1 Glacier County 4-H News April 2018 Greetings, Glacier County 4-Hers! We weighed our first group of pigs this week, so that must mean that spring is here (or better be soon!) Last weekend Sienna Cundall, Coley Cundall, and Grace Rooney attended the Montana 4-H Rec Lab in Thompson Falls. They had the opportunity to participate in some fantastic workshops, build skills to bring back to their 4-H clubs, and make some 4-H friends from across the state. Next year, our district (which includes Glacier, Toole, Liberty, Pondera, Hill, Blaine, and Phillips counties) will be hosting Rec Lab in Chester March 23 25, 2019, and I hope we have a large group from Glacier county! Congratulations as well to Jacob and Brad Hjartarson for taking on the challenge of competing at the state 4-H archery shoot this month as well in Bozeman. Thank you to Don and Carolyn Popelka for hosting the 3-D archery shoot again this year. It looked like a great, fun event to wrap up the year and we so appreciate all the time they put into preparing for this event. The rifle members wrapped up with a pizza party and set some goals for next year, so thanks as well to Art and Dennis for their time with the group. We still have lots of archery target bags and rifle backers to give away, please stop by and pick some up as we try to clean out our storage shed a bit! We had a good turnout for our swine workshop with Dr. Dave Madsen this past month and there was some great information shared. I was proud of how engaged our members were and the note taking that was going on! I ed out Dr. Madsen s slides so that they would be available as a reference, and I highly encourage 4-Hers to use Dr. Madsen as a swine resource and to utilize his website. He has created a website, which has 20+ feeder lessons available, which are essentially articles on everything from how to arrange a pig pen to prevent manure in the pig feeder, to nutrition, disease prevention, etc. If you Dr. Madsen at dmadsen@pigeducate.com Coalter Littrell tattooing he will provide you a login and password for free access to the website. Our Communications Contest is coming up April 8 and I encourage everyone to come watch and support our 4-Hers! Members who aren t signed up for this contest should plan to do a talk at a club meeting or the fair. For Pre-Junior members who are a bit anxious about a presentation, learning and presenting the 4-H pledge at a club meeting would be a great place to start! As we look towards fair, the Livestock Committee is planning a pre-sale social on Saturday, July 21 from 1 to 2 p.m. with appetizers served, including samples of lamb, pork, and goat. This will be a great event to invite potential buyers to so that they can interact with 4-Hers prior to the sale. Lamb, goat, and swine will be processed at Lower Valley Processing in Kalispell, beef will be processed at Christiaens Meats in Valier (buyers do have the option to make their own processing arrangements and coordinate their own transportation). On a personal note, I will likely continue to be in and out of Regan the office Walter in the with coming his months steer as my Dad is undergoing rotor cuff surgery on his shoulder next Friday after falling on some ice in the calving barn this month. We are still calving and it sounds like there s a long recovery involved, so please feel free to call or text if you need to get a hold of me.
