideas and have an opportunity to work together while having fun. March Dog Madness will be held Sunday, March 31 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Middletown, NY. The cost is $25 per person which includes lunch. RSVPs must be received by Friday, March 22. There is a minimum of eight participants per class. The following guests are featured with additional guests still to be added: Keynote Speaker Dr. Paul Johnson, DVM; K-9 Officers from Middletown and Saugerties Police Department; Robin Markowitz, CCDT Pets Alive; Ken Porter and Nina Sorochynskyj, Northeast Search and Rescue; Katherine Pepe, Therapy Dogs International; Dr. Sabrina Timperman, DVM Mercy College; Janet Skala, Barking Bubbles on the Go, Mobile Grooming Spa; Dan Bacaloglu, District Manager, Royal Canin; and Lorelei Case, Trainer, High Point, K-9 Center. 4-H EQUINE / DAIRY CAMP The 4-H Equine / Dairy 101 Camp will be held at Morrisville State College from Friday, May 17 through Saturday, May 18. This two day, one night camp is open to 4-H youth ages 13 to 19 years of age and who are eligible to participate in this camp/college experience. Equine interested youth will be able to select from two tracts in which they have the opportunity to learn more about different disciplines. Dairy participants will learn about crops, soils, harvesting and dairy cattle nutrition. All sessions will be taught by Morrisville State College faculty and other professionals in industry. The cost is $125 per 4-H participant and $100 per chaperone. More details will follow soon H STEM CAMP NYS 4-H STEM Camp aims to grow the next generation of inventors, entrepreneurs and problem-
5 solvers by giving youth plenty of opportunities to try their hands at real world science. 4-H Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) projects give families science enrichment opportunities and connects kids to Cornell s science outreach programs. The 2019 NYS 4-H STEM Camp is Friday, June 14 through Sunday, June 15 at 4-H Camp Shankitunk, Delhi. The camp is open to youth ages 10 and older. The fee is $75.00 per attendee (youth and parent/guardian). Registrations and payment are due by Friday, May 31. To register go to: 4-H STEM Camp has seven tracks to choose from. Each camper will choose one track to learn about for the weekend. Youth may choose from: Archery Dynamics, Backyard Engineering, Code Explorers, Micro-Organisms, Outdoor Survival, and Rocketry I or II. Class sizes are limited and will be filled based upon first-come, first-serve basis, based upon order of registration and payments received DAIRY DISCOVERY 2019 Dairy Discovery at Cornell University will be held Friday, March 29 and Saturday, March 30. This year s topic is Dairy Herd Health and Management. This workshop is open to 4-H members 14 to 19 years old. The cost is $50 per youth and the registration deadline is Tuesday, March 18. There is a maximum of 65 openings. The fee includes activities, materials, dinner Friday night and lunch on Saturday. Registration forms must be signed by a 4-H staff person. The cost for chaperones is $15 who must also complete an online registration form. More information is available at: /dairy-discovery-2019-rowb0i Dairy herd health and management are critical in determining the production potential of dairy enterprises. Having a good herd health program and managing risk effectively leads directly to a healthier herd, both physically and financially. Dairy Discovery will help youth to understand, observe and participate in technical skill training related to such topics as: Biosecurity in your herd and diseases; Linear Type Evaluation; Managing Risk in Fresh Cows; Reproduction; Do my cows wear Good Sneakers ; Animal Welfare; and DHI records. JOANN S PARTNERSHIP UPDATES Add some clovers to your upcoming sewing and craft projects with new 4-H fabrics available at JOANN!
