1 Toole County 4-H Newsletter January, 2017 Welcome New 4-H Club Members The Toole County 4-H Program would like welcome the following new members to our program: Sage Aklestad Kaiden Benson Trevon Benson Thomas Knickerbocker Jacob Maki Ella Samsal Addison Stevenson Alicia Stevenson Kacey Wipf 4-H is a wonderful and rewarding program for the whole family but it can seem to be overwhelming at times, especially when you re new. There are all those project manuals and record books to deal with and at times it really seems like 4-H speaks a whole different language that is unfamiliar to a new family in the program. So, as a new family, know that you will find wonderful support in your organizational leaders and fellow club members. When things seem difficult to understand or that form you just got in the mail just doesn t make sense, don t be afraid to ask for help. Please feel free to drop by the Extension office any time and ask the staff any questions you might have. 2 UPCOMING EVENTS Marais Fair 4-H Archery Tournament January 29 All 4-Her s in archery are encouraged to participate in the Marias Fair Archery Tournament. It is a good experience and a chance to meet shooters from surrounding counties. In addition to the archery contest, participants will also have their project interviews. All 4-H members must complete the interview to be considered for top awards. Archery interviews are completed with a judge at the tournament, rather than at the Marias Fair. Anyone who makes an exhibit for the fair needs to enter those in the July Marias Fair for judging. 4-H members who work the food booth at the fair will earn premium points for the interview and their target. Entry fee is $10.00 per discipline (primitive, bare bow, bow hunter, limited, unlimited, Olympic). Entry form must be postmarked by January 18th. After January 18th, there will be a $15.00 per child late fee. 3 Toole County Ambassadors We held our first meeting with our new Toole County Ambassadors, Lane Lerum, Ashton Daniels, Kiana Jorata, and Brittany Hanson on Wednesday December 21st. This is going to be such a fun group of kids who are willing to work hard to be leaders for our community. At our meeting, we played some Christmas themed icebreaker games; Starburst, Snow Removal, and Cookie Face. Then we got down to business about what we all wanted to get out of the Ambassador program. The ambassadors will be holding a workshop at the upcoming project day and we are still looking for ideas on how to do a project day at both Shelby and Sunburst schools. The Ambassadors had many ideas for creating excitement for fair with an Instagram page and a fair hype video. We are also going to be ordering t-shirts for the group. I am excited to see what fun and exciting new ideas our ambassadors will bring to 4-H this year! MONTANA 4-H REC LAB This event provides an opportunity for youth and adults to enhance their leadership, communication and team building skills in an action packed and interactive setting. Youth members 13 and older are encouraged to attend. Rec Lab programming in designed to provide participants with tips and tricks for being a better club, camp and community leader. Rec Lab will be hosted by District 8 and will be held in Miles City, MT. Rec Lab provides an opportunity to participate in a variety of workshops, there is no limit on the fun you will have. Rec Lab provides youth and opportunity to meet other youth from across the state, develop leadership skills, and learn fun recreational activities that can be used in club settings, county events and at other unexpected moments. Registration can be completed using 4-H online Open Gate Ranch Donation Heifer The Open Gate Ranch of Fairfield, Montana is awarding a heifer to a youth at the 2017 Golden Triangle Preview Show in Great Falls on April 22, Any youth between the ages of 8 and 18 are eligible to compete, whether belonging to a youth organization or not. 4 UPCOMING EVENTS WINTER TEEN 4-H CAMP! Loon Lake 4-H Camp, Bigfork, MT DATE: February 17 19, 2017 (Friday Sunday) TIME: Camp starts at 6:00 PM on Friday, ends at 9:00 AM of Sunday AGES: 4-H Age (age of youth on Oct. 1, 2015) REGISTRATION DEADLINE: Friday, January 27, Complete forms and return to Extension Office. COST: $75.00 for out of county youth and chaperones. Activities include fun workshops, private pool and gym party at the athletic club, karaoke, dance and more. Questions? Contact the Ravalli County Extension Office at Detailed information about the event will be sent to campers two weeks after registration closes. Registration forms are available online at Beef Beginnings Workshop There will be a Beef Beginnings workshop Tuesday, January 17, at 7 p.m. at the Glacier County Extension Office (1210 E. Main, Cut Bank). Members will learn how to use frame size to evaluate an optimum end weight for your steer, how much and what type of feed to feed throughout the feeding period, and how to manage your steer s feed so that he stays on feed and is gaining from now until fair. Don t wait until May or June to realize your steer will either be too light or underfinished, learn now how to feed a steer to meet s the judge s expectations! There will be additional information on halter breaking and showmanship as needed. The workshop is open to anyone and will be valuable no matter the member s age, but beginning members (first, second, or third year beef members) are especially encouraged to attend with a parent. Ben Rogers of Blazing Arrows 4-H Club Shot 300 in Unlimited Ben Rogers shot a 300 with 15 X s in unlimited Wednesday night at the Blazing Arrows 4-H archery range. It takes a huge amount of dedication and commitment to reach that accomplishment. He has been shooting 299 s last year and this year and we knew this year he would reach his goal. He will get his name added to the Blazing Arrows 300 Club plaque with Cameron Richmond and Sabrina Hanson. An archer shoots ten ends of three arrows each. The 10 ring is in the center with a smaller X ring inside the 10 ring. The only way he can improve his score from this is to shoot a higher amount of X s in the X ring. A perfect score is 300 with 30 X s. That is very hard to accomplish. Ben Rogers takes his archery shooting seriously with shooting year round. He travels to 4-H competitions around the state in the winter and shoots national and 3D competitions in the summer. He shoots three different classifications in bowhunter, unlimited, and Olympic recurve. I had to laugh when he enrolled in Blazing Arrows this year because he signed up for four classifications when there are only three time slots available to shoot. He likes to shoot as much as possible. He also shoots adult league with Marias Valley Archers. Through his ten year in 4-H he also shoots air rifle, air pistol, and shotgun and has received the Marias Fair top shooter award representing the four counties.

5 KMON 4-H and FFA Judging Contest January 20-21, 2017 Sharpen your pencils and your knowledge about livestock, meats ID and agronomy judging. The KMON 4-H/FFA contests are coming up. Registration is due by Jan. 13, 2017 to MSU Cascade County Extension, rd St. NE, #9, Great Falls, MT or at Registration fees are $6 per person/per contest. $10 late registration if postmarked after Jan. 8th. Lunch ticket sold on or before Jan. 13th, $6. after Jan. 13th, $8. All fees must be pre-paid. Livestock: contest may include classes of beef, sheep, wool, swine and goat, two classes of reasons, a keep/ cull class and some hands on practical problems involving livestock management. Meats ID: contest included identifying 30 retail cuts, wholesale cuts, retail judging, two classes of reasons, yield/quality grade problems and a written test. Agronomy: general knowledge test, plant, seed and product identification, soils, crop eval., marketing and harvesting, range, seed analysis, fertilizer, and insects. How to Feed Your Market Beef Workshop Hosted by Cascade County 4-H Livestock Leaders. Sunday, January 15th at Western Livestock Auction, 406 Vaughn South Frontage Rd, Great Falls, from 2 4 p.m. Rachel Endecott, MSU Beef Specialist, will present on how to successfully feed a market steer for a 4-H project. Rachel grew up on a family cow-calf operation near Ennis, MT, and remains an integral part of the operation today. She received her BS in Animal Science from MSU and her MS and PhD in Ruminant Nutrition for New Mexico State University. She has been the MSU Extension Beef Cattle Specialist since November Please contact the Cascade County Extension Office at with any questions. Drop/Add Deadline for Fair Projects is May 1st. If you are taking a project to Fair, you must have signed up for that project before May 1st. Project Book Activities: How many activities do you have done in you project book(s)? Completing 1 activity a month per project will have you ready to enter the Marias Fair. For those activities that require 7 activities and 3 learning experiences, you need to have at least 5 activities and 2 learning experiences completed in order to enter exhibits in the Marias Fair. Project Journals: Remember to update your journals, too. If you participated in school or other activities, write these down in your green My 4-H Year. As you work on your project, write down what you are learning, it provides a helpful guide to show the progress you are making with your projects.
