2 Cornell Cooperative Extension of Madison County Page 2 Madison County had a Strong Showing in 4-H District Dairy Bowl Contest Patience is not about waiting it s the ability to keep a good attitude while working hard for what you believe in. -Marc & Angel Hack Life On Saturday March 12, 2016, Madison County 4-H members participated in the 4-H District Dairy Bowl Contest. This contest provides a unique opportunity to assess and develop dairy knowledge. Dairy Bowl is a quiz contest made up of questions pertaining to dairy topics. Pairs of four-person or three-person teams competed against each other responding to questions asked by Trade a contest Show moderator. Each team was given credit for correct answers. The team with the most correct answers is declared the winner. Individual points were also tallied and the individual with the highest score at the end of the contest was declared the overall individual winner. The top six place individuals in both the Junior and Senior division go on to the State Competition. There were a total of 18 teams from Madison, Herkimer, Oneida, Lewis and Jefferson County. We would like to congratulate all 4-H members; they did an amazing job with a variety of dairy related topics. We would like to send a special thank you to all the volunteers, families and friends that took the time to help the 4-H youth with their success. Continue on next page

4 Cornell Cooperative Extension of Madison County Page 4 What 4-H Means To Me By Will Groetz And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don t believe in magic, will never find it. -Ronald Dahl 4-H has given me many experiences this year. With making things from recycled materials like the clothes rack we made which was extremely hard because you had to recycle all the nails and boards from the pallets too! The hardest thing to do with the pallets was ripping the boards apart without cracking them. Then after that you would have to take out the nails and if they were bent you would have to straighten them back out again. Then finally we got to make the clothes rack. My clothes rack was exceptionally made! Another experience is when my 4-H group went to Corning Museum of Glass to make glass pendants and other types of glass objects. I chose the glass pendent because I really do not want something that I just look at. So we went down to the glass making room where they show you how to make your glass object. You start melting the glass then spin it around so it takes the shape of a circle. But if you want it to have more than one color you have to melt another piece of glass the add it to the already melting piece of glass to create a very cool design. Then once you are done they will press the glass with giant tongs to harden it. Then they put it in saw dust to let is cool because if you cool it too quickly it will crack. I loved the museum because the glass work was so different than what you would expect glass to look like. Then there is the electric lamp that was my most favorite because I was able to show my group how to put the lamp parts together like being an actual leader of the group for once. I was also very excited because I think it is very fun to build mechanical things. Once we got the lamp to work we got to decorate the lamp shade using paper and modge podge. I think 4-H has made me a better, more prepared person in life because 4-H teaches me about leadership and how to work with other people. It also allows me to learn how to do things that very few kids do these days like wood working and arts and crafts. 4-H also makes me a better public speaker so teaching a project gives me confidence. I am looking forward to many more experiences in 4-H this year.

10 Cornell Cooperative Extension of Madison County Page 10 Madison County Forms Ewe-nique 4-H Club By Troy Bishopp Nothing is as good as it seems and it s never better. -George Bernard Shaw Morrisville, N.Y. The first day of Spring ushered in, not only a batch of new lambs, but an exciting new Madison County 4-H Sheep Club. The inaugural 4-H Club led by Corey Hayes, Professor of Agriculture Economics and Commodity Marketing at Morrisville State College and owner of Emerald-View Farms shared his small ruminant philosophy with a hardy flock of youngsters ranging from 7 to 15 years of age. Our goal is to start small and see what direction we want to pursue based on the group s interest, said Madison County s Cornell Cooperative 4-H Educator, Kim Nowakowski. The club will introduce young people to the wide variety of opportunities that diversified agriculture, specifically sheep production, has to offer. Members will learn the fundamental skills needed to successfully raise sheep. Mr. Hayes plans to implement a Lamb-Lease Program, where participants can lease a lamb from producers and learn about animal health, husbandry and showmanship in hopes of exhibiting at County, Jr. 4-H and State Fairs throughout the summer months. Other ideas include, Livestock Day Camps, Sheep Producer tours, Starter Flock Programs, shearing demos and integrating the Morrisville State College s diverse livestock and dairy program for a well-rounded agricultural experience. Back Row: Corey Hayes, Tatiana Nowakowski, Kim Nowakoski, Kiera Walrath Front Row: AJ Rothfield, Logan Mills, Jacob Weinheimer, Madison Rothfield, Lilly Mills I travel around the country and see the caliber of youth programs that I d like to foster here in Madison County. Working with livestock teaches work

11 Cornell Cooperative Extension of Madison County Page 11 ethic, dedication and life skills which go beyond trophies or ribbons, said Professor Hayes. In collaborating with Morrisville State College s Livestock Program (40 ewes, 20 beef cattle, rabbits and laying hens) and the 30 college students, I hope to give back to the youth by providing experiences I had as a child that shaped my future in Agriculture. To find out more or get involved with this new 4-H club please contact 4-H Educator Kim Nowakowski at (315) ext.109 or kan58@cornell.edu Madison County 4-H Animal Science Program The following forms were made to insure youth in the program have a quality 4-H experience that is safe and educational.
