2 The Australian Stock Horse Society The Australian Stock Horse This breed is possibly the world s most versatile horse and is often referred to as The Breed for Every Need. The Australian Stock Horse is a fine working and performance animal, renowned for its toughness, endurance, resilience and strength. It also has cat-like speed and agility, giving the horse a cosmopolitan blend of attributes which have produced the world s best at work and at play. The basic prerequisites of high performance sporting horses are a quiet temperament, intelligence and athletic ability. The Australian Stock Horse has all of these qualities, and is now regarded as the benchmark for equestrian breeding excellence. A proud history that has made it the breed for today and tomorrow Early History - The breed began with the arrival of the First Fleet to Australia in Originally these were of English Thoroughbred and Spanish stock, then later Arabs and Timor and Welsh Ponies were imported. Horses for the Colony needed strength and stamina to survive the long sea journey and to work in the untamed environment of their new home. Explorers, stockmen, settlers, bushrangers and troopers all relied on horses that could travel long distances, day after day. Weak horses were culled; the stronger types were used to breed sturdy saddle horses that were essential for the Colony s settlement. Exploits of the explorers and stockmen and their reliable horses in the Australian bush became Australian folklore, and stories such as The Man from Snowy River and Clancy of the Overflow depict the character of these pioneers and their horses. Despite the mixed origins, these horses developed into a strong and handsome type, which was eventually called the Waler after the Colony of New South Wales. Military Contribution - The hardiness of the Walers made them a natural and often preferred mount for the cavalry. Almost 400,000 horses were exported beginning in the 1850s to serve overseas troops. Initially they were used by British troops during the Indian Mutiny; then in South Africa they served in the Boer War and finally they were supplied during World War I. Modern Role - At the Opening Ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Olympics the Australian Stock Horse took centre stage and billions of TV viewers learned the remarkable history of this living icon. The Sydney Olympics fuelled a dream to develop the export potential for the Australian Stock Horse so that horse lovers in other countries can enjoy The Breed for Every Need. About the Australian Stock Horse Society The Australian Stock Horse Society was established in Scone, New South Wales, the Horse Capital of Australia. Today the Society is the largest of more than 70 individual horse breed associations in Australia. We enjoy a loyal and growing Membership of more than 9,500 individuals and have in excess of 180,000 registered horses. The Society aims to preserve and promote the heritage and bloodlines of the Australian Stock Horse, recognised for its versatility and superior performance amongst work and leisure breeds. Australian Stock Horse Society National Show Each year this proves to be a major event, as entries from past National Shows reveal it to be one of the largest single breed shows staged in the Southern Hemisphere. The National Show is a prestigious event, attracting over 500 select competitors, travelling from all over the country. This event also provides an opportunity for spectators and visitors to witness a demonstration of the versatility, temperament and athletic ability of our own breed of Australian horses. The Australian Stock Horse Society works with Tamworth Regional Council and AELEC to showcase this area of Australia to interstate competitors and visitors. Australian Stock Horses enjoy a high profile throughout Australia and overseas through exposure at some fantastic events such as Polocrosse World Cups, Opening Ceremony and demonstrations at the Sydney Olympic Games. Every weekend they can be seen preforming at the top level at Royal Shows, Polo tournaments, Campdrafts, Shows, Showjumping and Dressage. Australian Stock Horses are keenly sought at the Landmark Sales, and international branches of the Australian Stock Horse Society continue to be formed throughout Canada, United States and New Zealand. The Australian Stock Horse Society has over 9,000 members and more than 180,000 registered horses - our Members receive regular communication of events and sponsors through our Australian Stock Horse Journal, website and Facebook page. Australian Stock Horse Society media and PR activities reach an even broader demographic of horse lovers. The 2015 National Show prize pool was $143,315 and consisted of prizemoney, trophy saddles and other products. This level of prize ensures high numbers of participants gathering to compete and demonstrate the versatility of the Australian Stock Horse. This creates a strong regional presence, as well as helping promote future exports.
