13 Effingham County 4-H DEADLINE TO ENTER PROJECTS IN THE 2018 Effingham County 4-H Fair is JUNE 15, (Rabbits JULY 1 due to the difficulty determining the sex for the younger rabbits) If you DID NOT enroll in a project you will not be able to enter it on your fair entry. You will need to contact Patti at the Extension office and she will go back into 4-Honline to enroll you in that project. The following link will take you to the 4-H Fair entry: If you have difficulty opening it, copy the link and paste in Google Chrome or Firefox. Use your login & password from the 4-HOnline. If you forgot your password on 4-HOnline, you will notice it reads: I have a profile or I need to set up a profile, or I forgot my password. You can watch a video another Unit made on how to use the Fair Entry. Here is the link: or refer to the attachments on how to enter your classes for 4-H Show Days. For those new to 4-H, when you first enrolled in 4-H on the 4Honline, you were enrolling in 4-H projects you wish to explore. By enrolling in a project you are able to purchase 4-H publications you need. Now we are ready for the second step. This is called Fair Entry. You are entering in the classes you wish to exhibit at the 4-H Show Days. If you are not sure what you are to exhibit at the 4-H Exhibition Show Days, please see the attached 2018 Effingham County 4-H Fair Book. Here is an example: You enrolled in Photography 1. Open the 2018 Effingham County 4-H Fair Book, turn to page 38. There you will find the exhibit requirements for Photography 1. In 4-H you are only allowed 2 exhibits per class. The Fair Entry program will not allow you to enter more than 2. Are you READY for FAIR? Where have the months gone? June is here and July is fast approaching. The main question on your mind may be: ARE YOU READY FOR FAIR? If you are unsure of your answer, see if you can check all of these off of your ready for fair list: Do you have your project book and have you looked it over? Do you have your Fair Handbook and know the requirements for your project? Do you have your project complete and ready for judging? Have you received, filled out, and returned to the office your fair entry forms? If you are in horses, did you turn in your ownership/lease papers at the beginning of May? If it's your first year in Livestock, have you completed the QAEC online? Swine Exhibitors: Is your Pork Quality Assurance Certification up to date? Have you checked that you are enrolled in every project you signed up for in May? Have you attended 1 club meeting? If you can check all of these off your list then you are in excellent shape and ready for fair. If you can't, you need to start working on it because fair will be here before you know it. If you feel like you are unsure about what you need to bring to fair or you need help on your project, please call the office at We will be glad to help you. 13

20 Unit 21 4-H News Independence: Seeing Oneself as an Active Participant in the Future Seeing oneself as an active participant in the future is the ability to have hope and optimism to shape life choices which facilitates the transition into participating in the future. What does this mean and how does it apply to 4-H? For youth to become contributing members of society they need to know that their actions and decisions have an impact on others and events. Youth need to realize they have the power to shape life choices and define their future. 4-H provides youth opportunities to foster skills that lead to positive healthy life style decisions. It gives youth a chance to try out new roles in a safe environment. Participation in 4-H through project work, leadership, communication, and teamwork skill development prepares youth for careers. A difficult task for youth, and adults, is to set attainable goals and define realistic strategies for reaching them. The more success youth have in setting and achieving goals, the more confidence they have in taking on more difficult and challenging tasks and the more likely they are to positively complete those tasks. 4-H provides information, direction, and guidance while allowing youth to make decisions and develop skills that will help them be successful contributing members of society. 4-H volunteers play a key role in helping members obtain a sense of seeing oneself as an active participant in the future. As adults we need to cultivate youths ability to think, feel, make decisions, and act on their own. In your club... Do members set goals and work toward those goals? Do members think about life plans and their future? Do members develop hobbies and leisure interests? Do youth take healthy risks? Are members allowed to make decisions for the club? Are members allowed to set club meeting agendas and run the club meetings? Are the ideas/suggestions from members taken into consideration and valued? Do members take on responsibilities within the club and are they allowed to carry out those responsibilities on their own with only guidance and direction from adults when needed? Some practices 4-H clubs can implement to help youth obtain that sense of seeing oneself as an active participant in the future are: Provide opportunities for youth to assess their work both successes and failures. Invite guest speakers to present short programs on their work/career. Incorporate discussion of careers into project learning activities, club programs, and field trips. Encourage youth to try new projects, activities, and leadership roles stretch their comfort zone. Encourage youth to set goals for their future. Provide opportunities for youth to develop ideas and see them through to completion. Encourage youth to think positively. In the next newsletter we will continue looking at independence as it relates to 4-H. 20 U of I Extension Clay, Effingham, Fayette, and Jasper County

21 Illinois 4-H See What it takes to be heard A new contest will showcase the speaking talents of the Illinois 4-H members. The contest will be Saturday, June 9 in Decatur at Richland Community College. Activities will begin around 9 a.m. In addition to the statewide contest, free webinars on different types of speaking will be presented in the auditorium, including everything from comedy impromptu to broadcast journalism. Come spend the day with Illinois 4-H. The contest is supported by Compeer Financial through the Illinois 4-H Foundation. We hope clubs will travel to the contest to cheer on their favorite competitors and learn more about speaking in public. Let s get real! 4-H REAL media is an exciting new learning experience for 4-H members ages H REAL media is online and has 4 interactive learning modules (approximately 20 minutes each) to teach how advertising tries to manipulate youth. Youth will create their own messages to fight back and help protect their friends and community. As you go through the levels, you will complete surveys and earn up to $50 each for participation. After completing the interactive modules, you will create an anti-substance abuse poster or 30-second video AND enter your poster or video into an online social media contest. There are cash prizes for the contest that give you the chance to win up to $250! Submission of your video or poster qualifies as a national mastery experience, and if selected as one of the top winners, it will be shared nationwide and therefore qualify as a national level service experience. Both experiences are recognized as part of the current Illinois 4-H State Experience Award Application. An invitation will be sent directly through 4-H online to all age-eligible members. Please be on the lookout! 21

24 Illinois 4-H Save the date for fall shooting sports contests Here are the dates of the fall Shooting Sports state contests. 4-H youth may participate in one, two, three, or all four contests.
