3 2018 Meade County Bred Class to be offered at Fair Youth raising or purchasing locally grown animals need to be aware of the following opportunity. Animals will need to be recognized at spring weigh-ins as Meade County Bred, or they will not eligible at the county fair. Listed below is how the Class will read in the fairbook. Meade County Bred: A Meade County Bred class is being offered in both breeding and market divisions in the following species: Beef, Sheep, Swine, and Goats. Animals shown in this class MUST be born and bred in Meade County and specified of this at the respective spring weigh in*. Animals raised by a 4-Her/Family or purchased from a Meade County Producer are eligible for the competition. All animals in the specie division class will be shown together at the beginning of the breeding or market show. *Breeding Heifers will need to note this on the Beef - Breeding ID sheet. Beef Weigh In-March 23 from 4-6PM Market steers/heifers are required to attend Beef Weigh-In on March 23 eligible to show at the Meade County Fair. Weigh in is a MANDATORY event for any market steer or market heifer to be shown at the county fair. Meade County Tags will be provided at no cost to 4-H Youth. (Youth will need an EID tag if they plan to show at the KSF/KJLS.) If you cannot make the 23rd, please contact the office and soon as possible to schedule another date. Animals can only be weighed prior to weigh-in, but NOT AFTER. Only cattle weighed on the 23rd are eligible for the Rate of Gain award at the fair, donated by Meade Co-op. Please let us know if you calf was born in Meade County so we can get you entered in the Meade County Bred Class at the county fair! Breeding Heifers - NEW for 2018, breeding Heifers DO NOT need to come to weigh in. Breeding Heifers will need to turn in a Beef Breeding ID Sheet ( h/documents/county_fair_files/breeding%20id%20sheet_beef.pdf) by June 15th. Commercial Breeding Heifers for KSF/KJLS will need an EID tag. Registered Heifers will have to follow additional rules set forth by those show committees. KSF/KJLS Electronic Tags - If you wanting to nominate animals for Kansas State Fair or the Kansas Junior Livestock Show, you will need an EID Tag. These tags will cost a 4-Her $5 per tag to be tagged. Please bring the exact amount if you want to pay. The Extension Office can also bill you for these tags if you choose. Please contact Elly office if you have any questions regarding weigh-ins. Small Animal Weigh-In May 7 from 4 to 6:30 PM 4-H families planning to exhibit Bucket Calves, Goats, Sheep and Swine at the Meade County Fair will need to mark May 7th on their calendars for Small Animal Weigh-In. This event is mandatory for ANY small animal! Small animals are: Bucket Calves, Meat Goats, Breeding Does, Market Lambs, Breeding Ewes Market Swine, and Breeding Gilts.

4 Dairy Project Information Youth planning to exhibit any Dairy animal at the Meade County Fair will need to turn in a Dairy ID sheet for EACH animal to the Extension Office no later than June 15th. These ID papers are very similar to the horse ID papers. The Dairy ID sheet can be found on our county website under the Fair page ( h/documents/county_fair_files/dairy%20id%20sheet_dairy18.pdf). Classes at the fair include Heifer Calves, Second Year Dairy Heifer Bucket Calf, Yearling Heifer and Dairy Cow. For the 2018 Meade County Fair, a milking DAIRY cow, which is in production, will not need to be stalled during the duration of the fair. Wet cows are eligible to come in for the Dairy Show only and return home so 4-H youth do not have to milk cows at the fair. Again, this is only for cows currently in production of milk. Please ask questions to Elly if you further explanation so we can keep this exception to the rule of all animals must be stalled at the fair! Horse Practice starting in March Horse meetings will start in March on Sunday afternoons. We will meet at the Indoor Arena at the Fairgrounds in Meade on March 4th and March 18th from 2:30 4:00 PM riders will be working on events for the upcoming Spring Fling Horse Show. If Sunday afternoons are successful, we will hopefully continue to meet. We hope to have a guest speaker/helper at each meeting to give you a different and new perspective! Please do not forget that Horse ID Papers are due to the Extension Office by May 1. Please remember to ID every horse you have it s a good insurance policy if your good horse gets hurt! Horse ID Papers can be downloaded from Spring Fling Horse Show Meade County 4-H Horse will be hosting a Spring Fling Horse Show on April 7th at the fairgrounds. Classes are $5 each.
