From left to right, Alex Osborne, Grace Kuhl, and Kate Richars all did an excellent job explaining what 4-H means to them and what the Jasper County 4-H program has to offer. Photo taken by Vanette King, Newton Press Mentor Afterschool Adventures Twenty 3rd-6th grade students got to join in the Rock-tastic fun on Tuesday, March 13. Maleah Cooper, a Clay County 4-H member, explained how she started her 4-H Geology project and showed her impressive collection to everyone. Beth, Maleah s mother, also helped explain how Maleah first became interested in rock-hunting. After the presentation, the participants made dissolving rocks, broke open their own geode, and chose 5 rocks to start their very own rock collection. When asked what their favorite part was, many said All of it! Everyone had a lot of fun! Many thanks to Beth and Maleah Cooper, and the 4-H Ambassadors who were able to help that day; Stetson Bierman, Erica Johnson, and Grace Kuhl. 4-H Federation March minutes On March 6, 2018, the Jasper County 4-H Federation held their meeting at the Sunrise Center. The summer Federation trip was discussed. The 4-H Federation will be going to Holiday World. The date will be chosen at the April meeting. The Stang Arts afterschool program in February went well. Federation and new member t-shirts were also discussed. Members voted on two different design choices. They chose the design with the larger emblem on the front. Lane Higgs moved to change the orange t-shirt to pink, and Haley seconded it. The motion was passed. Federation and first year member t-shirts will be paid for. All Jasper County 4-H members will receive an order form with the different color, shirt, and hoodie options. 18 Unit 21 4-H News An Inclusive Environment On the surface, members in your 4-H club may look pretty similar, but in reality, they all possess differences. They are different ages, come from different family backgrounds, have traveled/lived in different places, have different likes/ tastes. Each member brings a unique perspective which is influenced by his or her own unique individuality. When considering club activities, events and programs, it s important to think about the similarities and differences of the club s membership. To make sure your club is an inclusive environment, get to know your members. What are their favorite: places to go food hobbies music games to play etc. A fun way to learn about similarities and differences is to play the Have You Ever game. Have you ever: been ziplining lived in another state eaten alligator watched SpongeBob SquarePants said 'excuse me' when there was no one around scared myself in a mirror sang in the shower. been to a foreign country spoken a difference language been to Disney World Be creative, come up with kind of serious, funny, extreme have you ever questions. To play, have members stand in the middle of the room, if they have done what is called have them move to one side of the room. Ask clarifying questions, such as what states have you lived in, did you like alligator, what countries have you been to, what languages do you speak, what song do you sing in the shower, would you sing for us, etc. By acknowledging and celebrating similarities and differences, members feel accepted and appreciated. They: are more likely to participate and become more engaged in club, county and state activities, programs and events. are more likely to feel valued and supported. learn, know and communicate in a multiplicity of ways. An effective way to build an inclusive learning environment is forming meaningful connections 4-H members with comembers, 4-H members with adult volunteers. Simply saying their names correctly and greeting members builds relationships. Taking the time and effort to treat every member as an individual and truly believing that each can succeed, will have a positive and lasting affect on members success in life. That s what 4-H is all about To make the best better! In the next newsletter we will look at providing a safe emotional and physical environment. 18 U of I Extension Clay, Effingham, Fayette, and Jasper County

Your Envirobot will illuminate the many environmental challenges we face as we try to heal our planet. NEW this year (replacing the teamwork challenge): Each team will identify one environmental health issue and propose a potential solution or product to help mitigate the negative effect of the issue. Teams will have 15 minutes to present their solution to judges. BREAKING: See the time_continue=180&v=ivtx3oxmkni! Not into robotics? That s no problem. 25 Illinois 4-H Open your home to an exchange student, and open your lives to the world! Experience the richness of the world, without even leaving home! This summer, Illinois needs host families for 55 Japanese and 7 Korean exchange students. Students range from 12 to 17 years of age and are matched to a youth in your home by gender, age and common interests. These eager kids want to experience American culture, make friends and improve their English by staying with your family. Families must pass a background check, have a youth in the home with a similar age, gender and interest as the exchange student, and have an interest in other cultures. Students arrive July 25 and return August 20. You don t need to plan anything special during their stay; they just want to experience everyday American life. Host families are also needed for the adult chaperons! Host families for them are not required to have children within the household. For 4-H members interested in traveling abroad hosting is a great way to begin to get a feel for that experience. For more information, visit Or contact the Illinois 4-H International Coordinator Miriam Rosenbohm at rosenbohm07@comcast.net or Want a longer hosting opportunity? If you have hosted in the past and would like a longer hosting opportunity, there are year-long opportunities for international high school students interested in spending a year attending high school and experiencing life in America. These students normally arrive in August and return home the following June. If you are interested but have additional questions, please contact Miriam Rosenbohm.
