1 Glacier County 4-H News November 2017 Greetings, 4-H friends! If I don t turn the calendar to November, is it still October? This week has been a whirlwind of 4-H enrollment, preparing for shooting sports and the Bazaar, and Marias Fair committee meetings; we are off and running! I am so excited for the great things happening in 4-H in Glacier County, we currently have 6 new Cloverbuds and 12 new 4-H members and I am continually seeing the great work you all do! Here s a few highlights so far this year: The Clever Clovers 4-H Club had a great window display for 4-H week (congratulations, and watch for some cash from the 4-H Council!) Mat Tuma reported he had a great time at the NILE show in Billings with his Merit Heifer, Charlie, and enjoyed meeting the other heifer recipients as well. JR Seewald and Coalter Littrell had a goal of selling 200 raffle tickets for a pork bundle to benefit Clark Diemert (Liberty County 4-H alumni), and earlier this week they had already sold over 300 tickets! We have a fantastic facility for shooting sports lined up, with eager and enthusiastic coaches. A big thanks to Mat Tuma, Don and Carolyn Popelka, and Kaleb Lewis for their help cleaning, organizing, and hauling equipment to the facility. Don has put countless hours in building new target backers as well, we are so thankful for all he does for shooting sports in Glacier county!! In early October, Mrs. Jaime Peterson invited me to speak to the Cut Bank 6th graders about 4-H, as she has noticed such a difference in her students who have a 4-H background. She commented on their responsibility, work ethic, confidence, and communication skills. It s so encouraging to know we have 4-H supporters out there who continue to see the value in 4-H, and that our 4-H members stand out. Our 4-Hers DO continue to stand out, did you notice that three of the October Student of the Month recipients for Cut Bank High School were 4-Hers?? Congratulations JR Seewald, Coalter Littrell, and Grace Rooney! Myla Cundall will be on her way to the National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, Georgia this month for winning the state Fashion Revue contest, have fun, Myla! We completed administrative assistant interviews this week, and we should have a new, friendly face in the office by mid-november, yay! The Pondera agricultural agent, Adriane Good, just started yesterday, so it s great to get some positions in our Marias Fair region filled again. In December I m planning a Project Day, and need parents and leaders to help lead workshops, oversee record book sessions, etc. If you have an idea for a workshop or are willing to help, please let me know. Please don t hesitate to let me know if you have questions about anything, I m here to help as best as I can! Club Meetings Clever Clovers - November 6, 6:30 p.m., Glacier County Annex Curry Comb - November 7, 6:30 p.m., Glacier County Annex Longview - November 14, 6:30 p.m., Glacier County Annex Parents, please make sure to attend meetings with your child. This is one of the best ways to remain informed, support your child, and become involved in your 4-H family! Please ask your club leader how you can help contribute to your club. People Partner Grants Last night at the Livestock Committee meeting, Zach Kinyon from the Blazing Saddles proposed his club painting the plywood wall (covering up the insulation) in the old sheep barn at the Marias Fairgrounds. His club is planning to apply for a People Partner grant through the Montana 4-H Foundation to purchase the paint. This is the same program that Curry Comb earned funds through to fix up the old sheep and goat barn as well. The Montana 4-H Foundation People Partner grants provide incentives and financial support to groups and individuals for programs that enhance the quality of living for people in their communities. Other projected funded have included purchasing school supplies, blankets for homeless students, a cemetery flower bed, a food pantry at a local school, mileage sigs, pillowcases for charity, etc. Details are available at montana4h.org/programs/grants/grants.html. Applications submitted by January 10 will be reviewed with suggestions, February 1 is the final submission deadline. Financial Reports Due Year end financial reports from each club are due to the Extension Office by December 1st! This includes the year end financial summary report and the 1% assessment fee, make checks out to Glacier County 4-H Council. Bread Baking Fun Day Baking members (and any other 4-Hers who are interested) are invited to a bread baking fun day on Friday afternoon, November 17, from 2:30-6 p.m. at Kari Lewis s house (714 E. Main, Cut Bank). We will be making homemade rolls for the Community Thanksgiving Dinner. Please let Kari know if you plan to attend. Steer Weigh-In - Dec. 1 and 2, 2017 Friday, December 1 - Wade and Leslie Berkram s - 3 to 4:30 p.m. (1346 Reagan Rd) Saturday, December - Rod Hibbs - 9 to 11 a.m. (93 Pendergrass Rd) If for some reason these dates do not work for you, you need to make arrangements with Kari Lewis to get your steers weighed prior to December 2. If you have an emergency that day, please let Kari know at Important reminders from the rules in the fair book: Each exhibitor may weigh in one spare animal/species. If doing a pen of three, four market animals may be weighed in. Any breeding animals must have the 4-H Clover tattoo OR Association registration tattoo by the official hog weigh-in deadline (which will be in April, 2018). So, if you are doing a breeding project, your animal does not need to be weighed in at steer weigh-in, but must have an appropriate tattoo by April. All steers must be dehorned prior to weigh-in, as horned steers are NOT allowed at fair. Also, make sure your steer has been fully castrated and is not a stag. All steers must have been born after January 1, Her must be 10 as of Oct. 1 to show a market beef animal. Information you need to bring to weigh-in Steer s birth date Breed of steer (including percentages of each breed) Breeder s name and address

There are sign up sheets online at : Food donations - Set-up, serving, etc. - for picking up the Butter Braids you sell or making arrangements for someone else to pick them up on Monday between 3:15-5 p.m. The profit from this fundraiser helps your club throughout the year cover membership dues, activities, meeting expenses, etc. All checks should be made out directly to your club or to the Glacier County 4-H Council for any At-Large members. Butter Braid Delivery - November 20 The Butter Braid forms should be turned into Holley at the Glacier County Health Department by 5 p.m. Friday, November 3. The only exception to that date is if you plan to sell them at the Holiday Bazaar you can turn in those orders by 12 p.m. Monday, November 6. Sunday afternoon, Nov. 5, following archery practice, we need a few parents with pickups to help move the rifle backers to the Southeast campus. Don Popelka has done an outstanding job building these, and we now need to transport them from Northwestern Energy over to the campus. Parents, please plan to help with this around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday (you can meet at the church and then head out together).

4 Holiday Bazaar 4-H Cheesecake Bakeoff Glacier County 4-H Council has been fortunate to receive the Cheesecake Table, as a fundraiser at the Cut Bank Holiday Bazaar, and we need your help! The Bazaar is Saturday, November 4, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Cut Bank High School and last year brought in 1,300+ shoppers. Currently we have eight cheesecake donations committed (thanks Tabi Furnare, Meg McCauley (2), Val Tuma, Raylee Johnson, Ali Smith, Hapi Seewald, and Kari Lewis), but are hoping for 20. Can you bake a cheesecake (no-bakes are ok!) or ask a friend, neighbor, aunt, grandma, etc. to? Cheesecakes should be dropped off at the Bazaar on Saturday from 9 to 9:30 a.m., or can be left at the Extension Office on Friday. The top three cheesecakes will receive rosettes and recognition! We still need some youth and adult volunteers for the Saturday shifts. More youth are needed for the later shifts to sell cheesecake to the vendors, which is a fun project! If you are able to help, please let Kari know at kari.lewis@montana.edu or or text These proceeds will directly benefit the 4-H Council which invests heavily in Glacier County 4-Hers. Annually, the 4-H Council purchases award for the Marias Fair, Demonstration Day, and the Roundtables, provides thank you gifts for workshop presenters and judges at events, purchases Project Day supplies, pays for the bus to 4-H camp, and provides scholarships to 4-Hers attending educational events (4-H camp, 4-H Congress, workshops, etc.) Thanks to Canon Bradley for all his work organizing this!
