1 Toole County 4-H Newsletter March 2017 Toole County Project Day The Toole County 4-H Program celebrated President s Day by getting together for some hands on learning and a service project. The day started out with members practicing their roles as club officers with the Toole County Ambassador s demonstrating parliamentary procedure. Market Quality Assurances followed with members learning how to raise a healthy and safe market animal for fair. The Blazing Saddles club provided a workshop on drones for the lunchtime activity. This was the National 4-H Science Experiment this year. Other workshops included Kitchen Science and Marshmallow catapults. For a service project members tied fleece blankets that are being donated to the WIC program. Thank you to the Kountry Kids 4-H Club for providing the materials for the fleece blankets. Thanks also go to Leaders Lloyd Omdahl, Sara Brown, and Barb Larsen for helping to make the day a great success. 3 RAISE YOUR HAND ALUMNI ACTIVATION March 1 - July 30, 2017 As we work toward growing our Montana 4-H program, alumni are one of the most valuable resources we have. Who knows better than a Montana 4-H alum what 4-H can offer today s youth. The Raise Your Hand campaign is designed to reach all of those 4-H alumni scattered across the nation and reconnect them with the program that likely gave them many of the skills they use today. It is also a contest! Raising your hand is a vote towards a $20,000, $10,000 or $5,000 award for the states with the most alumni hands raised. Use these resources to get the word out and get Montana 4-H hands raised. WHAT TO DO: 1. Encourage 4-H Alumni al ALL ages to Raise Your Hand - Complete the form at to show your (their) pride as a 4-H alum. 2. Compete for your state Raising your hand is a vote towards a $20,000, $10,000 or $5,000 award for the states with the most alumni hands raised. 3. Pay if Forward - Tweet, post and share your #Montana4H #4HGrown experience or support and tag fellow alumni asking them. WHY ALUMNI? 4-H gives kids the opportunity to learn by doing, grow from failure and develop the skills they need to handle what life throws their way. No one know this better than you, our alumni, who have experienced our programs firsthand. We need your help to bring the same experience and skills to youth today. Show your 4-H pride and help bring the same opportunities to kids in your community and nationwide. Heifer Essay Contest The Open Gate Ranch of Fairfield, Montana is awarding a heifer to a youth at the 2017 Golden Triangle Preview Show in Great Falls on April 22, Any youth between the ages of 8 and 18 are eligible to compete, whether belonging to a youth organization or not. 6 Upcoming Events and Deadlines Butter Braid Fundraiser A HUGE Thank You for all who are selling! The Butter Braids will be delivered on April 12th at the Sheriff s Office. You can pick them up between 5:30 6:30 pm. The earlier the better. If you cannot pick up your Butter Braids, please make arrangements with someone in your club. Toole County Public Presentation Contest Sunday, March 26 th, 2 pm Divisions: Cloverbud, Pre-junior, Junior, and Senior Categories: Demonstrations, Speeches, Cowboy Poetry Awards: Cloverbud participation awards Pre-junior, junior and senior awards: $50 first place, $25 second place, and $10 third place in each division Trophy for Top overall presentation Registration form is included in this newsletter! The Clever Clovers 4-H Club of Glacier county is donating $100 to the Marias Fair Food Booth fund to purchase a new fryer, and they are challenging neighboring 4-H clubs to do the same. There are two fryers at the food booth, one of which was replaced a few years back, and now it s time to replace the other fryer that s gone down. The fryer will likely cost over $1,000; can your club pitch in to help purchase a new fryer? The proceeds from the Marais Fair Food Booth are used to award premium point money directly back to the 4-Hers, which all fair exhibitors benefit from. Will your club meet the Clever Clovers challenge? Livestock judging contest Input Needed The livestock committee is seeking your input on the Marias Fair livestock judging contest. Many years ago, the contest was held on Wednesday evening of the fair, then it transitioned to Friday afternoon of the fair. With the condensed fair schedule, there is currently lots going on Friday (horse show, goat show, beef breeding show, beef breeds steer show, poultry show), and it seems by the time Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. rolls around, kids are ready for a break in the day (versus livestock judging) and ready to get to the rodeo by 7 p.m. An alternative would be to have the contest at a date prior to the fair, which would also allow for there to be time for a workshop done in conjunction with the contest to provide education on how to livestock judge. Please discuss this at your next club meeting so the livestock committee can discuss at their March 29 meeting. There is a five question survey at that families, clubs, and 4-Hers can respond to, or you can also send your comments to Kari Lewis at kari.lewis@montana.edu or Thank you for your input as we seek to increase participation in the contest!
