4 4-H Projects Small Engine Memories By Matt Fluharty A lot of boys and girls learned the basics of internal combustion engines over these 20 odd years in my group (two years off while my youngest - Emily got old enough for 4-H) and they got to see some really excellent working businesses from the NAPA store and local repair shops to the HONDA mentoring program in Stockton. To learn the parts and processes, we dismantled well over 100 single cylinder and larger engines. Thank you for letting me have the opportunity to guide this project group. I always received way more back from the kids than I expended. My group went on so long that the engines changed from the old style ignition with points to the new solid state ones! I've always had fond memories of my own time in 4-H during the sixties and seventies. I'll never forget these local kids (many now adults) and the good times we all shared. Sincerely, Matt Fluharty Goat Project Karen Robb and Theresa Loya will be the co-leaders for the county-wide goat project. If you are interested on raising meat, dairy or pygmy goats this is the project to join. Hi 4-H is a project for members in 7th-12th grades. The members have career speakers at their meetings, go on fieldtrips to colleges, do community service and have fundraisers for their end-of-year trip. The first meeting will be Monday, October 1 at the office at 4p and first activity is serving cakes at the Farm Bureau Dinner on Saturday, October 13. New 4-H Projects Quilting and Forestry New and returning projects this year are the Forestry and the Quilting projects! Everyone is welcome; ages 5-19 in both projects. Page 4 In Forestry we will explore the outdoors learning about various trees, shrubs, plants, animal habitats and more; learn how to age a tree, plant a tree, about soil, climate, and we are going to restore wooded areas that have experience fire in the last few years that may need replanting. So won t you come explore and learn with us? We would love to have you! Quilting is a centuries old method of personal expression, history, and art with the intent of creating a piece that is both decorative or tells a story while having a use and purpose. Quilting projects range from the traditional quilt to pot holders, table runners, aprons, wall hangings, etc. And quilting is not just for girls! Many, many, quilted objects including saddle blankets, armor etc. date back to the earliest B.C. centuries and are believed to have been created by men. As a matter of fact there are several very popular quilt patterns that are used today to create quilts that were originally designed and pieced by men/boys. Join the quilting project this year and see what kind of masterpiece you can create, I know I can t wait. BBQ There is a new project afoot for 4-H'rs. The Barbecue Project will begin meeting in January. Accepting a limited number of youth from grades 5-8 with hopes of enlarging the group later on. Barbecuing will be taught by the estimable Mr. Alan Wright, barbecuer extraordinaire. A bit of nutrition and food safety is thrown in for good measure. We hope that this project will eventually become a way for 4-H to raise funds by catering our knowledge (and excellent food). Come join in the fun!
