In this issue: 4-H Tractor Safety Program to Begin 4-H Public Presentation Day and Registration 4-H Office Reminder 4-H County Fair Schedule Cornell Equine Seminar Series 2019 Dairy Discovery 4-H Pheasant Raise & Release Project 4-H Drone Discovery Day CCE Steuben Robotics Challenge NYS Farm Bureau Scholarships Now Available 2019 Lewis County 4-H Teen Winter Weekend 4-H Animal Project Certificate Due Dates 4-H Calendar of Events 4-H TRACTOR SAFETY PROGRAM TO BEGIN The 4-H Tractor and Machinery Operations Training and Certification program will begin Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2019 in the auditorium of the Ronald E. Dougherty County Office Building at 7:00 p.m. The cost of the program is $35.00 for non 4-H members and $25.00 for 4-H members. Registration forms and brochures can be picked up in advance from the CCE Office. Current 4-H members should send an to Jody to register. Parents/guardians must attend the first meeting and are encouraged to attend the remaining classes. Participants (with a parent) can register at the orientation meeting but should plan to arrive early to complete the required forms before the class starts. Students must complete all classes before receiving a certificate. The training program will enable youth 14 and 15 years of age, who wish to work as a hired employee for someone other than a parent or legal guardian, and operate a farm tractor that is 20hp or greater, to obtain the U.S. Department of Labor s Hazardous Occupations Order in Agriculture (HOOA) certification. The program will provide participants with the required 24 hours of instruction, and it will include group discussions, demonstrations, field trips, hands-on activities, independent study, and field assignments.

2 During the educational phase of the program, youth will receive instruction in the safe operation of agricultural tractors and related machinery. Certification upon completion of the educational phase of the program will include a written examination, a tractor and machinery skills demonstration, and a tractor and machinery driving course. Participants must receive a minimum passing score of 70% in each test area to be issued a certificate of completion. The program is available to anyone 12 years of age and older, however only individuals 14 and older will be able to operate equipment and receive a certificate of completion. Individuals over age 15 are encouraged to attend as well. The top six participants will be eligible to participate in the New York State 4-H Tractor Operator s Contest at the annual Empire Farm Days event. Dates for the remaining classes which will be held at various farm and equipment dealers in Tioga County are: Tuesdays: February 12, 26, March 5, 12 and 19 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. each night. Three classes will be held on Saturdays, February 23, and March 2 from 10:00 a.m. to noon, and March 23 from 9:00 a.m. to noon. 4-H PUBLIC PRESENTATION DAY AND REGISTRATION The Tioga Co. 4-H Public Presentation Day event will be held Saturday, Feb. 16 in the Tioga Co. Office Building beginning at 9:00 a.m. Event day registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. The 4-H Public Presentation registration link is: The registration deadline is Wednesday, Feb H CLUB REPORTS Ranch Riders 4-H Club..... The Ranch Riders rang bells to raise money for the Salvation Army at the Lights on the River event in Owego on Dec. 7. On Dec. 8 we visited the Vestal Nursing home, where we brought bunnies and chickens, and sang carols. We participated in the Tioga Downs lighted parade on Dec. 15, and got to hang out with Rowdy the Rumble Pony! December was a busy but fun month!

Equine Behavior 101: What do our horses whisper to us? 2019 DAIRY DISCOVERY 2019 Dairy Discovery at Cornell University will be held Friday, March 29 and Saturday, March 30. This year s topic is Dairy Herd Health and Management. This workshop is open to 4-H members 14 to 19 years old. The cost is $50 per youth and the registration deadline is Tuesday, March 18. There is a maximum of 65 openings. The fee includes activities, materials, dinner Friday night and lunch on Saturday. Registration forms must be signed by a 4-H staff person. The cost for chaperones is $15 who must also complete an online registration form. Having a good herd health program and managing risk effectively leads directly to a healthier herd, both physically and financially. Dairy Discovery will help youth to understand, observe and participate in technical skill training related to such topics as: Biosecurity in your herd and diseases Linear Type Evaluation Managing Risk in Fresh cows Reproduction Do my cows wear Good Sneakers Animal Welfare DHI records 4-H PHEASANT RAISE & RELEASE PROJECT The 4-H Ring Neck Pheasant Raise & Release project is being made available to approved 4-H members through the DEC. 4-H families that are interested in participating in this project MUST ATTEND A MANDATORY Introductory Meeting. This meeting will be held Monday, Feb. 25, at 6:30 p.m., in the 4-H Office. Following the introductory meeting, 4-H families will have until Friday, March 8 to decide whether to commit to the project or not. The 4-H Office will order all pheasant chicks which are delivered in early May. 4-H DRONE DISCOVERY DAY The WORLD of Drones has arrived! All youth ages are invited to discover drones and drone technology Saturday, February 9, 8:30 a.m. - noon, at the Schenevus Central School, 159 Main St, Schenevus, NY. The day will start with a show & tell exhibit of recreational and commercial drones and continue with an introduction to aeronautics and safety from a drone perspective. Youth will then participate in four hands-on sessions. Sessions include: the science of flying, a drone flight challenge, meeting drone pilots, exploring ca-

5 reer opportunities, and operating a guided drone test flight. Presenters are: Don Zaengle, Unmanned Ariel Systems Instructor and FAA Drone Pilot; John Gustafson, suas Program Manager, Thew Associates, Commercial and FAA Drone Pilot; Doug Reilly, Director of the A.J. Read Science Discovery Center@ SUNY Oneonta and FAA Drone Pilot; Bob and Lisa Payne, CNY Drones, and students of the Schenevus Unmanned Ariel Systems program. The event is FREE; but, youth must register to receive a ticket. Registration is limited to allow for the optimum hands-on experience. First come, first served. NOTE: youth must have a ticket to enter the event. REGISTRATION is open! 4-H Drone Discovery Day is sponsored by Cornell Cooperative Extension, Otsego County 4-H in partnership with the Schenevus Central School, A.J. Read Science Discovery Center, John Gustafson, Thew Associates, and CNY Drones. 4-H participation is open to all youth, regardless of race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, gender or disability. SAVE THE DATE FOR 4-H ROBOTICS CHALLENGE CCE Steuben will host a fun 4-H Robotics Challenge for 4-H teams across the state on Saturday, April 27. The Challenge will be held at the Howard Community Building, Hornell, NY. Registration is at 11:00 a.m. with the contest starting at noon. The Challenge theme will be focused on Engineering with Robots. The LEGO Challenges will include NXT or EV3 robots that will have to accomplish challenge tests. A team must have a minimum of three 4-H members that are 8 to 18 years old. The mat will be the 2018 NYS Fair Challenge Mat. The robots must be LEGO Mindstorms NXT 1.0, 2.0, EV3, Education, or any combination of the three. Programming software should be the current free NXT or EV3 software from LEGO. A total of three NXT Servo motors are allowed; or four EV3 motors throughout the entire event; and ONLY one NXT or EV3 brick (only 1 robot). Only four sensors at one time are allowed. The sensors may be any of the NXT or EV3 sensors sold by LEGO. Sensor brands other than LEGO are not allowed. No exceptions. Each team must have only one pre-constructed robot with attachments and whatever is needed to program it (laptop, cable, software, etc.). A note on variability: remember that lighting, sound, playing field, slight measurements and task objects may differ at the competition from the condition in which the robots are tested. Be prepared to make adjustments as needed. The Challenge tasks, registration information, and more specific details will be available mid-january. 6 2019 NY FARM BUREAU SCHOLARSHIPS NOW AVAILABLE Information and applications for the NY Farm Bureau Scholarship are now available online at: or by calling Applicants must be: 2019 graduating high school seniors who will continue their education to prepare for a career in some way connected to the diverse agricultural industry. Live or work on a farm or be involved with agriculture via any avenue. Family Farm Bureau membership or Student Farm Bureau membership is required and may accompany application. Complete application packets must be returned to NY Farm Bureau in Albany no later than March 1, More information can be found on the website. Three scholarships valued at $1500, $1200 and $1000 will be awarded LEWIS COUNTY 4-H TEEN WINTER WEEKEND The 2019 Lewis Co. 4-H Teen Winter Weekend will be held Friday, Feb. 15, through Sunday, Feb. 17, 2019 at the Oswegatchie Educational Center, Groghan, NY. This event is open to 4-H youth ages 13 to 19 (as of January 1, 2019). The cost is $75.00 per participant which covers lodging, meals (Saturday breakfast to Sunday lunch) as well as snacks and workshop supplies.
