1 Hamilton County Clover News International Night Planned The ninth annual International Night will be held at St. Clements, in conjunction with Hamilton County Home & Community Education. Mark your calendars for Monday, October 8 at 5:30 p.m. All clubs should have their displays set up by 4:00 p.m. and each club will have 15 minutes to showcase their display. Barbwire Gang Scotland 4:00 County Line Crew Mexico 4:15 Funny Farmers-Greece 4:30 Piopolis Busy Bees Burkino Faso 4:45 Pioneer Country Kids Germany 5:00 Each club is asked to set up a booth and supply a sample food from their respective country. This can include posters, food, dance, costumes etc. It can be a skit or just kids telling their part. Remember each child will need to participate in order to be premium eligible. They will be judged and ribbons awarded. While a club is showcasing their display, the other members will have an activity about Australia. Following the judging, the booths will open for public viewing and sampling at 5:30 p.m. This is a great way to learn about other country s styles, customs, traditions and food. One club will win the Best of Show traveling trophy! National 4-H Week Illinois will be joining 6 million other 4-H members in celebrating National 4-H Week Oct using the National 4-H Council theme: Inspire Kids to Do. The Youth in Action Award honors four 4 H members who have gained critical life skills through their 4 H experience and have used those skills to overcome a challenge or challenges they have faced. Each of the honorees epitomize 4 H youth empowerment and leadership. In addition, the winners have demonstrated the positive impact they ve made with their family, peers, and community through their 4 H experiences. Nominate outstanding 4-H members in four different categories: Agriculture, Civic Engagement, Healthy Living, and STEM. Each winner will receive a $5,000 scholarship for higher education, be featured as the 4 H youth spokesperson for their pillar area, receive an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C. to be recognized at National 4 H Council s Legacy Awards, and network with celebrities and prominent 4-H alumni. Learn more at Deadline for application is October H Online 24/7 Hunger Summit Great Success The first annual Hunger Ambassadors Summit was held in Normal on the weekend of September Hamilton County was well represented with five youth. Kate Miller gave a presentation of the best practices when hosting a Illini Fighting Hunger Meal Packaging Event. Maddi Maxwell and Danielle Lynn shared the history of the of the GIFT Garden, Farmer Market and Barbwire Gang Gives Back boxes. Camryn Parker and Courtney Lynn shared their experiences with the gardening classes, cooking classes and Teen Teachers. The group toured the Midwest Food Bank and helped package 1500 bags of granola. We also toured the Olympia Pacesetters 4-H Club food pantry and clothing exchange. Youth came home with a better understanding of food insecurities and how it affects local communities. Watch for upcoming food drives and hunger information from these inspired youth. Unit 24 Livestock Judging Contest Are you interested in livestock, meeting new people who share your interests and increasing your livestock knowledge? Mark your calendars for a day of fun and learning on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at the Saline County Fairgrounds. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. This contest is open to 4-H members of all ages. There will be a Cloverbud class, a Junior Class age 8-13, and a Senior Class age H members will compete in livestock judging rings, and be prepared to give reasons. 3 Unit 24 4-H Fall Party and Wiener Roast You are invited to the 2nd Annual 4-H Fall Party and Wiener Roast! Join us at the Saline Co. Fairgrounds Livestock Barn area on Saturday, November 3, from 6:00-8:00 pm for a fun Fall evening! We are planning a Bonfire and Weiner Roast, a Scavenger Hunt, Flashlight Tag (bring a working flashlight), and much more! We are hoping to increase our membership so, we ask that each 4-H member bring a non-4-h friend. Let s show them how much fun 4-H can be! Hot dogs and buns, chips and drinks will be provided. We ask that families bring desserts, cookies, and/or S mores fixings. Also, bring wiener roast sticks if you have them. Don t Miss the Fun! See you There! RSVP by October 26th to the Hamilton County office at This is the same day as the Livestock Judging Contest so we may want to spend the entire day in Saline County! We are collecting warm socks for the 4C s Homeless Shelter. Please be generous. Donating to this worthy cause will count on your 4-H records in the Community Service section as Participated in a group service activity organized beyond my county 4-H program. (circle Multi) OR Bringing a non-4-h friend to the Fall Party will count on your 4-H records under the Leadership section as Recruited a non-4-h member to attend a 4-H sponsored event. Manners & Table Etiquette Workshop Please plan to join us on Monday, November 12, at 4:00 pm as we welcome Marilyn Ellis to the Extension Office in Harrisburg. Mrs. Ellis will teach us proper table manners and etiquette, as well as courtesy at dinner and in conversations. Using good manners shows others that we respect them. With two big occasions when families and friends gather, Thanksgiving and Christmas, what better time to learn good manners. This workshop is for youth ages 8 and up in our 6 county unit. This will be a great time to see the friends again who you met at Cosmic Bowling and Livestock Judging. There is no charge for the workshop, but we do ask that you RSVP by November 5th. Following the workshop, we will have a potluck meal to practice our newly learned good manners. Please bring a dish to share. We hope to see you all there! Understanding 4-H Premiums In the past, the Illinois Department of Ag has provided funds to local Illinois 4-H members in the forms of premiums (cash prizes) for participation in 4-H shows and exhibitions. We currently have no guarantee that those funds will be provided. We treasure each of our 4-H families and know that you make a financial investment in your 4-H project work. We hope you continue to take pride in your 4-H learning and continue to participate fully in the 4-H program. As you are aware, we have no control on the actions of Illinois government. Attending this workshop can count on your 4-H records in the Project Learning section as Participated in a 4-H workshop or other learning opportunity beyond my county related to my 4-H project. 4 How Will You Celebrate National 4-H Week? Tell your 4-H story and win a free t-shirt. We ll choose 50 winners and feature your story and photo throughout the year! It s easy to enter. Tell us what 4-H has inspired you to do! Your story can be as long or short as you want. Include a picture of you being inspired. both to Judy at illinois4h@illinois.edu If your family allows, post it to social media with the hashtag #4Hinspiresme. so we ll see it too! Grownups can play, too! We ll have a special category for 4-H alums and 4-H leaders. Here are ways your club can promote 4-H and inspire more kids to do Have a flag-raising ceremony at a local bank, park, business, veterans club or school. Attend a city council meeting and have the mayor/councilmen sign the Proclamation. Give presentations at schools, home school organizations, and youth-serving agency boards. Have members bring projects and speak at local civic organizational meetings. Host a project fair for the community to see work of 4H members and recruit new members. Have a poster contest with your members, then display them in local business windows. Ask banks to include a bookmark or flyer about 4- H at their drive-thru facilities. Host a special interest workshop open to the community sponsored by 4-H. Emergency Preparedness Meeting CPR Weather Spotters Bicycle Safety Internet Safety Teen Driver Safety Host a quiz night Are You Smarter than a 4-Her? Sponsor a dance for Jr. High youth. Promote 4-H livestock projects at the feed store. Promote 4-H technology projects at the electronic/phone/computer stores. Promote 4-H foods projects at the grocery stores. Promote 4-H entrepreneur projects at the banks. Promote 4-H family projects at the doctor offices. Promote 4-H on local advertising signs, billboards, church message boards Start an chain letter What did you gain in 4-H? and distribute it to your contacts lists, then watch it spread. Take a plate of 4-H cookies to local businesses with an appreciation poster for them to post. Write letters to your congressional leaders about how important 4-H is to you. Take thank you flowers (or Cupcakes) to all your club leaders. Host a 4-H fun day with games and prizes for families. Have a day to wear a 4-H shirt to work or school. Host a fun run. Have a county-wide community service day and have the members all report back what they did, then prepare an impact story about how important 4-H service is. Plant a tree in honor of 4-H. Have your 4-H flag displayed with the American flag at sporting events during the week. Carry groceries for customers at a store. Create a county 4-H alumni club and solicit names through the paper and newsletter. Hold a dinner where everything made must come from a 4-H Food Project Manual. Carve pumpkins with a 4-H logo and take them to area homes, businesses. Post 4-H alumni signs, National 4-H week signs, or join 4-H signs in the yards of current or past 4-H members. Workshop Ideas Needed The Project Learning Dimension of the new (4-H records) Individual Experience Application requires more learning experiences with your club that relates to project areas. So, if your club would like to plan a workshop (also leadership opportunity) or would like to suggest a topic for a workshop, please call the office to discuss it or schedule the event. 4
5 Scholarship Available Illinois State University, Millikin University, and Pontiac Township High School are presenting the 4th Annual Celebrating High School Innovators competition (CHSI). The competition identifies, fosters and celebrates Illinois high school students whose contributions are exceptional and inspirational. We know that Illinois 4-H prepares you to solve problems and produces leaders, innovators, entrepreneurs, stewards, and builders. We want to celebrate you and reward you for your brilliance in one or more of the following areas: arts, media & literature business entrepreneurship social entrepreneurship health & nutrition science, technology, engineering & math (STEM). Shooting Sports Volunteer Training on Target for Oct Adults interested in teaching the shooting sports to young people should attend the fall adult volunteer certification training for the Illinois 4-H Shooting Sports program Oct at 4-H Memorial Camp in Monticello. Volunteers must be at least 21 years of age. Cost is $95. Volunteers must register through their local U of I Extension office. Volunteers must be present for all hours of the training to receive their certification. There are six concentrations of study, and volunteers must choose only one discipline to attend per session. These include archery, rifle, shotgun, pistol, and hunting and wildlife, as well as the overall county coordinator training. Remember, volunteers will work with their local Extension 4-H staff to establish or add to an existing shooting sports program in the county.
