2 Page 2 County Corner Monroe County Seven 4-H members participated in the 4-H Horse Show on June 2 at the Monroe County Fairgrounds. Great job to all who participated and continue to grow their skills and knowledge in horses! Five youth participated in the 4-H Food Demonstration Show held at the Monroe County Farm Bureau Women's Committee meeting on June 4. The Committee annually sponsors awards for youth who participate in the show and utilize a specified commodity in their food demonstration. This year, the commodity was corn. Participants included Rosemary Schultheis (Corn Salad), Janella Neary (Skillet Mexican Street Corn), Caleb Seboldt (Corn Oil Slaw Dressing), Valerie Branson (Corn Casserole) and Erin Halleran (Carrot Cake with Corn Oil). Chet Sutter explains his Shotgun display. Olivia Stechmesser meets with judge Bernadette Gregson, with her sewing project. Tyler Korves proudly displays his welding project.

3 Page 3 County Corner Monroe County Every 4-H member is responsible for working at least 2 hours. Club leaders will schedule you individually within the club s time-frame. This shift covers your 4-H programming fee for the H year. Please contact the Extension office at if: You cannot work in your club s allotted time-frame...we can schedule you with another group. You will be out of town during the entire week...we will work with you to help with an alternative activity to fulfill your responsibilities. You do not have a pass or are unable to pay the gate fee to enter the fairgrounds during your scheduled work time...there will be a limited number of passes to borrow from the Extension office. *Please call to confirm a pass at least 2 days in advance during office business hours from 8:00am-4:30pm. REMINDER: 4-H members must adhere to the following rules in order to maintain active status and exhibit at a 4-H Project Show and to sell an animal at the Livestock Auction: Attend at least four 4-H meetings prior to a 4-H project show. Present a talk or demonstration at a club meeting prior to a 4-H project show.

5 Page 5 County Corner Monroe County Selling ice cream at Waterloo s Military Hertitage Day! Caleb Seboldt was the guest speaker at the June New Design HCE meeting. Caleb presented How to Make Buttercream Icing in honor of Dairy Month. James Eschmann, Adam Doyle and Josh Middendorf all members of the Monroe County 4-H Livestock Judging Team participated in the State 4-H Livestock Competition on June 18. Mary Brinkmann and Lydia Lutman recently participated in the Illini Summer Academies. This four-day program promotes career opportunities for youth while highlighting U of I as a college choice for teens in Illinois. Mary took part in the Animal Nutrition subject area, while Lydia was involved with the Animal Science. Nine youth graduated from the Monroe County 4-H Cloverbud program on April 20. Graduates included: L-R: Lane Shevlin, Jessica Branson, Tessa Ervin, Julianna Mayer, Chandler Von Yeast, Arabella Mayer, Parker Brandt and Avery Ervin. Missing was Breanna Hanger.

6 Page 6 County Corner Monroe County Twenty-one youth participated in the Science Adventures Camp in June. Activities centered around the science of agriculture, robotics and energy! On the last day, the group took a field trip to visit Reinhardt Dairy Farm, the Kaskaskia Port District and Wm. Nobbe-John Deere. Members of the Monroe County 4-H Federation group volunteered their time cooking at Martha s Kitchen in Waterloo as a summer community service project. This active group of teens are always interested in helping others in our community!

7 Page 7 County Corner Monroe County Congratulations to Ron Mueller H Hall of Fame Nominees! The Illinois 4-H Foundation will honor outstanding volunteers at a gathering Tuesday, August 14 in the Orr Building of the Illinois State Fair in Springfield. This year, 4-H friend, alumnus and former leader, Ron Mueller will be inducted into the 4-H Hall of Fame at this ceremony. REMINDER! Due September 15: Treasurer Books and Secretary Books Treasurer Books MUST be signed by the treasurer and audited/signed by 3 additional people. These books must be turned into your leader for their review and signature. Understanding 4-H premiums In the past, the Illinois Department of Ag has provided funds to local Illinois 4-H members in the forms of premiums (cash prizes) for participation in 4-H shows and exhibitions. We currently have no guarantee that those funds will be provided. We treasure each of our 4-H families and know that you make a financial investment in your 4- H project work. We hope you continue to take pride in your 4-H learning and continue to participate fully in the 4-H program. As you are aware, we have no control on the actions of Illinois government. Celebrating volunteers at the fair If you re a volunteer leader, be sure to check in at the Information booth at the Orr Building Aug during the 4-H General Show to receive a free gift! Foundation Hall of Fame ceremony set The Illinois 4-H Foundation will honor one volunteer leader from each county at a ceremony during the Illinois State Fair. The celebration begins at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14 as part of Ag Day at the fair right before the Sale of Champions activities begin. Supporters and families of the recipients are welcome to attend.
