1 Madison County 4-H Flash Newsletter May 2017 Happy Spring Everyone! The temperatures are getting warmer, the sun is out and the sky is blue. This wonderful time of year means things are getting busy in the 4-H Office as we have lots of events to look forward to! Just a couple of things: In This Issue: Show season is upon us so don t forget to fill out your Animal ID Forms (available on page 11) the deadline is June 1. 3 Cornell Cooperative Extension of Madison County Page 3 Community Events City of Oneida Memorial Day Parade When: Friday, May 26th It s time for a parade! The Working Bees 4-H Club would like to invite any Madison County 4-H Club to join them in the City of Oneida s Memorial Day Parade. The group s presence is exciting and is already being talked about. The kids placed first in the 2016 float competition after they put on a short, moving performance about those Missing in Action in front of the judges table. This year, the Working Bees would like to have an even bigger presence so they need YOU! If interested, please contact the 4-H Office or Michele Stewart, Working Bees 4-H Club Leader! Canastota Memorial Day Parade Monday May 29th American Legion Post 140 in Canastota is organizing its annual Memorial Day Parade and activities. The kick-off point will be in the Roberts Street School parking lot and line-up will begin at 9am and the parade will begin at 10am. If you are interested, please let the 4-H Office know!

If you are from Herkimer, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, or Oswego County 4-H Programs, we encourage you to log your hours into the North Central Faces of 4-H Community Service Project. 4-H members, leaders and parents, if you have volunteered in the name of 4-H we want to hear about it! Faces of 4-H will provide your county an opportunity to showcase the great things you are doing in the community. Logging your hours into the system will not only give us a running total of the projects you are working on but it will also give us an opportunity to spotlight your efforts in our newsletters and create displays at the County and the State Fairs. Madison County 4-H is excited to welcome their Summer Intern, Nicole Chiapetta! Nicole recently finished her junior year at Morrisville State College where she majors in Equine Science. She received her Associates in Applied Science degree in May 2016 and will receive her Bachelors of Technology degree in May Nicole grew up in Connecticut where she was active in FFA and she worked as a camp counselor where she taught various skills about Agricultural Science and Animal Science. In Summer 2016, she was named the Amateur 4 Horse Hitch Champion at the North American Belgian Championship. Nicole plans on continuing her education after graduation by obtaining a Masters degree in Agricultural Education and hopes to one day work as an Ag Teacher in a High School. She is very excited to get started and learn more about 4-H Youth Development. 4-H Leaders If you see Nicole, please give her a warm, Madison County 4-H Hello!

You will also get a chance to see some of the best registered dairy cattle in the state. Please contact Chelsea if you are interested in participating. We hope to have a Madison County Team! The New York State 4-H Dairy Bowl Contest was held Saturday, April 29th, at Cornell University. 4-H Youth from across the state came to compete including Madison County 4-H Member, Dylan Anderson, who was a member of the North Central District s Senior Dairy Bowl team. This was Dylan s fourth trip to the state competition and this year he was a member of the 3rd Place Senior Team. We would like to say, Congratulations to Dylan on a job well done in dairy bowl as well as representing Madison County. Your dedication to the dairy bowl program shows!

6 Cornell Cooperative Extension of Madison County Page 6 Madison County 4-H Members Top District Public Presentation Competition The annual North Central District 4-H Public Presentation Competition was held Saturday, April 8, 2017 at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oneida County. Youth from Herkimer, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, and Oswego County 4-H Youth Development Programs competed. Happiness is a journey not a We destination. all can dance when -Unknown we find music we love. -Giles Andreae Madison County 4-H Youth included Makenna Walrath (Doggie Doodles & Young Riders), Caitlyn Smithers (Lincklaen Shamrocks), Cady Webb (Lincklaen Shamrocks), Patrick Awald (Independent), and Shelby Curtis (Independent). The competition is broken up into a Junior and Senior Division which are based on the youth s age. Youth in the Junior Division are ages 8-12 and the Senior Division are youth All ages are based off of January 1 st of that year. In the Junior Division, Makenna Walrath placed 1 st with her presentation entitled The Trouble with Puppy Mills. Caitlyn Smithers placed 2 nd with her presentation entitled Rabbits and Cady Webb placed 5 th with her presentation entitled Sea Turtles. In the Senior Division, Patrick Awald placed 1 st with his presentation, How to Build a Drone and Shelby Curtis placed 3 rd with her speech, Farmers Facing Minimum Wage Increase in New York State. Congratulations to all of our youth who competed in Public Presentations this year! We are very proud of each of you and for making this program so strong. It is never too early to start thinking of what your presentation will be for 2018! Trade Show

7 Cornell Cooperative Extension of Madison County Page 7 New York State 4-H Horse Judging The 2017 New York State 4-H Horse Judging Competition took place right in our backyard on Saturday, May 15th. Youth from around the state came together to judge classes and both junior and notice divisions had to give reasons. Madison County 4-H Members Kav and Grace Young (Young Riders 4-H Club) competed. We would like to say Congratulations to Grace for being a member of the first place junior team! New York State 4-H Horse Bowl On Saturday, April 8th, Madison County 4-H Members, Kav and Grace Young, Competed at the New York State 4-H Horse Bowl Competition at Cornell University. Kav was a member of the Region 3B Senior Team with members, Sophie Norton (Oneida), Briana Yetman (Oneida), and Anne Born (Oneida). Congratulations to Kav and his team from placing second in the Senior Team Division! Grace was a member of the Region 3B Junior Team with members, Krista Feeney (Onondaga), Robin Litts (Oneida), and Myah LaFave (Oneida). The teams had a lot of fun competing and are already making plans to study for next year. Great job to you all!

9 Cornell Cooperative Extension of Madison County Page 9 MADISON COUNTY 4-H MEMBERS TOP REGION 3B HORSE COMMUNICATIONS COMPETITION The annual Region 3B Horse Communications Competition was held Wednesday, April 26, 2017, at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Oneida County. Youth from Herkimer, Madison, Oneida, and Onondaga County 4-H Youth Development Programs competed. Three youth represented Madison County at the Regional Competition including Grace Young, McKenzie Cordell, and Kav Young. In the Junior Division, Grace Young placed 1st with her Individual Demonstration titled Equine Parasites and McKenzie Cordell placed 4th with her Individual Demonstration titled, Standardbred Horses. In the Senior Division, Kav Young placed 1st with his Individual Demonstration titled, Farrier Expenses. Both Grace and Kav will move on to the New York State Horse Communications Contest which is held at Cornell University on Saturday, May 13. The contest is an event for qualifying youth to compete and show off their communication and public speaking skills. The event is centered around the horse world, encompassing a wide variety of topics. The winners at the Senior Level will be invited to attend the Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup in Louisville, Kentucky. Congratulations, Andrew and Erin! The 4-H Office would like to express their Congratulations to 4-H Member, Andrew Curtis-Szalach who is the 2017 National Ayrshire Youth Record Book Junior Division Winner! Another huge Congratulations goes to Erin Curtis-Szalach who won the National Ayrshire Youth Record Book in the Intermediate Division. Erin is also the proud owner of her Ayrshire cow, Cedarcut Burdette Clove Colata who was the 2015 Grand Champion, 2016 Reserve Grand Champion and 2016 Grand Champion of the Junior Show at the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin. Winning these competitions is a huge honor and we could not be more proud! Erin and Colata at the World Dairy Expo

We will not be mailing the requirements to save printing and mailing expense. 11 Cornell Cooperative Extension of Madison County Page 11 Madison County 4-H Animal Science Program The following forms were made to insure youth in the program have a quality 4-H experience that is safe and educational. Please note the following: Madison County 4-H Small Animal & Livestock ID Form this form will be used to designate 4-H project animals. This form needs to be filled out by all youth planning to show any of the following species: Dog, Sheep, Goat, Poultry, Rabbit & Cavy and is due to the 4-H office by June 1st to be eligible to show this summer at 4-H Animal Shows. 4-H Horse ID Certificate This form has questions regarding care of the animal. This form needs to be filled out by all Youth planning to show a horse and is due to the 4-H office by June 1st. Both forms have the following question: What 4-H or educational activities have you attended/participated in this current 4-H year? (Examples: Presentations, Quiz Bowl, Clinics, Seminars, Animal Crackers, In-service). The club kicked the month off at the Hazel Carpenter Home where they told April Fool s jokes to the residents. Both the youth and the residents had a great time! At their next meeting, the Working Bees came together to learn how to make maple syrup and once it got dark outside, they went snowshoeing by candlelight. The Working Bees are working hard to get their float ready for the Oneida Memorial Day Parade on Friday, May 26th. 15 Cornell Cooperative Extension of Madison County Page 15 The Farmers Museum Junior Livestock Show Chobani Leader Scholarships Scholarship Overview Since the beginning, Chobani has been committed to sourcing the freshest milk possible from nearly 1,000 farmers in our local communities. From Chenango County, New York, to Twin Falls, Idaho, we work with farmers who share our values and sense of community. That s why we re excited to recognize young agricultural leaders we believe embody the Chobani spirit. Senior Scholarships These scholarships will be awarded to Junior Livestock Show participants, ages 15-18, as of January 1, It is designed to help advance a youth s path to becoming local farmers and encourage leadership skills, personal growth and practical knowledge through further education, the purchase of new equipment or livestock, or other agricultural training opportunities. All youth between the ages of are encouraged to submit a word essay answering the following questions. Please feel free to be creative! 1. What does farming mean to you? 2. If you could make a difference in the agricultural world, what would that be? 3. Share your story! We would love to learn more about when you started farming, what type of animals you have, who inspired you to be a farmer, etc. The sky is the limit! Junior Scholarships These scholarships will be awarded to Junior Livestock Show participants, ages 8-14, as of Jan. 1, 17. This scholarship is designed to help youth grow as farmers, whether it is further education, a startup farm, purchasing a first animal, or attending an agricultural camp. All JLS participants between the ages of 8-14 are encouraged to submit a word essay answering the following questions. Please feel free to be creative! 1. What is your favorite part about farming? 2. Why is farming important? 3. Share your story! We would love to learn more about when you started farming, what type of animals you have, who inspired you to be a farmer, etc. The sky is the limit! The Scholarship Awards Two $350 Senior Scholarships and two $150 Junior Scholarships will be presented to the winners on the final day of the Cooperstown JLS on Tuesday, July 12th.
