This online method allows members to print the pages that are pertinent to their project(s). Please be sure to read ALL of the important Show and Fair information. Families who are unable to access this online can contact their leaders or the Extension office to review a hard-copy of the book. IMPORTANT PLEASE READ! In order to exhibit your 4-H project, you must register online at Detailed instructions for on-line project registration can be found on our website at: ALL General Project Registration is due by June 16 to exhibit at Show-a-Rama. ALL Livestock, Crops & Horticulture Project Registration is due by June 27 to exhibit at the Monroe County Fair. Livestock entries are not required to be made online, but you are welcome to do so. The livestock entry form can be printed from our website here: If you enter livestock via paper form, it must be turned in on Livestock Entry night at the fairgrounds on June 27. Remember...this is for your 4-H project ONLY. OPEN AND JUNIOR entries for the fair must still be made on the paper copy found in the Fair Book. Extension to ACES Scholarship Recipients Lexi Ruemker and Joey Birritier are recipients of the Extension to ACES Scholarship. This scholarship is available to incoming freshman or transfer students to the University of Illinois College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences. Lexi is a member of the Monroe County 4-H Federation and Teens as Teachers. Joey is a former member of the 4-H Shotgun Club and Golden Eagles 4-H Club. They will both begin their majors in Agricultural Education this fall at U of I. Date: June (includes a field trip) Time: 9am-3pm Who: Incoming 5th-7th Grade Students Cost: $25: 4-H members; $30: non-4-h members (Snacks provided; bring your own lunch) Register: Call for questions. *Space is limited to 25 participants*

YOU will expand your own knowledge by working with experts on topics you find interesting. YOU will get practical training that you can use in college, in your career, and throughout life. Educational partners for Teen Teacher program: As a freshman, I never thought that I would want to be a teacher. It wasn t until joining Teens as Teachers that I realized that I wanted to teach students about the Agriculture industry. Teens as Teachers helped me make my decision to attend the University of Illinois to major in Agriculture Science Education to teach high school students. ~Jacob J., Teen Teacher University of Illinois Extension, 4-H program Monroe County Agriculture in the Classroom Monroe County Farm Bureau Engage Lead Inspire Impact What to Expect Attend two 4-hour trainings on expectations, strategies to teach, learn about positive youth development and curriculum to teach. Teach 6 sessions to youth. Other volunteer opportunities. May 24 at 6:30PM University of Illinois Extension Office 901 Illinois Ave, Waterloo IMPORTANT NOTE: The informational meeting will be after our Teen Teacher Recognition event. Please join us for pizza and ice cream as we recognize our Teen Teachers! Ask current Teen Teachers questions, and hear about their successes, challenges, and overall thoughts of the program. Rachel Hazen, 4-H Educator: hazen2@illinois.edu OR The 6th, 7th and 8th Grade Waterloo Jr. High 4-H Science Clubs held their final meeting on April 11 with an outdoor Field Day. Youth participated in activities such as a paper airplane challenge, boat engineering, bubble making, wind energy, and making home-made shebert. The after school program is co-sponsored by University of Illinois Extension, Monroe County Ag in the Classroom, Farm Bureau and WJHS.
4 Page 4 County Corner Monroe County Baebler Educational Farm Saturday, June 16, JJ Road, Waterloo Anytime between 10am-1pm Take some time to enjoy the beautiful and serene surroundings of Baebler Educational Farm! All families welcome! Fish in the stocked lake (Catch and release only; fishing license not required for this event; bring your own bait) Fly kites or toy drones Bring a picnic lunch to enjoy in the pavilion or on a blanket on the grass. Explore native plants and insects in the pollinator garden. 4-H members continue to use BAEBLER EDUCATIONAL FARM to enhance their 4-H experiences: The Golden Eagles 4-H Club cleaned up branches, trash and honeysuckle in April and are currently working on a nature hunt brochure for visitors. The 4-H Jr. Naturalist Club resumed their meetings in March and participated in an owl pellet dissection activity. In April, the group planted a zinnia patch and went on a hike to find wildflowers in the woods. The group found ferns, bluebells, violets, peppercress and a serviceberry. The 4-H Air Rifle Club resumed their meetings in April as well and meet monthly at the pavilion. Their initial meetings overviewed safety and proper use of an air rifle. The NEW 4-H Pistol Club started meeting at the farm in February and meets monthly at the range near the creek. The 4-H Archery Club has been meeting throughout the 4-H year, practicing their skills on a monthly basis as they prepare for 3-D Competition Shoots. A new Rain Garden was recently constructed at the Farm! Feel free to check this and all of the other exciting educational resources out. Jr. Naturalist, Gwen Wiegand dissects owl pellets with Leader, Sarah Vogt. Volunteers are always needed to help maintain these sorts of projects. Call to find out more! 5 Page 5 County Corner Monroe County The Sunshine 4-H Club has been offering baked goodies and treats at the festival for nearly 20 years. Twenty-six youth participated in the annual Sheep and Goat Judging Contest facilitated by Dick Cobb, retired U of I Extension Sheep Specialist. Leigha and Lillian Henerfauth were two of many youth who participated in the Kids Corner with 4-H Federation. 4-H members gathered together on March 26 for a Horse Workshop at the Extension office. Participants learned from volunteers about horse record keeping as well as showmanship tips from volunteers Kay Courtney and Carol Kaiping. The Hoofbeats Competition Team also gave an exciting and engergetic presentation on the events and activities that they have been participating in this year, in addition to an interactive lesson on the horse digestive system. Seventh grade students from Columbia, Waterloo and Valmeyer schools attended a field trip to Monsanto on April 30. The trip was a finale to the Agriscience Roadshow. The objective of the field trip was to increase understanding of the science of food and agriculture and to promote interest in careers related to food science and agriculture. In addition to the tour, the students participated in a Farm Simulation Game and also had lunch with several Monsanto employees who reside in Monroe County. To Make the Best Better
6 Page 6 County Corner Monroe County This year, the Cloverbud group had FIVE sets of twin members! Eight youth graduated from the Monroe County Cloverbud program on April 20. L-R: Jessica Branson, Tessa Ervin, Julianna Mayer, Chandler Von Yeast, Arabella Mayer, Parker Brandt and Avery Ervin. Missing was Breanna Hanger. Riley Middendorf of the Clover Friends 4-H Club won Reserve in Show with her Holland lop. Local youth and youth from surrounding counties attended a Rabbit Fun Show and Workshop at the Monroe County Fairgrounds on April 29 sponsored by the Monroe County Rabbit Breeders Association and Extension. Youth had an enjoyable time participating in the fun show to further their knowledge on what judges look for in quality rabbits. Demonstrations were also presented on picking out show rabbits and tattooing.
7 Page 7 County Corner Monroe County HORSE BOWL, HIPPOLOGY AND SPEECH CONTESTS On April 14, members of the Hoofbeats Competition Team participated in the Regional 4-H Horse Bowl, Hippology and Speech Contests, with several members advancing onto the State Contests. At the State Contests on April 21, Shianna Carter Ratliff placed 9th in the Junior Hippology Contest. In addition, the following members placed well in the Speech Contest: Annika Olson (Horses of War): 6th in Junior Individual Shianna Carter (Equestrianism): 8th in Junior Individual Erin Kelley (Lipizzan Horses): 5th in Senior Individual Congratulations to the entire club on all of their hard work! The group of 17 members, is coached by Krista Olson in addition to Gene Kraemer, Stephanie Mohr and Lynn Mitchell. They meet 2-4 times per month studying a variety of topics such as the horse digestive system, equine diseases, horse reproduction and more. Monroe County 4-H Horse Show Sunday, May 20 1:00pm (Date subject to change due to weather) Monroe County Fairgrounds Open to all 4-H members enrolled in a 4-H Horse Project. Exhibit requirements can be found in the 4-H Showbook on page 4: STATE FAIR JR. HORSE SHOW: July DUE MAY 15th TO THE EXTENSION OFFICE: Horse Ownership and/or lease papers need to be turned in in order to exhibit at the Illinois Sate Fair Junior Horse show. In addition to the papers, two photos, one of each side of the animal are mandatory. Download the Horse Entry Forms must also be turned in for Extension Staff to sign. Forms can be found at: Entry forms can be mailed on your own or included with ownership/lease papers. Call the Extension office with any questions at NOTE: Members are encouraged that if they own or lease more than one horse, to file paperwork on ALL potential exhibit horses by the June 1 deadline. If a horse is injured or dies, it may be replaced ONLY by a horse whose paperwork is already on file by the June 1 deadline. A horse may only be owned or leased to, and exhibited by ONE 4-H or FFA member at the State Fair Junior Horse Show.

Monroe County Farmers Market-Columbia Thursdays, 3-6 PM at the Columbia Centre Monroe County Farmers Market-Waterloo Saturdays, 7:30 AM to noon at Family Video parking lot The 21st annual 5th Grade Conservation Day event was held on April 25. Over 300 youth participated in educational stations including Geology, Birds, Floods, Forestry, Honeybees, Recycling, Soils, Water Quality, Wildlife and Wind Power. Stations were taught by both adult and youth volunteers. Eight of the youth volunteers were high school 4-H members, who all fondly recalled their experiences at Conservation Day when they were 5th grade students Youth Cooking School Youth Cooking School is a four ½ day camp that teaches kids basic cooking skills, kitchen safety, dining etiquette and more! Each day will focus on a different lesson and menu. Participants will dine on their own culinary creations! 9 Page 9 State/Regional Events Monroe County Advocate for Livestock as 4-H Ambassador Join a team of 22 young adults who are passionate about Illinois agriculture and livestock. Applications are being accepted for the state 4-H Livestock Ambassador Team. You must be 16 to 21 years of age (as of 9/1/18). Applications are due June 1 and can be downloaded at Help Illinois win $20,000 April 1 May 15, you can help Illinois win $20,000 just by raising your hand! We need every 4-H alum AND (NEW IN 2018) ANY ILLINOIS FRIEND OF 4-H to register online with National 4-H Council. Vote at Foundation Hall of Fame ceremony set The Illinois 4-H Foundation will honor one volunteer leader from each county at a ceremony during the Illinois State Fair. The celebration begins at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14 as part of Ag Day at the fair right before the Sale of Champions activities begin. Supporters and families of the recipients are welcome to attend. Win $1,000! The Superior Young Producer Scholarship Program is offered by the Illinois State Fair to 4-H members in Beef, Sheep, Swine, Dairy, and Horses as an educational activity at the Illinois State Fair to promote youth development and personal growth. Check out more details at livestock.pdf, page 35. Many NEW Academies are Scheduled Registration is open for the BEST SUMMER CONFERENCE EVER! Illini Summer Academies lets you try out college life while you study with college professors and learn about possible careers! The conference is Sunday, June 24 through Thursday, June 28 and is open to ALL YOUTH who have completed 8 th grade and are at least 14 by Sept. 1, Check it out at go.illinois.edu/illini4h. If you are paying your entire registration fee, register now at go.illinois.edu/illini4h. If you are requesting a Trailblazer scholarship from the Illinois 4-H Foundation, apply at go.illinois.edu/ illini4hscholarship. Check the website to see if you qualify.
10 Page 10 Regional/State Events Monroe County Test your skills at state livestock judging contest The Illinois 4-H Livestock Judging Contest will be held Monday, June 18 at the Stock Pavilion in Urbana (1402 West Pennsylvania Ave.) beginning with registration at 8:30 a.m. All participants must be checked in by 9:30. The contest will begin at 10. Each county may enter a total of three teams, with no more than two junior teams or two senior teams. Get all the rules and details online: go.illinois.edu/4hlivestock. Don t be chicken; compete at state 4-H poultry judging contest The Illinois 4-H State Poultry Judging Contest will be June 26. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. at the U of I Stock Pavilion in Champaign. Learn more at events/illinois-4-h-poultry-judging-contest. Celebrating volunteers at the fair If you re a volunteer leader, be sure to check in at the Information booth to receive your special gift. The Illinois 4-H Foundation will honor the 2018 Hall of Fame winners at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug 14 in the Orr Building prior to the Sale of Champions festivities. We will no longer hold the Clover Celebration or Fashion Revue during the state fair. A new state Public Presentation Contest will be held Saturday, June 9 in Decatur and will not be held during the state fair. Check out the masters at this year s state fair Each county may send one entry into the Illinois State Fair Master Showmanship Contest. The contest begins at 7:30 PM Friday, Aug. 10. Exhibitors must be at least 14 and no older than 18 (as of 9/1/17). You need to supply your own animals for the contest, but may make arrangements to borrow animals from exhibitors at the fair. Top prize is $500. The contest is sponsored by Illinois Farm Bureau and RFD Radio. Are you a graduate of University of Illinois College of Agriculture, Consumer and Environmental Sciences?
