7 Cornell Cooperative Extension of Madison County Page Madison County 4-H Scholarship Winners Congratulations to Madison County 4-H Members, Alison Eisenhut and Jennie McIntosh for being selection as the 2017 Madison County 4-H Scholarship Winners! Both Alison and Jennie are members of the Clever Clovers 4-H Club. Please enjoy their essays below! Alison Eisenhut Being in 4-H has so many incredible benefits. Every meeting you can learn a new skill that you can keep with you the rest of your life. In my 4-H Club, we cover a variety of different life-long skills. Through my eight years I have learn anything from starting a campfire, to making jam and we even took time to learn how to sew. Even though I now have all of these skills in my tool box there are three lessons that stick out to me that will help me with my future. One of the biggest benefits you can have for any career is having leadership skills. I myself am the president of my 4-H Club and have been for three years. I am also currently the oldest member so I do get to extend my knowledge to the rest of the club. I do have great responsibility as the president. I have learned how to run formal meetings which is always beneficial for any career choice. I also get to inform our members about our upcoming activities and help them with anything that we do. Having leadership skills is one of the greatest skills you can have in life, and I learned them in 4-H. Another great skill I have learned in 4-H is teamwork. I have learned how to work as a team mostly while doing community service. Not only do you get to learn how to work with a variety of different people, you get to also help other people. Also, doing volunteer work can make you feel better knowing that you just helped someone else. Lastly, we get to learn outside of the classroom. The things I have learning in 4-H have helped me decide what I want to do in the future. 4-H opened my eyes to a whole world of things I did not know and have inspired me to become successful and most important be happy. Jennie McIntosh Have you ever visited a fair, perplexed as to why there s a barn crowded with bovines? The 4-H Dairy program has taught me first-hand that their purpose is to be shown and exactly what that entails. First, I select the perfect heifer and work with her for months until we move as one. The morning of the exhibition, I arise early in the bitter cold, and become drenched while washing and clipping my heifer to perfection. Finally, as my Holstein and I enter the show ring, it s our time to shine Taking part and earning awards in this grueling process in 4-H for six years has taught me a multitude of life lessons. It has taught me what hard work truly means, how to stay friendly despite working since 4am, and how to have fun in the mud. Finally, 4-H has taught me how to be humble in victory and gracious in defeat. However, we do more in 4-H than just show cows. My leader has also taught me how to decorate, sew, cook, public speak, camp, and throw awesome parties. 4-H is something every kid should take part in, as it has truly changed my life for the better. 4-H means so much to me that I wrote about it in my college application. The bonds formed late at night in the middle of a field between my friends and animals make all the hard work more than worth it. I couldn t be more blessed to be in my 7th year of 4-H, and I will forever be grateful for this experience.

8 Cornell Cooperative Extension of Madison County 4-H Dairy Rodeo Page 8 Patience is not about waiting it s the ability to keep a good attitude Hard times while working require furious hard for dancing. what you -Alica believe Walker in. -Marc and Angel Hack Life On Saturday, May 13th, Madison County 4-H Members from Boots, Belts, and Bovines and Young Riders participated in the 4-H Dairy Rodeo. The Dairy Rodeo was held at the Cortland County Fairgrounds where youth learned how to wash, clip, train a calf to lead, and care for an animal throughout the day. They finish the day by doing a showmanship class based on their age. We would like to say, Great Job! to the Madison County 4-H Members, especially those who stepped out of their comfort zone to try showing a new species! 9 Cornell Cooperative Extension of Madison County Page 9 Animal Crackers 2017 On May 6, 2017, 4-H Members from the Young Riders 4-H Club took part in Animal Crackers at Cornell University. The annual Animal Crackers program provides New York 4-H Youth with fun, hands-on, science-oriented learning experiences on Animal Science topics. This workshop is for 4-H members interested in learning more about their favorite livestock, companion or pet animal species; emphasis on different species groupings and activities varies annually. Participants learn about different aspects of animal care, interact and exchange information with faculty, staff, students, professional producers, industry experts, and more, utilizing the unique facilities of Cornell University. Hands-on workshops are planned for each species group. This year s topic was equine and canine. 4-H Member, Kav Young, had his own station where he spoke and did an activity about farriery. Kav also took part in a teen panel with past Madison County 4-H Member, Morgan Cotter, where they spoke about their 4-H experiences and how 4-H impacts their life. Animal Crackers is an annual event that takes place in May. Keep this event in mind for next year!
