4 Club Reports Hooked on Horticulture 4-H Club, Reagan Gage, Reporter Hooked on Horticulture is a relatively new club taught by Kerrie Roach and some Master Gardeners. Thanks to Bullington Gardens, who allows us to meet at their greenhouse, we have been able to do lots of fun plant experiments together each month. We have made our own chia pets, plant pots and potted bulbs and we are hoping to make a worm compost bin soon. We ve experimented to find out where bean plants grow best and learned how to tell the difference between a monocot and a dicot. We are looking forward to becoming certified Junior Master Gardeners soon! Sugarloaf Mountain Lions 4-H Club, Parris, Reporter We started our presentations. We chose topics. We all did a very good job. We chose what we want to do.we printed pictures a lot. It was a very fun activity. Thank you. Hoofbeats 4-H Club, Danielle Kuykendall, Reporter The 4-H Hoofbeats held their January meeting on the 5th. After our meeting Ms. Wendy did a program on horse first-aid. At their February meeting the Hoofbeats discussed the upcoming Horse Bowl and Achievement Night in addition to other contests and events coming up in March. After the meeting Ms. Wendy led us through a hands on program about body condition in relation to fitness for horses. The 4-H Hoofbeats held an extra meeting on Saturday the 27th. We met at Ms. Wendy s barn and each 4-H member got a horse to work with as we practiced showmanship. Everyone had a great time and enjoyed the chance to hang out with the horses! The Hoofbeats had their March meeting on the 1st. At this meeting we discussed upcoming presentations, the 4-H show, our Hope for Horses trip, and a date for the fall fun show. After the meeting we applied our newly learned horse first aid knowledge to a game. In the game you had to diagnose the horses problems based on the symptoms exhibited. Overall it was a fun night and we look forward to the next meeting. 4-H Fashion Revue & 4-H Entertains May 13-7:00 pm Grace Lutheran Church 4-H Fashion Revue Make a garment or accessory and be in the 4-H Fashion Revue on May 13, 2016! 6 West District 4-H Volunteer Award Winner Marcia Torres, 4-H alumna from West Virginia, earned the West District 4-H Volunteer Award at the NC 4-H Volunteer Leaders Conference in Raleigh February 6. Marcia understands the value of 4-H in developing life skills in youth and wholeheartedly supports it as a volunteer at the county, district and state levels. Her calm manner and wide variety of skills have served her well as a 4-H leader and mentor in Henderson County for nine years. Her club members excel in public speaking, in large part due to her coaching. Her 4-H Club, Leaders in Training, is very serious about serving the community, and participate in many service projects. 4-H is the Youth Development Program of NC Cooperative Extension, which is a division of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at NCSU. Visit //henderson.ces.ncsu.edu/4-h, call or Denise_Sherrill@ncsu.edu to learn more about 4-H activities or endowments. Pictured below with Marcia on the left is Dr. Richard Bonanno, Director of NC Cooperative Extension and Associate Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at NC State. On the right is Dr. Mitzi Stumpf-Downing, Assistant Program Leader, 4-H Youth Development and Family & Consumer Sciences. 4-H Presentations 4-H alumni say that learning public speaking skills in 4-H has benefitted them throughout their lives. Henderson County 4-H provides training and coaching for youth, ages 5 18, to create and give their own presentations. Cloverbuds, youth ages 5 8, do not compete in 4-H, but each one receives a small trophy for participation in 4-H presentations. At the county level, judges will decide if participants ages 9 18 will earn a blue or red ribbon. A blue ribbon means the participant has done a great job and is ready for district competition. The 4-H Advisory Committee has decided that blue ribbon winners will earn $40. A red ribbon means that the participant needs some more work before going on to the district competition. Red ribbon winners are asked to meet with county staff and/ or presentation coaches to practice and get approval to go on to the district competition. Gold medal winners at the district competition earn $60 from Henderson County 4-H. Depending on their category, they may earn a scholarship provided by donors to NC 4-H to participate in the state competition. Gold medal winners at the state level may also earn an award provided by donors to NC 4-H.
