Equine Practice: A Veterinary Perspective Apply by May 5 Equine Practice: A Veterinary Perspective, July 16-August 5, is a three-week, 3-credit summer course offered by Cornell's College of Veterinary Medicine in conjunction with Cornell University Summer College. The program is open to high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The course teaches students the basic principles of horse husbandry, emphasizing anatomy, nutrition, preventive medicine, first aid, common infectious and metabolic diseases, lameness, breeding and foal care, and farrier care. Youth work with Cornell faculty experts in nutrition, breeding, medicine, surgery, and learn the cutting edge of equine research and medicine. Summer College offers additional courses including Captive Raptor Management, Sustainable Animal Husbandry, and Conservation Medicine. Click to apply or call STARR 2017 April 21-23, 2017 STARR 2017 Keynote Speaker: Shaun Derik The State Teen Action Representative Retreat (STARR) is a three-day, fun-filled event where 4-H teens participate in a wide variety of workshops and activities meant to challenge, excite and further develop life skills. The event is planned by teens and adults serving on the youth/adult STARR planning committee. STARR is open to all NYS 4-H Teens. Location: New York State Fairgrounds- Syracuse, NY. Cost: $85.00 per person. Your registration fee covers cozy lodging and delicious meals! 4 Cornell Cooperative Extension of Madison County Page 4 M-E Sprouting Seeds 4-H Club Learns to Cook at Cooper Turret On Wednesday, February 15, the M-E Sprouting Seeds 4-H Club toured the Copper Turret restaurant in Morrisville. Chef Kerry Beadle was very informative and taught the club how to bake cookies and make a pineapple boat. The club had a great time visiting a local establishment. 11 Cornell Cooperative Extension of Madison County Page 11 Oneida Kids Club By Alyson Combs, 4-H Member of Oneida Kids Club In 2017, we have some awesome events coming up. We recently went to the Hazel Carpenter Home. Thank you to Danielle, Hailey and Tom for coming with us. Also, thank you to the Hazel Carpenter Home staff for providing lunch and allowing us to come to see everyone. Some fun things we did were playing bingo with some of the residents, and we also got to eat lunch with them. On February 6th we had a team building night. We worked together to save Sam, a gummy worm who was trapped on a boat. Next up, on February 25th, we will be having the Rock-A-Thon. Fun fact, the Rock-A-Thon is my favorite event. We sing karaoke! It is so fun. There is a large selection of songs and snacks. There are 2 mics so that you can sing with a partner. You stand on a stage with a TV with lyrics and music. It is so much fun to watch others sing and to be able to sing. I remember last year, I sang with Jada, who unfortunately moved. I also remember at the Rock-A-thon that while me and Jada were singing, my older brother Chad, Thomas, David, and Mike (who is a junior leader of kids club) were on the floor watching My Little Ponies. Finally, on March 25th, we are going to participate in the Brookfield Bird Project with the Department of Environmental Conservation. Last year, we emptied out many birdhouses in fields, so that birds can make new homes. It was really fun to help the birds. We cleared the birdhouses inside so that they can live in the birdhouses without them being destroyed. More birds need homes and this is a great way to help them. I hope you attend these events and make new friends. When I first started kids club, I made a lot of new friends.
